The first line, “ he said I’ll love you til I die”, he was a man of his word.
She must react to The Grand Tour
Can’t ask more of a man than that 😢
It is said that George Jones was the only person on the planet who could get 10 notes out of one syllable. You caught that when he said "HER today". I'm very proud of you for immediately catching on to the fact that "they placed a wreath upon his door" was another way of saying he had died. I watched one reaction and the guy listened to the entire song, and he had a huge smile on his face and said, "He finally moved on because he stopped loving her today." I sort of wanted to bang my head against the wall because he TOTALLY missed the point of the song. You said it's a sad song and yes, it is. In fact, it's so sad that George did not want to record it because he said, "It so sad that no one will want to hear it." It became his biggest hit! Thank you so much for reacting to this monster hit by George Jones!
I'm sorry I didn't read your post before I sent mine a minute ago. Apologies! My late grandpa born in 1906 never wanted Christmas wreaths on his door for that same reason. Have a good 2023.
A LOT of reactors miss the meaning of this song, and I'm like, "What?"... "How?"... can you not understand the lyrics? Then, like you, I'm looking for a wall to bang my head against.
It's also obvious that the guy dies bc the song says that he would "love her till he died" and it is titled, and says that "he stopped loving her today." Idk how some people dont put two and two together
Great reaction...you got it....
This is a bad recording cause they cut the first words out but yes most reactors miss it and they think it’s a happy love song
I cried my eyes out watching Alan Jackson sing this song at George Jones’ funeral. Truly a touching performance, ALONG WITH Vince Gill’s “go rest high on that mountain”
omg that sound so incredibly sad but beautiful
@@brittreacts You must listen to Go Rest High on that Mountain by Vince Gill with Ricky Scaggs and Patty Loveless. Makes me cry every time I hear it, especially knowing what it's written about.
OMG Vince Gill
ME TOO!
57 year old male and yes I broke down. George was the one.
I watch my 98 year-old father miss my mother. They were married 66 years. He'll stop loving her when he leaves this world.
To prey on someone's mind is an expression that just means he couldn't get her out of his mind. The tragedy was she fell out of love with him and ended the relationship, but he couldn't move on. She just came back to pay her respects. 💗
Your the typical American White woman, feminist, arrogant, male hating, selfish, psycho who would do this to a man and think nothing of it. I hope you enjoy your useless life of loneliness.
@@petergrandahl2386 I think you need some help. I'm explaining the meaning of a song and you make assumptions about me and my life. Who hurt you? The only person in this thread with hate and arrogance so far is you. Do better
She ran off with a travelling salesman.
😢
I got so tired watching reactors who never got the meaning of this beautiful song. You got it right away! You actually add feeling and context. Making me like you.
This is the greatest country song ever made
Man of his word. He loved her till he died.
The country singers of the past left us with some incredible music. It was real, often raw, with lyrics that were transcendent. This is my very favorite country song of all time. In every facet, it’s perfectly done.
George Jones was a real man - only a man's man can be this weathered and still look good.
Saddest song in Country...EVER! Great song. Imagine loving someone THAT much! Only the lucky ones are loved back as deeply as they love!
I also call it the saddest country song ever.
Can't believe someone so young knew about the wreath on the door . Greatest country song AND singer ever
Where I'm from we still have wreaths on the door when someone dies.
My dad (1919-2010) well remembered the wreath on the door. He even commented on it upon hearing this song.
I was born in west Texas, and we have always had wreaths on the door where there is a death.
She was also looking at the lyrics, and might have seen the next line, “and soon they’ll carry him away.”
George was awesome but I go with Waylon
George is old school country. He is a true story teller. Any of his songs is worth a listen. Possum is a legend. As always, I love your reaction.
Yes, George is using different vocal inflections and minor lyric changes in this live performance. When something "preys upon your mind", you simply can't stop thinking about it. RIP Possum.
She didn't deliberately remain in his mind. He just couldn't forget her.
That’s the reason I don’t like live performances, the artists usually change things and usually it’s not for the better…
@@johnk275 Cut George some slack. I couldn't get through the lyrics half as well bein' as drunk as he usually was.
@@rajvader haha, he wasn't great live, I think he was very nervous on stage and of course therefore fairly drunk most of the time, conway was fantastic on stage and although george is like..imo the greatest voice ever, had a voice made to tear heart strings, he wasn't great on stage..at least as he got older, when he was younger he looked pretty relaxed but by himself center stage never looked easy for him
Although the song wasn't written by George Jones he was going through turmoil with Tammy wynette whom he loved very much and he destroyed that marriage by drinking and abusing her so he's actually singing the song that actually Tammy would be singing about him
Alan Jackson sang this at George’s funeral and it was super powerful. ❤
I am glad you found traditional country music. George Jones is considered the king of country music.
This song is the definition of country music
I love the face you made when you realized he had passed. This was one of my mom's favorite songs...😊
"If we all could sound like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones." ~ Waylon Jennings
George Jones was my dad’s favorite artist. I now have my dad’s album collection and every single album George sang on. This is my favorite song.
I was lucky that no show Jones came to the concert I saw. He did leave early, long story.
Allan Jackson sang this at the Memorial for George Jones in 2013. It was truly heartbreaking.
I can hear this song a thousand times, I ball my eyes out everytime.
Dag burn that George.
This song has been voted the best country song in history multiple times. Even though George didn't want to record it. Said it was too morbid.
ha ha,in the begining George said it was the dumbest son ever before he finally recorded then change his tune after it was released !! if you RUclips it type in the name and add "studio version
George Jones was know as the best country singer ever and he stopped loving her today is the best country song ever. George was a family friend he was a very down to earth. The best thing about him was he never believed he was so great.
The way I understand the song, she wasn't playing mind games with him, he just couldn't forget her. The story goes that George Jones didn't want to record this. He didn't think anyone would buy it because it was just "too damn sad". It became one of his biggest hits. For a more lighthearted song, check out "The One I Loved Back Then".
As I read the story, what George said was, "No one wants to hear this morbid son of a bitch!" And, of course, it did become a massive hit, which put his career back on track. His drinking issues, and his behavior because of it, had nearly killed his career, but this song pulled him out of that slump.
you are correct about that! George also had a very hard time recording this song. In the studio he kept drinking and messing up because he was so sad. They brought in Tammy Wynette to inspire him and when he saw her he did the song in one take. All of sorrow over losing her just poured out. The song is about her.
@@magnificenthonky That's the correct quote
It's sad, but I can still see how it's good in its own way. "The One I Loved Back Then" is more lighthearted.
Yeah, I don't think of her as the villain here, she was even sympathetic enough to come to the funeral is the way I see it. Love how this is told third person as someone who knew him and her and even comments how the gang down at the bar (wherever( wondered if she'd show up.
This song has been voted the best country song of all time 💙💙💙
3:19 -- "Preyed upon his mind" here means he can't stop thinking about her--like 'she walked the corridors of his mind'.
I grew up with his music. Seeing you discover George and how the story hits you half way through brought me to tears. Thanks
The first line in the song says it all. - "He said I'll love you 'til I die."
He was as drunk as an owl in this version! Find the original studio version. It is the one that went all the way to the top of the country charts!👌❤️
@1973 thunderbirds It is a sign of weakness & lack of character for Any man to lose his composure to the point where violence is introduced into a relationship; Alcohol, or not. Granted, women Can push a man to the Brink, but you just Don’t cross that line, in my opinion. Once you do, the relationship will never fully recover…
@1973 thunderbirds ❤️🙏✝️
So drunk
hell the possum was drunk 90% of the time but he could still sing the hell out of a song
@@MoparDan74Yeah, I don’t think they realize he was drunk and/or high for most of this time period. But still that voice
Sooo glad you caught the meaning of the song. Can't tell you how many reactioners have missed it. "He said I'll love you, till I die...." Great job!
George Jones is my favorite artist of all time. He was pretty lit up during this performance though. lol
Of all of the reactions I have seen you were the FIRST ONE TO KNOW WHEN HE SAID THEY PLACED A WREATH ON HIS DOOR THAT THE MAN MAN HAD PASSED AWAY.
so true. They all think that SHE is the one who died.
My family still puts wreath's on t he front door when 1 of us dies. If you like this: try sordid lives tv show or films. It is not serious but hilarious about Southerners.
@@annadam which I don't understand. You don't stop loving a person when they die, right? My wife died 5 years ago, and I still love her like I did then, and always will. If you die, you have to stop loving them because you're not here anymore. I knew what this song meant when I was 12 years old. I don't get young people these days. Most of the reactions to this think the woman died, which makes zero sense. At least this young lady understood it right away.
@@SuprJoinT in the song, he said “I’ll love you til the day I die”. Then he died. So that’s the day he stopped loving her. No one is saying that a living person stops loving someone when that loved one dies…
@@annadam Yes, I totally get that. I was saying that I didn't understand the people who reacted to this and somehow thought the woman died.
there are thousands of great country songs and great singers. George is a great singer.
I love that you got it! That he stopped loving her because he passed away. So he loved her until the day he died! Some people miss that snd like you first thougt, oh good, he got over her. Yes he did, but not in this lifetime! Another George Jones song is The One I Loved Before and. Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes! ❤❤❤
Its great to see such a bright, beautiful intelligent young person.
Hello Confusion ... 💙💙💙🎼💙💙💙 .. so you made it to the greatest Country Music song of all time. All others are compared to this .. a true pleasure to see you enjoy this. George Jones is on Mt Rushmore.. this is what Country Music is all about. TY
I saw George Jones in concert several years before he passed. As soon as the first rift on the guitar played this song, the whole stadium was on its feet! Certainly one of his best. Other good ones by Jones are Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes and The Grand Tour.
George Jones was my favorite singer and I am a71 year old man with tears running down my face because the song reminds me of my wife who I lost in 2014 and this coming October will be10 years.
Awesome reaction and to let it be known to many Mr. George Jones is recognized as the Voice for Country Music! Now you see why, God Bless!
This is considered to be the greatest country song of all time. And George is arguably the greatest country singer. When he first heard the song he said " I'll sing it. I love the song. But, it will never sell. It's just to damn sad."
I love the sincere shock on your face when you catch the meaning of these country songs
I'm a Kentucky grandma.. George Jones is my favorite artist and this is my favorite song. I got a kick out of you realizing the point.. You should listen to more, he has some funny and upbeat ones too..
Yes young lady. Everyone should be introduced to ( all ) music. I personally am what people call eclectic. I love ( ALL) jaunras. I'm so happy to see young people get excited over the older and unlisted to music.
Released in 1980, this was named the number 4 saddest song in country music history by Rolling Stone Magazine. George didn't even want to do this song at first, yet it became his biggest hit.
The song got nominated in 1980 and 1981. Not sure if it got an award for both years. Brit, check out his hair for White Lightning. Other songs George sang were Bartender's Blues, She Still Thinks I Still Care, The Race Is On, and there is another song where he uses his upper range and lower range. Conway Twitty is a singer to check out. His hits are Hello Darlin', Don't Cry, Joni (a story song you might like,) It's Only Make Believe, Slow Hand (Pointer Sisters' song), The Rose (Bette Midler song), Lay You Down, and more.
No one ever said RS magazine was ever astute. Not only was this the saddest song ever written, It was also the greatest love song ever written. That's a lot considering some of Elvis's songs.
I feel like whiskey lullaby is the modern he stopped loving her today. But George is the blueprint for this tragic love loss.
If I remember right, this song was the #1 Country song of both 1980 & 1981. It must have been released at just the right time to straddle the two years.
@@sparky6086 In April 1980, It was just that good.
Great reaction. You caught on quick with what happened to his friend. George has a lot of great songs. Check out "The Grand Tour."
When they gave this song to
George He didn’t want to record it because he said it was the saddest song he had ever heard But he ended up recording the song and it was his number one hit of all time and The grand old opera voted it the greatest country song of all time As my life has turned out It feels like this song was written for me
Always chosen as one of the best country song of all time.
I am so glad you understood. So many people today either don't catch or don't understand the line "they placed a wreath upon his door". Here in the deep south we still place a wreath on the door of a deceased person.
I loved your reactions to this song. That is the way everyone feels that listens to the song.
George....one of the very greatest.
Now you know what a legend sounds like cause George is all that. Great reaction.
The best country love song ever written. I grew up listening to George and Tammy. They were my dad's favorite singers back in the early 70's and I can't stop listening to them today. The basis of the song is that he loved her all through his life even though she did not love him, and he went crazy every now and then because of his love for her. He stopped loving her when he died. It's funny, I am in that same place right now with someone I love and does not love me back. It is sad but I can't see loving anyone else, so I'd rather be alone. I am happy in my life and have everything I have ever wanted except for her. Thanks for the video.
I saw him 4 times live in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Saw him in a club , the small venues and The Houston Astrodome. He was so good! The Goat!! My favorite singer .
It was 1982, I was almost 13..my first dance with a guy was to this song. Randy West, I remember you. The lyrics hit deep...he literally loved her til the day he died, and he died with a smile on his face cause it was over.
Girl, this is the greatest country Song ever.😊
George was great and has so many hits. R.I.P
you got the meaning in this song right away, im 54 and heard this song as a child and did not get it till i was in my 20's congrats,
I seen George Jones live in Akron Ohio during his last tour before he died, he was old and he was sick but he did an amazing performance
Generally considered the Number One Country Music song of all time.
this tear jerker gets me all the time. when it first came out, some of the us drank a few beers and crried a little.. the greatest song in c music..it takes you to your heart strings...this story tells of a mans life in its most dark times.
This was voted "The Best Country Song in History" for many decades. I am so happy you did not know the 'hook 'of the song and you had to discover it. I have heard the song hundreds of times and tears are on my face when I see you realize WHY he stopped loving her today.
George has a very interesting quality to his voice. In some ways like no other........... Country soul ! Thanks George.
He couldn't get Tammy Waynette out of his mind. He loved her so much. But after the divorce they remained friends. ❤
I’ve listened to this song for years and still get choked up.
One of the best and saddest songs ever written and performed. 😢❤ Yes, the 70’s clothes and whole vibes were awesome!! 😊
Talk about crying, I drove into Nashville for the first time on April 26, 2013 around 10:00 AM and as I was pulling into the city they announced on the radio that George Jones had just passed away. My friends and I stayed all week, they went to the funeral, I watched it from our hotel room. Every country artist you could think of was there. George’s wife was in the front row of the Grand Ol Opry and Allen Jackson sung “He stopped loving her today”, there was as not a dry eye in the building.
You'll never hear anything any better than the great George Jones.
You are such a gem. Some off the best reactions, and I appreciate that you really listen. Very few understand this song on the reaction channels, and it's such a powerful song that it is just lost.
Who's Gonna Fill Their Shows is one of his later songs that I highly recommend, but actually suggest holding it for a bit until you hear some more of the various Country masters.
The Ride would be a great next song and is often overlooked. You're the Reason the Kids are Ugly is a hit. Really just about anything by George Jones is great.
She prayed upon his mind as in he thought about her constantly like the one that has prayed on my mind for 43 years.
My parents have a fairytale marriage. They have never parted. This will be THE song when i lose them. 😢😢
Old style Country/ Western was Americs's music. Raw, emotions worn on the sleeve, pathos, every local bar, the Little/ Forgotten Man & his life. Uniquely American.
My dad had a drinking problem, when I was 10 they finally got divorced, every time I went to visit my dad he was always depressed and drinking and listening to this old country. After 20 years , 20 YEARS , they found love again, my dad stopped drinking, found God , shortly after cancer found him , took him after 3 months, my mother the very next year, cancer found her, 3 months she was gone. I know they found each other again and will live eternity loving each other. Just before Christmas a unknown illness my brother battled for years took him but with his last few words, you could barely hear him but he asked his wife, who's that black headed woman in the corner with her head down praying, ofcourse we didn't see anybody but my mother had jet black hair, theres no doubt in my mind she came back for her baby boy. Bible says God will send a loved one back to guide us to the other side. I miss my brother so much, he was my rock, anytime things was going bad I could call or text him and he'd guide me through it, a man that was bed ridden was my rock, ot all happened so fast, I miss them but I know they would never come back to this pitiful world
God bless you, it's very hard to lose so many people you love. Just remember you'll see them again in Heaven.
Listen to a George Jones song called "The Grand Tour". Absolutely beautiful. Another beautiful song by George Jones is "A Picture Of Me Without You".
He was true Country .RIP 🌺
This song was voted as the best country song of all time
The greatest country song and singer ever !
George is one of the greatest story tellers in music history.
John Michael Montgomery had one of the best stories ever. It's called The Little Girl. If you love story telling this is the song.
Yes.. The Little Girl is an often overlooked gem. 😉
I would recommend the official music video for the first listen on that one.
I thought it was called Don’t Take The Girl. 🤷🏻
My bad. That was Tim McGraw. That’s a great one too!
@@Godzilla14carfan Yes, that one is good too. Definitely different 😂
I am soooo old, but this song still makes me cry EVERY darn time.
I think this is the best country song ever written, maybe the best song ever written period!
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. Im not a big country fan, but the lyrics and delivery of this song are legendary.
Sometimes, we have a connection that stays with us forever. Don't be upset with her as she might not even have been aware of his feelings after they parted. I have always identified with this song because I have a similar circumstance. My first fiancee and I parted ways more than 50 years ago and we both moved on with our lives. But she still resonates with me as a love I will never forget.
You saved me telling the same story ... Thank you !
I'm 64 grew up listening to George and never get tired of hearing this song, it's still the best song ever and the story telling talent that George had can't be matched, the song still gives me chills and tears.
OMG woman! Not only have I been observing people get introduced to this song that weren't really familiar with the older Country Music my whole life, I have also watched many reactions to it and I am not exaggerating when I say that you are the very fastest reaction to get this that I have ever seen. Ever.
You got it right in the middle of the third line of the chorus, "All dressed up to go away." You are so damn quick. The line that absolutely kills me initially though is the second line, where they placed a wreath upon his door. That for me is when the whole meaning of the song starts to shift, and I think that's what happened to you as well, and then that next line confirms it.
A lot of people don't even get it by the end of the song. And to be fair, I was a child when I first started hearing it on the radio, but it really wasn't until I was older that it dawned on me what the real meaning was. To me as a little kid, it was just another sappy adult song, but it was such a massive hit and I could literally see it make the older women in my family get teary-eyed. But it transcended for me because his voice is so amazing and I loved George Jones even then, mostly because of his upbeat funny stuff.
The Ole' Possum, as they called him, was the King of Country Music there for a while, along with his wife Tammy Wynette, the Queen of Country Music. And she is still probably my favorite country singer, although there are many.
But there is also a singer from decades later in the 90s that someone mentioned below, whom I absolutely revere. Her real-life story is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time, and her name is Patti Loveless. Check out one of her biggest earlier hit songs, The Night's Too Long. I think you would love the lyrics because it's kind of about empowerment but it also talks about what happens when you buy into the regular work world to get ahead, and I've seen you talk about your own experience with that not that long ago. Plus I love the song, it just kicks and her voice is incredible. She really represents the older style of country music even while she was breaking norms in the 90s.
As far as George Jones, there is some early stuff in black and white footage that shows his manic and hilarious side, for example White Lightning, huge early hit for him.
But since you are new to country music, and I thought of this the other day on the Patsy Cline reaction, you are excellent at picking out little voice ornamentations and pitch and you can replicate it perfectly, but what you REALLY have to pay very close attention to in this kind of music, is the vocal phrasing.
It is a complete art and it is amazing when you really start to notice what all they are doing, and it can get technically very rhythmically complicated, and yet they make it sound so natural, just part of the emotional conversation they are having with you. It reminds me of the concept of flow in hip-hop and rap.
They sing before the beat and after the beat and they stretch things out and then compress them, and it's very malleable and expressive. So much so that it actually takes talented musicians and a tight band or studio musicians to be able to hold down the beat with the right feeling underneath it and not be pulled off of the meter. "Rubato" would be the closest classical term for it.
And then when it hits right on the beat, it has all this punch - it just creates wonderful emotional tension and then release. It's my favorite thing about country music singing and a lot of other singing for that matter. I love the way Tammy Wynette phrases as well, but it really is a hallmark of good country music singing. Conway Twitty singing Hello, Darling is another fantastic example from later the 1970s. And there is a live cut of that floating around RUclips that is quite popular.
Absolutely love your reactions. And I'm so happy that you've got the media playback volume up and really present now, and got rid of the echo and the thin sounding mix by using good headphones. It's already one of the best presented reaction channels out there and I love it. I also really like how the video just starts right in and once you do your sign-off, it's immediately over. There's something about that that really appeals to me. Congratulations on 30K subs!
Now this is a comment that everyone should aspire to post once in a lifetime! Well done Sir!!
@@djmattese I totally agree 😊
@@djmatteseI just stumbled across this nearly a year later, but thank you for saying so. I just read through that long diatribe and yeah man I was really feeling it I guess. I still agree with all of those things.
A legend. Thanks for the fab reaction! I love George & got to see him on his last tour. Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes (A Lot of References to other country greats you may not know yet) & A Picture of Me Without You are painfully beautiful songs. No Show Jones is a fun one & is about how George had a drinking problem and wouldn't show up to his own shows, people would have to be refunded. He earned the nickname 'No Show Jones' and Tammy divorced him. Later he got sober and came out with No Show Jones...
Saddest song ever written.
Loved your reaction to this George was the man this was an instant classic
Yeah, that first line tells which way the song is headed. He does a great job on this.
Britt, this is quite possibly the greatest country song ever written. Not just my opinion, it's generally acknowledged.
Oh man! "This lil Jezebel..." I love this beautiful inside and out woman. I love her reactions I have watched, pry all of em. God's Blessings!
I was a teenager into my 20's in the 1970's. I loved and played rock n roll. Later in life I found an appreciation for, and then a love for old country music. With apologies to Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Puccini's Nessun Dorma...and several thousand others...This song, sang by this man, is the one and only perfect song every recorded.
You nailed it!!!!! You dont know how many reactors totally miss the meaning...im going to be honest, I was a little nervous for you to do this one, but you knocked it out of the park!!!! Great reaction!!!!
What a great reaction!! I knew you had no idea what was coming in the chorus, and you didn't disappoint! This is widely considered one of, if not the, saddest song in country music. Alan Jackson sang this at George Jones's funeral. Truly a great song.
A good story will always draw me in to any type of music. Then the emotion that a singer puts into it really puts it all into perspective.
Greatest country song of all time. Thanks for playing it glad you injoyed it
Thank You for being the first reactor I've seen who got it. The key is the first line"He said he'd love her til he died".
And they should get it when they place a wreath upon his door but people don't really do that anymore...y'all they used to put a black wreath on the door to let people know...
A good reaction, many miss the point of the song. I'm glad you caught it. George had a rough life and many of his songs communicate the pain that he himself experienced. He also did some lighter songs and some that are just reflective. This song is often listed as the best country music song of all time. So you are right in saying it has that typical country song. Some others by him that are worth a listen:
"White Lightning"
"The Grand Tour"
"If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me."
And of course many many more.
I LOVE your reaction - you got it!!!
I played this song 10 times just to hear that one part
This song has been voted several times as the best love song ever written. I love that you caught the wreith reference immediately. The first line of the song foreshadows the ending. Great reaction!
