I agree, David. Gordon has a vocal quality which is calming. Together with this wonderful music and his co-star, Kathryn Grayson, he shows his versatility and musicality. Sadly, many today cannot appreciate romantic sentiment, everything seems harsher and brash. Thank you for taking time to comment. I appreciate your thoughts!

For reasons I do not understand, when young, I was not a fan of Kathryn Grayson, today, I am all in. She does things with her voice no one did. And she was a favorite among the leading men of her day, Gordon MacRae and Howard Keel ... two of my favorites. Her work lives on in films.

What a magnificent voice Gordon had. He could have been one of the great operatic baritones had he chosen that path.

The one I believe could have had a great career as an operatic baritone was Harve Presnell (Paint Your Wagon, The Unsinkable Molly Brown), who chose the Broadway route and also performed straight dramatic roles.

Here are the lyrics of the song if anyone is interested (or would like to sing along with):
    My desert is waiting;
    Dear, come there with me.
    I'm longing to teach you
    Love's sweet melody.
    I'll sing a dream-song to you,
    Painting a picture for two:
Blue heaven and you and I,
And sand kissing a moonlit sky.
    A desert breeze whisp'ring a lullaby,
    Only stars above you
    To see I love you.
Oh, give me that night divine
And let my arms in yours entwine.
    The desert song calling,
    Its voice enthralling
    Will make you mine.
Blue heaven and you and I,
And sand kissing a moonlit sky.
    A desert breeze whisp'ring a lullaby,
    Only stars above you
    To see I love you.
Oh, give me that night divine
And let my arms in yours entwine.
    The desert song calling,
    Its voice enthralling
    Will make you mine.

    Iubito, desertul meu te așteaptă;
Draga mea,, vino acolo cu mine.
    Tânjesc să te învăț
    Melodia dulce a iubirii.
    Te va face a mea.

Night is the ruler of love
And I bow my head to your command
Night though you hold me in your spell
    I know so well
My fate is in your hands.
    Long live the night
    In all its splendour
    Long may the moon
    Light up the blue.
    All through the night
    Softly and tender
I'll sing my song of love
    To you.
    Here in my arms
    Let me enfold you
    And as the skies
    Shine from above.
    Tell me you're mine
    And as I hold you
    Long live the night
    In memory of our love.
    [Tony Martin]
    Long live the night
    In all its splendour
    Long may the moon
    Light up the blue.
    All through the night
    Softly and tender
I'll sing my song of love
    To you.
    [Kathryn Grayson]
    When we embrace
    There's no concealing
    You're every dream
    I'm dreaming of...
    [Kathryn Grayson and Tony Martin]
    Before the dawn
    Comes softly stealing
    Long live the night
    In memory of our love.
    (

    Meine Wüste wartet;
    Lieber, komm mit mir dorthin.
Ich sehne mich danach, es dir beizubringen
    Die süße Melodie der Liebe.
Ich werde dir ein Traumlied singen,
    Ein Bild für zwei malen:
Blauer Himmel und du und ich,
Und Sand, der einen mondbeschienenen Himmel küsst.
    Eine Wüstenbrise flüstert ein Schlaflied,
    Nur Sterne über dir
Um zu sehen, dass ich dich liebe.
Oh, gib mir diese Nacht göttlich
Und lass meine Arme in deinen schlingen.
    Das Wüstenlied ruft,
    Seine Stimme ist fesselnd
    Werde dich zu meinem machen.

Once, here in Virginia, at a gathering, someone asked Kathryn Grayson what it was like to sing with Mario Lanza? As much as I like Mario, if I had been there personally, I'd have been mightily tempted to slap the inquirer's face. Kathryn's voice is more than amazing.

She definitely had a melodic operatic voice which never failed to bring something extra special in all her appearances. I like the anecdote!!

A nice vocal tone and the sound was always even. I think, however, that his voice would have been too light for opera. That's not a slam, but just a statement of fact. Some voices are opera voices and some are not. It doesn't make one type of voice better than another, just voices that are best suited to different genres. Sarah Brightman is a fine pop opera or classical crossover singer, but an opera singer she is not, and she has said as much herself. If MacRae had one vocal fault it was that he sometimes had the habit of swallowing the tone so that he sounded like he had a golf ball at the back of his throat. He's not alone in doing this, as many other singers do this. Even some opera singers, such as Jonas Kaufmann do the same.
