I remember coming here when I was about 22 years old. I'm from the US but my dad lived in that area so he wanted to show us around. At first it was fine, everything seemed cool. But once the sun starts to set you really feel the tension. We started walking towards the outskirts of Tepito and let me tell you, I have never felt so unsafe in my life. Once I saw that even my dad felt uncomfortable I got scared. Some cops stopped us ( I guess you could tell we were tourists) and told us to leave the area ASAP.

My Mexican friend and roommate would travel to Tepito every few weeks to obtain cheap jeans, aftershave or perfumes for his girlfriend. He also had worked in a bank within Tepito, so he knew the rules and what not to do. Once he asked me to go with him so that we could go to his parents' home in another part of the city afterwards for dinner. Upon arriving he told me to roll up the windows and lock the doors of the car. At each stop sign, we never came to a complete stop. We parked the car in a safer area and walked a few blocks to where we were going. Within seconds at the market, someone walked up to my roommate and demanded money, so my friend gave him a few coins. Not satisfied with the number of pesos, the robber grabbed my friend's necklace. No one said a word to me or even bothered me at all. After the robbery, we bought what we came to buy and left. Once we were far from Tepito, I joked that no one wanted to rob the Gringo wearing a Cruz Azul jersey-- Cruz Azul is the Mexico City's soccer team. When I asked my friend why he didn't try to stop the robbery, he said there were many people watching us at that moment. The part about Santa Muerte explained the scenes where "The Cousins" Leonel and Marco Salamanca, were crawling to the shrine. I always thought it was just a weird personal trait of theirs, but this video put that in perspective and further cements Breaking Bad as one of the best produced shows I have ever seen.
The documentary provides a stark and eye-opening look into the dangerous world of Tepito, revealing the harsh reality of those living under the rule of the "La Union" gang. It's a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by both law enforcement and residents. Thank you for shedding light on this complex issue.
My father was stabbed there. I was born in Mexico City but moved to Arizona at age 8. Later at age 44 I moved to Nezahualcóyotl close to Tepito with people that have business in Tepito. Some of the stories are unbelievable that you would never think about. Cops selling drugs, guns etc. My friend was married to a cop that new that he was selling drugs.

He even said he knows an officer in the army who seizes weapons and then he picks them out and talks about the prices. US is definitely aiding in this drug war with weaponry and allowing drugs to be smuggled into the US. Crazy times. Snowfall series really puts everything into perspective.
It's well known. The ATF was allowing cartel members and associates to walk away with all sorts of guns and weapons in Tucson and Phoenix. Those cartel associates would literally cross back and forth the Arizona-Mexico border, armed to the teeth with American weapons. Wow as someone who is quite "street smart" I must say that the amount of evidentiary value this kind of video provides law enforcement or rivals, etc. is priceless to say the least. I just can't believe how these individuals being filmed tell their stories in such detail like it will help them in any way & they do so without a care in the world, those masks & clothes they wear provide little to no real concealment of their true identities & it's clear that they are certainly captured by the law or killed by rivals, etc. shortly after these interviews, for the most part.
@@greenhillscustomlawncarell1139 if that would work in court then every gang banger would just film a documentary of every crime, also even if it did no document is going to stop a rival's bullets.

Having lived in Mexico for 4 years, in Mexico City no less, my partner at the time (me: American, he: Mexican) absolutely outlawed going to Tepito for any reason at any time. No ifs ands or buts. Even if I was accompanied, too dangerous. And it's wild because you can be in the cathedral or Zocalo and walk a block or two over, and without knowing you've entered a super dangerous place.
Tepito is an ancient neighborhood and where the Aztecs put up their last stand against the Spanish. In fact the street grid is the same since the Aztecs days.
@@anaheimauthentic5099 Was a rough neighborhood even back then and was where the carriers from the adjacent Tlatelolco market stayed, many of them foreigners from other tribes who traveled/carry goods on their backs and walked far distances on foot.
I was there back in 1997. Rode the bus to get back to hotel as we had gotten lost. The size of the gangs were incredible. Had members get on the bus, had no issues at all.
One of the coolest markets I've ever been to. I'm white and have been there several times. No problems what so ever. Everyone I met was nice. The trick is to always be on the move, and never let it show if your'e lost. Keep it moving, show respect, keep your head high, and never look too long at anyone.. =) Bless
It!s unbeliavable how you manage to record such things... such interviews... these documentaries are top notch.. no-go zones and behind bars are really stunning..
I've been to Tepito probably 10 times, 2 of them I made vlogs. I don't think it's the no go zone this film is making it out to be. It is absolutely dangerous IF you are involved in that kind of illegal activity. But if you go to Tepito just looking to buy some knock offs during the day and stay the main streets your biggest risk is just pick pocketing. It's one of the busiest markets in the country, full of life, streetfood, dancing and a bunch of really fun bars in the street. You can buy 1.5L michaladas and drink them anywhere. I've gone with the most innocent backpacking girl and not once did they feel in danger and always have a great time. Me and my roommate would cruise through Tepito if we were bored and walking around Centro and not even think twice about it. It is unfortunate it gets this reputation for crime, Yes all the crime is true and present, but when you go and you aren't looking for trouble it can be really enjoyable!
Correct. Dress simple and protect cash in hidden pockets. Don't trust friendly strangers who want to take you somewhere. Be careful who you drink with. Be polite but be careful with the trust, and most important- don't trust.
I was searching up "Mexico" in the RUclips search 10 minutes ago out of curiosity after having my fair encounters of people that are drug abusers around my neighborhood as I'm from Arizona and it brings me joy to watch free documentaries like this that Free Documentary gives us! ^.^ It gives us awareness that incidents like this happen globally way more than we think and never knew Tepito was such a dangerous neighborhood in Mexico City after my mother visiting Mexico City herself back in 2004 and always wanted to visit the country myself!
Ahmmm you should really think about not watching anymore of these "free documentaries" dude. They seem like they're further harming your ignorant-mind lol.
When I was a student exchange in Mexico City, I would take the subway to this market everyday. It was awesome. This was in 1988 but I always felt safe and I bought all of my souvenirs from this market.
You're doing an incredible job with your tough documentaries. I've always wondered how do you get these hardened thugs and criminals convinced to agree to film their illegal activities?
As the other guy said, the documentaries are not produced by this channel, but I can imagine the original filmmaker just pays these guys money. Someone that kills people for money surely also gives an interview for the right price. What I additionally wonder tho is how they convinced them that they wouldn't leak their information to the police. Surely an ordinary contract saying "we wont snitch on you, we promise" wouldn't have much value for these guys, as they are lawless anyways.
I lived in Mexico (ciudad de mexico) and went to Tepito with my mom once, just imagine us two black foreign ladies who lived in the Lomas (Hills) walking around tepito shopping and eating kkkk Our embassy driver scolded us so hard and told us to never go there again by ourselves but we were so adventurous! And for your info it was actually peaceful (it was day, so that must be why), the people were polite and educated (at least in our faces) and food great as expected from Mexican cousine!
Does anyone remember Bald and Bankrupt looking around in this place, grabbing the attention of the locals? 😂 It was during the day though, but still what a mad lad.
He dsnt cause any troubles, you could basically do the same thing. There are tons of people there as a matter of fact these cartels need tourist cs they spend money
My girlfriend and I wondered into Tepito crossing the street from the Lagunilla market because she is a fashion designer and we saw the leather coat shops and we were trying to find leather Hyde in the raw and walked into the market. We found a shop and the people were very nice. The gangsters selling drugs were polite and pointed us in the right direction. After we got our leather we wondered deeper and deeper into the market. It was quite amazing. And when we were ready to leave we simply back tracked. Don't last money and keep your phone in your pocket. Don't look for trouble and the double will not find you.

It really is a shame, the general corruption issue. I travel to Mexico at least once a year. I have met very good police, enforcement and Navy personnel. 9 out of 10 times it's the Supervisor that is corrupt. The cartel's and gangs know who the top dog is, where they live, who their family members are. Help us or we start with your family first. That is an offer you cannot refuse.

My pops took us to Tepito, we borrowed my uncles van with MX plates to drive to Tepito, no way would we use our van with California plates in Tepito we would not survive. My Posp said stay close and do not speak English, do not ask questions. He showed us where he grew up and lived, you can feel the tense, danger and feel unsafe. Cops are corrupted and you do not ask to use the bathroom or go into the alleys. It's very dangerous specially if you are from USA. I've always wondered how these photographers/videographers have the resources to get to the bosses for interviews, but the police don't.... It just doesn't make sense. IMO, it proves that the police are 100% involved in protecting the criminals. If the videographers can get to them, the police could easily do so too, they just choose not to.
The police don't "interview the bosses" because they wouldn't live to tell the story, seriously, your logic that the police are not Interviewing the bosses because they are protecting the cartels is pointless, these guys have zero fear of "Da Cops".
@@nicolasrose3064 I think you’re missing the point. It’s not that police aren’t doing interviews, it’s the fact that they’re unable to catch these criminals in an unending cat and mouse chase, for decades at a time, whereas these videographers can easily access their locations and such. And it was even mentioned that police corruption is a huge problem so they have a point in saying that the police do in fact protect these criminals.

yeah. documentaries are presented with the same sort of drama as hollywood films. it brings suspense and boosts viewings. the only way to appreciate any environment is to go there with an open mind having done your research and just act sensibly. chances are nothing will come of it. but if you go with preconceived notions and fear then this attitude will attract its own trouble. in fact whereever you go.
Tepito is a go zone for tourists. I went to their street market, walked all around, and felt comfortable. If your looking for trouble, it will find you, but if not, your ok.
Sometimes, I think the police's "special task forces" sticks out like a sore thumb most of the time. Either alerting people or having them be an easy target.

Hey my friend interesting story I lived in nezahualcoyotl for 3 of the last 4 years I guess as my wife is from there I actually love the area the people there are so welcoming and friendly towards me and people love to have celebrations there especially at Christmas we had a gathering every night for a week food and piñatas for the kids and a big party on Saturday all night no one ever complains I walk around the area daily and have thankfully never seen a problem. But my wife’s childhood there was vastly different at the time neza was the worlds largest slum no running water even no police
I can't believe the thugs think a mask hides their identity. The camera missed a blur occasionally, distinguishing tattoos, profiles....it would be easy for cops to bust them...if they weren't corrupt as well.
Dates back to the time of the aztecs. Originally named Teocultepitan, which the Spaniards shorten to Tepito. It has always been like this an informal market/outdoor swap meet (tianguis).
I'm curious as what the hitman does with all the money he earns. 14000 Euro per hit in Mexico is a lot of money I guess. But still he lives like he's practically broke. Love these series keep up the good work please!
Is mind blowing yo hear these guys talking like it was another day in the neighborhood. this Pancho guy the hit man, so heartless. Hell awaits people like him.
The gangster makes his way through thousands of people in narrow alleyways disappearing into a crowd. Literally walks around with a cameraman with bigass camera recording him.
I went to Mexico in 1998 right after high school, right before I went to the police academy. In Mexico City, there was not one second where I felt like it was safe. Not one. I couldn't believe how little I really knew before going.
2006 was the last time I stepped foot in Mexico. I live in Southern California so on rare occasions, I would go to Tijuana for a few hours. I took my 16 year old twin daughters to do a little shopping. It had such a weird, dangerous vibe, I never went back. Now, it is actually the most dangerous city in the world. More homicides per capita than any other city.

Downside of being neighbors with the US and not having a stable government. The us starts it dumb drug war and then sells all its guns and buys all the drugs from Mexico.
I lived in a Tijuana for 6 years. Minded my own business never had a problem ever. I find more dangerous San Diego. Obviously if you TRY to have problems in Tijuana you'll find them . Guaranteed.
I have family that live in Mexico City. when i went to visit they told me to avoid certain areas and Tepito was the main one they told me to stay away from.
I walked around Tepito with a camera, filming the whole place, for a full hour once. At some point a guy came up to me and told me sternly that i shouldnt film here. I turned it off and maybe 15 meter further there were a bunch if guys trying to sell drugs. Im very thankfull nothing bad happened to me that day. I have a video about it :p
I think they like that a documentary is being made about them. It makes them seem more famous and bigger than other gangs, therefore they probably enjoy it because it's all about them and how lethal they can be. It's meant to scare people and that's what they want. If they said no, they know the crew could simply go to another gang.
@@implodingllama2092 who said i assume that, corrupt law enforcement agencies certainly wouldnt be a fan of these documentries either as it would have people think they are corrupt or doing nothing about the problem or both 🤷♂️

But if you go to Tepito just looking to buy some knock offs during the day and stay the main streets your biggest risk is just pick pocketing. filmmakers arranged all the tiny details through third party.
As the other guy said, the documentaries are not produced by this channel, but I can imagine the original filmmaker just pays these guys money. Someone that kills people for money surely also gives an interview for the right price.
