E18: San Ysidro and the Tijuana stink

There is something rotten in San Ysidro... Sewage emanating from Tijuana has contaminated the Friendship Park area and lands around it so that the local health authority has closed everything down. The sewage is in the ocean as well and the beach leading up from the border for miles has been closed. In Imperial Beach further north there are signs that warn people of the unsafe sewage levels in the water and encourage people to avoid contact.
This sewage, in part, emanates from a very poor section of Tijuana between the Mirador and Los Altos neighborhoods from which, a stream of sewage flows through the border wall and down into the US Smuggler Gulch neighborhood and on to the Tijuana River.
The whole area stinks! Local residents complain, but a fix hasn't been implemented yet, but a new sewer water treatment plant in Tijuana slated to start up later this year may help.

Every year they have conversations and initiatives but nothing ever happens. Unfortunately a lot of the homes in Mexico are not build to code so much of the sewage goes to the rivers…

It certainly smelled like it! Kinda makes the crunchy feel of the ground feel even more gross.

I see that area from my kitchen window. The stink late at night and early morning is not nice.
