    I played as a catcher for several years and got smacked in the head by bats few times, including one kid I went to school with who threw it backwards towards me (hit me in shoulder but not hard). I wouldn’t say we were friends but we were good term acquaintances by the time we were in high school. One day he and I were talking and out of the blue he apologized to my surprise. When asked him what about, he said “for purposely throwing bat at you”. I just laughed because that was years before and I had forgotten all about it. In hindsight though I have to wonder how many times it was intentional to hit me by the others 😋🤷‍♂️

    Computer strike zone would allow catchers to back up. cte is known science now. Mitigating the risks is ethical practice. The umpires are calling very safe strike zones now, but it's physically impossible to call strike at letters and belt without a bias.

  • @Wolf-wc1js
    @Wolf-wc1js 8 месяцев назад +59

    In Smith vs Ozuna, Smith was not the first guy to get hit by his backswing. If it’s only one catcher, it’s the catcher but if multiple catchers are getting hit by the backswing, it’s on the hitter to adjust

    • @griffenberg
      @griffenberg 8 месяцев назад +28

      No it isn't, not getting hit by the backswing is entirely 100% on the catcher. Catchers setup in the front of the catchers box often going over the line out of the catchers box trying to get closer to the plate to frame pitches this is why we have seen a massive increase in catchers interfearence calls. it is the responsibility of the catcher to not get hit by the backswing as he has 2 some odd feet he can move back in the catchers box but he won't.

    This isn't my device. But I was a catcher myself playing baseball. This one boy would come to the plate and I hated it when he did. He would set his feet like a normal batter. Then when the pitch is coming he would move all around the box and always hit the back of my glove. He just couldn't stand still as the pitch came. Busted my hand up for 8 years of baseball. Only once did a umpire call em out for hitting me. It didn't !after how far back I got.

      How can a catcher interfere with himself? (Just kiddin'.)
      Yes. That's interference.

      Yes. But it was a home run. What are they going to do? Award Gomez home?

      @@jetwestbrook Well... I'd imagine that the league has a rule for just that instance. The runner is entitled to have the base paths and the bases unblocked, after hitting a home run. If someone were to get in his way, and causing an event that would prevent him from doing so... I'm pretty sure the league would overlook an untouched base and award it to the runner.
      Could you imagine being able to force a runner out of the base path and off the field, whenever you felt like it? Now, that would be something to see. I think I'd pay to see that new rule change taking place.
      Albert Bell used to push the fielders out of his way, like a linebacker.

    Should be like hockey. If you leave bench to join in then you're out.

    When this happens the umpire needs to stop the game, clear the stands. Then resume play at the umpires description.

    You mean to tell me after all this time , to this day , Carlos Gomez never crossed the plate and it still counts as a home run ?

    Carlos retired with no rings and Freddie is on his way to winning a couple more. Clearly freeman got the last laugh cause he’s on a contender now and Gómez isn’t even playing🤣
    Edit: it’s perfect that he played for the Houston Asterisks

      Keep bringing in these 3rd world country players and the game of Baseball will be ruined within 10 yrs. We have plenty of kids putting in their time for the game parents spending thousands of dollars here in US.In my opinion it's a slap in the face to bring in these foreign players let other countries build their own league then we can have
      A true world series.
