- Michoacan state is an epicenter of Mexico's violence. While cartels, vigilantes & authorities fight, the population's trapped in the middle. Al Jazeera spent a month on the ground in the state to investigate.

Needs to be seen by all Americans so that they can understand current events. Our mass media is not covering issues in depth like this and I think it's important to understand just how out of control things have become in Mexico.
Excellent point. Michoacan is my state I used to go visit every year growing up. It was so different back then, paradise. Never thought or knew it had become a living nightmare for the locals. With all the migrants coming over, I was under the impression that people were crossing simply to have a better future, aka, illegal crossings. That's what the news covers, but boy was I wrong. This tells a very different story indeed in which asylum should be warranted to all of these poor families who've abandoned their home to avoid cartel execution and make the journey north to simply survive. so heartbreaking
Exactly. This is why military action by the U.S. needs to be taken. Mexican Drug cartels are a terrorist organization.
And why the border needs to be secure by any means necessary!

@@edwelndiobel1567 Oh yeah, working so well with the CIA, DEA, and FBI selling arms to the cartels, corrupt customs officers allowing guns and drugs to pass through the border, and on and on. Great documentary. Those are absolutely abhorrent positions that these people have to live by. The USA and Mexico must create a demilitarized buffer zone along the border where people can live freely without these concerns at least until those threats have been dealt with.
Good for Brazil
That’s super odd to say, I’ve always felt that Brazil is levels above when it comes to actual violence. Mexico is violent but Brazil is extreme, you say it’s concentrated but there’s a lot out there about how if you live there long enough your bound to get robbed at gunpoint or knife
@@jumpy2xstreaming The majority of the Brazilian population lives in urban areas, and this type of violence is an urban phenomenon. This is why you see countless people reporting crimes of this type online, but this does not reflect the country as a whole. The homicide rate in the north of the country is much higher than in the south, and the same happens in Mexico (both are huge countries), but in Brazil the north is poor and the south is more developed, whereas in Mexico it is the opposite, That's why the overall quality of life in Brazil is better.
Violence in Brazil is based on small crimes and in urban areas, that is, you won't die, but it could be that some kid passes by you and pulls your backpack in large centers. In Mexico, it's terrorism, kidnapping, a market financed by the USA that won't change either, unlike Brazil, which has been reducing crime year after year. In 2017 the homicide rate was 29.2 in Brazil and in 2023 18.7. In Mexico, in 2017 it was 22.5 and in 2023 it was 23.5 (remembering that this number could even be higher due to the lack of transparency of the numbers on the part of the Mexican government, as kidnappings and underreporting are not taken into account).
@@Samuel-fo4gv I would have to very much disagree with you, Brazil is not a “better” place to live than Mexico, Brazil is a crime culture country just like Colombia. The people there will never be able to stop robbing and killing no matter what they do, it’s in your culture. But for Mexico there’s parts that are safe, Brazil you guys don’t have anything that’s truly safe just safer than favelas

espero que vos y tu familia siguen estando bien, saludos desde Inglaterra
There’s lots of documentaries like this on the internet (about Mexico and the cartels). So it’s no secret what things are like there (from a government perspective). If you’re going to ‘disappear’, it’s going to happen whilst you’re actually in Mexico making the documentary. And then it’s usually because by kidnapping you, people can demand a ransom.
This documentary was made a while ago so safe to say that nothing bad happened.
This has got to be the best documentary and I’ve seen about 15 on this subject WOW Great reporting
you really got my attention when you said that its the government that can make them disappear. Jee'z.
Such a great, thought provoking video (and comment). A beautiful country, such great culture, yet all we hear (where im from) is the killings, the kidnappings, the drugs, etc.
Well said
Why are you crying? That broke my heart because he knew that his fate was not a rehab but an endless night of torture
dont forget the headshot that he gets if he is lucky
The way those security posed with that guy when taking the photo reminded me of the cartels and how they posed before brutally murdering the people they captured. So no way that guy was going to have it easy after that.
Almost like posing with freshly shot game.
What did he do wrong? Cause he had drugs?
Couldn’t it be for personal use?
@@jtarantula3390 Thats such a naive way of thinking
BE STRONG ENOUGH TO BE HONEST AND KIND
I always wanted to go to Aguililla to see the places my parents grew up. It’s really sad that I’ll never be able to😔
my uncle died from a cartel shooting in mexico
Que triste viejo
Open your eyes, this is what happens when the good people think that ignoring crime will make it go away. As soon as bad things start happening good people must rise and fight back, otherwise it'll be too late.
The government are getting money from cartels so they will never stop them. It supplies US and more with drugs Government happy people are crazy if they think governments are not in on the biggest money maker on the planet.
And who are good and bad people here?
It is to late. Because the government is spent. Corruption has eaten to the centre of power and poisoned it. Now it has spread to the whole country . They need help. SOS ✊☘️
@@1individeo do I really need to answer that?
@@Alicia-BG what I mean is we dont really know who is the bad guy here. Cartels have caused thousands of deaths but did more for the poor mexicans than any government has ever done for them, including the US Gov.
I feel so sorry for the normal innocent people that just want to live in peace. I'm a veteran of the British Army. I felt proud to serve, helping to keep peace and protect those that can't protect themselves. Now I'm just an old man, and believe me, it's so rewarding to show respect and kindness to others.
It feels horrible because of their life storys but it is 10% worse when you actually understand the language and feel the dispare in their voices
Al Jazeera is about the only news I feel I can trust.Good old fashioned reporting .
Heart breaking!! So sad. My heart goes out to all those poor innocent people. I’m a grown man and my eyes got watery seen that poor 17 year old girl and her family having to flee.
She was raped for 3 straight days now pregnant, the cartel is a cancer they are parasites they’re not humans they’re animals
Same here life is just messed up for allot of people and they just have to face it so sad! Old man the pain he must feel in his heart seeing his family sleeping in that tent!
My grandfather lived through the Mexican revolution. He said he tried living peacefully but the government came by and beat him up and afterwards the rebels did the same. He joined the first armed group he found afterwards. In such a situation those who sit on the sidelines are only victims. One must either leave or take up arms.
You are so correct, there is no in between now. With or against are the only two options. Good or evil.
My grandfather from Michoacán was in the Mexican revolution for the feds as a boy because he liked the uniforms. He came to the US shortly after that.

this makes me so sad since I grew up in Michoacán I can’t believe people have to deal with this 😕
Mexico could be the worst of the countries, i admired it, i pray all changes its netizens have peace
In United States is the best place for the bussines of drugs.
Why don't you start by praying for your third world corrupted country first.
@@salvador9288 America is closer, Europe is better.
@@user-qr7ee2cp4y nah.
@@user-qr7ee2cp4y Agreed, Europeans are as big into drugs as the USA is. The cartels already ship massive amounts of drugs to Europe, but obviously like you said, the USA is closer so it gets more drugs due to costs
Heart breaking story brought to us by brave journalist.
That last family broke my heart but the love for each other wins.
You are really brave my man, wish you the best...i like how you confronted the governor, amazing documentary
Such a gorgeous part of Mexico, I traveled here extensively via my motorcycle ten years ago. Now, Jalisco is off limits for me.
I was born and raised in Michoacan. It really saddens me to see the cruel reality and lack of action by the authorities. This was once paradise.

No government or what?
Why did you leave, if it's paradise?

Al Jazeera shame on you for not disguising the innocent family at end. If they are killed I hold you responsible for that!
Al Jazeera only loves MONEY and SENSATIONALISM... They dont have concern for private individuals whatsover... Pretty sure when that lady or her family gets in trouble Al Jazeera would be the first to be there to report that story.... Just another STORY and money for them...
More honor that Israel for sure doe
What the guy says at 16:32 should be a sample in a song
I'm so sad for these kind people!! I would love to live in one of these beautiful villages!! All of that beautiful fruit hanging on those trees!!! Sad!!!
