E24: Tecate and Migration #2. Putting the pieces together.
Tecate and its rugged mountains are the site of discontinuous stretches of border walls. The cartel coyotes take advantage of this to drive migrants to within sight of the border and drop them off. Migration #2 isn't your poor South and Central Americans, it's middle class and wealthier folks from around the world willing to pay upwards of $10k a head (I've heard numbers as high as $30K for those coming from China) to get across into CBP detention.

E23: Tijuana's Libertad neighborhood is a border crossing hotspot, but construction is coming...
Просмотров 14510 часов назад
A big new highway megaproject being built across Libertad neighborhood's northern edge along the border wall will certainly change the feel of the place. Lots of houses have been torn out exposing some of the busy crossing spots. We learn more about Alfredo's life, about CJNG's control of Tijuana and their tamping down of certain types of crime, and even cruise past one of master tunnel builder...
E22: Libertad, and the Cartel state of play in Tijuana. CJNG and Sinaloa warring in the 'burbs
Просмотров 49520 часов назад
Tijuana driving interview with Alfredo part 2, we drive from Zona Norte across to Libertad, the location of much of the cross border traffic we search the spots where the migrants get through or over the wall. We cover the current state of play of the cartels in Tijuana, the fighting between CJNG and Sinaloa in the eastern Tijuana colonias, and get Alfredo's take on Mexican politics and why Mor...
E21: Tijuana's Zona Norte, Migrants in the City of Vice: Touring Mexico's most infamous city

Come along for the ride as we ride through Tijuana's red light district, Zona Norte and learn about everything from drugs, to prostitution, to the migrant shelters blocks away from the brothels and rent-by-the-hour hotels.
E20: Tijuana and The End of the Wall. Friendship Park, narco corridos, and comparative demography.
Просмотров 41814 дней назад
In the first of a few Tijuana exploration episodes, I head to Friendship Park in Mexico where the wall has some unique security features and armed guards making sure nobody tries making a run (or swim) for the US. #tijuana, #friendshippark, #demographics, #norteño, #narcocorridos,#bajacalifornia
E19: La Bocana Baja California. Surfers Callum and Jake Robinson and Jack Rhoad killed in April 2024
Просмотров 33721 день назад
On April 28th or 29th 2024 Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson and their American friend Jack Rhoad were killed just south of a remote beach in Baja California called La Bocana and their bodies were dumped down a 15 foot well. When they failed to show up at their planned Airbnb in Rosarito a few days later, the call went out to find them. Eventually one of the men's phone was located a...
E18: San Ysidro and the Tijuana stink
Просмотров 11321 день назад
There is something rotten in San Ysidro... Sewage emanating from Tijuana has contaminated the Friendship Park area and lands around it so that the local health authority has closed everything down. The sewage is in the ocean as well and the beach leading up from the border for miles has been closed. In Imperial Beach further north there are signs that warn people of the unsafe sewage levels in ...
E17: San Luis Rio Colorado is a major migrant crossing point... and I get into some trouble!
Просмотров 21421 день назад
Episode 17: San Luis Rio Colorado. I spend some time scouting along the wall and then find myself in a dangerous spot where law enforcement personnel have exchanged gunfire with the cartel at one of the major migrant crossing points. Next, I check out SLRC's main migrant shelter before heading back to 12 7/8 (from the previous San Luis video) and find the IDs of people who have crossed to apply...
E16: Narco money laundering destroys Mexican small business
Просмотров 35Месяц назад
Godfather-esque scenes are an element of everyday life as cartel narco-businessmen take over northern Mexico small businesses. The ever present threat in the mind of the entrepreneur isn't just customers and inventory, it's if they grow too big, the cartel will come take their business away from them, or worse. It's shocking to see the level of penetration the cartels have into the every day Me...
E15: Migrants and graffiti artists in Mexicali
Просмотров 111Месяц назад
Mexicali has been synonymous to different people for things as diverse as agriculture, libertinism, drug running, prostitution, graffiti, and I'm sure a whole lot more. We take a tour through some of the city and explore some of its secrets, including getting a deep dive into the city's graffiti culture while learning about migration through the city and into the California Imperial Valley. #bo...
E14: One of the most infamous border crossing spots, 12 7/8 outside of San Luis Rio Colorado
Просмотров 397Месяц назад
In this episode I head down to the Arizona/Baja California town of San Luis Rio Colorado, but not before stopping in at one of the most famous border crossings along the US/Mexico border. A place where the local Cocopah tribe has forbidden the federal government to build the wall and through which come thousands of migrants a year.
E13: Wanna save 75% on that dental bill? Check out Mexican border city dentistry in Los Algodones.
Просмотров 140Месяц назад
I swing down to Los Algodones, Baja California, Mexico for a teeth cleaning and a walk through town. Lot's of people avoid going to the border for SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper medical and dental care, and super cheap prescriptionless pharmacies because they imagine it is dangerous. In places like Algodones, it's not. I've got a how to, on where to go, where to park, places to visit, food to eat, so le...
Ep12: Interview with a Cartel migrant smuggler. Cartel recruiting, prison after getting caught, etc
Просмотров 52Месяц назад
The big last portion of the interview. Topics covered: 1. How the cartel recruits young people on social media. They are SUPER successful at drawing in young people. 2. The need to not flash cash and show off the money you are making. It's a big no-no to draw attention to yourself. 3. the cell-like nature of the cartel hierarchy for safety from law enforcement. 4. The pay is the same whether yo...

Jane tells the story of her last migrant run. A nerve wracking situation at a gas station earlier in the evening when the migrants in her trunk started to thump around as she was parked next a police officer. The cartels are directly responsible for the migrant and drug (especially fentanyl) crises that are plaguing the country. Illegal drug overdoses have killed over 100,000 Americans in each of the last 4 years. If we don't understand what is happening south of the border, and what the cartels are doing, what hope do we have of solving the problems?

Zona norte actually is not that bad compared to other parts of TJ (I.e. Sanchez toboada, Buenos Aires). Zona rio is quite nice. Nice club there called Bosse. El Alebrije is by the border by that wack strip club Deja Vu. That’s where I go to get regular girls. When all else fails, you got Hong Kong. And now the new minimum is $150. Some bitches will charge $200. That’s more than German FKKs with better service. They better beg careful before they price themselves out

This is a common thread in developing countries, that the local police are not much different than the criminals. I remember getting shaken down for all my extra cash by a criminal taxi company that were recommended by the local police when crossing the border from Peru to Ecuador many years ago.

Not me! Having grown up in Southern Arizona I wanted to see what Sasabe looks like. Here the first half is watching connection to a drone and the second half looking at a road, speeding through a town so fast that one cannot see the houses or historical buildings. Where is the post office? school, or any stores, saloons, or even a medical center? Very disappointing. Someone needs to go there and make a wonderful video of this unique village of a bygone era! We used to play Sasabe (basketball) and I was always curious as to what it was like...Can't really tell in this video. Guess I'll have to go there in person. 🤔
