Wow, the greatest country song of all time! Always brings a tear to my eye. His friend Alan Jackson sang it at George’s funeral. Thank you Adogg, watched it all with you.
To me, Alan singing that song at George's funeral outshines George and anyone else, though I'm guessing Alan's love and respect for George wouldn't let him see that.
When they asked George to record this song he didn't want to do it because he said it was so sad that no one would want to listen to it. I'm glad they persuaded him to sing it because it became his biggest hit. For some more of the magic of George Jones listen to The Grand Tour, A Picture of Me Without You, Things Have Gone to Pieces, She Thinks I Still Care, Window Up Above or Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes. You also should check out the songs Jones did with his then wife, Tammy Wynette: Golden Ring, We're Gonna Hold On, Take Me, or The Ceremony. George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, and Willie Nelson are among the singers who are known as legends in country music.
George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.
I heard George Jones say on a TV show that when he first heard this song he didn't want to record it because it was just too darn sad and nobody would like it. But it became one of, if not the most popular song in country music. A couple of other great ones... The Grand Tour and Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes. I really enjoy your reactions. Keep up the good work and have a wonderful 2023!
Johnny Cash was asked who was the greatest country singer, he asked you mean other than George Jones. He can make you cry, turn around sing a song like White Lighten and make you laugh
One of the greatest country artist of all time... This being The greatest song... My pawpaw used to sing this to my mawmaw when we were little..... It still brings tears to my eyes... We placed that wreath on my my pawpaws door may 3 2000......
Thank you for another trip down memory lane. Loved George Jones and still listen to his music, a true legend. The first George Jones song I ever heard was "White Lightening", I was still in school and this song was sung in the halls, on the bus, in class, gym, everywhere, we couldn't get enough of it. Hope you give it a listen. Thanks again, hope your New Year is the best one yet.
NO ONE!!!! And, I MEAN NO ONE can sing like "The Possum!!!" This particular song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" WILL FOREVER BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG OF ALL TIME!?!!! And, George Jones WILL FOREVER BE THE G.O.A.T. !!!!!!!!!🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐
I grew up listening to all of George Jones' music, my dad and granddad played his music all the time. They were huge country music lovers. Here's another one of his songs "George Jones - Who's Going To Fill Their Shoes" this one song will give you a glimpse into other legendary country music artists that made country music what it is today. Ole George could sing/ tell some tear jerkers for sure. RIP: George Jones U R Missed🔥💔✌
I went to George Jones concert. His nickname was "no show Jones" because of his drinking problem sometime he didnt show up. But it was my lucky day. And what a concert it was. I'll never forget it.😊❤
A true legend, one of best talents, need to hear more songs by him, George didn't want to do this song, said was too sad won't sell, plus another breakup with Tammy and was just getting sober again, that was short version lol, he wrote most songs and about life, one of latest was blues man, basically about his life.. who's gonna fill their shoes is another jumps to mind, omg so many.. best way to hear many more is watch memorial tribute 👍
You picked a good one--the best country song ever written and sung by George Jones... "The One I Loved Back Then" is another great song by George. You deserve a happy one after this one. Another good one was "You Can't Get the Hell Out of Texas".
No Show Jones. One of the Crown Jewels of "Country and Western" music. His music was some of the best beer joint music, in the day. This song is one of my all time favorites for sad meaningful songs.
George could sing these sad country songs and really put them over. His voice was on the edge of maudlin, but he had such control, color, range, improvisation skills and flexibility, he never sounded maudlin. I am an opera and classical music lover, but he sure hooked me. His personal story is pretty complex. Per Ken Burns documentary “History of Country Music”, Jones peers loved his singing, but no one understood him. He and Tammy’s producer for many years (Billy Sherrill) described them as wounded animals. But George said when he and Tammy sang together it was like being in their little piece of heaven. George was a tortured soul and a great artist. RIP.
Thanks for a great reaction. The first line of the song is the give-away... "He said I'll love you till I die" Poetry ... American Country Music at its best
His wife Tammy Wynette was a beautiful singer as well. Check out some of her songs "Stand By Your Man", "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad".
When the greatest country singers of all time are listed George Jones is up there at the top. This song is considered by many to be perhaps the greatest country song of all time. George had a gift to make you feel the pain in his songs. I recommend "Choices". He sang that one at the end of his career, but it is kind of a biography of his life. Love your reactions bro.
George Jones actually hated the song and he didn’t expect it to do anything. He was a very complex individual and his best work was pre 1970. Imo it’s nowhere near his best song, let alone the best country song, albeit granted that many do think otherwise
This is one of THE best “Country” songs EVER. Another is “Blanket On The Ground” by Billie Jo Spears. You could do a lot worse than checking out the version of her singing it (wearing a red dress in the thumbnail). It’s truly outstanding. Cheers man, and Happy New Year to you and all your loved ones. From a very cold Belfast N.I. ☘️✌️
This song hit hard when they played it EVERYWHERE when George died💔❤️🩹💙 Couldn't have been more true 😭 He was known as "NO Show George" cuz he was too drunk to make it to Concerts. Booze will bring out the worst in a person. RIP George🌹
It was a true story too! He was married to Tammy Wynette & she sang beautifully! The George & Tammy series is on Showtime right now! He was my friend & he was the sweetest man on earth til he'd get drunk! Smashed up hotels, his own house & was very abusive to Tammy! She stuck up for him & covered things for him. After they had Georgina he quit, but started again. On & off he tried quitting. I think he was finally sober when he passed!! R.I.P No Show! We loved you anyway!! ❤️
It's true we love them and they are our favorites! My brother behaved like George & he was my favorite siblings among the many I have! True artist are tortured souls. My son is one of the best artist I know & I see the torture he has within his own soul 😢❤
"George might show up flying high if George shows up at all But he can be unconsciously the greatest of em all From the Beatles and me and Nashville To the billies and the Rolling Stones If we could all sing like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones". Waylon Jennings (from "It's Alright").
You picked an amazing song to do, it'll always be a great introduction to George Jones for folks that are not in to Country music. You cannot ever go wrong with George. Check out "White Lightning" or "Choices" or "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes"
Thank you so much for this...George Jones was a staple in my childhood home and this song, in particular, brings back wonderful memories of sitting around with my folks listening to the stereo...it warmed my heart.
One of my dad's favorite singers. I was a little girl when George and Tammy Wynette were married and going thru George's alcoholism. Tammy sang Stand By Your Man....She did the best to stay with him but couldn't. Then he wrote this. Wanting Tammy back. I cry when I hear it. Thank you for doing it. Takes me back 40 years to a little girl.
This is one of the saddest songs ever written in my opinion. A classic if there ever was one. He has a lot of truly wonderful songs, like Choices, I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair, and White Lightning, just to name a few!
It's often called the greatest country song ever written. Believe it or not, that wasn't his best vocal performance of it. You should also check out him doing Good year for the roses and others.

I assume most understand the meaning of this great, great song, but if not, here it is. The man the song is about said he would love her till the day he died. The only way he could ever stop loving her was to first die. He was all dressed up and carried away in his casket. One of the greatest country songs, by one of the greatest country artists of all time!
Try The Corvette Song (She was hotter than a two dollar pistol). Upbeat and fun. Anything by George Jones is amazing. He Stopped Loving Her Today is arguably the best country song ever written. It's certainly my favorite. I love your channel!
Good ole George Jones, aka "The Opossum" once got a DUI on a riding lawnmower heading to the liquor store because no body would give him his car keys. 1 of the Greatest Country Artist of all time. His Specialty was them ole crying tear jerker, tear in my beer kinda songs. Check out Who's gonna fill their shoes by George Jones for Your next G.J. Review Brudda ADogg.
Watch George and Tammy on Showtime!! It’s an amazing show!! The man had troubles most of his life but redeemed himself his last 25 to 30 years !! He lived his songs!! Greatest of all time.
George Jones was know a the best singer ever and this song is the best country song ever. No one could do what he did and still end up on top. There’s no one who can sing like him. His voice was one and a million
Considered the greatest of all country songs, certainly the saddest one of all time. He'd been a really hard drinker for decades, and didn't want to record this song, he got sober, and finally recorded it, and it was his last and biggest hit. Very much a redemption story.
Not exactly Dale. He was still drinking HARD when he was recording this and Bobby Broderick had to piece it together like a puzzle from all the different takes of the song. (The spoken word part was the hardest for him.) But you’re right that George did not want to record it. He hated the song. He is quoted as saying “nobody’s gonna buy that morbid son of a bitch.” George was wrong big-time; thank God Bobby twisted his arm!
Hey man George Jones, is a great country singer I've listened to him for years and if you want another Jones, song to react to try "HELL STAYS OPEN ALL NIGHT LONG" ANOTHER GREAT SONG THANKS
While he was called No Show Jones so much, he still had may many great hits. Grand tour was covered by Arron Neville and his White Lighting was written by The Big Bopper before his death with Buddy Holly
I'm just catching up with your reaction videos. If you haven't yet, you might like some of my favorites...mostly love songs. Roberta Flack: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face Van Morrison: Crazy Love (Moondance Album) Bob Dylan: Like a Rolling Stone Smokey Robinson: Cruisin'
I appreciate that you didn't ruin this by constantly stopping & talking, listening to a whole song then commenting, only shows respect for the singer Plus as a viewer i like seeing that you waited before commenting. Other singers who talk thru the whole song have been deleted so i appreciate how you handled listening to this song.
George was an alcoholic and used to hang out in our community (North West Alabama) with a few well known like minded people.. lol His nick name was Possome.. look at the eyes.. lol One of the greatest singers of all time.
He’s a legend & it took over a 100 takes for the opening line bc he was so drunk…He also won a Grammy 2 years in a row for this song…George & Tammy on Max tells the story of his life with his x wife Tammy Wynette who is a legend as well. He struggled with cocaine during this era of his career. R.I.P. George we love & miss you
You should react to Alan Jackson’s “Here In The Real World”. He has so many good songs. Saw him in concert in the 90’s and when he walked out on stage i was shocked to see he was all legs. What a performer he was and I love his music. Love your reactions, thanks for sharing.
George was married to Tammy Wynette. They had some awesome songs together as well as by themselves. You want a tear jerker of George listen to "Grand Tour" He drank for years until he met his present wife. He even got a DUI riding his John Deere lawnmower to the store for more beer. You can't go wrong listening to George by himself, Tammy by herself or the two of them together. "Golden Ring" is one of my favorites of them.
Great story teller. He had many country hits solo and with his wife/ex-wife Tammy Wynette. I suggest listening to White Lightning, Who's going to fill their shoes, I don't need your rocking chair, The one I loved back then or The race is on. If you want to hear one of his and Tammy's duets try Golden Ring or We're going to hold on.
A legendary song from a legend. I cry every time I hear "they put a wreath upon his door". George has many great songs. ❤❤❤❤❤
get ahold of yourself

I suggest listening to White Lightning, Who's going to fill their shoes, I don't need your rocking chair, The one I loved back then or The race is on. If you want to hear one of his and Tammy's duets try Golden Ring or We're going to hold on.
"THE KING IS GONE" is another George Jones song you should play sometime, peace.
He was the best!
You have found one of the greatest singers of all time. Just pick a song and it will be pure country gold
A great old country song thats been forgotten is "Skip a Rope" by Henson Cargill.
Country tells a life story about real pain, love, and loss this is the best ever song.
The possum was an icon. Love his music
Play The Grand Tour by him. It will rip your heart out too. He is the King of Country.
