During the time I was getting the warning about degraded service, I got the best BEST speed test I ever got, 407 down, 16.7 up, 31ms latency. I'm in far west Texas using roam on gen 3. May 11, 2024, 7:29AM central.

I normally get >100MB/s @ 30ms latency. During the storms I got 17MB/s w/ 62ms latency. All considered, I was thrilled to still be able to see what was going on in the world. No complaints about Starlink here.

It was a G5 Extreme, the highest level for solar flare storms. My APC battery backups went haywire. I'm looking at EMP protection at the breaker so it insulates my battery backups. I've also been monitoring the NoAA site, it has decent graphs and projections.

There's two changes since the 38 that had been lost:
    1) 2nd stage was doing single-burn. This imparted maximum energy which increased apogee, but kept perigee low. The new flight profile went back to having a second burn to raise perigee. This lessens atmospheric drag in early orbit.
    2) The Gen 1.x satellites had one solar panel, which would act like a large rudder. This would make it impossible to turn the satellite (and therefore the thruster) to raise the satellite's altitude. The Gen 2 satellites have a pair of solar panels, so any drag would be symmetric, and not impede attitude control. And as you said, Gen 2 has more thrust-to-weight than V1, so does a better job climbing.

The transmitter could be indipendant of the way the solar cells point twards the sun. With the increase energy of the solar wind the cells could have enough power to run the sattlite with less degrading of the signal with only the electormagnitic interference cutting down the signal.

Someone probably already posted this regarding Tesla Autopilot. Autopilot is not Full Self Driving. Autopilot is mostly smart cruise control which you can optionally add lane retention function to if you want. It comes with the car at not extra cost. Full Self Driving is still a major optional cost or you can lease the service for $99 per month.

I read the NZ Herald article, and felt that Chris Keall (the tech journalist) should have pointed out that it was GPS that was degraded, and nothing to do with Tesla. I regularly see errors of 10-20m on my iPhone tracking app when I hike through the steep gullies in the hills near my hometown. If degraded GPS during the weekend really was a significant thing for Tesla then they will also have received mountains of high quality data from their fleet around the world, so all Tesla owners can expect the issue to be fixed in their next OTA update - this is Tesla after all :)

I read about the knife edge defense for the satellites, here’s my question? What happens to the GEN four satellite dishes receiving their signal since they don’t move is this height adjustment going to affect their reception? Also, another thing to think about as the satellites reach the backside of the Earth the dark side if you will then do they flatten back out so would the interference not occur when it gets dark just would like to know thanks a lot appreciate your work

I think we listened to at least a few of the same analyses of the previous solar storm that cost SpaceX several satellites before they even reached their assigned orbits. Your analysis of the current situation seems good to me, and I really like the idea that more powerful engines or additional fuel, or maybe both, have been added to newer Starlink satellites.
Of course, there is one other strategy SpaceX might be attempting in the current launch environment. Maybe they are deliberately avoiding flights into the teeth of the storm? Faster, stronger engines help a lot, but NOT BEING THERE probably helps, too. There's enough warning from NASA and other resources to pause a launch for a day or more. For that matter, SpaceX is nimble enough to push a launch a day or two sooner.

I wish you would provide the link to articles you are quoting. As you have stated, you are not an engineer, but for those of us who are, it would be nice to evaluate the whole article.!!
IDK, but it sounds kinda like a response to a Musk Tweet. To say this was a similar storm to what happened in Feb 3, 2022 when the satellites were launched, is quite a stretch. The initial CME occurred Jan 29th and the geomagnetic disturbance was expected to peak around the time they launched. IDK if SpaceX even considered it. As it turns out in post analysis of the event, there were two overlapping CMEs, But these were not particularly strong events. and should not have caused as large an impact on the density at the ~200km altitude. SpaceX suggested that density increased by 50% or more.
They did put them in safe mode and in "on edge" orientation to lessen the effects of the increased drag. (BTW, that's the primary purpose of going to "on edge" orientation to reduce drag) IDK about other potential .advantages like making a smaller target to space debris or reducing visible reflectivity and how much it attenuates communications. But it is a countermeasure that might prove helpful in certain situations.
As for why the impact on density was apparently as great as SpaceX observed, the analysis could not predict this. That could be some modelling issues or a peculiar nature of the 2 overlapping CMEs. The science of predicting the effects keeps getting better but isn't perfect.
Space weather can be pretty complicated and there are at least 3 key elements. What we have been seeing in the recent events is the impacts on the earth's geomagnetic fields and some interference in radio signals, but no unusual levels of high energy particles. It is the latter that is most likely to cause permanent destruction within satellite electronics. (These high energy particles also pose a health risk to humans in orbit and even on aircraft flying in polar regions)
CMEs that can be generated from solar flares, accelerate the solar wind and dump massive amounts of particles that head for earth.
The Kp index is a measure of impact to the geomagnetic fields. A high index, (up to 9) can be a good indicator of Aroura visibility but it doesn't tell the whole story. The impacts on radio frequency interference on the HF and higher frequencies is another factor that can be measured and predicted and solar radiation of high energy particles is another factor. High energy particle can come from other galactic sources too, but are usually shielded from getting to earth by the magnetosphere.
Please note that what I just described is a pretty simplified description of "Space Weather". The point being that it is not something so simple as to be accurately described by one index or variable. There are different impacts that can arise from "solar storms" And there are different countermeasures. Being in LEO under the protection of the magnetosphere tends to protect pretty well against the most dangerous threats from high energy particles, but it isn't perfect and some particles can an do get through and additional shielding is needed. If you're headed to the Moon or Mars, this type of radiation becomes a much bigger threat to both man and machine.

Great Video ! If the Solar Wind/Storm heats the upper atmosphere, the edge of the Solar Panels should lead in the direction of travel ! More drag from the air than from the Solar Wind ! ! ! The Tech developed to return to the moon to stay, can take US and the world to Mars and beyond ! tjl

You claim starting at about min 13:15 that changing the angle will cause particles will pass the Starlink satellites, these particles are high energy particles like gamma rays and muons, and they pass through the Starlink sattelite without any problem. You need a metre of water, or a few inches of lead to shield a substantial amount of solar radiation. I don't think that is in the design of starlink. So conclusive, i don't think that the angle towards the sun is of any influence for less or more disturbance. I enjoyed your documentary very much.

Do you know if Starlink deorbited any of their satellites during the storm? I was out in the middle of nowhere taking a time lapse when I saw an extremely bright white light overhead flying faster than any plane I've ever seen and it was actually was maneuvering unlike any satellite I've ever seen. Just before it got beyond my line of sight I saw 3 big flashes similar to that clip where the Bradley IFVs were pounding that T-90 and it disappeared. This happened just before 4 am pacific time over Washington state.
I think I caught the first part of it coming over head on time lapse, but have yet to dig into the photos. Will be posting the video on my channel when I do though.

it is not just the storm level but where it converges. even a K5 kevel can hit a satellite hard. Not much extra shielding at 500 Km then what it is at 37000 Km. just a few milliseconds time difference for the electron or protons clouds. Magnetic storm is more likely an electric storm from the sun guided by the earth's magnetic storm away from the earth surface, but notall is shielded or is concentrated . one of those cases where an official name does not clearly say what it really is. Good caveat: I am not an engineer. don't keep the satellite in auto-pilot. oh wow that is brilliant. kind of comment from a person without related engineering background. The added power is not there for it to plow through a mud cover of electrons dude. Please limit comments to things you know and not much what you find on news channels hell bent into making what causes them fear to go away and down.
