Thank you for doing this timeless classic. Spoof comedy is sometimes difficult to understand. Literalism and the Jest of things are always the key. And some improv. That's Airplane in a nutshell. if you want a real classic spoof comedy. Mel Brooks was a genius at it. I very much suggest a Reaction to High Anxiety-1977. It is a brilliant and amuzing tribute to Alfred Hitchcock. I also recommend The Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers. Return Of The Pink Panther-1975, The Pink Panther Strikes Again-1976, Revenge Of The Pink Panther- 1978. These are comedy masterpieces. I think You would enjoy them. Well just a few suggestions. Hope you had a fun Birthday🎂🎂🎂. Peace. 🙏

As an old-fart Generation Z guy, I feel that "Airplane!" needs a glossary for the convenience of the Zoomers. Young folks always look mystified that there are weird religious cults at airports in this movie, but it was a real thing. As was smoking on airplanes! I also feel that they might not know what this was parodying in the first place, as the original (and bad, let me add) "Airport" movies have been almost completely forgotten. Anyway, happy birthday, lady!

Rule of Threes! This movie follows that rule almost religiously. You found a two, when the guitar only knocked out the little girl's IV twice (Jill Whelan also played Vicki Stubing on the TV series The Love Boat at the time this movie was released). I found two fours: (1) Lloyd Bridges character does the "I picked the wrong week to quit..." joke four times, and (2) the religious people asking for donations at the airport. In both of these cases, the fourth occurrance of the joke was even more extra than the third one (Lloyd Bridges jumps out the window and Robert Stack beats up all the people from all the religions).
By the way, the little statue on the airplane's dashboard is St Christopher. For Catholics, he's the patron saint of travelers, and people put those little statues on their car dashboards for protection against danger.

Really love this movie! Been watching Airplane! since I was 6 years old and it's what got me into love airplanes so much! Glad you reacted to this movie. Fun fact: the airplane that they used at Los Angeles International Airport was a TWA (Trans World Airlines) Boeing 707-100 and the cockpit in the movie was a modified replica of the Convair CV-880 cockpit

If you're confused about the Black pilot. That really is Kareem Abdul Jabbar, one of the greatest Basketball players ever.
And he's wearing his Basketball gear and glasses when they drag him out.
He always was accused of upping his game for the Playoffs, hence breaking character, having a go at the young kid, Joey. That's it really.

Why is he wearing a basketball outfit? The kid says it. Hes Kareem Abdul Jabar.. he was a HUGE basketball star in the 70s. He also is famous for being in a Bruce Lee movie.

It's even funnier if you know the cast, 3 of the most serious actors ever were given big roles: Peter Graves ("Mission: Impossilbe" and "Biography"), Robert Stack ("Unsolved Mysteries" and "The Untouchables") and Lloyd Bridges ("Sea Hunt") plus the whitest woman on TV Barbara Billingsley is the one who speaks the slang language 'jive' (you cut her scenes). And the funny Leslie Nielsen was a serious actor before this, he starred in the classic sci-fi film "Forbidden Planet" with the beautiful Ann Francis.

  • @rickardroach9075

17:35 Leslie Nielson isn't the star; this film has more of an ensemble cast. He does star in ''The Naked Gun'' films however.

  • @meheuck

Other people have pointed out that this movie was designed as a deadpan satire of disaster movies, which were popular at the time. What's also notable is that most of the primary cast, including Leslie Nielsen, were generally not comedy actors, they did serious dramas mostly; the intention was that the bizarre things they were made to do would look funnier. At one point, Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack were rehearsing one of their scenes, and Bridges said, "I don't understand where the joke is here," and Stack replied, "WE'RE the joke."
As you know, after this, Nielsen changed gears and almost completely stuck to comedy roles for the rest of his life. In fact, his final appearance was a cameo in SPANISH MOVIE, though obviously he was dubbed by another actor since he spoke no Spanish. It was never released in America, even though most of the movies being parodied (THE ORPHANAGE, THE OTHERS, THE SEA INSIDE) were pretty well known here; I bought a Spanish DVD of it and watched it on a region free player. I don't know if that's streaming where you are, but I would be curious to see you react to it.

This Is a spoof of a couple of airplane disaster movies that were made in the 70’s, they were Airport ‘77 and Airport 79 the Concorde. I saw this movie in theatres when I was 9.
The woman concerned about her husband wanting a second cup of coffee was a joke about a famous coffee commercial in the 70’s where women were shocked when they would be out with their husbands and they would take a second cup of coffee when they didn’t at home and it was because of the coffee brand, I think it was either Folgers or Maxwell house coffee.
