The good thing about using a ring gear tool is you can tighten the crank bolt when your done. Every duramax owner that does their own work should have one.

Worked perfect. Appreciate you publishing this video. I was apprehensive, but my similar set up did the trick and saved lots of grunting and straining as I viewed in other videos. I braced my breaker bar over on passenger side frame rail. Put a rug on top of the power steering pump and then rested the bb on rail. My '07 at 348k miles had what appears to have been its first water pump change. I did have to bump mine twice. i think since I didn't have it bound as you did to alternator mine bounced on first attempt. I filmed much of my endeavors in replacing the water pump , but did not this part. Again thanks.

Worked perfectly for me. Now, how to tighten it without the tool.

It was not pre loosened, it really is that easy.
Fpv slim, if you bungee it behind the alternator pulley, it cannot slip off.
I use this method on all cars I have to take the crank bolt off.
Care must be used to determine the direction the motor spins, so you know which way to block the breaker bar.
This should go without saying, but I would not recommend holding the breaker bar while someone cranks it but hey, some people ate paint chips as a kid.

There are several videos out there on tightening back up. The quick and dirty is There's a cover plate on bottom near fly wheel you can remove and put a Leslie tool in or you can jam a pry bar or chisel up to lock it. Also, some remove the starter and place a steel bar into flywheel from that opening. Just be sure not to over torque the HB 36mm bolt when putting it all back together. At 278 ftlbs I thought I needed to use my 30" breaker pipe on end of my 3/4" 20" ratchet. And being on the slim side I put some umph into it. Well I sheared my guide key pin that the harmonic balancer slides over and the rest of story took a bit to repair.

Rent a half inch torque wrench from autozone set it to 250lbs and put a cheat pipe on its handle and proceed to bend the torque wrench handle 😁🙃🙃🙃🙃

Do I need to insert the Leslie tool still to do the bump start method

    • @captainr.8882
      @captainr.8882 3 года назад

If you insert the Leslie tool and bump the key, the compression will probably strip the off the fly wheel.
Just stick with the Leslie tool and remove the balancer bolt the traditional way. There is no chance of trashing your radiator that way.

Some people shouldn't be working on cars. Hey here is an idea hook your starter up backwards to tighten it up.

Tried it and broke three breaker bars. Needed a one inch drive. Oh yeah 20 years of salt isn't in this video.

The bad part is is that balancer it’s not on there exactly right you can actually destroy the crankshaft damaging or destroying the whole motor

Good idea but I prefer the tool.. any ways you're going to need it for torque... I get one from orally for $45 dollar.. 3 pieces set ..

Good until breaker bar slips and puts hole in radiator.

What I don’t get is since the rads drained anyway why not remove the rad and use impact to put the bolt back in after lol

I just took the front clip off yanked the intercooler and rad out and put my Milwaukee impact on it and it broke loose in a second.

There's no way it was tight to start with, maybe tight but not to the spec. I've had to use a breaker bar and a 6 foot pipe and it bends like an arrow before it cracks loose. Good try but I don't believe it

Everyone says “leslie” tool, when in fact, the tool company name is lisle, pronounced lyle. The s is silent.
