When I think of country, this is what I think of; Great storytelling, great vocals, and authenticity! I loved the richness in his vocals and I can't wait to hear more from him and dig into the world of country music! The storytelling on this tune is UNREAL! What country song should we listen to next?
Hurt by Johnny Cash, you might cry over that one.
@@oliviadriver1362 We actually checked that out here on the channel not too long ago! On our homepage look under the playlist ‘Solo Artists.’ Or you can probably type it in the search bar on the channel! Thanks for hanging out!
Try Johnny Cash doing "Out Among the Stars" a great story line with a surprise at the end too.
A series of 3 related songs by Marty Robbins: "El Paso," "Feleena," and "El Paso City." Marty is also renowned for his story-telling tunes.
I listened to all styles of music and go through stages of what I like best sometimes. The only thing I can't bring myself to listen to is rap. There were a ton of great country singers and so much for you to explore. Patsy Cline is a journey all on it's own. Dolly is fantastic - saw her live and she was amazing. LeAnn Rimes, Lee Ann Womack, Lorrie Morgan, also Anne Murray. Males like Travis Tritt, Randy Travis, Ricky Van Shelton, Steve Wariner, Kris Kristofferson, Kenny Rogers. Hope you enjoy your journey through the music.
George said at the time that he didn't think the song would be a hit 'cause its so damned sad. But George didn't realize his voice conveyed the emotions of love lost that people related to.....#1 hit
By MANY accounts, the best Country Song ever written done by an all time best performer. The older artists are all gone now but their music still lingers on in the hearts of all true Country fans. AND, country music do tell a story, almost always. Bluegrass, perhaps not quite as much. I would recommend and am still hoping to get a review from someone who'll listen to Johnny Cash's version of Out Among the Stars. It also has that too frequent Country plot twist. Thanks for the review, I really enjoyed it.
The first line of the song is "He said I'll love her till I die". The rest of the song explains how he did indeed do just that.
That’s awesome!
Yep. Came full circle to the opening line. I remember when I first heard and understood this song. I love watching the reactions when newcomers hear it & you see them processing the emotions and then ... Aha! Great songwriting indeed.
I’m so proud of you that you got it
"Choices" holds a painful place in my heart...
George Jones like all but once. His voice and manner using it will never be again.
The best voice in country music R.I.P.
George Jones is the GOAT of country. George Strait is King of country. King George 👑
Beautifully sung by George Jones. Love the melody and lyrics. One of the most heart-wrenching 'country story' songs ever imo. Even so, I watch it from time to time because it's so moving and well performed. Have been reading in the comments that many think this song ended on a positive note. That's so surprising! I guess some folks are able to hear what they want to hear.
Such a beautiful song indeed! ❤️
They say this is the best country song of all time
No matter how many times I hear this song it gives me goosebumps ❤
#1 Best country song ever written! And the Possum...no words necessary!!!
Thanks!
Thank you!! I truly appreciate your generosity! It means more than you know! ❤️
Its been said that when George Jones sings, the audience cries, the band cries and the roof starts leaking. Waylon Jennings once said that if we could all sound like we wanted to, we'd sound like George Jones.
I remember Hoss saying that. And given that he himself had one of the finest voices ever to draw breath, that was high praise.
I love your take on country music. It has been said that country music is nothing more than three cords and one really good story. It's that simple.
Listen to George Jones Who's gonna fill their Shoes
Alan Jackson sang this at George Jones' funeral. Not a dry eye in the place. I can't watch the video without shedding a tear or two, but it is such a beautiful tribute.
I bet that was quite emotional!
@setonhillstudios you are 1 of the few reactors that got the story correct that his friend passed away. Thanks for the reaction. Chris Stapleton is a huge “Country” star right now. I think you’ll enjoy his music! Please react to Chris’s “2021 CMA Awards “Cold”. It’s 🔥! He won Grammys,CMA’s, etc for it! He’s more soul,R&B,Outlaw Country! He’s a great songwriter, guitarist & has an incredible voice! Thanks!
Thanks for the recommendation and hanging out! Have a great one! 😁
I can’t believe how many people miss the meaning of this song. This isn’t about a husband and wife. It’s about a man who loved a woman who left him that he couldn’t get over. He kept old love letters, kept thinking she’d come back someday she never did and he stopped, loving her the day he died. It’s right in the lyrics.
He said, "I'll love you till I die"
She told him, "You'll forget in time"
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
But he still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again.
His friends weren’t even sure if she would show up to the funeral
You know, she came to see him one last time (ooh)
Ah, and we all wondered if she would (ooh)
And it kept runnin' through my mind (ooh)
"This time he's over her for good"
You GOT IT
Many don't get the wreath thing. As many don't do that any more. Or they don't really listen to the words.
Vern Gosdin’s “Chiseled In Stone” is another classic tearjerker.
Awesome! Appreciate the suggestion and thanks for hanging out!
My wife passed almost 7 years ago. This song is my life
So sorry for your loss…
My fear is losing music.😢 it's a part of our soul!!!😱
@ffc303 music is a big part of my life
@@warrenburlingame1172 🥰
This kind of story telling is emblematic of the best of country music. Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Tom T. Hall, The Statler Brothers, Kenny Rogers, Roger Miller, Merle Haggard and so many others are phenomenal storytellers with incredible songs from funny to tragic and everything in between.
Appreciate all the suggestions! Can’t wait to dig into some more country soon!
@@setonhillstudios The Statler Brothers are my personal favorites. "We Got Paid by Cash" is their tribute song to Johnny Cash who gave them their break into music. He greatly influenced their songwriting and musical style though they did develope their own style that no one else in country music had or sounded like. They toured with him for over 8 years before they went out on their own. They stayed loyal friends to Johnny and his wife, and he to them. I think you would like that song. They remain to this day, some 20 years after retiring, the most awarded act in the history of Country Music and are known as The Entertainers on and off the Record. They had tv specials, a tv show for 7 years, and 40 years of albums and tours after leaving Johnny. They were funny, highly entertaining, and put on great shows! They did funny songs, songs with clever turns of phrase, heartbreak songs, gospel songs, patriotic songs and more. With the exception of about 3 songs from the years they recorded albums under Johnny's label they never did the bar songs or drinking songs which is what makes me love them more than most country singers. Much of their music is nostalgic and that's always a great place to be. I hope you'll check them out. They are legends!
Old Country is the real thing!
Shewee! Absolutely loved this one! Thanks for watching!
George Jones was and still is the definition of country music in every way ❤️👍
George Jones was known as the “King of Country” for decades. But he started out doing rockabilly and was known as “Thumper” Jones. He had some awesome rock songs before becoming the standard bearer for Country! You must hear his early version of “White Lightning”!!!!! His song about the original Country Stars he grew up idolizing is called “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes?” is a must hear.
Oh wow! Definitely have to check some of that out. Appreciate it! 😄
Seeing the great man perform live 3 times accounts for 3 of the best gifts of my life.
Like many, a troubled soul. However, his gift of communication through song was truly George's salvation. A once in a century talent.
So much greatness in Country Music!
Touching on some golden stuff now, along with jerry lee being my favorite country singer, George's Jones is a very close second. Another great one to check out is "Grand Tour" great vocals
The first slow dance i had with a guy, was to this song...lol. Truly a masterpiece in describing heartbreak, the Possum was country music royalty. A big part of the mystique that is/was 'outlaw country'...
I absolutely love it when someone listens to this song for the first time and gets it!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for swinging by the channel!
Song gives me chills.
I've listened to this so many times over the decades I've lost count of how many times and every single time I cry like it was the first time. George could reach your heart and thanks to recorded music he still can. For a more upbeat side to George, you might want to check out "White Lightening". Thanks for sharing this George Jones moment.
George Straight is the King of Country. George Jones is a Legendary Country Icon. He is one of the Forefathers, and helped shape Country music into what it is (or was. I agree with your comments about some of todays "country" music).
To those of us who were young adult country fans in the 1960s, George Jones was King. To my parents Hank Senior was King.
Loved this
Hank William Jr dinosaur is a song that doesn’t get many reactions. Quite possibly my favorite song ever
Aaron Neville made a Country Music album and did George Jones’s song THE GRAND TOUR. Aaron is someone you should check out. The harmonica in HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY is played by the genius Charlie McCoy. Charlie plays over 50 instruments.
Ascending strings in this song are well done.
Yessss! 🔥🔥
George was my father's favorite artist and this was his favorite song, he said that this was how he felt about my mom and wanted it played at his funeral...and in June it was. This song ALWAYS brings me to tears especially now. Thanks for this reaction, my dad would love to know that younger people are discovering GJ.
So sorry for your loss! 🙏🏻 This is such an amazing song and even through I just discovered it, I have been listening to it constantly lately! Glad that I finally gave country music a chance because I am loving it! ❤️
@@setonhillstudios Thanks again, George was married to Tammy Wynette for years and they did duets as well as having their own careers, you should check her out, her song D.I.V.O.R.C.E was big. OR Loretta Lynn's coal Miner's Daughter which had a movie by the same title. All with good storylines! Keep up the great job.
@@jimj.3086 I covered “Coal Miners Daughter” her on the channel a few days ago! Been on a Loretta Lynn kick here lately! 🔥
@@setonhillstudios he was my dad's favorite too
When considering All Time Great vocalists. No matter what genre you're into, or what your cultural influence has been, a good voice penetrates. For me George Jones is one of the all time GREAT vocalists. Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Perry Como, Righteous Brothers, Conway Twitty, Bing Crosby, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves had voices that will never be lost to time. They will be heard long after we're all gone. As close to Immortality as someone could hope for.
Enjoyed the reaction.
You got it! The friend died, so he finally stopped loving the woman. Now you need to listen to Randy Travis’ beautiful “ Three Wooden Crosses” and see if you can get it. Most people think too hard and over-analyze, but I think you’ll catch on. The lyrics and paying attention are everything in a Country song.
Rip George Jones ❤️🕊️
❤️
George jones is the greatest country singer of all time
You pretty much nailed new country. New country uses specific beats and words to "sound" like country.
You got it exactly what the song is about.
Best country song of all time.
It was pretty great!
Classic George! You need to check out the “Possum” (George’s nickname) do “I Don’t Need Your Rocking Chair”! You’re gonna love it!
George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Old “Possum” was the absolute GOAT of Country music. There never was one like him and there will never be again. He was the Country singer’s Country singer. Every male Country singer wanted to sound like him. His voice sounds like fresh-poured whiskey, so warm, smooth and kind of smoky. Just glorious. He was nicknamed “Possum” way back in the day when he wore a crew cut. With the crew cut, the long, straight nose and close-set eyes, he did look very much like an opossum. LOL! He loved the nickname and kept it.
In the South when someone in the house dies they put " A wreath " on the door. Not all do it but some still do.
Great reaction! I'm so glad you are one of the few that understood the song, right away.
She left him and he desperately loved her until the end. This song floored me the first time I really listened to the lyrics. He was at his best when he was singing with Loretta Lynn imo.
Loretta Lynn did duets with Conway Twitty. George did his duets with Tammy Wynette. (his ex-wife)
George said when he first heard this song, he didnt want to record it, said it was way to sad, but it became one of his biggest hits, i love your reactions lol to funny
Thanks so much! That’s wild he didn’t want to do it! Glad he changed his mind!
Ole Possum! Yesss.....☘️🇺🇲
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for hanging with us!
Listen to his "Grand Tour".
FINALLY someone gets it. Noone gets the song. The beginning verse explains it.
This is basically the life of my uncle 😢 He loved a beautiful woman who walked away, he said he will love her till he dies and he did. Yes my dad wondered if she would attend the funeral and she did. This song always makes me Realize the pain of loving someone who stopped loving you and you are not built like that and can't just stop loving you. ❤
Wow!
Funny thing, George Jones was hesitant to record this song because he thought it was too corny and too maudlin. He thought people would hate it, but it became one of his biggest hits. I could listen to George Jones 24/7. So glad you got the twist!
You got it!!!
Dang, loved your honest reaction! Country always have stories and tear inducing songs! Peace from Northern Michigan!
So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the kind words! Definitely have to keep exploring the country world more! Have a great one! 😁
98% of RUclips reaction channels completely miss that the guy died and that’s why “He stopped loving her today”. 🙄 It’s unbelievable. Many are happy at the end because he was finally able to get over her. 😂
🤣😂 Glad I was able to catch it! Such a great song for sure! Thanks for watching!
How could they get it wrong? He tells you they put a wreath on his door and are going to carry him away.
This is the greatest country song of all time
You did a great job on this reaction. George Jones was amazing.
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed!
Great Reaction 👍🙏💯😎🇱🇷🇱🇷
You young folks gotta listen more ,every thing you think your going tru has been written,a thousand times.
You Got it !!! All his songs are special !!!
"Authentic" - You nailed it
Chris Stapleton ❤
Well, you got this about as fast as I've ever seen. Lots of reactors miss the whole thing. Great performance, and worthy of a subscription.
Loved this song and amazing storytelling! Thanks for the sub and swinging by! Have a great one!
First line of song-- he said he'd love her till he died!
It’s seems he did! 😳 Great storytelling!
On your observation about traditional country vs contemporary country, check out "Murder On Music Row" by George Strait and Alan Jackson.
Awesome! Really appreciate the suggestion and thanks for hanging out!
Yes 👍
Although I didn’t think I liked country music as a kid, my Momma played Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton for me. Old school country has a purity which is so lovely! George Jones is a legend! Thank you for sharing young man!
😽🎶
Glad you enjoyed!
❤
Hey man, I'm late catching this reaction from you. This is a really great song by Mr. Jones, one of his biggest hits in a stellar Country music career. A song that he didn't even want to record, he had to be talked into doing it, he said that he didn't even know how to sing the song and had to basically be coached daily, by his producer, as how to perform it in the studio , as you can see, it all worked out well as this is often described as Country's greatest song ever. You should delve a bit more into classic Country music from the 1960s to the 1980s, there's some really great music from those years.
He said I'll love her till I die. She told him you'll forget in time
She left him early on but he couldn't let go till the day he passed.
so many people don't get it - say she died, or he found someone else, or anything else. i don't even know how they come up with some of it, but you were spot on! you got it in one shot.
The first and last phrases of the song tell it all. "He said, I'll love you till I die." "He stopped loving her today."
Brooks & Dunn: Believe
Based upon my experience, the best country music is all about the story in the lyrics. I'm not much of a George Jones fan, but this is an AMAZING song done in about the most perfect way.
Absolutely!
You got it, great reaction to George Jones, there is another country artist who still play's the classic country music from back in the day, type in Dale Watson On Austin City Limits "I Lie When I Drink", Thank You.
Oh cool! I’ll have to look into him! Appreciate it! 😀
Even when you know the plot twist GJ captivates and brings tears to my eyes.
So true!
This was not George's best performance but this is an incredible song
Gotcha! Thanks so much for swinging by the channel! Can’t wait to hear more from him!
🙏💔George.
Funeral, He stopped loving her, today.😌. Try Red Sovine his song Teddy Bear.
I love to watch reactors light come on when they get it.
Steve you wouldn't believe how many reactors don't get that his friend died. Good job getting it right on first listen. George was going through severe alcoholism while recording this and it took him a year to get it done. George didn't like the song. He said and I quote "Nobodies going to buy that morbid son of a bitch." Next best George Jones song would be "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" and it's an incredible video. Listen to the official on that not live.
They sang this song at George Jones's funeral.
Oh wow! Full circle! 😳
Years ago i had this song on the radio and my sons gf about 16 listened and at the end she said omg he died! And she just cried.
Love the fact that you do alot of the midnight special
Thanks! The Midnight Special is like striking gold! They have so many awesome concerts on there that are just raw and authentic!
If yo9u like the story telling aspect of Country, you should check out Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner's Daughter".
George had that voice alright. So unique in both sound and delivery. Thanks Possum for a treasure trove of great music.
BTW y’all oughta take a listen to Merle Haggard if you haven’t yet. If you enjoy George’s music I bet my bottom dollar y’all will enjoy old Merle too!
Sweet, we’ll have to check him out!
Congrats on getting it the first time.
George Jones died in 2013 and the funeral was at the GRAND OLE OPRY, eulogized in song by his many friends and family. Please check out the videos on RUclips to see Vince Gill and company sing Vince’s song GO REST HIGH ON THAT MOUNTAIN. When Vince first came to Nashville, George took him under his wing. George was nicknamed the Ole Possum and he called Vince Sweet Pea.
Alan Jackson did a fantastic job of this song at Geroge's funeral.
Listen to Brooks and Dunn “Believe “. It’s a tear jerker
I grew up on country in the 50s, 60s, until I heard on tv The Doors and my eyes were opened. I like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, saw them in ‘75 El Paso, Lynyrd Skynyrd, but still go back to country for certain times….
So many great artists you named! This was definitely a pleasant surprise though! Thanks for watching! 😄
Producer Billy Sherrill introduced Jones to the song in 1978 but, according to Sherrill and Jones himself, the singer hated the song when he first heard it. In Bob Allen's biography of the singer, Sherrill states, "He thought it was too long, too sad, too depressing and that nobody would ever play it. He hated the melody and wouldn't learn it." It has been named in several surveys as the greatest country song of all time.
The lesson here is never record a song you hate because you'll be singing it every night for the rest of your life.
I read somewhere that George didn’t want to record this because nobody would listen to that morbid SOB
Window up Above is a good one also
Thanks for the suggestion!
you are correct I cry every time I listen to it, check out red sovines "teady bear"
He does have a super fun song "The Corvette Song".
You need to listen to George's The Corvette Song!! You'll have fun with the lyrics!!❤😂
Thanks so much! 😁
Red Sovine is definitely one you have to check out, especially "Teddy Bear". Tissue warning, though.
Just pause for a moment to recognise George Jones' effortless 3 octave range. Today, singers can't even hold a tune without a computer to help them.
Absolutely...
