Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World (Original Spoken Intro Version) ABC Records 1967, 1970

- "What a Wonderful World" [1970 Spoken Introduction Version] along with Oliver Nelson's Orchestra is a song written by Bob Thiele (as George Douglas) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1967. Thiele and Weiss were both prominent in the music world (Thiele as a producer and Weiss as a composer/performer). Armstrong's recording was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Intended as an antidote for the increasingly racially and politically charged climate of everyday life in the United States, the song also has a hopeful, optimistic tone with regard to the future, with reference to babies being born into the world and having much to look forward to. The song was initially offered to Tony Bennett, who turned it down. Thereafter, it was offered to Louis Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 -- July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo performance. With his instantly recognizable gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also skilled at scat singing (vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics).
Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong's influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general. Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to "cross over", whose skin color was secondary to his music in an America that was severely racially divided. He rarely publicly politicized his race, often to the dismay of fellow African-Americans, but took a well-publicized stand for desegregation during the Little Rock Crisis. His artistry and personality allowed him socially acceptable access to the upper echelons of American society that were highly restricted for a black man.
Armstrong died of a heart attack in his sleep on July 6, 1971 at the age of 69, 11 months after playing a famous show at the Waldorf-Astoria's Empire Room. He was residing in Corona, Queens, New York City, at the time of his death. He was interred in Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, in Queens, New York City. His honorary pallbearers included Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Pearl Bailey, Count Basie, Harry James, Frank Sinatra, Ed Sullivan, Earl Wilson, Alan King, Johnny Carson and David Frost. Peggy Lee sang The Lord's Prayer at the services while Al Hibbler sang "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" and Fred Robbins, a long-time friend, gave the eulogy.
Armstrong was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972 by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. This Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy's National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording. Recordings of Armstrong were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old, and that have "qualitative or historical significance."
"Some of you young folks been saying to me
" Hey Pops, what you mean 'What a wonderful world'?
How about all them wars all over the place?
You call them wonderful?
And how about hunger and pollution?
That ain't so wonderful either."
Well how about listening to old Pops for a minute.
Seems to me, it aint the world that's so bad
but what we're doin' to it.
And all I'm saying is see what a wonderful world
It would be if only we'd give it a chance.
Love baby, love. That's the secret, yeah.
If lots more of us loved each other
we'd solve lots more problems.
And then this world would be gasser.
That's wha' ol' Pops keeps saying."
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom, for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces, of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, sayin', "How do you do?"
They're really sayin', "I love you"
I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more, than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world

my sweet husband, God rest his soul, would turn this on and cry. His heart was so HUGE...so I bought him a plaque with this saying, "oh what a wonderful world" and hung it over his computer desk. He passed away this past February and now the sign is in my bathroom, where I see it every single day and remember how Rob made his corner of the world beautiful. Thank you, Lord for sending me that most wonderful man! Rest in peace, Robbie, till we meet again--I love you so much, always...and forever.
Diane, I am so sorry for your loss, please accept my sincere condolences. Your husband must have loved you so much and I’m sure you miss him. May you find comfort in your happiest memories.
Very saddened about your loss Diane. I lost my mom a couple of months back so I know how it is to lose a loved one. I am sure he is in a good place and looking over you with all the love in his heart. I hope and pray that you are given strength in this difficult time.

The world needs more people with this level of understanding. The world mourns the lack.
My daughter loved this song, she was born in 1973 and passed away in 2012 due to a car accident. Our family used this song along with Garth Brooks "The Dance" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" along with a video slide of photos of her growing up! She loved and left 3 handsome boys that are now young men that listen to theses songs and think of their mom. I miss her smiles and giggles 😔. Rest my sweet baby, see you someday soon😘

This man lived through a period of tremendous poverty, horrible racism, segregation and still had such a remarkably positive outlook on our world. The things people complain about today are peanuts to what this man lived through
To go through what he went through, and still come out of it with that optimissim is so insperational. Reminds me of Anne Frank's quote "In spite of all that I have been through,I still believe people are basically good".. If everyone kept that attitude, there wouldn't be the political diverseness on both sides...we could actually all come together and start making that wonderful world by healing our planet.
Millennials will complain about any little tiny thing. Glad that generation is being over taken now by the newer ones.
@@mrcoiganable2988 AMEN⚘
peanuts 😑🤔🤔??? are you BLACK
To say you can't be depressed or complain because others have it worse is the same as saying you can't be happy because others have it better
i remember when i was around 8-10 years old, my dad, may he rest in peace, used to play this song and sing along to it everytime he took us to school or anywhere were it was just me and him. He died august 2023 when i was 14 because of a 2 year long excruciating infection in the bottom of his foot. He was a type 1 diabetic. I just recently remembered this song and now i listen to it all the time. It brings me so much comfort and i always cry everytime i listen to it. I still feel his arms wrapping around me when times are hard and how i used to lay on his chest and listen to his heartbeat. God, i miss you so much baba. I hate not having you here anymore. Hopefully we will meet again soon. I love you forever.

Hello Susan!!! How are you doing? Hope am not being rude for writing you first??
it's 2023 and this is as relevant as ever.
This song makes me cry because it brings out the positive in the world when there’s
a lot of negative in the world
There's**
YOU Be the Positive, Sunshine!!!
While people talk about your typo, I'll say something a bit more relevant.
As much as there is much negative in the world, there are points of light. Right now it seems as if there is a lot, maybe too much negativity, but let's be a light as much as we can. That's all I'm gonna say.
God bless you!

Don't worry, coronavirus made positive a lot of people.
He dealt with so much brutal racism and struggles early in his life, yet never lost his vision of a better world or his faith in people. Such a talented artist. RIP Louis.
He is a legend💚
Your source for the racism he endured?
@@Aivottaja His new “Master of Modernism “ biography. When he and his band were playing Chicago circuits in the 20s and 30s, the cops there had a reputation for being particularly brutal towards black citizens. On one occasion, he was almost arrested for sitting near a white music executive’s wife and discussing business with her on a bus. He and his band had a rough time early on, yet Louis remained reluctant to even speak out towards racism for most of his life. He was just a musical genius of a generation who invented styles and improvs that changed jazz forever.

Wish there were more like him.
Such a beautiful song
This was played at my Aunts funeral. She was an amazing woman. Married her true soulmate. Her two oldest sons were in attendance at my parents wedding.
She outlived both parents, husband, and two siblings if not all 3. Came from the poorest / humblest backgrounds, and yet always seemed to have a smile to offer. I do wish that I had spent more time with her while I had the opportunity, but my father, her brother passed away when I was only 17. She knew that he wanted bigger / better things in life than what he had in his own, and off into the world I wandered.
She’s with my Uncle, my Dad, her parents, and numerous other relatives that she so fondly remembered. Life wouldn’t have been the same without Barbara Jean, and she did make it A Wonderful World 💖

She would say," from riding around in the back seat of my parents car with my brother and sister while my parents blasted the radio". Lol. God I still miss her so, I always will. XO

I lost my daughter in 72, she'd be 49 this year, and not a day goes by I don't think of her. Her favorite song was Jesus loves the little children. I wonder what she would look like, how she'd laugh, what she might have become. Mostly I wonder what it would be like to hold her, to share with her. It never goes away. I know your loss and feel for your heart ache. Much Love to you and yours.

@@Moncarmo yep, but it's not important, this guy was a very good man
@@Glassman9923 Ok, not every weed smoker is a bad person... Thanks for this information 😀
Thanksgiving 2018. 57 yrs old and still listening to this song. Hard times along the way and this was one song I turned to when times were rough. It gave me perspective, inspiration. He was like an old friend telling me "it will be ok. Look at the bright side, still a wonderful world."
Pops, thank you. Thru the years you still speak to me.
It is so good
Touching words Jacob.
👍👍
23 years old and listening to real music 👌
You speak truth brother, and it’s the same for me: perspective, inspiration and above all Love.
This song puts a smile on my face while it presses my heart and I cry with tears. Its a song that give you 3 different feelings at the same time. Beautiful song.

And this world would be a gasser

it already has.
Yeah thats right suddenly the world is instantly much worse now. Get out of your cosy bubble
It is 2020, and this whole song still gives me a glimmer of hope.
🙏
Me too
You just need hope and happiness. Don’t let your circumstances bring you down and make you depressed. This man also had hope and happiness, and he kept a positive outlook on life despite all the circumstances he was in. You can do the same and bounce back from this year
You are so right 🙏🙏🙏
This is a humbling song. The meek will inherit the world in God’s time, amen brother!
I can say I feel like you're a lucky person. Everytime I listen to this I cry and I love my woman
Something sooo powerful about this song. I'm a music scholar so I've listened to a vast variety of music throughout my life but this one song...I just can't find the words. It's Divine.
This was played as the final song at my pops’ funeral. He was the kindest, funniest, most charming man you’d ever have met. He’d been through hell and back in life, and still managed to keep a grin from ear to ear, and he’d always be full of jokes, and he could lighten up the darkest of days for anyone in a matter of moments, and he was just genuinely amazing. He’s my motivation, my inspiration, my hero. he was perfect, and now he’s gone. But I know he’s looking down on me, and I know it’s only a matter of time before I’ll meet him again❤️I love you pops👼🏼
Street Soldier so sorry
Street Soldier thank you for sharing your story... This world needs more men like your dad!!
aww why is it that the greatest people on earth leave so early or at least why does it feel like they always leaving early. If heaven exists, I can't wait to meet these great people!
thats awesome man
this man was way before his time wish he was still here
NuRo461 we aren’t even at his time yet, possibly one of the purest humans to ever live
yes
He was in his time. Just we have forsaken the way of caring for eachother. Not as race or religion. Government or ideas. But as a species. Struggiling to make our time on this rock bareable till we move on or our time is up, how ever you look at it.
If he was, we wouldn't value him. Somewhere along the line, we have lost the human being in most of us.
2024...we need this syle of music....keep everyone calm !!!
listening to this in 2024 ?
