And still does in some states. I am from NC and the funeral homes out a wreath in the door of the one that passed house or whatever house the family will be at. We don't see this here in TX.

My son heard this for the first time when he was 7. I didn’t even know he was listening. He said dad, did the man die. I said yea. That’s when he stopped loving her. He said that’s the saddest song I ever heard snd a tear rolled down his cheek.
My dad lived 13 very sad years without my mom. And the day of his funeral I had a little comfort knowing he was finally with her once again, and I still cry thinking. About it and hearing this song! 😢
This is considered the greatest country song of all time. It is the combination of the song and George Jones. Every country music lover LOVES George Jones. LOVES, LOVES, LOVES George Jones!
I was going to say the same thing. It's crazy how many people don't get it. And also Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis, lots of people don't get that one either.
I wonder if it’s the phrase about placing the wreath that throws people off. If it was a more current traditions, they would pick up on what was going on. But it’s sad. It’s about like Abbott & Costello’s Who’s On First. Reactors usually just react to the exasperation of Costello or they have heard the routine before.
My grandparents were like that. Years after she died my grandfather told me a story. He was helping my grandma stand up off the bed and she was a fairly large woman and quite weak. They tried several times and she couldn't get on her feet and started to cry, frustration and embarrassment and just scared of her situation. He said he looked at her and wiped off her tears and said "If you help me, I'll help you. Together there's nothing we can't do." They've both been gone a long time now but i will never forget that story
What a beautiful story. Touched my heart and reminds me of the grandma who had to go through that. She was a strong lady. My Grandpa died at 70 of cancer and my grandma lived to 99. Miss them all along with my parents and my husband too. The memories is what keeps me smiling.
George didn’t want to record this song. He said no one would listen because it was so damn maudlin. But he was talked into it and it became one of his biggest hits. He was known as no-show Jones because he had a real problem with drugs and alcohol. He was one of a kind and that little warble in his voice is unique to him. He and Tammy Wynette were the royal couple of country music back in the day. Their duets are beautiful.
I’m in my early 40s and I was raised on this music. The music of Ms. Lynn and Mr. Twitty was something special I had with my dad. He was born in WV but moves to Michigan with his parents for his dad to work in the auto plants and to come to think of it, my dad followed in his dad’s footsteps. We lost my dad in 91 due to cancer. It was a sudden diagnosis and quick passing.
My parents divorced when I was 14 and my dad told me this was his song to my mother. Thirty years later, he still reminds me to play this song for her when he’s gone. Although he remarried, he will love her until he dies. 💔
I feel that way, too. Best Country song ever written - and it wasn't written by George. It was written by Nashville songwriting greats, Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman. They didn't take it seriously either, until George did it. Mailbox money forever.
As a songwriter and a country music fan for nearly 60 years I can see no reason whatsoever that this should be considered as the best country song ever written. Besides, exactly what criteria would one be using to make that judgement? Is it a great song? Yup. Best ever? Nah.
My Mom was a DJ on WSM radio in Nashville. Her and my step Dad became best friends with George and his wife Nancy. They use to go with George on tour. When my Stepdad died suddenly, George paid for his funeral!! Great man!!❤
8:48 I don’t know you’ll ever see this but at George Jones’s memorial Vince Gill sang his song, go rest high on that mountain, and it was probably one of the most emotional tributes that I’ve ever seen. Patty Loveless had to carry him vocally through that because he broke down crying. And that actually says a lot because Vince Gill wrote that song when his brother died and as a tribute to Keith Whitley.
The part of that tribute that really got to me is when Vince first walked up to the mic, Charlie Daniels had just performed Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes, Vince said "I don't think they make those shoes anymore"
Cited by many as the greatest country music song of all time. Maya Angelou said it was an entire novel in one song. George's voice makes it as magnificent as it is.
This was performed at the memorial service of my best friend’s husband. She had passed suddenly eight years prior in her 40’s. He was never the same after he lost her, he never moved on and never really healed. I hope they’re together in heaven🙏

I've heard several different reactions to this song and you are one of the few that actually nailed it on the first take. Good Ole Classic Tear Jerker Country! One of the most classic and most heard old country songs ever! Old country is very simple and almost sounds backwards but all you need is a simple story and a grest voice that resonates with everyone, He Stop Loving Her Today, even the title resonates with everyone and once you fnd out he died that just seals the deal!
George Jones the best country singer to ever live, he was great at praising, he sang through clenched teeth, saving his voice for the drama of the song. He used his mouth as an instrument, he was a genius. I will love him forever. At the time of this recording, he was going through terrible times, divorce and heavily into alcohol and cocaine.
George Jones is my all time favorite and so is this song. This song describes exactly mine and my late husband’s life. It hurts so bad ever time I hear it. He didn’t know I have never stopped loving him.
Wow, you got it right, the opening line was He said I'll love you till I die. And so he did! Mr. Jones lived a hard life! His wife, Tammy Wynette was also a singer and together they had some great hits! Fabulous reaction!
You got it. So many don’t because they are more interested in looking like they’re into the song than truly listening. If there’s one thing you can count on in a country song is that it will be straightforward. There will be symbolism in parts but what you hear is what is meant. This song, the greatest country song of all time, is so perfect in its simplicity. The songwriters weaved a story of heartbreak and real love. George Jones was the perfect voice for this song. This song will make you cry (man or woman) every time if you have any soul, any feelings at all.
Such an old school country classic. George Jones is a country legend. This is when they wrote their own songs, and music came from the heart. You've just listened to one of the most famous country songs ever written.
George Jones was one of my Daddy's favorite country singers. He loved this song. George Jones came to be known as No Show Jones because of not showing up to his concerts. I got to see George Jones in concert. I felt like my Daddy was sitting right there with me and my husband at the concert. My Daddy passed away in 1995. It was around 2000 when I saw him in concert.
Oh you hit the Gold mine u let the possum loose George Jones one of the greatest of all time when you go through his catalog music there’s so many great stories and songs one-of-a-kind
Tear in my beer country is hard to beat, George Jones is a icon in country music. He stopped loving her today is a classic,, the man in the song died of a broken heart.
My parents were high school sweethearts. This was my Dad’s favorite song. He died first from cancer. We played this at his funeral because he loved Mama till he died. You got it right. Every time I hear it, I see their enduring love.
Nailed it. Good job. As others have said, many Reactors get that its a tragic love story but dont connect the dots that he stopped loving her because he died. Lost the woman. Never got her back. Either drank himself to death or comitted suicide over the pain of not having her. "We all wondered if she would come." (To his funeral. She did. To pay her respects. Church gossip about his painful death waiting for her.) They placed a wreath upon his door. (The door of his casket). Soon they'll carry him away. He swore he'd love her till the day he died. Then, he stopped loving her today. The story/song is told from the perspective of an old friend to the dead man after his friends services. Great and very deep song. George was one hell of a singer/story teller. He himself had a life marked by grey clouds. Im 53. My parents listened to George loudly in our house from late 70's - mid 80's. There has never been a moment of my life where i wasnt aware George battled his own demons. Namely, alcohol. Due to fame and fortune i can see where alcohol may not have been the only vice. But i dont know for sure. It was always a special night when George walked on stage. He was 1 hell of a performer and personality. But there was always a bit of pain when considering the man you were watching. You could feel it was looming there. Could be urban myth but rumor for 40yrs has been that he once got a DUI on a riding lawnmower. Apparently taking it to a store to buy more beer or booze. Thats been a pretty big story for decades.
You got it on the first time. Excellent. So many people miss the point. The song is epic and add George Jones… this is a true classic. You said he looks like he has seen some stuff…. That is an understatement. His life was a Country Western song incarnate.
I can’t hear this without crying. My mom had NPD and was unable to love another person. My dad loved her dearly. They divorced in 82 and he passed in 2011. And he did love her til the day he died.
My Grandfather used to sing this song all the time around the house. When he passed, at the funeral, it stayed on repeat in my mind. I think of him often, and when I think of him, I think of this song as well. And...you got it right!
A black wreath on the door used to signal that someone in the home had died.

You were pretty much spot on! Ol George is the King of Country. I remember when first understood that song.
I'm 41 now, but I've thought this was the best song of all time since I was really young.
I'm so glad you understood the meaning of this song. No other reactors do.
George Jones was a legend. So many hits “The Race Is On, If Drinking Don’t kill me, White Lighting”. And there is plenty more. Such a talented singer.
Wow, you got it right, the opening line was He said I'll love you till I die. And so he did!
Mr. Jones lived a hard life! His wife, Tammy Wynette was also a singer and together they had some great hits! Fabulous reaction!
love him and this song.. when people realize what this is about their mouth drops.. sad but beautiful..
Thank you soooo much for reacting to GEORGE JONES! I am truly excited about your enjoyment of the GREAT country artists/singers!❤❤❤
This is often considered the best Country Music song ever. The ultimate heartbreak song. Welcome to real life.
You are exactly right. Country music is the best.
George was my favorite singer. Such a great voice. He was a legendary country singer for about 50 years.
George Jones = one of the Kings of country music
Such an old school country classic. George Jones is a country legend. This is when they wrote their own songs, and music came from the heart. You've just listened to one of the most famous country songs ever written.
Before i hit play. Gonna say it now. I know this song and what it was about. If this makes me cry again for the 103rd time😂.
You got it, my friend. You got the idea of the song. Well done.
Hand s down, the greatest Country song ever written.
First line: He said I’ll love you til I die.
😭it’s that real love

Why do I cry every time. He said I'll you til I die, right from the start.
Me too. Every darn time
The most profound beautiful story song ever written
Tear in my beer country is hard to beat, George Jones is a icon in country music. He stopped loving her today is a classic,, the man in the song died of a broken heart.
It's a wreath on the door, typically in black flowers.. no matter how many times I hear this song, it brings tears.
If you liked this one. Another great song of George Jones is titled Who is gonna fill their shoes.
...yup...ofcorse
Need to do this one!
The Possum. Best love song ever written. I get chills every time I hear it.
This is my childhood. Song of my parents. Long dead now. Miss them both.
I can’t hear this without crying. My mom had NPD and was unable to love another person. My dad loved her dearly. They divorced in 82 and he passed in 2011. And he did love her til the day he died.
...seriously breaking my heart...get it❤to you
The Grand Tour.
Whose Gonna Fill Their Shoes.
Both are incredible also.
George had so many great songs. Got to see him back in 99.
This is probably the best country song of all time
When George recorded this he told the record exec's YOU'LL NEVER SELL THIS MORBIB SONG and became the #1 country song of all time
Dude. This is my first time watching you. I ♡ George Jones, and I can't believe how accurate you described him and this song. Wow. Just wow.
He was one of the greatest singers ever
My Grandfather used to sing this song all the time around the house. When he passed, at the funeral, it stayed on repeat in my mind. I think of him often, and when I think of him, I think of this song as well. And...you got it right!
George Jones was a masterful storyteller.
Sorry about your mom. Thank you for sharing about your parents' love.
