  • Full Version of the in's and out's that you need to know to tune your violin properly, and keep it in tune.
    Note: Please pardon my crooked bow arm, I've had a pinched nerve for the last two weeks and can barely feel my right hand. = Hopefully just therapy this time, and not another spine surgery.

    From Tartini I've learned a lot following his advice on the terzi tuoni, the "third sounds", when playing my double stops. To hear that low, resulting sound and make it "click" with its parents, turning even the most dissonant interval into a three-note chord, is a great insight and practice for intonation.

    And also. As what i've observed on my violin... When the climate is humid and cold my violin strings tuned higher or sharper, while the environment is warm or too hot it tuned lower or Flat. This is what my violin normally happened here in south east asia 😆

    always tune UP never down so the string leaves a little tension.
    There's no end to how much you can learn when you keep watching these videos over again.

    Kevin, I had a question. I have a Scherl & Roth violin that's got intonation issues. The bridge is at the correct angle and is aligned correctly. The violin is in great condition and wasn't always like this, but nowadays even when it's tuned perfectly, it doesn't sound right; I have no problems with intonation on any other violins, so I know it's not my playing. What do you think the problem could be?
    Love your videos, by the way. They've helped me immensely over the years

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  4 года назад +3

      I'm a little confused by the two statements: "Scherl & Roth violin that's got intonation issues" + "even when it's tuned perfectly, it doesn't sound right" but here it goes:
      Many of these violins had friction pegs, and if the screw in the peg isn't tight enough they will slip and randomly lower the pitch at inconvenient times. I have seen some fitted with thin/cheap fine tuner tailpieces that would flex and change pitch all the time and the only answer is to replace the tailpiece. I have seen one (that was previously incorrectly repaired) where the neck was loose and when the strings were loosened the neck actually flopped around.
      If, on the other hand, the instrument is perfectly tuned and you just can't seem to make notes that you play in tune sound right: this was a problem with some of their earlier instruments (they were graduated to be able to take a hit from school children, more than make nice pure notes), and the only answer, after you have checked out absolutely everything else, is to re-graduate it, plus, if it's one of the really "unlucky" ones, also add upper corner blocks to it. Also check that the bass bar is still glued in properly, and that you don't have "false" strings.
      Hopefully one of these hits the mark.

      @@kevinleeluthier thanks for your insight, Kevin. The Scherl & Roth was rescued from a pawnshop, so I know nothing about the instrument's age or history. I have a spare tailpiece kicking around; how do I switch them out without the soundpost coming loose? I don't have the tools to reset it

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  4 года назад +3

      As I mentioned before, if everything else has been checked and different strings have been tried, sometimes an instrument really does need re-graduated in order to balance the plates and make everything move properly. Stradivari himself re-graduated a few of his own instruments later in life. The sad part is, re-graduating an instrument like yours, would probably cost more than you paid for it.
      I am considering a series of self-help repair videos for inexpensive student instruments for people who believe they have "nothing to lose" if something goes wrong or their hands slip, etc.. Any comments?

    I play a Viola it is. A student viola but I find it that it stays in tune pretty much as long as I have it in the case and covered. I rarely have to fine-tune it because I find it the way I left it. Is that normal?

    Is your preference if playing alone to tune at 440 or 442 Hz ?

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  11 месяцев назад

      I guess that I'm old fashioned (especially by European standards) and almost always tune at 440.

      Take the string off the way he shows you and put some Peg wax on the Peg then when your tuning it push in as you go. Make sure you wrap the string the way he shows you when you restring your e-string. Keep watching his various videos he shows everything in detail

    Singing "la" with a mi, a siB, a sol#3 etc. is very disconcerting for those of us who gre up hearing the name of each sound in the d'Arezzo (Non-Anglo) system. Please remember that.
