- Chicago guitarist, songwriter and street performer know as Slim Freedom moves the TEDxChicago audience as she performs a soulful cover of Steve Nick's classic "Landslide." Ashley Stevenson, known also as Slim Freedom, is a singer songwriter, guitarist and street performer based in Chicago.
For years she has displayed her talent in the subways of Chicago to support herself. Recently her performances have gotten the attention of RUclipsrs who’ve filmed her songs in “The Tunnels” as Ashley refers to them. Many of these videos have reached tens of thousands of views and her cover of Landslide received more than 8 millions views since its release a year ago. Slim Freedom is now joined by a team to help spread her message even wider this upcoming year. She looks to release a series of professional recordings of her covers and past originals as she prepares her debut album. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
THAT ONE SUBWAY VIDEO BROUGHT ME HERE
yup, me too!
Same.
Me me me
Me too. Love it
Don't get me wrong both videos are amazing but for some reason I love the subway version more!
*She sounds great here but I think she sounds SOOOOO much better in the subway video with her voice resonating and slightly echoing off the walls...*
It does sound different, check out her channel ' Slim Freedom! A proper video n recording too 👍 still natural awesome Talent eh!
@@MARYANNE269
Just subbed. Thanks for the info! God bless you.
I like both
Needs a little verb and presence in the vox mix. Still sounds great this raw.
I think its because in the subway she's actually shouting it out with all her heart. Not the beat for a microphone being up close. Still has a great soul to it tho
The person who filmed her subway performance and filmed her “performer ID” allowed me to find more of this wonderful artists work
The guy who filmed her subway performance is a selfish person. Ashley explained in one of her vids that the guy profited from the video and she never saw a cent of it.
@@eden20111 Still not so selfish filming her id and gave her the possibility to this;). Besides he cant perform like this, he only can film. She can have a career. look at the positive side.
50/50 would be fair
Lil Eddy I head what you’re saying. You can also argue had he not filmed her, she may not have been where is today thanks to that video going viral
True and those who mentioned her name in the comment section.
She reminds me of Tracy Chapman she has talent
Exactly!
Tina tickaram
dope her name is Ashley Stevenson read the description. Ignore Michael grace I think he was making a joke.
This is the same what I m thinking
Yesssss
PLEASE SUPPORT HER MUSIC. SHE RELEASED AN AMAZING ALBUM LAST YEAR CALLED FREEDOM AND A SINGLE THIS YEAR CALLED THE SPARROW. I DISCOVERED HER FROM HER LANDSLIDE VIDEO YESTERDAY AND HAD NO CLUE SHE HAD AN ALBUM.....I WAS TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY.
She doesn't look as comfortable as she is at the train station 😂 still absolutely amazing
*I made this 3 years ago and y’all are still interacting
Katy k it's not that I think that on the subway when she sang this song something was going on I'm her personal life which made her sing it like an angel gods emotions.
M. Öckthem I also think she was rushed and not abel to really feel comfortable there energy she was abel to feel it
Katy k i think its just the echo from the station she likes , more her style than mics i suppose
that doesnt sound right at all
@@xxxtentaclesz7555 what about ALCOHOL?
She deserves more recognition, she’s sooooooooo talented
TheDongbals did you ever consider mabey some people just play to play and dont do it for the fame...
iBang Urmom i know, if she doesn’t want the fame then that’s good for her I’m just saying talent like that can actually go somewhere like on a global scale but that’s just what I think
Ofcourse she plays "just to play" as well. I think there are plenty of bands and high paid gigs that would love her in their team really. Or artist organisations that function as agency. For the most people being free and earn just enough money in order to survive at least is all they want. Money is important at some extend but not the most important thing in life for many people if it means to give up freedom and a certain way of living probably.
TheDongbals Thanks for being so respectful to my big cousin! We love all of you!!
Is she signed yet? If not, that's nuts. She is so f***ing talented.
Alex James Morris its deeper than money and a ‘deal’...
CGBalla1014 this.
CGBalla1014 yeah but don’t you want someone as talented as her to be successful and share her amazing talent with the world instead of having to busk in the subway?
Dana K depends on what you consider to be “successful”... maybe she likes busking / playing to passerby’s. Lots of artists are not given the freedom to have complete artistic control, to where the magic that can happen everyday in a subway, will be watered down to be digestible by the mass consumer culture... I’m just saying that I don’t live in Chicago, yet I’ve seen what she can do and can feel how real it is
Great things come to those who wait. You should never settle for less.
I’ve seen her play in the subway like 20 times!!!! What a small world.
You never know what you’ll find in the Chicago Blue Line!!
Lucky u would love to see her live
I wish her all the success in the world 🌎
She is brilliant! She takes this song and makes it her own, as she does with every song she covers. Ashley also writes her own songs, she has an unbelievable talent! LOVE HER!
Spot on!!! I have just this minute (by accident) watched a subway video of Ashley doing this great song and then of this video
I first saw her on You Tube about a year ago, and was amazed. If you want to see more videos of her I suggest subscribing to Zac Alleywalker Lowing. He has many of her and other subway performers from Chicago. She is my favorite, by far!
May Newman this.
Is TEDx a valium convention, because the audience looks as though they have overdosed.
The crowd drank too much herbal tea.
Lmfaooooo
how is nobody in the crowd crying? i shed tears every time i hear her do this song. its so damn beautiful
Right? This crowd is so dull. How is it even possible?
STYCH MUSIC OMG THANKS FOR SUPPORTING MY OLDER COUSIN ASH LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!
I understand you !!
Good, I'm not the only only.
M not crying, you're crying *sniff*
Music today needs people like this lady... we have lost the raw emotion and soul touching imperfections someone’s voice can carry. Everything is so auto-tuned and fake anymore that there isn’t any of that grit and emotional journey someone’s voice can take you on. We should Relish in imperfection and push for people having their own personal identity with their voice... instead we get a constant stream of perfectly molded little money making robots, with zero passion and connection to their songs.
This 1000%
You’re so right, that’s why my playlist is filled with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and so many other greats. So much emotion that’s missing today
Amen
Nailed it!
When i heard her voice break, my soul broke
Wrong audience
No kidding.
How true...
No they where just listening
this makes no sense, but alright then.
Definitely , i kept rewinding looking for some appreciation
She has the uncanny ability to make you feel emotional with her voice..
This is my all time favorite song and she performed it magnificently. My soul hasn’t been this properly fed in a very long time and I will be well nourished for days.
worst crowd ever, i bet the majority of that crowd never talk when eating dinner
lmao (;^∀;^)
This isn't an event you talk during. You go to learn and observe. They're not supposed to be standing up and yelling. Its just not the environment for it. If you know about TedX
Cain Bradley wtf lol
It's an acoustic show.....
It's a TEDX audience not a concert
What a complex interpretation of a great song. I've been trying to copy her on guitar. The original is straight forward. Her version requires skills I simply don't have. She can pick and strum VERY FAST! Plus, she plays the whole piece without bending her wrist. We are witnessing greatness.
Larry Lee do you know what the chords are
I too would like to know the chords. The camera work on all the videos I have seen of her singing landslide make it difficult to decipher what she is doing with her left hand. She has developed a very unique style of strumming, lots of rhythmic rushes and pausing--almost flamenco-like, but her own. Definitely worth studying.
Sam-baji I have the chords do you want them :))
C c/b Am c/b
Sure! Please share. Are they the ones Slim is playing?
What a beautiful voice so raw and stylishly unique.
This is probably the most organic way i have discovered an artist: Saw a random video of her performing in a subway, saw her name in the comments section and here we are. I am so sure she is going to be huge!! Blessings.
Let me introduce you to Annabella Lwin of British band Bow Wow Wow
Sounds even better in a subway station.
THAT ONE SUBWAY VIDEO BROUGHT ME HERE
I would've freaking stand up and clapped so hard that my fingers fell off
Shamanic. This kind of deep talent makes me weep.
You know what I’m so sick of uncultured swines. When they panned out to the audience I had to pause and look at their faces like what am I looking at?!?! She did amazing.
I would've freaking stand up and clapped so hard that my fingers fell off
I fuckin love her voice is different with so much soul
I heard they handed out a new trial version of ambien before this ted event
Matthew Bousson lmao no kidding
That's hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
She brings out a cry that is meant to be freed, from deep place within us. Just for a moment of release and a new beginning. That's real human healing.
What so beautiful about Ashley's covers is the uniqueness of each one. No two are the same! That's talent!!!
yeah 100%
Why is she not famous , her voice is one of a kind
what we are witnessing is a STAR right before our eyes..her video went viraal this is awesome!
She's got soul.
They clap but they didn't really take in the greatness of her talent this crowd looks like a bunch of zombies when they went around the room.
Thats how you tell a great musician apart, audience is in awe. This performance is powerful to say the least!
Jason Robinson
nope this audience had no clue what they had in front of them and they took her for granted but gave her a fake reaction clap in the end she is a great artist and a true audience that is in awe would give a standing ovation
Agreed, but the 1st time I saw this I looked just like each member of the audience. . Speechless
Jason Robinson
this video was amazing but if you watch her perform it here live at the train station the show is even more intense its here on youtube as well if you would like to see
Id travel across the world to witness this live!
Sounds even better in a subway station.
reminiscent of tracy chapman
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?\
You deserve the world Ashley Stevenson! Love you man keep doing your own style its insane (in a good way).
In tears... I feel like she's calling out to me.
Ebby C she is. She’s calling out to the human in all of us. Not the persona we put on
Ebby C I understand. I feel the exact same way
Ebby C I didn't her her say Ebby, even once.
I hear and feel the same....
@@CGBalla1014 👌
The world needs more of this realness of heart, it seems so rare to me
Her voice is hauntingly beautiful.
She deserves MORE fame than ALL the people combined who've been on the radio in the past 5 years.
Oh my god I have never heard something so magnificent.
Andrew Gervais Now I wish Stevie Nicks would write for her.
Andrew Gervais I feel the same way. I get teary eyed when I hear her
The original version in the subway station is better. So raw and perfect.
Her voice touches my heart!!!! Wow
Is shes on the Ellen show already or not?
? Don't know?? Good question.check out her channel 'Slim Freedom' though 👍
She’s got that Richie havens right hand. 👍🏻 So good.
touching...she could be singing the phonebool. It she who touches. Her soul. God bless here for sharing sheself. LOVE
People are sat in silence as they look gripped and focused. It's respect.
Maybe Ted cut the applause out or she played a longer set?
I sat in silence.
I wanted to hear every tone. Every peak and every dip.
She has a soul healing voice
*Sedate* midwestern academic/intellectual audience. One man of European descent, in the back, is giving Ashley Stevenson the *standing ovation* She *deserves,* and three women and one man of African descent are *full-cheshire beaming* while clapping -- out of the *entire audience...*
I just watched her video the other day. God Bless from Philippines!
Naif Sayyaf I'm from Chicago so i am fortunate to see her play live in our CTA Subways. I have a friend in the Philippines!
jose. I am so jealous you are in chicago.
thinking of getting on the plane to chicago and hang out in the subways in chicago
Her voice touches the soul because it's beautiful, and completely real. She doesn't sound produced, she sounds real.
She is a light that pushes away the dark
Whoever gave her a cardioid dynamic mic for this performance did her a serious disservice, should have been a proper condenser mic...
Acoustics are better in the subway and she seems more comfortable in the subway world.
I watch this a few times a week
just unbelievable, lost my faith, but i can feel something real in her
Audience doesn’t deserve her. Their luck. She’s so amazing. Much love Ashley
I really wish she would make a RUclips and sing, release an album, she needs to be heard!!!! Her voice is full of emotion and she is so incredibly talented.
I always appreciate covers like this more than a direct copy (athough when done well, those can be excellent as well). A cover that can completely transform the melody and tone of a song while still being recognizable as the original is a truly special thing (ie, Johnny Cash's Hurt cover)
I feel as if she was more comfortable & unfiltered in the subway. Not saying her performance was anything but beautiful!
first line she song, I melted. so beautiful. this song really gets to me when she sings it.
Joe Griggs Jr. Absolutely agree and sung
That audience should be ashamed of themselves. Love Slim
This girl is unbelievable. So so good.
I watched her Subway video and I cried... now I watched this video and I cried. her voice is unbelievable.
That crowd dry af lol well done, Ashley, your fans love you 😍❤️
far less talented people than this has made it big.
She picking them strings...... Talented artists are rare now days.
Fell in love with her live. Loved her YT. Love her now. Will always love this voice.
oh hay Tracy Chapman
man, what a voice.
VicerExciser88 way more range depth and tonality.
😒
I thought the same thing but yeah more depth and range
I've been afraid of changing, because I've built my life around you...but children get older...but I'm getting older too.... You go, Slim!
Ashley please release an album. All these views could be dollars instead. Everytime someone streams or downloads your songs.
Anyone know the tuning and the chords she’s using?
I watched her performance of this song in the subway with yellow hoody quite a while ago now... and instantly knew she was pure talent. I'm so glad it's paying off.
I think the crowed loved her. They seemed relaxed or pensive. She is a very emotional singer and I think the audience was almost in a trance and perhaps feeling their own emotions thanks to Ashley. I say this because I found myself mesmerized by her singing so I probably would have looked zombie-like as well. Such a touching voice.
I didnt think i would like this performance as much as in the station but i LOVE both the clarity of her voice here matches the rawness in the subway . So much talent i would've appreciated being in this audience
That crowd is pitiful wtf...she is absolutely amazing.. Love her
This is no longer fleetwood macs song this is hers lol.
Brilliantly done! Amazing talent, I’m so glad her talent is getting out to the world.. soar on slim
landslide brought me down......
So many Karen's in that audience shot.
Stevie Nick's should sing with her blessings to you ❤️ beautiful one love...
They look like zombies and the old Asian people always look disappointed or unamused. She took this song and made it into something else. She’s not just a singer she’s an artist.
She pulling them strings tho 🔥🔥
that very end of the vocals tho. so rad
12 sting anybody? Props 👍
Shes definitely giving off some Richie Havens vibes.
People fail to realize that this is as pure as music gets. Those saying she doesn't sound good, your favorite artist probably uses auto tune.
I love her style.. it's raw, and what music is supposed to be, all heart
I think her energy was better when she was performing in the subway, which made her delivery stronger.
And in this place... she could be a little nervous. But she's still very talented :)
One of the greatest voices ive heard in awhile
Wait, do you hear that? Me neither. Refreshing. No auto-tune. Amazing how it seems to come so natural for her.
I’m not crying
Your’e crying
When I heard her the first time? Like a true blues singer. Nothing but raw emotion. I WANT to learn to be as good as her one day.
Who ever liked my comment?
Thank you. I appreciate it especially as it's about a subject I have a passion for music and learning it.
Have a good day and remember it's only rock and roll - but I like it :)
Better than original. Crazy
Her performance here is different to the famous one she did on the subway because in this video she’s not in her safe space and there’s a level of expectation.
she deserves a better audience
That bit at around 1:56 gave me goosebumps
Omg please give me a new audience
New Tracy Chapman?? 😶
Alex Price I do hear that but I’d love to hear more originals because TC is an unreal songwriter. That being said her rasp and soulfulness is unparalleled even by Chapman herself I think, but what if the two came together now that would be awesome.
wot a voice, wish she was from UK England she has bags and bags of talent. recording voice straight up.
Her voice is so unique and beautiful damn
