The Romantic School of Music has unique philosophies about so many things. i.e. The masters demanded so much out their students, that they would often dress formally while teaching their lessons (especially for the more advanced students) in order to show respect TO THE STUDENT because it was always the stated goal that the student would eventually become greater than the master.@@kronoscamron7412

    Hello my friend!
You brought me to tears, I want you to know.
My own father could never teach me anything for lack of patience, But this isn’t what got to me. Because i can very easily forgive him, due to the fact that he had nothing to go by, having never had a real father of his own. His dad actually hung him by his neck once, as a punishment. So... yeah... he brought me up pretty well considering his horrible childhood!
What welled up inside me... then brought the waterworks, was the palpable Love you have for the Violin and Paganini. I truly believe you have taken the time and effort to glean anything and everything you could from what you could find... and accurately pass on the correct teachings of Paganini... had he been able to complete a comprehensive course for mastering the Violin.
That’s big deal! A very big deal!!
I enjoyed every well thought out word you said! Being a Guitarist, I have used tuners since I could first get my hands on one. Long ago... as a Kid learning... we had none... so our ears were well trained to hear everything, or we sounded like garbage! Ha ha🤪🤷🏻‍♂️
So... by ear I could tune my instrument accurately, relative to my E string, or any string, even if I had no pitch pipe, tuning fork or piano to go by. It’s a very important skill for everyone to have, in my opinion... of course... bringing you closer to the Heart of your instrument. I guess I’m going on about this, because now we as Guitarists are spoiled by having amazing tuning devices we had never dreamed of decades ago! I would be willing to bet there are Guitarists who have played for years, who would be hard pressed to tune their instrument by ear, these days. Lol🤦🏻‍♂️ The sadness of it all! 😉
You may think we as Guitarists don’t need to do much after that... having frets to help us... but no! If our bridge is not intonated correctly, we can still play out of tune, anyway. So... contrary to what some believe... we have to get a handle on the subject very tightly... even with frets! 🤔 👂🏻👈🏻
To get back on topic... the strobe tuner, is a fantastic idea for training ones ear and fingers while learning! I have been playing my Violin and trying to develop a relationship with it... and will happily make use of this technique, in order to speed up my advancement.
So... thank you for once again helping me to better enjoy my already awesomely Zen experience of learning with my beautiful new Violin.
If i could, i’d send it off to you, to give it a going over, for better tone, action and so on.
But... it’s not super bad as is. At least it meets all the basics. Solid wood, spruce top plate, maple ribs and back... with ebony fingerboard and tuning pegs. I have noticed my E string sounds a little off and may need parchment on the bridge. Not ringing as it should, i think.
Ok... more than enough blabbing from my end... but you got me going! Ha ha... sorry you had to pay the price for inspiring me again! 🧐
You are the absolute best, My friend!
Thank you very very much for all that you do! ! !
    Proudly Your youtube student,
    Charles Edward DeArmon

You were the one that first got me started and interested in learning how to play. I could listen to you all day and will never forget the first time I heard you on how to use the bow. I followed your advice for days :-) Thank you very much

I bought a Mandolin to help me visualize the note locations on the violin fingerboard. Being a guitar player, I have become greatly reliant on frets, so my intonation on the violin is challenging.
I have fine tuners on all strings (I couldn't get it in tune otherwise) and use an electronic tuner.
I have a Peterson Strobo-Tuner in my guitar pedal board, and I have that App on my phone.
I never thought of getting the clip-on one to put on the scroll of my violin to help me practice intonation, that's a good idea.
I'm going to do that from now on.
I think you make really good points about the disctracitons of the elements of technique affecting our ability to hear our own intonation.
I appreciate your taking the time to post this information, I will study it.

    Outstanding Video!!!
I'm headin' out tomorrow, to get a StroboPLUS tuner. I have been wishing, every day, to have a tuner that works. I took old-time fiddle lessons for 17 years, and my Instructor had some type of "strobe tuner", in which the lines stopped rotating when the pitch was proper. I am VERY EXCITED to have viewed this video.
I was very, very impressed, with the start of this video. I remember well, being so concerned about HOW to play, that I didn't have time to LISTEN. Don't worry, though. My Instructor ripped into me for that, and I eventually learned HOW to listen.
You are absolutely correct, that EVERYTHING ELSE has to be perfect, for the fingers to know where to go. That's NOT OBVIOUS! After spending thousands of hours, tryin' to get my fingers to behave (every day, slow as can be, light as can be, nuthin' worked), I FINALLY got my fingers to behave, by BOWING CORRECTLY! Moral of the story: The ENTIRE BODY is a UNIT. Every body part, talks to EVERY OTHER body part, ALL THE TIME!
    Outstanding video!

Hi Kevin, hope all is well. I had perfect pitch, BUT at my age now I'm lucky I can hear these days. I was tested by Marvin Hamlisch and his dad in 1963 ( or there about). Marvin was about 18 then. There is only one video on here about his father Max and only one comment that I wrote that tells the story. It was for piano/ accordion lessons. I gave that up after the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan in 1964. I got a job with a guy that fixed musical instruments for schools and bought a Gretsch guitar with my earnings.
On my last comment I mentioned my favorite violin of the upper end models that you made. I meant the one with Rapunzel and I didn't know you named it the "Tangled". That's the instrument that I meant. It's phenomenal.( to say the least). Also I have a few videos that were recorded on the Key Biscayne Florida radio station, I still do the show now and then but they don't film them all. I have about 6 or so on here.
I'd like to mention Mozart's Variations on that theme that you played ( if I may). It's "Ah, Vous Dirai-je, Maman". and it's fantastic! We know it as "Twinkle, Twinkle. Little Star".
Please stay safe in these crazy times and thanks for the wonderful vid. ( As Usual)!!

Tom Muckian I’m all for frets as a guitarist, but they will always be imperfect. Nothing ever tunes just right like your fingers being in the exact spot for a note to be in tune with a harmonic series. Straight frets will never be in just the right spot. The player needs to do it in real time.

Hey, Tom I did the same thing out of frustration. I installed micro thin low profile wire frets on my acoustic violin and I never looked back. Less to think about. I just play now and have fun without worrying about intonation. I can just concentrate on my bowing and vibrato (yes you can do vibrato on a fretted violin). I don't want or have have the time and years (I'm 55) to get good. I want to play now and play my favorite songs. The way I accomplished it in a short time was fret my violin. "Play smarter not harder" Oh and all those naysayers out there. I did a blind test with 5 of my violin musician buddies. Had one guy play my fretted violin and his fret less violin and had other 4 turn their backs and not one could tell the difference and neither does the casual listener.

Hello Kevin. Thanks for your videos, they are always insightful and unique and offer the kind of perspective that, in my experience, only comes from someone who is a master of what they do.
A quick question - I'm moving from an irish tenor banjo (you probably know it has the same tuning as a violin) to the violin. I use a Snark clip on tuner for the banjo. Have you tried the Snark for the violin? It has visual feedback - coloured bars for sharp or flat - and a microphone or vibration detection (for noisy environments like pubs). However, I am not sure it has the violin tuning that you speak of in the video. Just wondering if you thought I could get away with the Snark, or would still recommend the Peterson. Many thanks, and stay safe.

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  4 года назад

The snark tuner is one of the many tuners that I have tried, and it is the same as so many: If you play very slowly, and you are not after truly fine tuning your ears, go ahead and use it. It will get you started. But, if you really want to see your intonation accurately displayed, and fast enough to really do some good at placing your fingers at the proper intervals, the Peterson really is the difference from night to day. Especially the big one (StroboPlus HD).

    • @JimboSRP

I have tried so many tuners and apps, that I have lost track. Most of them work pretty well, yet none of them have had the response time and clarity of the Strobo-tuners. At least for now. I just don't bother looking unless the apps/manufacturer states the accuracy is one cent or less, the actual response time in milliseconds, and the display "tickles" me. If you can't afford a Peterson, I understand completely. I've been there, but they really are the best.

Hi, just wanted to start this by saying that it is admirable that you are put such effort into helping others in the pursuit of learning the violin. Much appreciated! In regards to the specific topic in question here, I have a few questions. As you have stated, it is uncommon to find electronic tuners that operate in a mode suitable for violin (presumably Just Intonation here) and it is great that these tuners allow you to tune the open strings to perfect fifths; however, are the rest of the scale degrees based on Pythagorean tuning when operating in this "violin" mode? Does it have different modes for adjusting to the need for intonation based on melodic playing versus harmonic playing, or does it stay in one tuning system? Another major question that I've had that I've found surprisingly little detailed information about is the violin tuning in relation to other instruments (specifically ones that adhere to Equal Temperament instead of Just Intonation such as pianos): is it common to adjust the tuning of the violin to better match the Equal Temperament instruments, or is it typically just ignored as being close enough? Would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this.

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  4 года назад

The simplest way to answer is:
In standard/default mode the tuner is programmed for the "equal temperament" tuning of "almost all" pianos.
In the VIOLIN MODE G3, D4, and E5 (the open strings of the violin) are modified to become perfect fifths in relation to the open A string (A4).
This is because the tone of a violin sounds so much better when tuned to perfect fifths, - and the soloist will almost always end up
matching the pitch of the piano or orchestra with the placement of their fingers since they rarely play the open strings, except for double stops.
It is a theoretical compromise, and in rare cases some of the greatest performers will have the piano tuned to match the violin perfectly,
yet it has been the accepted reality and common compromise of the soloist for hundreds of years.
