    That's quite the unlucky smack to the cheek, but that was probably the best place he could have gotten hit in the head. Could have been worse like, the temple, jaw bone, ear, back of head, or nose bridge.

    Can anyone here comment about higher-level umpires not watching the play happen? I only umpire high school softball, but our books constantly talk about watching the play happen so you can judge an errant throw before it reaches the bag so you know to move for a tag play and stuff like that.

    • @timbowilderbeeste8709
      @timbowilderbeeste8709 3 года назад

      Kids aren't pros though. Take your cue from the commentator, who said he thought he'd seen it all up to that point - how many outfield umpires in MLB have you seen drilled by an errant throw to the head? These guys are throwing the ball at near pitcher speeds, no way a pro umpire can spare the time to look at players tossing a ball only to refocus on the target and do their job, and why would they when, as pointed out, it's virtually unheard of for fielders to throw so wildly that they hit outfield umpires? About the only time an ump gets hit is the guy at home plate - comes with the territory.

    This is why umpires are often taught to watch the release from the fielder. Once the umpire is sure the throw won't hit him, then move the eyes to the play. There is usually enough time between the release and the catch at first to lock in and get a good look to officiate the play.

    • @ahuddleofpenguins4842
      @ahuddleofpenguins4842 3 года назад +1

      True, but with mlb fielders throwing so hard and fast, you might not have time, especially with the ball coming from the middle infield. Moving your eyes during the windup is probably the better option most of the time, with this exact play being the risk, or occasionally missing a call on a ball clanging in the dougout on a wild throw.

    • @timbowilderbeeste8709
      @timbowilderbeeste8709 3 года назад +3

      @@ahuddleofpenguins4842 As the commentator said, he'd thought he'd seen it all to that moment. That tells you how unlikely something like this is at MLB level, and why an outfield umpire wouldn't bother checking on the line of the throw. As someone who's been a catcher, outfielder and umpire, your first responsibility to the latter is to your duties and the players you're adjudication on - you don't even have time to consider yourself, or would even bother. You set yourself and focus entirely on the play ahead of you. With split seconds involved with throws, the last thing you'd want to be doing is watching a player's release for your own welfare, only to track across and try and instantly take in the dynamic of what's going on at first base, as in this example. In a close call you have a hitter's foot lunging for the base, the first bastman's glove reaching out expectantly for the ball, your ears are hopefully tuned to the sound of ball hitting leather. With all that blur of movement, it would be a huge ask to have an umpire switch from looking at the shortstop or second base over to first base, and be able to acquire and focus on all those key points in an instant. It's much easier if you are focused on the whole chain of movement building up to the climatic fraction of a second that requires your judgement.

    • @bobbirgenheier241
      @bobbirgenheier241 3 года назад

      No, not true. In this scenario he is watching for tag, touch, catch, interference and obstruction at first base. He was set up exactly as he was taught. You wouldn't expect the throw at the MLB level to be that far off the mark.

    • @michaelladerer8163
      @michaelladerer8163 3 года назад

      @@bobbirgenheier241 You are correct. He is in the perfect position and you would not expect an major league throw to be that far off. But if you don't know where the ball is, you'll be lying on the ground and won't be able to make any of those calls. The tag, catch and touch can't happen without a ball, and obstruction before the batter reaches base is normally called by the homeplate umpire.

      This late in the play the umpire is simultaneously watching the runner's foot and listening for the _smack_ of the ball hitting the the first baseman's mitt. So he's not watching the fielder's throw to first. (At least I think, not positive)
