Awesome video tom keep them coming
Justin Vincent thanks buddy!
Great video series. Fun to to watch great dialogue.
Thank you!
These TTRs are a nice bike. I have been considering TTR over a pit bike for back yard antics. 😎
They seem to be pretty good bikes, this one just took a bit too much abuse. The parts are reasonably priced, too bad the entire engine has to be split to get to them!
The side where the dipstick is where i have to take mine apart, i broke a screw and it got stuck inside, as well as it leaks oil so im pretty sure its the gasket that needs to be changed
Tito Gaming hopefully it all goes well, good luck.
Hey Tom, GREAT video....EXTREMELY helpful with my own ttr125. Just wanted to know if that ball bearing for the clutch actuating arm can fall out at any time or you would have to remove something to release it?
That bearing should just come out . Been known to lose those a few times!
Hi Tom,
Awesome vids so far and can I ask where on line do you get your manual's from please.
I usually just do a Google search. Sometimes you can find a free one, sometimes you have to pay a couple bucks.
Awesome vid. Where did you find the schematics? Thanks!
Thanks, I don’t remember where but I usually search online with good results.
I’m thinking about doing a bottom end rebuild on my 06 ttr 125 that’s all stock aside from the clutch.Never done something like this but I know I can get it done. My main concern is I’m having trouble finding bottom end parts. Are universal parts okay for this job like the bearings or do I need to find manufacture specific parts? From what I’ve seen I can’t find any kits or anything really for my year ttr that isn’t sold separately or made by a 3rd party company and I’m not sure about the quality of Chinese parts especially engine bearings. Any advice or suggestions on what you would do?
I would buy Yamaha parts. Lots of great places to order them online or through the dealership.
i have the same bike, its shifting all the gears good but when the engine off when i want to shift 1 to 0 or the or the opposite, its little bit hard then i just pushing the bike forward and trying to shift quicker its done. What can be the reasons for that. Nice video by the way
ametcho that’s a kind of common issue. Check the clutch basket for notches on the “arms”. I have also heard that lightly sanding the thrust washer for clearance helps. Thanks for watching.
Hi! I found a crack on my left crankcase which was causing oil to leak out like crazy and I'm wondering if I have to disassemble everything on the right side too to replace it or can I simply remove the left side and replace that. Thanks :)
Niklas Anastasiy you’re going to have to remove the entire top end for sure. Actually, the cases are manufactured and machined as a pair. You’re not supposed to replace only one half. You may be able to get the crack welded? Good luck, thanks for watching.
That primary gear just magically slid right off after you took the nut off?
I’m no magician, but it did come off with no tricks.
Haven't cracked mine open yet waiting for clutch pliers you used but just wanted to pick your brain a bit. I had the bike running and adjusting the carb when I kept hearing tapping like a screw driver hitting the top end and quickly went to hit kill button but bike seized. No loud noise, nothing just shut off like when I use the kill button. Do you have any ideas of what would normally need replacing in a seized engine? Everything so far looks pretty good (piston, top end, cam chain, flywheel, clutch side, etc) just wanna know what to look for when I crack it open. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep the vids coming.
If everything topside looks good you may have seized the crankshaft. That’s unfortunate , bigger expenses. No way to tell until you get it all tore down. Hoping for good news for you!
Thanks for the info. Got her cracked open but before that when it was still together but flywheel, clutch basket and everything was out these 2 small metal dowels were on the floor and bike lift. Would you happen to know what/where they are from? Thanks again for all your help.
@@tydavis27 could be the alignment dowels for the cylinder or the head. Also there are alignment dowels on the side covers.
Sorry forgot to specify that they are REALLY small about half an inch long solid and shiny like they were somewhere inside of something. They are definitely not the pin dowels for the engine case or top end. Wish I can post pic....smh.
Where did u get bottom end rebuild kit for it?
Yamaha OEM is the only stuff I know of for this engine.
Hi Tom, Around the 15:00 mark, you found a washer behind the oil pump drive gear on the crankshaft. I'm working on an '01 engine and about to work on a '13 engine. Didn't find that washer on the '01 and don't see on the parts diagram for the '13. What year and model is that engine you worked on? I've watched most of the series, but didn't catch that tidbit of info. The '01 had a hack working on it before I bought it, just want to make sure it wasn't lost... the clutch ball bearing was not there. Thanks!
Oh, I am not sure what year it was. Definitely older than 2013, but I can’t remember. I will look at the manual and see if I can find out about the washer.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures No sweat, thanks. I'll dig a little and see if I can find a year with that washer, have plenty of parts diagrams and I haven't even looked at the manuals yet. You've done your work with the video, don't be researching for watchers, thery can do it... Cheers!
@@sasqui2001 best of luck getting it back together, have a great day!
How did you remove that 17mm cam sprocket bolt? If I attempt to loosen it the cam sprocket just turns with it. Is there a method to hold the crankshaft stable?
You can put a breaker bar and socket on the flywheel nut .
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures Thanks Tom! and thanks for the great videos! Repairing my TTR with your help.
@@Grape_Sucker I hope that everything works great for you .
Hey Tom I'm doing the same thing almost right now
Good luck
Thanks but mine is a 125L
If I got any questions about it I'll definitely come to you first
@@maxlukey3731 125 and 125L are almost exactly the same
Yea but I got a cheap Amazon one Hope it'll work
Its the black wahser that bent
Yeah, you should be able to flatten it out.
Hi Amman trying to find the pdf for the service manual can you give me a link please thanks
Tim Stoyanov I got a download, no link....sorry
Tom's Tinkering and Adventures how much was the download
And where did you find the download
Tim Stoyanov I don’t remember, Google is your friend.
how did you get the stater cover viewing windows off?
@@HedleyWilson usually need to have a very large screwdriver, sometimes you can use a flat end of another tool like a removal tool for an angle grinder or something like that.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures okay thanks mate thats what i started doing but mine are really tight so might just need to try harder
@@HedleyWilson they do tend to be difficult to remove and if I remember correctly these are plastic. You can try just a little bit of heat on them first, not a flame but more like a hair dryer. I have had to destroy a couple over the years to get them off! Fortunately they are not expensive to replace.
can i use a cheap chinese top end and if i do it correctly it should be reliable am i corrct
can i also use 10w30 on my ttr125
You can use whatever top end or oil that you like, I cannot guarantee that it will work as good as what the manufacturer recommends. I have had fair luck using aftermarket top end kits and using different oils.
did you get urs off amazon?
@@maxlukey3731 this was a bike I was working on for a buddy, he got the parts online somewhere...not positive where.
How do i remove the thing holding on the bolt on the clutch
I’m not certain what part you mean, maybe the locking tab?
Yeah the locking tab
The only screw holding it on, i cant get the locking tab off of it in order to take the bolt off
@@thestreetandoffmotovlogs828 usually I use a screwdriver or a punch and hammer to get the lock tab off the nut
Ive tried a screw driver and hiting it with a hammer but still couldn’t get if off
Hey tom you wanted me to keep you in with my top end rebuild I've been wait for some parts for a while just got them but I think I may of messed up the timing but not sure until its put back together
Check the timing several times before trying to start the bike. If you’re not sure, bring a buddy over to take a second look.
Do you have to worry about both timing if you just do the topend
@@maxlukey3731 if you have removed the cam, then you have to set the timing. Very critical, otherwise you can cause engine damage.
Ok I just removed the cam cover not the cam I'm not messing with it just the piston
@@maxlukey3731 you can’t get to the piston without removing the cylinder head and the cam
What's the name of the specialty toll?
Tool
@@smegmaman1355 what part of the video?

@@smegmaman1355 thanks, you can search “motorcycle clutch holding tool” and you will find plenty to choose from.
Thank u so much 🤗
hi bro, could send me the manual?? I have the same engine and my piston blow up, so I need to open the engine like you are doing!! great video btw, if you could send me the manual I would be great full!!!
I can leave here my email!
Zeca Gomes glad you liked the video butI’m sorry, can’t send it because it’s copyrighted. If you search online you may find one.
@@TomsTinkeringandAdventures ohh ok, its fine, I´ll try once more, thank you by the time!! I´m just keep going on your videos. to help me out!!
Zeca Gomes hopefully the videos help and you get it done!
I have to open it beacause there are piston particles that can damage the crankshaft
hey tom i have a question
do you have to line up everything if you are only removeing the top end for the piston
@@maxlukey3731 you are definitely going to need to get the timing all lined up
i thought so
do i have to open up the bottom part to?
@@maxlukey3731 not if you’re just doing the piston. Timing is absolutely crucial though. Check it several times!
