I believe it was in the 80’s, nasa launched a satellite made of different materials to see how the space environment deteriorates different materials. After 5 years, delayed after challenger crash?, satellites retrieved. Amazing pictures as what space does to materials let alone electronics
I have Starlink in the Philippines. Did not notice any service problems. We are off grid and love Starlink.
🚀
Unaffected here in the Alaskan bush... Thom's Place.. Wrangell Island AK..,150 down... 4-8 up....my shortwave radio was just buzzing on all bands and freq's couldn't get anything!!!....love our Starlink...our connection to the outside world....cheers..enjoy your program!!! Cheers......Tim
I was checking for outages. I didn't see any outages out of the ordinary. Honestly, it was working better than I expected! This is a major win for starlink.
During the time I was getting the warning about degraded service, I got the best BEST speed test I ever got, 407 down, 16.7 up, 31ms latency. I'm in far west Texas using roam on gen 3. May 11, 2024, 7:29AM central.
I normally get >100MB/s @ 30ms latency. During the storms I got 17MB/s w/ 62ms latency. All considered, I was thrilled to still be able to see what was going on in the world. No complaints about Starlink here.
It was a G5 Extreme, the highest level for solar flare storms. My APC battery backups went haywire. I'm looking at EMP protection at the breaker so it insulates my battery backups. I've also been monitoring the NoAA site, it has decent graphs and projections.
@xlr555usa That's a good source. I also use a free program called Ham Clock, and a paid app called Carrington where I can set up alerts.
Trouble free in Colorado. I, too, got the degraded service message. Speed was off a little, but it was meaningless. TV, voice and computers ran fine.
There's two changes since the 38 that had been lost:
1) 2nd stage was doing single-burn. This imparted maximum energy which increased apogee, but kept perigee low. The new flight profile went back to having a second burn to raise perigee. This lessens atmospheric drag in early orbit.
2) The Gen 1.x satellites had one solar panel, which would act like a large rudder. This would make it impossible to turn the satellite (and therefore the thruster) to raise the satellite's altitude. The Gen 2 satellites have a pair of solar panels, so any drag would be symmetric, and not impede attitude control. And as you said, Gen 2 has more thrust-to-weight than V1, so does a better job climbing.
Every Starlink Satellite should have multiple Live Cameras showing what is seen all around .. that would be awesome to see storms , These awesome events , live footage as it passes over the land below .. etc
Hi, I found your youtube channel a week or so ago as I have just purchased my Gen 2 kit , but not yet installed it and was looking for information on Starlink. I really appreciate and admire the depth of your knowledge and thank you for sharing it with us. Keep up the great work. I'm already a fan of yours!!!
Blessings. Thank you for taking the time to write those kind words.
In Australia when the degraded message came in, an advanced speed in the app test saw speeds fall to 150 down, 20 up, 30ms ping......I vote for Elon to be our next PM, energy minister, and communications minister!
I was able to Eve Online with no issues.
Here in Colorado, at 9200 feet/ 2804m, I wasn't able to see the Aurora lights, due to all the cloud cover and snow falling :(
My Starlink rocked both the terrestrial weather and the massive space weather!
Being able to survive the solar storm also means they're more likely to survive emp attacks.
Thanks!
Dennis. Thank you so much for your kindness and support. Truly is appreciated.
Thanks for the great insight! I enjoy your videos.
Once in awhile our Star needs to make sure we don’t get so comfortable as to forget that humans have no control over space weather.
The minuscule potential of a distant Gamma Ray burst occurring is the space storm humanity never wants to experience 🙏
No known outages I have had here in Utah from that solar storm.
🚀
Flying on plane on autopilot especially in storms or during landing and takeoff better to switch off
Oh ya. But most landing are done through ILS for the BIG plane.
I only got 7mb. During this time in Spain
Ouch
Many thanks to you. That was so interresting as usaual. Hi from Brussels, BELGIUM.
Glad you enjoyed it
I DID get an error message in the Starlink app, but the whole thing stayed up and running full-speed the whole time - all weekend. NO OUTAGES at all!
When explaining knife-edge orientation you said "rotated 45 degrees" when in fact you rotated it 90 degrees. Good video overall. thank you
No doubt that I was worried about my service, and I certainly didn't monitor my speed or delay. But, I was happy that I never noticed a problem while streaming in one room and working on my computer in another. Super happy these guys and girls are on top of it. Maybe the next gen Voyager engineers!
I didn’t notice anything still getting the typical 150mb-350mb down 20-30mb up and 20-35ms here in Oklahoma
Sweet
I got the degraded on the app Friday but it didn’t seem like it messed with anything everything still worked great
Well that’s really good!!
Yeah, I saw the degrading screen on the Starlink app from Friday evening thru Saturday. Although, I didn't really notice the differences in speed. Automatically disabling the autopilot on the Tesla is probably necessary for the future software updates since it leads to safety issue.... With all that, I totally missed the Northern light🙄 I will pay attention to the next solar storm!!! Thanks for sharing.
I saw that notice too but we noticed no difference!
The transmitter could be indipendant of the way the solar cells point twards the sun. With the increase energy of the solar wind the cells could have enough power to run the sattlite with less degrading of the signal with only the electormagnitic interference cutting down the signal.
Great point.
Hey Joseph, did you experienced any degraded performance? Knife Edge maneuver, so cool. Thanks for finding what others don't talk about, or perhaps don't want to talk about because of their vested interests...
😂 thanks for that. Mine did a reboot and the service was a bit spotty. My ping for perfect but the web was not. Very strange. Like routing issues.
Someone probably already posted this regarding Tesla Autopilot. Autopilot is not Full Self Driving. Autopilot is mostly smart cruise control which you can optionally add lane retention function to if you want. It comes with the car at not extra cost. Full Self Driving is still a major optional cost or you can lease the service for $99 per month.
Performance dropped in Crete but didn't cause any issues. We had a few drop outs (under a minute) and the dish was at an odd angle for a bit. But all good, thank you Elon
Likewise.
No issues in New Mexico, just a hand full of logged momentary interruptions
Awesome!
I don't know but I'm watching you on starlink right now they must be doing something right.
👍🏻
That would've been awesome to see both the north and south solar storms at the same time
Solar panels rotate, so I guess the third "ace up my sleeve" was to just rotate the satellite and keep the solar panel pointing at the sun.
Thanks for this video. It confirms what I was thinking - that the solar storm is what is causing the download speeds for me dropping to an average of about 60mb. I am curious if you have seen a slowdown in the service. Also the 20 meter band on my ham radio is basically dead.
Cool beard, let it grow.
24hr download average for friday - 163.29mb/s - saturday - 155.00mb/s - sunday - 157.91mb/s - so no impact observed from the solar storm
I read the NZ Herald article, and felt that Chris Keall (the tech journalist) should have pointed out that it was GPS that was degraded, and nothing to do with Tesla. I regularly see errors of 10-20m on my iPhone tracking app when I hike through the steep gullies in the hills near my hometown. If degraded GPS during the weekend really was a significant thing for Tesla then they will also have received mountains of high quality data from their fleet around the world, so all Tesla owners can expect the issue to be fixed in their next OTA update - this is Tesla after all :)
My starlink connection was bad anyways, but it seems worse these days. I maybe have like an hour internet in total per day. Worthless, but then again, live near the arctic to begin with, with maybe 2 or 3 satelites orbiting overhead I cant expect much.
Ouch
Maybe the orientation of the knife edge is such that solar wind can be used to propel the satellite in the direction of travel like a sail boat on earth.
Ya here on south Texas i noticed how much lag and dropping in games and in discord chats.. a discord member told me about the solar storm..
I think starlink held up decently with the condition.. o will find put when I get home to pop in on discord and game on helldivers 2 and fortnite.
Thanks for the info!
My 10 year old twin cooled Samsung refrigerator controller board fried or has a glitch ... Starlink was unaffected
😂
I have Starlink. I had to watch most of my YT at 720p this weekend.
My STARLINK cost just jumped from $90 to $120 per month.
There it is.
I read about the knife edge defense for the satellites, here’s my question? What happens to the GEN four satellite dishes receiving their signal since they don’t move is this height adjustment going to affect their reception? Also, another thing to think about as the satellites reach the backside of the Earth the dark side if you will then do they flatten back out so would the interference not occur when it gets dark just would like to know thanks a lot appreciate your work
Good point. I better they alter orientation based on atmosphere.
I’m in the eastern part of Washington State and didn’t notice any issues.
Cheers for the update and a laugh re NZ Tesla owners.
Hey Joe another good site to look at for news in NZ and cross reference the NZ Herald is Stuff.
Well I'm off fishing now on this autumn foggy cool Tuesday morning out in the Firth of Thames, hopefully fresh snapper for dinner.
Yum!!!!!!😋
@@jcristina Yes snapper on, was a good morning indeed.
Had no problems where I am in Australia.
😎
Your idea is worth $$$$
Maybe they can through me a dollar or two. 😜
Does LEO help protect the satellites?
I never noticed any differences here in east central Wisconsin
Awesome.
I think we listened to at least a few of the same analyses of the previous solar storm that cost SpaceX several satellites before they even reached their assigned orbits. Your analysis of the current situation seems good to me, and I really like the idea that more powerful engines or additional fuel, or maybe both, have been added to newer Starlink satellites.
Of course, there is one other strategy SpaceX might be attempting in the current launch environment. Maybe they are deliberately avoiding flights into the teeth of the storm? Faster, stronger engines help a lot, but NOT BEING THERE probably helps, too. There's enough warning from NASA and other resources to pause a launch for a day or more. For that matter, SpaceX is nimble enough to push a launch a day or two sooner.
Great point.
Salient review as usual…keep up the good work! Has Space Force, or any other agencies reported damage/loss to other satellite systems? Maybe our “friends” with the CCP failed to copy Elon’s designs and their sats got smoked!
Theyve been shooting off rockets EVERY DAY for 2 wks.....strange
🚀🚀
My starlink in NZ is down since 30 minutes ago. DNS seems to work but TCP doesn't connect anywhere
Didn't cause any problems with my Starlink system in Northern California.
Nuce
Need to maintain earth connectivity and orbital laser link connectivity. This assumes the satellite is optimized for certain geometry usage.
👍🏻
I wonder if Starlink satellites are protected against EMP. May need it someday given Chinese and Russian potential actions.
Doubtful.
There is no wind in space. It’s in a vacuum
I wish you would provide the link to articles you are quoting. As you have stated, you are not an engineer, but for those of us who are, it would be nice to evaluate the whole article.!!
IDK, but it sounds kinda like a response to a Musk Tweet. To say this was a similar storm to what happened in Feb 3, 2022 when the satellites were launched, is quite a stretch. The initial CME occurred Jan 29th and the geomagnetic disturbance was expected to peak around the time they launched. IDK if SpaceX even considered it. As it turns out in post analysis of the event, there were two overlapping CMEs, But these were not particularly strong events. and should not have caused as large an impact on the density at the ~200km altitude. SpaceX suggested that density increased by 50% or more.
They did put them in safe mode and in "on edge" orientation to lessen the effects of the increased drag. (BTW, that's the primary purpose of going to "on edge" orientation to reduce drag) IDK about other potential .advantages like making a smaller target to space debris or reducing visible reflectivity and how much it attenuates communications. But it is a countermeasure that might prove helpful in certain situations.
As for why the impact on density was apparently as great as SpaceX observed, the analysis could not predict this. That could be some modelling issues or a peculiar nature of the 2 overlapping CMEs. The science of predicting the effects keeps getting better but isn't perfect.
Space weather can be pretty complicated and there are at least 3 key elements. What we have been seeing in the recent events is the impacts on the earth's geomagnetic fields and some interference in radio signals, but no unusual levels of high energy particles. It is the latter that is most likely to cause permanent destruction within satellite electronics. (These high energy particles also pose a health risk to humans in orbit and even on aircraft flying in polar regions)
CMEs that can be generated from solar flares, accelerate the solar wind and dump massive amounts of particles that head for earth.
The Kp index is a measure of impact to the geomagnetic fields. A high index, (up to 9) can be a good indicator of Aroura visibility but it doesn't tell the whole story. The impacts on radio frequency interference on the HF and higher frequencies is another factor that can be measured and predicted and solar radiation of high energy particles is another factor. High energy particle can come from other galactic sources too, but are usually shielded from getting to earth by the magnetosphere.
Please note that what I just described is a pretty simplified description of "Space Weather". The point being that it is not something so simple as to be accurately described by one index or variable. There are different impacts that can arise from "solar storms" And there are different countermeasures. Being in LEO under the protection of the magnetosphere tends to protect pretty well against the most dangerous threats from high energy particles, but it isn't perfect and some particles can an do get through and additional shielding is needed. If you're headed to the Moon or Mars, this type of radiation becomes a much bigger threat to both man and machine.
Fantastic comment. Thank you for taking the time. Blessings.
Pro tip, Skip the crap and go to 3:04
Great Video ! If the Solar Wind/Storm heats the upper atmosphere, the edge of the Solar Panels should lead in the direction of travel ! More drag from the air than from the Solar Wind ! ! ! The Tech developed to return to the moon to stay, can take US and the world to Mars and beyond ! tjl
The solar panels are at knife edge
🚀🚀
Hey Bret winestine and Ben Davidson were talk about this. This morning on the Darkhorse podcast.
Ahhh!!! 🚀🚀👍🏻
Yeah, thanks to Ben we knew this was coming. Good info over on Suspicious Observers. Funny how the "news" organizations who discussed the storm never mentioned the pole shift and our weaking magnetic shield.
not effected here in manila
👍🏻👍🏻
I got the degraded message on the app didn’t notice any issues with service
🚀
You claim starting at about min 13:15 that changing the angle will cause particles will pass the Starlink satellites, these particles are high energy particles like gamma rays and muons, and they pass through the Starlink sattelite without any problem. You need a metre of water, or a few inches of lead to shield a substantial amount of solar radiation. I don't think that is in the design of starlink. So conclusive, i don't think that the angle towards the sun is of any influence for less or more disturbance. I enjoyed your documentary very much.
Thanks so much!! 🚀
90 degrees ? :)
45 on edge. Not sure if it is a complete 90 or there might be no connection to the earth. Not sure. Thanks for that.
Do you know if Starlink deorbited any of their satellites during the storm? I was out in the middle of nowhere taking a time lapse when I saw an extremely bright white light overhead flying faster than any plane I've ever seen and it was actually was maneuvering unlike any satellite I've ever seen. Just before it got beyond my line of sight I saw 3 big flashes similar to that clip where the Bradley IFVs were pounding that T-90 and it disappeared. This happened just before 4 am pacific time over Washington state.
I think I caught the first part of it coming over head on time lapse, but have yet to dig into the photos. Will be posting the video on my channel when I do though.
Wow. You might have caught something. I’ve not heard about any being de-orbited. .
I received a message said degraded service, was investigating. May 12, 2024
My Starlink app told me it can’t find my location
Probably a stupid question but do Tesla’s receive starlink signals
They will.
You mean 90 degrees , not 45 :)
Yes
Seeing the Northern lights in this region it's not a good thing. It might be pretty. If you delve into it our planetary magnetosphere is weakening during the pole shift. Leaving us vulnerable to the sun and space weather. Just ask Elon
🚀
There was nothing to “see”…speeds fell of some but back to normal within 12 hrs. All hype and now we know…just like COVID
😜
Musky: blah blah blah
Any HAARP theories on the war of stories?
Tesla. Some owners are just plain lazy.
😱
it is not just the storm level but where it converges. even a K5 kevel can hit a satellite hard. Not much extra shielding at 500 Km then what it is at 37000 Km. just a few milliseconds time difference for the electron or protons clouds. Magnetic storm is more likely an electric storm from the sun guided by the earth's magnetic storm away from the earth surface, but notall is shielded or is concentrated . one of those cases where an official name does not clearly say what it really is. Good caveat: I am not an engineer. don't keep the satellite in auto-pilot. oh wow that is brilliant. kind of comment from a person without related engineering background. The added power is not there for it to plow through a mud cover of electrons dude. Please limit comments to things you know and not much what you find on news channels hell bent into making what causes them fear to go away and down.
Is space X using gps in its cars?
It uses military gps satellites at this moment
👍🏻👍🏻
Um, your knife edge theory's might be right, but you have your 45 degree manoeuvre confused with an actual 90° manoeuvre.
Correct. Misspoke.
The past week in Costa Rica I've experienced short outages and variances of signal strength, other than momentary lapses with my phone, the streaming seemed to be stable so far.
On another topic, I find myself skipping over as much of your introduction as possible as well as when you repeat yourself, just my opinion if you shortened your video I'd enjoy it more as well as staying on topic, meaning your history isn't relevant as much as the credible sources you reference which is what is most important, I'm truly not trying to insult you, just offering constructive criticism ✌️
YOU BEG TOO MUCH

Does your beard start inching at this level?
turned 41 today, J. dam good day too. tomo is a rain all day. so mama nature say happy birthday to me with this nice day lol..
im not missing the next stream. promise! :)
good reporting bud. how bout the next launch coming up??? OMG!! :)))
this solar storm stuff seems to be on the map more and more. i guess since more and more people are watching for them and reporting on them. speaking of such, hey. i guarantee you at some point they'l use them as an excuse to cover their bs up. like a so called "natural disaster" that just happens to points back at them. but nope, it be a solar storm effect or some horse sht like that lol.. talking about the government or governments. all them 4 letter word prix lol
anyways. nice seein ya bud
Happy happy happy Birthday 🎉
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your kindness and support!! Many blessinsg!!!!!
Thanks!
Thank you for your kindness and support Scott!!!! Appreciate it.
