I had a very terrible hand technique and I was breaking stick left and right 😂😭😭 but this morning before going to church, I watch this video and I life changed forever in just few minutes🙌🏽🙌🏽 I played the whole service today and I didn’t break any stick 🥺🥺🙌🏽🙌🏽 I was using the most weak and cheap stick!!!!!! Thank you so so much, you have changed my life. God bless you!!!
@zimgir5000 Thanks for your input. The first 'grip' I demonstrated is important. It shows the stick being held in a natural way - the way you'd grab a stick if someone threw it at you and you had to react fast. Throughout the lesson I explain how to refine that basic grip into something a little more useful. This lesson was designed for someone who's never played before (hence "The Basics"), so I try to take them through it gradually.
Excellent video with some things I hadn't been taught in high school snare drum 101! You have a clear, concise manner and I can already see that you're an excellent teacher. I've got to set aside some time to view your other lessons. Thanks so much!
Thank you for explaining. I will be watching the rest of your videos. I played woodwinds since 4th grade. Now, 30 years later I want to learn to play percussion. I appreciate the lessons!
Wow thank you so much for this, I cannot believe how hard it is to find a beginners stick technique video. Pages of results for “new drummers learn this sick beat to RAWK” but I’m like “Uhhm know how to hold the sticks, sorry”
Finally I found a video that is giving great instructions on how to hold drum sticks! But it is quite hard to see the sticks with a black background and black shirt.
im a junior in highschool wanting to start playing drums and i want something i can practice on for just the basics like this that wont make too much noise at night in my house whats something i can get to practice on that will help with technique but isnt gonna piss everyone in my house off?
I may be being pedantic, but i believe the "fulcrum" sweet spot you're referring to is called the "node point". The fulcrum can be anywhere on the stick, its the where point of axis not only it"s sweet spot. No? The node point of any resonant object is around 2/3s in. Look at where a vibraphones put the holes to mount the bars or where drum manufacturers put the lugs in the shell. These are node points.
I’m drummer now for 4 years, I realized a while ago that I don’t hold my sticks correctly and I’m moving my right arm too much so I have 0 speed. I’ve watched several video’s on how to hold my drumsticks correctly but none of them seem to help my right hand refuses to cooperate, how can I make this go away?
This is why I love Vic Firth: the flag on the sticks always gives you a proper, perfect fulcrum. Perhaps that’s the purpose of Vic Firth. Coincidence? I think NOT!!!!!!!!!!
dude im a total noob and while playing with my vic firth sticks, i found the flag to be the best fulcrum point then i come here and see your comment! youre absolutely right!
sorry to say, but there are a few things that arent quite right, dont hate me on this, and correct me if needed but. when you 'Buzz' your little finger (my english isn't fluent you will have to excuse me for that) does this wierd twitch, which means that when you would do it faster, you wont have the same result, or reaction from the stick. and you can hurt yourself in the process. or is that completely, completely the wrong end of the stick? (lol)
Thanks for great video. When you hit the drum, how does the interaction between back finger and drum stick? The way I am doing is swing drum stick between back fingers and palm using thumb and first joint of index finger as pivot point. Is it correct? Thanks
However properly(or naturally) I begin , within moments I feel my left hand is stiffening and it is completely different from the right hand grip.....cannot get rid of this😣...maybe i've grown a habit
So I've been playing percussion for 6 years now, and learned a bad habit. What I'm doing wrong is gripping too tightly at the fulcrum and not using my back fingers, so the first note sounds good but the second note produces a lot less sound. I know I need to use my back fingers, but don't know how to actually do it. Any good way to practice using those back fingers to make my doubles even? Thanks!!!
Don't listen to this guy plz, his grip is terrible. But, i would say, you don't really use the back fingers too much to make a diddle. Just tighten the middle finger a little bit to make it easier to diddle.
that pad is too hard. beginners band in 1965 we had rubber pads like rubber on a superball. sticks bounced great. i hate all these new pads. what they dont makem anymore ?
Can someone tell me how this type of snare is called or is it homemade, i find it pretty convenient for pratice without alot of noise ( yes im noob af) Thanks !
Hi David. Question if OK. For people with disabilities who want to learn to play or continue to play is they have arthritis, cerebral palsy, stroke, limb loss or limb differences, etc. that reduce or take away thumb grip, would you suggest playing with an assistive grip device, or do you have experience with them? Grips like a Universal Cuff or a Silicone EazyHold cuff? Thank you.
Hi! Can you help me? I've seen that some drummers as Mike Portnoy or Lars ulrich for example, grips the stick really really above from that point that you say, why do they do that? And... is it useless? Thank you.
ToxiaDrums balance point is different on each stick. plus, I wouldn't model technique off of Lars, he looks out off breath playing a simple beat. Portnoy, yes
Been drumming for 15 years or so and this one has been the most useful class of them all. this is key to anything else
1:44 Rebound
2:05 Fulcrum
2:30 Freely bounce
5:05 Double stroke
6:10 Buzz

I do have to say that this is one of the best tutorials I have seen on the internet.
I wish I had watched this when I first started, you explained the double stroke perfectly.
Thank you for explaining. I will be watching the rest of your videos. I played woodwinds since 4th grade. Now, 30 years later I want to learn to play percussion. I appreciate the lessons!
black sticks, black background and black t shirt. How am I supposed to see the sticks!
lol, wtf? whta has his comment to do with racism? Only because he uses the word "black"?
i wouldn't consider myself as "triggered", i just don't get your comment
Fraser Poole 6
You just have to believe in Gadd.
The stick is a bit white
thank you for this :) im a beginner drummer thats very interested in learning the drums
Clear explanation of how to find the fulcrum point, this is by far the best video on the matter.
7:00 I've developed a great relationship with one of my sticks, but I'm not into the idea of playing with two.
at least you wrote sticks and not stick's
sticks’
sticks’s
I am going to watch your videos 👏🏻 I had my first drum lesson today. You showed me more in 7 min then he did in an hour 😂
I bein playing since I was 3, never knew this I’m about to be 31 in 2 months....I’m about to watch all yo videos bud thanks
Wow thank you so much for this, I cannot believe how hard it is to find a beginners stick technique video. Pages of results for “new drummers learn this sick beat to RAWK” but I’m like “Uhhm know how to hold the sticks, sorry”
This video is awesom! I've watched dozens of videos but this one showed me some key techniques those others didn't. I'm subscribing.

thanks... was surprised to see this was uploaded 14 years ago!
Nice job. I don't know the first thing about drumming but your demo was very clear and explained a lot. Awesome!
Thanks a lot for this awesome easy to understand lesson !!!!
Finally I found a video that is giving great instructions on how to hold drum sticks! But it is quite hard to see the sticks with a black background and black shirt.
Awesome instructional video. Thank you for making and posting this video. Very detailed.
6 people broke their fingers.
I think they hold it tightly.
This was so informative. I learnt a lot from this.
All the +10yrs tutorials are the best
You have just earned yourself a new subscriber!!
Great video. Straight to the point with just enough explanation.
Thank you Ross, I recently bought in a kinda yard sale a pair of drum sticks..zero technique, so let`s see what I`m into.. 😊
Does this man have a body?
Omfg this is why I’ve been having such a hard time, feels like a Harry finding his wand moment here.
im a junior in highschool wanting to start playing drums and i want something i can practice on for just the basics like this that wont make too much noise at night in my house whats something i can get to practice on that will help with technique but isnt gonna piss everyone in my house off?
I enjoy drums. :)

I got the cheapest ones I could and don’t have any markings there oops
Thanks for the video, mate. Ta!
thank you for the practices at the end
I NEED THAT PRACTICE POAD! where can I get one?
i signed in just to say thanks.
very helpfull
sorry to say, but there are a few things that arent quite right, dont hate me on this, and correct me if needed but.

does this wierd twitch, which means that when you would do it faster, you wont have the same result, or reaction from the stick. and you can hurt yourself in the process. or is that completely, completely the wrong end of the stick? (lol)
Just how I would have taught it...Great Job.

when i try to do doubles, my hand keeps on doing more because of the dribble effect. How do I stop it?
So fun fact time! On Vic Firth sticks, put your thumb over the flag for a solid starting point for where your fulcrum is. YW all xD
Nathanial Holmes really? Lemme try wuick
Nathanial Holmes damn.... that's cool
@Crag yep they did that on purpose lol
Daaamn nice
excellent video my man
Great video!
so does your thumb touch your index or does it stay on top of the stick to help it push down?
My pointer finger swells up when I play drums is their anything I’m doing wrong
Nico Laso it depends on what you mean by ”swells up”. Where does it swells up, and how?
I keep dropping my sticks. It keeps sliding off the fulcrum and I don't see it
great lesson, thanks
Do you lift it up or let it bounce because when I let it bounce it doesn't bounce very high when I do my rebound stroke
Wow, that was awesome. I actually sound like I'm on my way. Thanks

I always held my vic firths by the flag cuz it felt right, I didn't know it had a reason. This was very interesting :)

@zimgir5000 Why would you say that?

keep it up
How long is dtdck drugs
Good tips... floating head
Cool 😇
double strokes is far from what you would teach in the first lesson when the person just barely "learned" to hold the sticks.
i know but im 5 years late
