- Time to FINALLY get some decorating done in the my "new" old historic rental home! We're working on some kitchen shelves and making an open linen cupboard out of a free bookshelf to display all my vintage afghans, quilts, and blankets. Then we'll be going on a field trip to a vintage car show at the Gilmore Car Museum in Kalamazoo, Michigan. We're going to see a groovy Volkswagen bus and eat lunch in a 1940s diner.

I remember back in my younger years when decorating my 1st home. I bought a toilet seat cover and small bathroom rug. It gave me a new lease on life!! Was so happy kept walking past bathroom and seeing how good it looked.

When I was four years old, in 1971, my parents planned a family trip to Germany where we were going to pick up our brand new VW bus, tour around, and then have it sent back to the states for us. I remember going to the VW showroom and sitting in one-and it had one of those raising-roof-beds! Shortly before our trip, my mom found out she was having my brother and the trip and car were both canceled. It’s 2023 and I’m still not over it.

That is a great idea to fold the blankets long ways. Yours are so pretty and colorful! I loved the shelf and the little suitcases on top.
My dad had an orange VW bus in the 70s just like that one! Before that he had an older model VW bus that we used to go camping in. I slept on top of the motor in the back as a child- sometimes even when we were driving. No seat belt laws back then. I still love the hum/whine of the motor when I hear a VW. ❤ When we got engaged in 1970, my hubby to be drove a bug. Then my oldest son's first car was a rebuilt red '62 bug.VWs are the coolest. 😊

I really appreciate and enjoy a slower more realistic approach to decorating and styling. If it helps, whenever I watch videos where they do it all in one go I actually feel kind of sad because when I go to watch videos I like coming back for more inspiration and ideas, and that only means I know it will be like several months - year before they maybe revisit decorating that space (because duh), so it’s much more fun for me to have little bits here and there and watching it grow 💛💛:)

I knew you could do it! Sweet Blossom is starting to learn to trust you, like Holly did with us. Even though there's water outside, you could put a water bowl next to her food. It may encourage her to trust you if you're taking care of her needs. I love the blankets as decor. I would call that practical decorating. Just like the shelves in the kitchen. Everything is usable, easy to get to and practical. The car show looked like fun. When I was a tiny girl, in the late 60's-very early 70s, we has a VW bus. I wonder if it's still around somewhere. Don't worry about putting together contrived videos. Just come as you are, and do what you do.😊
I find that she doesn’t drink the water if I put it next to the food! So I’m just doing whatever gets her to drink 😂 I hope your VW Bus is still around ☺️
Emily, what about a cedar chest? That would be awesome storage! Love your stacking hack in the kitchen, and i love your linen library. Looks like there's room for one more blanket. Have to tell you - your flower pot S & Ps were made by Shawnee Pottery from Zanesville, OH. Used to have a HUGE collection. Love seeing people on social media just be real - bare faced with messes on dressers - it's refreshing!

Last summer my mom, sister, and I did a mystery bus trip. Our second stop of the day was the Gilmore Car Museum. Now.. at first we were NOT thrilled but decided to keep an open mind. And honestly i LOVED it!! I could have spent so much more time there. Especially with the 20-40's areas. And we ate at the diner as well. The food was great!

Yes I definitely stress about it! It became my whole brand and job and a lot of people count on me to decorate each season and to watch what I do. So I find myself stressing about it now 😂
You can try the bonding sock trick with Blossom! Put a sock near the food bowl that you have worn and it can help her get used to you! I had a friend who is involved in pet rescue recommend that to me 😺

I decorate small areas too. It usually coincides with some sort of exploration I'm doing. For example an area for flowers I'm drying mixed with handmade and vintage decor. Smaller areas of my place are always changing. I look at it like a studio. It's always in flux. I also mix in vintage decor with the shelving of practical useful items. Then I see my practical items and use them plus they are beautiful. I like your ideas and your place is looking lovely.

Love the video!!! But I think you sell yourself short - what I love about your channel is YOU! I love your content. I don’t come here to see you all dolled up or giant HGTV type of reveals. We would never know (at least I wouldn’t) when you are wearing make up. I appreciate you show your house as a lived in real house, not a faked staged house to make you look perfect. I also have a set of those colored stacking spice tubs. My favorite color is orange and brown and my entire kitchen are the colors of those tubs.
I also have an entire drawer of almost entirely orange baking items. Like the vintage orange Tupperware measuring cups. I have 2 different orange color sets. One set was even my moms.
You should look into getting a vintage Lane hope chest. Its a god send for blanket and pillow storage.
We have so many that we had to get space bags to fit them all in it,lol

So much fun! 1 - no one cares if you wear makeup, we are here because of your personality (and you are pretty without it). 😊 2 - I love old cars, my dad had an original Beetle, and I still miss it. 3 - the linen cupboard is perfection. Decorating in small increments is what most normal people do. 4 - cats do understand, she is learning to trust. I suggest a water bowl. And you might want to hang a bird feeder outside for your other friends. 😂
I have a bird feeder and of course I have water out! Cats prefer water away from their food so it’s in a different location. Thanks for sharing your input about the decorating!

Just my thoughts, but I always have messes when I decorate. Especially when I set up/ take down Christmas. I actually relate better to folks who just keep it real. Love your collection of vintage!!

Fun video! Such a wonderful blanket storage idea. So pretty. How about also using your colorful suitcases for storage. Cute storage for cloth napkins. Suitcase on the bottom needs a little something to fill it up so we can see it in all its colorful glory! Looking forward to your next video.
You know I used to put items in those suitcases and then I forgot what was in them 🤣 so now I try to do open storage haha!
Love all your purposeful decorating! I too am going through a transition and am taking a critical eye at what I have for each season/holiday. Only the joyful get to stay😊 As I decorate from one to the next I pack away things in a certain area together and label. Then the next time around it ready and easier to decorate. Love your content❤ I hope your new job is going well!

We just went to a Volkswagen car show in our area. It was so cool! Mostly old vans and beetles, all vw. They even had vendors, I got a few ads from the 60s I plan to frame soon.
Yay, Blossom!! I am the same way with decorating... I get easily overwhelmed. I do one area at a time. Same with cleaning, actually! I loved seeing the vintage cars. Here in the Chicago suburbs we have the Volo Auto Museum which has lots of vintage and famous cars as well as more than cars (multiple vintage Showbiz Pizza/Chuck E Cheese animatronic bands!) and even has an antique mall. I plan to visit soon ☺

My childhood home 🇨🇦 was built in 1975- Looking back, we had an interesting amount of closets for a 3 bedroom bungalow (4, plus all the bedroom closets, and a linen closet inside the bathroom!) but I remember us keeping potato chips in the narrow “vacuum closet”.. along with the vacuum. Lol 👀 You go ahead and keep those Doritos wherever you need to! 😆

Both the linen cupboard and the kitchen shelf turned out so nicely! Pretty to look at and also practical. Most of the storage in my house is all practical and I'm not so good at making it pretty. 😂The car show looked magical. My uncle used to collect and restore old Volkwagen cars. Your footage brought back some memories!

I've been feeding a feral cat on my back patio for several months now, but he still doesn't trust me to be outside on the patio with him while he eats. But I can watch from the other side of my patio door. =)

I don't love modern day cars but i adore Vintage Cars 🥹 and Ofcourse the retro American diner, i even decorate my house to mimic American Diner 😅 . Give the cat a bowl of fresh water also. I have 4 outdoor cats I take care of that consider themselves mine. They came and stayed.
I have water outside but it is on the pathway away from the food. Cats generally like their water separate from the food

I like the quilt library! It's a great idea to display the things you love and use. I understand you don't have a lot of time with your new job. So why not decorate first and present the end result later? Saves you time and stress and it still be a great video! 😊 can you put up a shelve above the microwave? At the same depth as the cupboard? I saw adhesive shelves would that be a solution for decorating? You have to check the weight of course I also saw people hanging picture frames with command strips. I know they're a bit pricey but it's an alternative and it can brighten up the living room?? Lovely video!
I find that when I just do the end result people don’t like the content as much, unfortunately. It makes sense, I prefer to watch people decorating instead of the finished project. But I’ll keep it in mind ☺️

@@emilyretro Yes, it takes a long time with a feral cat. I adopted one that was in my backyard for a whole summer. i never had a cat before being allergic, but long story short, actualy stories! I took it in and felt like I couldnt deal with it so took it to the SPCA. But I kept looking at the photo of it on their website and the mama in me came out big time. So I ended up adopting it, it ook well to the litter box, but was not friendly, unless I was getting ready to feed it, then of course came the wrapping itself around my legs, but it took a few YEARS to get a bit affectionate, and the first year it did nothing but scratch the heck out of me! I mean it would jump me for no reason, I was so scared I thought Id end up with cat scratch fever. My daughter named her Coasty after a girl band she had been listening to when she first saw her out the window. So thats my long story short cat story! oh I did put a tote on the deck on its side, with a blanked when the weather got colder, I think she did use it. Well, sorry this is so long, but I love your videos! Always looking forward to the next one!. I grew up in the 60's so its so cool to see you embrace the era! Hugs!

@@emilyretro my fave finds are nice vintage fabrics at thrift shops. Just cut out 5 small quilts today for a group home. Also scored a 1950’s chiton donut maker - in the box!! Happy dance!
So here’s a question you may not want to answer. I volunteer at a thrift shop and several vintage polyester and cotton pieces/yardages come in regularly. Would you like them? They don’t sell but I could send them to you if you have a seamstress or use for another purpose? I hate putting them in the recycle bin when they’re so lovely!
I moved to a smaller house in retirement and I don't buy any furniture that doesn't have storage space in it. My footstools open and hold yarn, my coffee table is a chest etc. The way I decorate is I see some things that are dusty, then I take them down to clean and put something else there. Then I want to move the cabinet which leads me to moving 14 other pieces of furniture and I destroy my whole house. I actually started this train a rollin today when I brought home a few new pieces of dishes.

I loved your decorating and your blanket shelf. I think you can squeeze a few more in there! Car shows are fun. I used to live in Pontiac Illinois and they have a Pontiac museum and had car shows all the time. The VW buses are in Florida! My kids live in Venice have a beach bus!
