    I know that this video may seem like a bit much, but before replacing violin strings, it really is important to know that EVERYTHING IS RIGHT! Otherwise you may damage or break the next string as soon as it is tightened!
    Also, The Secrets of Paganini = how he broke his strings.
    If this video was helpful, please tell a friend.
    Special Note: I gained even more respect for Paganini after making this video. If you decide to purposely break strings, it is dangerous; for you and for your instrument, and don't try doing it with solid steel strings or without a sharpened steel ferrule or you just might end up with a broken violin lying on the floor.

    DEAR Mr.Lee have just played a very Russian sounding ballad. I have just now incorporated the 6 mm gap between bow stick and hairs. I m using a rather heavy bow weight wise. It's as if the violin is teaching me now, rather than me fighting her. I am flabbergasted! That simple trick has put me over the top.Blessings to you Sir and thank you! Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noel!

    The arching, shape and thickness of a violin bridge can vary a great deal depending upon each instrument and the requirements of the performer. All of the drawings in this video represent the "average" bridge shape for a classical violinist playing upon a fine instrument.

    The next "how to" video is now online; what Paganini told his students was his greatest secret. Please let me know if you are disappointed or satisfied. "Abracadabra" and "hocus pocus" will never make a great musician, only knowledge and the right kind of practice. Thanks again.

    I have plans for a video on burnishers, but for now:
    I make burnishers from discarded (machine shop) bandsaw blades about the diameter of each string ( be careful). The G and D are usuall the same diameter,so there are usually 3 burnishers per set. Cut the blade 4" long with an abrasve wheel or a grinder, then grind off the teeth and smooth the edges.
    Finish by grinding the smooth long edge into a radius, then polish the radius slightly smaller than the string radius on a whetsone/waterstone.

    • @adelkharisov
      @adelkharisov Год назад

      Are burnishers produced by some tool companies like Hosco or Stewmac that make flat nut slotting files?
      I personally use needles to burnish slots and first layer of graphite on my mother’s violin.

    The worst bit about breaking a string mid performance (and I've done it a couple of times) is that usually the other strings then go out of tune so it becomes double trouble to keep going. These days I keep a spare violin handy!

    When he broke all but one string, how did he keep the sound post from falling?

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  6 лет назад +4

      The accounts handed down are vague, yet I have accomplished it by loosening the strings and pushing the soundpost out far enough for it to stay in place when the E, A, and D strings are broken. The sound is not optimal, but I believe Paganini was after the "show" more than anything else during these performances. As another note: the bridge usually shifts way out of place, when I've tried it, and the G string way out of tune. But with a little "stick-um" under the bridge feet and a little more practice????

    • @cjc4765
      @cjc4765 6 лет назад

      I believe that! He was after the show .He could also have used some form of stickum under the soundpost itself that could easily be removed( possible or no)? This is a fascinating topic!!
      Paganini ( so they say) was a money monger and hated paying for anything. From what I've heard they created a word using his name that was synonymous with being ( let's say (being kind) on the frugal side?
      Who can say for sure if it's true or not, it certainly seems so.

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  6 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't rule anything out, and I'm sure that he tried a couple different ways before getting everything reliable enough to perform it on stage. I haven't pursued it further, because it just doesn't seem to fit my character. Yes, even though Paganini lost huge amounts of money gambling and on his failed casino, when it came to his day to day expenses, especially tipping, he was accused, many times, of being "cheap." Sadly, but true; no one's perfect.

    My violin is buzzing, and I think it's because my bridge isn't snug tightest on the fingerboard side on my brand new John Juzek violin. Can you help me with this problem?

    • @kevinleeluthier
      @kevinleeluthier  9 лет назад +5

      Until you have seen this operation in person, or until I make a video specifically about this, you may be better to take your violin to a competent repair shop. There is a lot more to it than you might imagine, but here are the basics:
      The repairman will make sure that this really is where the buzz is coming from by getting the string to buzz, then pushing down on the string as it crosses over the bridge on the fingerboard side. Note: a string can also buzz if the groove is too wide and does not snugly hold the string.
      The repairman will also verify the different string heights above the fingerboard, and if they can all be lowered slightly. (If strings are too low they will buzz against the fingerboard and if this is the case, you will need a new bridge.)
      If the strings are high enough, the offending groove is filed with a fine file with a radius smaller than the string to the angle shown in this video (down on the tailpiece side) and the groove is then burnished and graphited as is shown in this video.
      After this, the other three strings usually also need re-filed, burnished and graphited in order for them to still have the proper relationship.
      I wish you the best,
      Kevin Lee Luthier

    If you think Paganini relied on a perfect build to play perfectly then you’re out of your mind. His type of playing requires years of intense practice so much so that he could make a POS sound like heaven. He’s able to adjust microtones on the fly. Only Hendrix is comprable to this but P makes H look like a rookie.

      While sharpening the edge of a ferrule (like knowing the secret of a magic trick) may seem simple after you know about it, almost no one did know how Paganini could break his strings one after the other at just the right moment, and it helped him put on a much more dramatic show than anyone else. There are many who consider Paganini the world's first "Rock Star."
      My next video will include what Paganini himself said was his "greatest" secret, and if you play the violin, viola or cello, I don't believe that you will be disappointed.

  • @mellissadalby1402
    @mellissadalby1402 4 месяца назад

    I must be simple, I see no good reason to deliberately break a string. I would bet the sudden shock (in the sudden change of tension on the neck and body) is not particularly good for the violin.
