It's critical with the available technology today to try multiple brand's and designs. I took your advice and tried 4 different bows, three different brands and settled on the Hoyt Alpha X. All of my hunting is done near my residence in coastal NC so the 30" fit my style of hunting from a saddle even with a 29.5 " draw length. Great content!
When you did the ‘wind gust’ test, it seemed like you exerted more force on the PSE than you did the Matthew’s. You pushed/pulled it harder for a longer duration.
It really doesn't matter how hard you push or pull the bow, it's really at what point you release the bow and how stable it is to rebalance from that point. Physics is going to prove that the longer riser is going to be easier to balance... it's like a tight roper, they use a very long pole to help stabilize and balance as opposed to a short stick.
Thanks for the run down on how to select a bow. You are so right that a bow for a person is specific to the individual. Most manufacturers make great equipment so it just boils down to side by side for everyones decision. I picked a Darton over a Bowtech and Mathews last year and am pleased with that personal choice.
Thank you for these videos, after a several year break I’ve gotten back into shooting with my grandson. Your process of working with clients to score bows is really good and solid, great job. We were out shooting Friday and my grandson is consistently low right 12”. Can you do a video for us beginners on what to look for so we understand the problems we are experiencing and how we mayaddress the problems at home?
Something that I have found very critical for me is how sensitive and constant a bow is to form. I find that different bows may be more or less forgiving to each individuals hand placement and release. I test this during my tuning phase by shooting multiple arrows through paper to see how small hand placement changes and torque affects arrow tune. This seems to help with overall accuracy and consistency in most cases.
I hope they focus on draw cycle and long range accuracy. And do this test outdoors. And throw some real world durability testing (who hasn't dropped their bow before).
The fact Mathews made a LIGHTER aluminum bow than the RX8 and RX8 Ultra, which is fricking CARBON, and made it FASTER.... blows my mind. Oh and it's way cheaper. Oh and the accessories are basically the same, maybe better in some ways and worse in others. (This is coming from someone who loves his RX7-Ultra and isn't upgrading this year anyway)
The draw cycle of the Lift sucks. The Hoyt is amazing. The rest I agree with you. But seriously a lot of us mathews fanboys are not happy Mathews decided on an aggressive cam (but any engineer would see they had no choice with their new design of shaving weight at all costs). We are now sutck with a "stiff" draw that wasn't good on the cross centric cams to begin with. And now they made it worse to sell to people who shoot more at the place they buy than out in the woods. SMDH. Nobel Prize to Mathews marketing department. Talk about "vendor lock-in" - if you don't know that term you and I cannot be friends.
It's only like a tenth of a lb on paper right? The switch weight mods from other bows won't fit from what I've heard. So the only thing interchangeable is the 800 dollar stabilizer set up, right? I have an rx7, and my rx8 showed up today, I personally like the hoyt grip, and draw cycle better, always have. Both great bows im sure, to each their own, etc...
@@WolfinWolvesClothing713oh for sure. I love my RX7, I was just surprised that the middle finger Mathews was giving carbon bows paid off when they made this one so light.
@@WolfinWolvesClothing713 Yeah...only 0.1th of a lb on paper. Also $700 cheaper than the RX8. The point is that Mathews achieved a bow that weighs what the carbon bows do at an aluminum riser price.

I’ve been out of archery due to injury. When I started, I’m 2009, I picked up a 70lb. PSE Dream Season and practiced with almost 200 arrows daily for a full year before taking it hunting. On my first hunt I scored a 338 lb. Boar at 40 yards and when the arrow landed, the boar literally fell over dead. I was always a rifle hunter and wanted to see what all the hype I was hearing from buddies that bow hunted were talking about. Now I know! Well I’m a lot older (62) and way more beat up but I’m wanting to get back at it again with a bow and wanted to know if I can still use the PSE since it was fast in its day or is there a better system for me available?
I’m looking at the 33”. I’ll fly out there and have you help me. 😁 I currently shoot the RX7U in 80#. Looking at the new Alpha X, Lift, SR Core, and Elite. Wanting to stick with either 75 or 80 pounds, so the Bowtech may already be out unless we can get a SX80 in the mix. I’m also interested in the Prime, but I don’t have a Prime dealer close to me.
Nice job, and since Keith’s #2 priority was Accessories, did anyone film his reaction at the cash register once he saw the cost of the Mathews stabilizers and quiver system? It’s almost like paying for another bow..😢
I went from pse to xpedition a couple years ago just because I wanted a complete change. I went from light to a heavy bow. Still getting used to it,but I think I like shooting the heavy bow.
I would love to see a video like this with the longer version bows! While not the focus of this video the speeds generated at 27” draw and 60 would be interesting. Good process, great content!
To me, any of these bows would be an enormous upgrade. But, I would have to pass on the PSE because of the short riser. Being 6 feet tall and having a 30 inch draw, I've found them unstable. Which you actually showed.
@longshotdiedtired1582 For the longest time (20 of my 30+ years of shooting a bow), I've gravitated to the shorter ATA bows. With short risers. Mainly because of being a treestand hunter. But, in the last few years, I've been looking at bows at least 32 inches ATA. And with longer risers. My 2 bows right now are a 2007 Diamond Triumph that is 31.5 ATA with a 23 inch riser, and my new 2022 Bear Legit that is a little shorter at 30 inches ATA, but has about a 26 inch riser. They are night and day as far as stability goes. The Legit hardly moves at all in my hand, but the Triumph wants to sway almost. Any significant wind, and it's all over the place.
Do you have a breakdown for draw length to bow length axel-to-axel? I am 5'9" and have about a 28.5 draw length and shoot a 34 axel-to-axel bow, should I be shooting a 29.5?
I completely understand the following that Matthews has, it is well deserved. I also really do like Hoyt, I've owned them before and they are rock solid bows you can't go wrong with. All that said, I'm a Bowtech guy for life, for many reasons but the deadlock system alone is enough for me to be on team Bowtech.
I went through all these tests about three weeks ago. Money wasn't a consideration, all about feel and comfort. In the end, I went with the Mathews LIFT 29.5, the Mathews site, the Mathews new QAD rest, and the attached quiver with a 12 inch bar out front and an 8 inch bar outback.
No Mathews hate here. Again, great video. Really enjoy the customer tune videos. BTW, currently shooting Mathews but have a couple of the PSE bows as well. This is coming from a competion target 3D archer.
I wish i had someone to go through bows like this with. Would have made a big difference for me a few years ago when i bought my Axius Ultra. Which i love but maybe I would have ended up with something different.
Great job guys, how's the let-down on the Lift? I couldn't let-down my trx it'll pull my shoulder out of the socket also very jumpy. I never went back to mathews because my Halon x comp was jumpy too. I hate jumpy bows.
Very jumpy. Watch him draw it. It seems like it makes noise it lumps into the back wall so hard. Looks like a deer would spook! I shot it today and I’m in Wisconsin where everyone shoots a Mathew’s. Not for me.
So I have said this before every person should shoot the bow blind folded first as long as u can do it safely because it makes a huge difference in feel and balance and it takes away your visial bias. And if u give the bow to them and they dont know which one they are shooting then it takes away any bias they may have. I have coached archery for a number of years and if u start people off like that it really helps them key in on the aspects that are naturally a good fit for them. It works people need to try it more
Got to talk with Matt McPherson for like 20 mins the other day at a coffee shop. He is one of the most down to earth nice guys you will ever meet. And yes his bows are the best!
It’s really funny how they started out with” it’s one man’s opinion” and continually reiterated that point , but so many idiots calling it wrong. Go make your own channel and express YOUR OPINION instead of hating and being a troll in the comments. Good job guys. Nice to see a lay persons point of view.
Can you possibly do a review on the APA archery black mamba bow. I’m just curious to see if their claims of 360 fps IBO speed is real. They also have some neat technology.
Love the Mathews system have owned a zillion bows and kept Mathews around the past several years but I’m not buying into longer riser being more stable in the real world. The target bow risers all in the past have been very short on riser length and scores have not changed since longer risers were brought into the world. ATA rules stability.
It all depends on the person. I went in to the shop and shot all these bows but I went in thinking I was getting the lift but I ended up going with the rx8 as I felt it was the smoothest drawing bow

Nice job, and since Keith’s #2 priority was Accessories, did anyone film his reaction at the cash register once he saw the cost of the Mathews stabilizers and quiver system? It’s almost like paying for another bow..😢
Sir, do you think you could do a torque Tunability category.
What's ur thought on Matthew's mission switch for a beginners bow. Shot hoyts in early 2000's but now wanting to start shooting again.
Was the pse set to 80 or 85%? 90% feels considerably different than the 80 or 85
picking the mathews grip?? hahah i had to commment because you said people would be on your ass for it!! 😅😂😅 great video. 👍
Great ride, not sure of the destination????
This video was very informative and I wanna see the 33 inch version!
Nice work MFJJ. This gentleman chose what he preferred. 👍
Geez I wonder who wins? 🤔
I went from pse to xpedition a couple years ago just because I wanted a complete change. I went from light to a heavy bow. Still getting used to it,but I think I like shooting the heavy bow.
A comparison between the Lift and Mach 30 on the outdoor range with a finished setup, would be interesting.
ya i think the lift might pull out just because of the stability
I am looking at the Mathews and the Bowtech. I’m leaning Mathews as of now, but I haven’t shot either of them personally. Thanks for the content.
The PSE Mach 34 and levitate are definitely the better choice for us bigger guys
Great video! Definitely interested to see how it swings with the longer ATA to throw the Ethos into the ring
The dog in the beginning 😂 give me your hand
I completely understand the following that Matthews has, it is well deserved. I also really do like Hoyt, I've owned them before and they are rock solid bows you can't go wrong with. All that said, I'm a Bowtech guy for life, for many reasons but the deadlock system alone is enough for me to be on team Bowtech.
Sponsored by Mathew’s😂😂😂
Loved the comparisons for this 5’10” guy!!!😅
Great videos as always, appreciate the insight gentlemen..
Matthews who would’ve thought. It’s a good bow mines on order your videos always have good content. Thanks.
What is it that causes some bows to jump forward more then others? It seemed like the Hoyt and Bowtech jumped the least
Just wondering if you would class the CHECKMATE QUIVER as a PSE Quiver
Great job guys, how's the let-down on the Lift? I couldn't let-down my trx it'll pull my shoulder out of the socket also very jumpy. I never went back to mathews because my Halon x comp was jumpy too. I hate jumpy bows.
Very jumpy. Watch him draw it. It seems like it makes noise it lumps into the back wall so hard. Looks like a deer would spook! I shot it today and I’m in Wisconsin where everyone shoots a Mathew’s. Not for me.
What are the bow legs on the PSE?
Great information. Thx for posting this video!
Mathew, Hoyt great bows but I'm finally turning in my 2008 PSE Stinger for the Carbon PSE mach 30.
PSE In Increment Adjustments Are So Sweet. Again To Each Their Own For Your Fit.
What about the new Darton bows?
Junk
Awesome!!! I want to come experience one at 33 and more weight!
I need to know i am between sx80 and lift 29.5
No camera man discount???? Always enjoy these side by side comp's
Love the Mathews system have owned a zillion bows and kept Mathews around the past several years but I’m not buying into longer riser being more stable in the real world.
The target bow risers all in the past have been very short on riser length and scores have not changed since longer risers were brought into the world. ATA rules stability.
Would love to see a longer ata comparison...and if your feeling generous, a "best bow for long draw archers" segment (33")
It all depends on the person. I went in to the shop and shot all these bows but I went in thinking I was getting the lift but I ended up going with the rx8 as I felt it was the smoothest drawing bow
What is his draw length JJ? Sorry if i missef this earlier on in the video.
27.5" (I am the guy from the vid)
