On the Front Line With Mexico’s Warring Cartels

- The end of 2021 will mark 15 years since the start of Mexico's “guerra contra el narcotráfico,” a war against drug trafficking that officially began in December 2006, when thousands of soldiers were deployed to topple the cartel terrorizing the state of Michoacán. The war soon spread and plunged the entire country into a downward spiral of violence that continues today.
The current war in Michoacán is between the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel or CJNG, led by a notorious kingpin known as El Mencho, and an alliance of groups known as the United Cartels. Some communities also rely on citizen-led militias to battle the cartels.
VICE News reporter Keegan Hamilton and producer Miguel Fernández Flores traveled to the epicenter of the conflict in Michoacán, meeting cartel members on both sides and seeking to understand if anything will or can change for the better.

imagine making 100's of millions of dollars every year from the drug trade and yet you still find the need to extort and terrorize anyone whose looking to improve their existence through legitimate means....
The United Cartels in Michoacan and most other small "Cartels" in the country make most of their money from extorting, especially cartels in Central and Southern Mexico. Cartels in the North such as the Sinaloa and Tijuana Cartel dont extort because they control the borders which is where all the money is at.
Where did you get that from? A lot of the kidnapping and extersion are done by smaller cartel groups who don’t really get a big income from importing drugs. You will never see the Sinaloa or CJNG cartel extorting people.

This documentary does best that Russian Guy's though his are longer cuts and interesting as well. His channel is called "The People" and those videos were only released within the last month. So it was not "way before". People on his channel criticize Vice as wanting to be like him.

That CJNG commander who’s name was Miguel Ángel Fernández, known as “El M2” was found in a ditch burnt alive or burned after he was killed, i couldn’t find anything identifying what exactly caused his death. You can identify him to the corpse by matching the bracelets on his arm, and his belt. It honestly struck me how charismatic he seemed, you can tell he had morals instilled in him as a youngster, but, money is the route to all evil so that inevitably led to his demise.

As a Mexican, I can't help but feel ashamed when I watch these documentaries. What kind of country have we become? Unfortunately in Mexico there is a deeply rooted drug culture, the most popular Mexican songs of the moment are songs that glorify drug trafficking. Mexico, being a beautiful country, with friendly people, it is truly sad that because of the government the country is falling apart.
Don't be ashamed, It's not your country man, it's just the way some humans are.
Be proud of your nation, there are good and there are bad people in every country. Stay safe :)

As a German, I visited Michoacan several times the past years and I can tell you that it is a beautiful state. But my god, La Familia, CJNG are so brutal, we actually saw dead bodies on a street once. Even as European tourist you feel at unease and in danger. You do not want to cross paths with cartel members even as tourists.

I think it's amazing that journalists can get this close to these kind of things. The cartel truly is horrible in Mexico. Makes me understand how privileged I am to live somewhere where cartels, violence and murder are not a huge issue. My love goes to the Mexican people who have to deal with this. Stay strong folks

We aren't conscious enough, why, because people worship money, they always will. But in México it was never about worshiping money. It was about struggling from the ground to survive and raise your family. And unfortunately have to resort to this to put decent food on the table, take your kids to a fair, buy them decent shoes. I can tell you this from fact. My mom grew up in México and tells me how she used to not have shoes and some days would go without food only milk, slept on dirt floors. Yeah, it still goes on I see. I’m surprised that the CJNG offered to be interviewed rather being known to kill anyone in its path.
CJNG makes a lot of propaganda videos to win over the local people and get them to collaborate. All though it rarely works and they mostly rely on fear and violence to control people.

Sorry, but this is false. I moved here from America a little under a year ago and it's been the absolute best decision I've ever made. Sure the government is corrupt and there are horrible atrocities in certain areas, but to make a sweeping generalization of the entire country as a whole is asinine. There literally are parts of Mexico that are considered the safest places in the entire continent of North America. I appreciate Vice covering stories like this but it's unfortunate that the outside world only gets to see this side of an otherwise amazing country.
I've been fighting for democracy in my state university, which is in a deep crisis, Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit. And it's only the end of the iceberg, there's more to be done and we face the danger of being kidnapped and killed.

Thats " el m-2 " Miguel Angel Fernandez the CJNG commander giving that interview. He is now dead and everyone can see his burnt up corpse online. He said it would "Be worth it to die in this war" and so he did. He actually seems like a pretty cool guy in the interview. Meanwhile he ordered 13 Mexican police to be killed in a famous ambush on a convoy that had the audio recorded as those Police scream for help in Aguililla. Mexico is a LOCO place. The life expectancy for a cartel member is under 5 years. Especially if its CJNG who is at war with the Mexican government and multiple cartels including the most powerful cartel the Sinaloa cartel. CJNG and Los Viagras are friggin brutal and have posted multiple videos of them flaying off their enemies faces and slowly torturing and dismembering their rivals or burning the face off of their enemies. Crazy thing is that with a couple clicks from your mouse you can see horrific torture and murder videos like Ghost Rider or Funkytown. I was shocked and disturbed when my morbid curiosity got the better of me and I watched a couple of these traumatizing videos that go on and on. I think that kind of graphic torture and murder on camera should be illegal to post on the surface web. Imagine our children seeing this kind of graphic and evil gore.
It needs to serve as a reminder of how good we have it in the states and other countries

You sit there, ask questions and just see a person in front of you, but that person has done some of the darkest things a human can do. This reporter has some guts, you have to watch the way you approach them, the way you look at them, the way you talk and act, they are paranoid and could just get rid of you, no cops and no governor will be there to save you.

I was fortunate to know a kind, talented and beautiful young woman who migrated here from Michoacan. Being brought up here in the US I had no clue the extend of the 'why' she wanted to come here. We take safety for granted.
It was not always like this though. The situation in Mexico really took a hard turn around 2006 when Felipe Calderon declared War on the Cartels. The thought was to use the Military against drug gangs because they will be too weak to fight the Military. What Mexico didn't think through is the adaptation of these Cartels. They went from wearing cowboy hats and boots to Militarized killers. The Cartels adapted and with the vast amounts of money they generated, they can buy the best weapons available and recruit from an endless supply of men. Because prior to 2006, things were relatively calm. People fled because the US simply offered better jobs, not necessarily because of safety. I visited my family in Michoacan around 2001, everything was calm and peaceful. There were no Sicarios anywhere. We use to be out late at night, 1am 2am and not a single issue. There is no way in hell I would visit today though. It is way too dangerous, especially the part where my family is from.

I'm from Michoacán but live in LA now. Michoacán and Mexico in general have so much beauty from its people, culture, to beaches. All the corruption and violence overshadows that.

The solution it's not so simplistic.
If they legalize it, cartels would look for something else to make money from. This could include extorting every business or kidnapping. Not that they don’t do it already
@Mexican Doggo I’m not saying that’s going to be their main money maker, but they will most likely increase. I feel like the only way to stop this is to go up in arms and defend ourselves. i used to live in mexcio and 3 of my family members were kidnapped end 2 of them have not been found yet, we moved to the U.S becasue we were constantly getting stopped bye cartels and one time we were in the U.S for something and the day we left some cartel people broke into are house looking for us. One time it was like midnight and my dad heard people outside and he checked and there were at least 6 people carring heavey asault rifles so my dad got his guns and called my uncles so they all drove down to see what was happening, which is dumb because htye could have shot them but insted the cartels just drove of when they saw them. So now when we go back to visit mexico we always have are guns incase something happens and if they try kidnappping us or something else we wont go down without a fight
Is it certain parts? I haven't been to Mexico in over 10 years. I went 3times and it was calm never seen anything. We drove down there too

I heard after you pass the border in Laredo once you start going into the highway of Mexico they stop you and ask for 500 American dollars per person and give you time to pay them otherwise they kill you

Mexico has some of the most beautiful landscapes and places on Earth. It's a damn shame that many of them are blocked off from the world due to this violence.
I also find after watching these documentaries that the majority of Mexican people are friendly, hard working folks who just want peace.
