The Last Farewell ~ Roger Whittaker

- There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
Though death and darkness gather all about me
My ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
And the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return home safe again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
Written by Ron Webster from Birmingham England. A Silversmith, he was travelling home on a bus, one cold and rainy night from Birmingham's jewellery quarter, wishing he was somewhere warmer. He sent the lyrics to Roger and the rest is history.
This song will be played at the funeral of my mother next tuesday. After 96 years of loving it will be the last farewell. But she will always be with us. Forever love you mam
well said...
My mum loved this song too. It breaks me every time I hear it. God bless.
She in your heart
Your mum must have been a beautiful and smart woman........
So sorry for your loss. A little part of your mother lives on in you. Her legacy to the world.
Today a legend has gone to rest. Farewell, Sir. May your new journey be filled with wonder and joy.💗
May he smell again the fragrance of those islands
and watch the English mist roll through the dell.
💗
As a Vietnam veteran, this song touches me on several levels.
My father loved this song. I had it played at the end of his funeral. I play it in my car at times just for him. "I hope you can hear this dad" i say to myself. It always brings a tear to my eyes, like now as i write this. Boy i miss you dad. This is for you man. Love You.
Lovely sentiment...he lives in your heart.
Music can do this, fantastic, thanks for your reaction
Bless you, your words speak to many a mans heart, mine included!!
He will hear you if you believe he will!

Was with a coach load of fellow country music fans from the UK on a tour in the US in 1996. We were at a bar at the top of one of the hotels at Myrtle Beach, SC and a duo started singing this song. The whole group joined in and blasted the song out. The duo loved it, and it was a fabulous moment. RIP Roger.
A fitting tribute to Roger Whitaker, may he rest in peace.
No other decades will ever match the sixties and seventies - whether it be pop, rock, country, soul and this.
I have loved this song since Roger Whittaker recorded it; no other cover comes close 💖
Elvis did a really good cover of it.
@@donwenger2616 But Elvis wasn't in Roger's vocal league. Jim Reeves was another one in a million singer. Check out his song, Guilty.
@@donwenger2616 Elvis destroyed the song...absolutely terrible version.
@donwenger2616 yes Elvis is a great singer I love ❤️ all his 🎶 music 🎶,
Most underrated singer ever. I love his singing. Clear voice, beautiful songs.
He passed away now :(
R.I.P. Roger Whittaker! Your music will live on forever! The Last Farewell was one of my favorites! Thank you for the many years of memories! 😢💔👼🏼🙏🏼

I liked Roger’s voice so natural and easy to listen to, I wonder if he knew the Lord Jesus Christ?
But no decision is as important as the one Jesus highlights in Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
Sadly unless Roger repented for his sins and put his trust in Jesus he will not be resting in peace he will be in Hell.
Where will you be going when you die? Remember none of us no that day when we will die so don’t leave it to late to find the truth!

a real treasure died in france last year. I am in my 40's but my parents grew up listening to Roger. This classic song will live on forever. RIP Roger.
One of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. Only Roger Whittaker can sing it.
I used to know a Marlene Brown many, many years ago when we were in Jr. High. As a matter of fact. I believe I was in love with her. Long, long time ago.
Marlene you are so very correct. I could never imagine hearing anyone else sing this song. His voice is absolutely beautiful and such a beautiful song

My favourite song on K.B.C (Kenya) Sundowner Radio show. I first heard it on the 6.00 p.m show. The words, " for you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken words can tell.'' sounded so familiar. Turned out that I'd first heard them in my favourite poem "Like the sea and its waters" by Waigwa Wachira (RIP) I'm almost sure he was inspired by this beautiful song. Needless to say that I fell deeply and irrevocably in love with this song since then and it became my favourite on Sundowner. Rest in peace Roger Whittaker. We have loved your music dearly. More dearly than the spoken word can tell.
A tremendous voice. I could listen to this song over and over. So sad that we have lost so many great musicians so recently including Jimmy Buffet and Gordon Lightfoot and others Kenny Rodgers...etc
I absolutely love 'The Last Farewell sung by Roger Whittaker. One of my favorites actually.

Hello Myra, how are you doing ?
At 17..I ordered his Greatest Hits from an advert in a Sunday paper.. From the moment I first listened to him, I was hooked. The passing of a proper legend should always be full of tears and joy.. Also I won 2 Radio City mugs by knowing that he was born in Kenya 😍😁🇰🇪😭😭
So love this song ...pass me the tissues!
Corrienne Wynne Strong lovely song
I'm learning guitar .. Started in November ..acoustic..
Its so hard to learn...but grabbed the chords to this song and many others.. After learning the basic few x
Thanks to songs like these? I'm gradually getting better..
Ok...I'm not. It makes me sound accomplished If I say I am . ha ha ! ;-)
Oh I am happy you are learning guitar bc I am also a musician, especially if u play it yourself it will help to relax more, exercise as well. So it is really good so that u can post playing your guitar 👏👏👏 Have a great time playing guitar!!!
I play saxophone tin whistle and keyboard... But this is the hardest challenge for me! Years of not believing in myself... And chose, (now I'm fifty, with multiple sclerosis and in agony much of the time).. To do something I've always longed to do...
I believed it was impossible!
I've now written four songs this way... And can sing along ...its sticky at the moment and needs perfecting but I'm getting there!
And yes ..I'll upload one to you tube to share once I'm happy that I've managed to learn it off by heart! Xxx
Thanks love..you're a gem! Xxxxxx
Corrienne Wynne Strong Wowww you play many instruments is good for you and your relatives 😊
Have a great time my musician friend 💐
Rest in peace Roger. Thank you for the music and your classic tone.
This brings me back to a sweet time. What a wonderful voice and sweet capture of this endearing genre and, specifically, this piece. Not only that, but it reminds me of my father. He was not English (as in UK), but he was in the Navy. It reminds me of how much he loved my mom. I adore this precious song.
Thanks for love and compliment 🌹🌹
Played at my dads funeral on Friday!
Tears well each time I hear this beautiful song - the lyrics, the tune and melody, the voice and delivery - all combine to evoke emotion. Tears well, more so now that singer-songwriter Roger has become immortal
Good song coupled to a very appropriate video. One can easily imagine the pain the child on the moor feels as he sees the ship carrying his Father away knowing he probably shall never see him again. And as the song says the trip is a forced one the man does not want to go but is forced to do it. Hearing the lyrics I imagine the place he is leaving is a tropical island which has weather which contrasts sharply with that found in England. A nice description of the feelings one has when having to leave someone or someplace one loves behind.
L
I don't think Roger ever played in the Rainbow Hall in Kilmac
the song is about Gnr Philip having to leave Australia for England
This song suddenly popped in my head around 11 am Mountain Time on Thursday September 8 2022. About an hour later, I heard of QEII’s passing.
Always knew this guy as the whistler as a kid but his songs have stayed in my mind I'm 54 now rest in peace Roger your song live on and thanks for that

Hvala Pavla, želim ti lepo noč!*****
Silva Bežan love it
I love the video to this!! It is one of my favorite songs of all time and I do remember playing it on my French Horn a long time ago (it was actually the first piece I played by ear). This makes me want to play this piece again. Thanks. :)
The video gave me a whole new perspective on the piece itself. I always thought of it as someone who was in a beautiful location but had to go back to his homeland. On his way back, he had to face a battle. In the video, I see a son waiting for his father to return from the seas. The boy's father, the older man, is serving in the Royal Navy and had to go away into battle. In around 1:00 you see him looking at the sleeping boy with great sadness with the lyric "For you are beautiful; and I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken word can tell" (the night before he heads out ?). There is also a brief showed the mother and the father together happy (the mother could still be alive or she could have died along the way). Later it shows the battle and possibly the father briefly thinks about the son; who is looking out to sea waiting for his return.
I enjoyed playing this song by ear also on my saxophone. Once I heard it for the very first time, I visualized it and started playing it from the first note.
Thanks for watching, L Elayne.
L Elayne Sousa The boy in the video is probably a new recruit to the ship in a midshipman's capacity. He would not be rowed to the ship in his own boat if he was not an officer. Back then young boys started their career in the Royal Navy as midshipmen, the lowest officer grade
Richard Massey But it's made obvious here that the boy midshipman's captain is his own father, which makes things really difficult. A Captain can never be seen as playing favorites.
Brings back childhood memories, my parents liked this song.
RIP Roger Whittaker. God bless.

I have just read of his passing. I remember him well from my childhood. Sweet dreams xx
This was played at my grandmother's funeral last night. She was 92. Grandpa 94 , married for almost 70 years. Family was very important to her and she was blessed with 3 kids, 9 grandchildren and 1 great great child. She saw us all grow up far into adulthood. For 32 years I am proud to call you my grandma. And no one can take that away from me. You may not be with us anymore but heaven has gained an angel
The backing music really makes this song. More praise for them.
RIP Roger, this ones just for you.
Loved his songs. Such a strong voice.
Always and still do just love this song, a true classic.
A beautiful sad song, and so appropriate really, as there are times one leaves a place or a lover, and knows one shall never return, because of the ties we all have in life. The song describes very well the heartbreak we feel in such cases. Something that has happened to must of us if we have lived enough.
One of the most beautiful songs EVER! 🇨🇦

To anyone who reads this, My father was in the U.S.A.F. he was deployed to Korea in 1975 for 1-Year. In 1976 when I was age 15, my mother sister and I drove from Austin, Texas to Calf to a Air Force Base to pick him up and we spent our Summer vacation there, but as we went through El Paso and continued driving to Calf, I heard this beautiful song being played on the radio every few hours, I never new the name of this song or the Artist, I just always remember the last few words "FOR YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL" I searched for this today on Feb.7,2014 and I finally found it 38-Yrs later, thanks RUclips!
