The cross at the end actually exists. It's a memorial for the Christmas truce. It was built in 1999 for the 85th anniversary.

If you wondered what kind of conversations happened during this... It started with "Hey, this war sucks, right?" In most places. The ordinary people had to fight for their leaders visions and had to pay the price. No one wanted WWI. They were told the war wouldn't even last till christmas. Here they were, having orders to not seize fire on christmas eve, and they still did and disobeyed orders. Not everywhere, but in many places - mostly at the german - englisch fronts. The french were too bitter at this point in time, but there are some french fronts that also seized fire. They quickly learned that they all were told lies, and that they were fightning ordinary people, like their brothers and sons on the other side.
The truce actually lasted for more than a day in many places. Even weeks were possible. Troops had to be shifted between fronts to continue fighting, because no one wanted to fight the friends they made. One of the very few victories of humanity during war.
I'm german, and my great-grandfather told me stories about the truce every time I saw him. May he rest in piece.

I’m grateful for them and their great songs and storytelling. They honor our heroes and they tell the history of all Nations in an impactful and very entertaining way. 🤘🏻👍🏻

In France, the conscription was for men between 18 and 45 years old. But young men of 16 or 15 did went to war too

The Christmas truce was such a beautiful moment of human decency overcoming the hell on earth that is war. I always tear up reading about it. I admit I cried a lot while listening to this song for the first time. It reminds me of my family. I had ancestors shooting at each other in WWI. It’s always fascinated me because of this.
I’ve seen people say sabaton glorifies war, they’ve clearly never heard this song
Out of all the songs Ive heard from Sabaton I have not once heard them glorify war. Its wild that people say that.
There's a detail that strikes me during that exciting buildup ("...we sing the Holy night, our guns rest...") - it invokes a childish feeling of eagerly anticipating the time to unwrap your Christmas presents (like when you could barely wait for it), which is extra heartbreaking considering the average age of the frontline soldier (some were barely grown-up men).
Oh damn now that you mention that I fully can feel that oh wow that adds a whole nother dimension to the song!
Actually (regarding the age of the soldiers), by the Christmas Truce of 1914, the armies on the front were rapidly running out of their first class of conscripts, who were about 18 to 21. They were being forced to send the older classes (from the 21 to 25, up to the 35 to 45 age brackets, usually reserved for 2nd and rear-line duties) to the front to reinforce severely depleted divisions. This was especially true for the French Army which suffered horribly during the Battle of the Frontiers. So the ages shown in the video are somewhat accurate.
The British, being a volunteer army at the time, had the same issues, but compounded by the lack of any trained replacements. Where the French had their conscription system to ensure that everyone from 18 and up was at least minimally trained pre-war (though in obsolete doctrines at that point), the British were having to crash train the (frankly surprisingly) enormous amount of recruits garnered by the recruitment campaign organized by Lord Kitchener. In the meantime, they were exhausting and depleting their professionally trained forces. By Spring 1915, when Kitchener's Army arrived in France, little remained of the pre-War British Army in Europe. Incidentally, conscription only became a thing for the British in 1916, IIRC, as by then the staggering number of losses dampened and extinguished the initial enthusiasm and adventuring spirit for the War amongst the youth.
Hell, during the Great War, the only Army where the average age was 18 to 21 by 1918 was the American Army. Everyone else had lost that age bracket by 1916 at the latest.
That's why those Wars shattered the West's resolve and willingness for War. Our whole societies were exposed to the horrors of it. Our grandparents and great-grandparents saw the shattered bodies and minds of the survivors, saw the emptiness left by the missing, felt the grief for those who never came home. We still live with those scars, deep within the common psyche of the Western world.

The singer Joakim is the piano player and Hannes is the one walking up from the trenches and initiating the truce. The music video has better story telling and has more historical accuracy than most movies. Everyone involved did such an awesome job! Thanks for playing the credits, it shows respect to the people involved and it is still part of the song. And Floor is an amazing singer.
This song really punches you in the gut, lets you get back up again during the solo and punches you in the gut again and with the video that goes with it, it's hard to hold your tears back.

This is the best Sabaton and Christmas song I've ever heard. I'm so obsessed with it! Got into Sabaton thanks to Dan Vasc and his Sabaton covers. Check him out, if you haven't already, and start with The Last Stand and then just explore. He does Nightwish, Manowar, Petra, Queen, Iron Maiden, Dio, Helloween, Journey, even opera - Nessun Dorma is absolutely EPIC! He also does Witcher covers and original music with his band Fearless. Without him, I wouldn't be typing this right now. Great reaction!

The soldiers of the Christmas truce found out, that they actually had more in common with the poor bastard in the other trench, than with their own generals!
In the Christmas of 1915, the generals couldn't have that! So there was no repeat of the 1914 Christmas truce on this large scale, as the artillery kept firing ... Some DID come out of their trenches, but was mostly instantly killed by the enemy soldiers. No moment of peace in a war that'll never end ... Until 11 o'clock, 11th of November, 1918 ... War to end all wars, indeed ...

This was the first single released from their upcoming album "The War To End All Wars' if the rest of the songs on the album are even half as good as this one it will easily be one of their best. this song easily made its way into my top five favorite songs by them.

I'm an enlisted private of the Republic of Singapore Air Force and I can vouch for the feels. The only thing every one of my military collegues wanted was going home during working hours. I can't even imagine the people in the operations.
I probably won't given my overall fitness. The only thing I wish for is just for no conflict to happen. I just want all men to come collectively and pragmatically to a peace where everyone has no reason for war.

I haven't read all the comments, but just wanted to add that the singer in the end when the credits are rolling, is Floor Jansen from Nightwish. And as you most likely have been told a couple of times, Floor is married to Hannes from Sabaton (The Drummer).
Someone mentioned (I think is was the raector Tankthetech) that there was 93 people making this video all from sound, extras, makeup artist etc. etc.). It was made in the czech republic if I remember correct.

I know I am like 2 years late to the party but damn. The song still hits hard to this day. To simply imagine that this happened in the middle of the (at the time) most senseless horror ever committed in mainland europe. The people who had been enemies for weeks. With their leaders having constantly demonized the enemy from the start. They've killed each other's friends. And yet. AND YET. They stubornly clung to their humanity to just stop and come together on christmas. For perhaps the only time in modern war where enemies just stopped being enemies for just a little. Grasping at the last straws of a normal moment.
To let the other side collect and bury the dead. To even swap gifts and just play foot ball. Many of these young men weren't even above 25, a lot lied about their age to join up. And most of them would not live to see the following 48 hours through.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of Sabaton or assumes about them and what they believe. They're doing something most people are not: they make us remember the very uncomfortable truth about where we are now in life. It was paid for in the blood, suffering, and lives of young men. A lot of it. We as a people should... Never. Forget. That.

The accoustic guitar is for the sake of historical accuracy - they did not have their Fenders and such in 1914. On a side note, Tank the Tech mentioned in his comment to the same video that this accoustic piece of gear is likely something you would find in 1914 in Europe, so this is a relevant piece of music equipment.
Taking into account Sabaton are rather careful about historical accuracy of their videos, the only thing that seems out of place is their long hair and facial hair.

This truce wasn't authorized by the military command on both sides but happend spontaneously. The German soldiers began by singing, most likely, Silent Night and later many soldiers on both sides refused to keep fighting and were executed.
As an Aussie you should check out “Cliffs of Gallipoli” 😢
Oh that is more emotional for Aussie's, There is the Anzac day and Australians even make pilgrimage to Turkey.

The following day, British,French and German soldiers met in no man's land and exchanged gifts, took photographs and some played impromptu games of football. They also buried casualties and repaired trenches and dugouts.
The truce lasted for two days.
When their superiors found out,they sent some soldiers away to other places,some ran to not have to fight any longer.The rest were shot right there and then for refusing orders to fight against those they had made friends with.

The reason they erect the cross in the video, with the inscription "christmas truce 1914" on it is because the soldiers who took part in the truce mostly refused to resume fighting after having made friends with "the enemy".. so their commanders relocated them and banned any further christmas truces to take place, even though soldiers tried again in 1915 (but weren't successful).
So they are essentially paying homage to soldiers on the battlefield setting aside the conflict they're pawns in to unite over their common humanity, and Sabaton are then also saying RIP christmas truce, the last large scale act in a war theater to recognize that we are all ultimately, as they sing in this song, brothers.

@@JoJoLewis No problem! They’re good songs. The Final Solution is a tear-wrencher through and through. The End of the War to End All Wars has parts like that, but it’s also a banger. Lots of cool instrumental parts make it probably their most mystically interesting song.

@@JoJoLewis The song certainly does capture the futile nature of the campaign and includes some of Attaturks words in the lyrics. Seems kind of cliche or over the top to say but I think every Aussie and Kiwi who wants to learn history should hear it.
