The funniest thing is that Roger Daltrey acts like he's some David Hasselhoff wannabe in this movie. Fun fact, the original comic first released on Hasselhoff's 17th birthday, so I'm sure his horror roots started there.

Holy crap! I am a 57-year old fan of this kind of low-budget schlock, and I had absolutely NO IDEA this film existed! You really dug into a crate to find this one! "You're Roger Daltrey not Ike Turner!" Freakin' marvelous!
I know everything and have even been reading the current Vampi comic (C. Priest is a fave writer) and I still never heard of this either!
To be fair, the skillsets to be a rock front man and to be a Corman sci-fi movie villain are effectively identical.

Roger Daltrey played a reoccurring character on the 90s Highlander TV series and he was so good that they kept bringing him back in flashbacks after his character was killed.
Daltry did a good job on Sliders too, as a maniacal military officer.

For Highlander (TV), Roland Gift of the Fine Young Cannibals had an impressive role. Xavier St Cloud was one of the few villains that I felt could match the intensity of the protagonist.
I completely forgot he was on Sliders! I always remember he was in an episode of Tales from the Crypt where he loses his nose in the end 😮

I was the first woman to write Vampirella. The fact that it's difficult to cosplay as the character is a major problem for the character. Also one of my FB friends is Talisha's 1st cousin. 'Tis a small world.
Why is it a difficult cosplay? I feel like we've seen cosplayers do more with less. Or should that be less with more?
How did you feel about the retcons that happen like the issues with Vampi's mother or where Drakulon actually is?

I got the idea for a business that provides discreet(or not so much) bodyguards for professional booth babes and cosplayers. Idiots and perverts tend to behave themselves when 200 lbs+ of muscle is giving them the stink eye.

Ackerman is essentially the first "famous fan" quickly becoming a big name in contributing to early sci-fi fandom zines, attending the 1st World Sci-Fi Convention in "futuricostume"--inventing cosplay--and promoted science fiction, fandom, sci-fi fandom, and more throughout his life. Dude was a character.
Hearing Dracula's scheme I would love to see a Vampirella Simpsons Treehouse of Horror segment starring recurring Simpsons character Booberella and Mr. Burns as Dracula.
In a Simpson's comic story, nearly the entire town becomes parodies of super heroes, among whom, Mrs Krabbappel is turned into Vampiredna. (Groan.)

I can think of two reasons
Vampires are a 'pretty timeless genre with lots of room for expansion and adaptation. Legacy Of Kain, Vampire The Masqurade, Underworld, Nosferatu, Dracula. And those are just some of the good ones.

Funny enough, not the last time Daltry was involved in an adaptation of a famously scantily clad comic character cause he was in an episode of the Witchblade TV series.
Should’ve mentioned the AWESOME art on the cover of her debut appearance by legendary artist Frank Frazzetta.
Her comic book outfit is strikingly similar to that of Starfire's outfit from DC comics, and both are from another planet, interesting
Wynorski rocks... although the earlier Hammer version was also to include Peter Cushing as Pendragon, Vampi's partner in the comic. What might have been. And JULIE STRAIN would have been classic in this "adaptation". Funny to see John Landis referencing one of the inspirations for "Alien" in this. BTW... please do "Listzomania"!
I hope that next movie is Mystery Men. A memoriam of sorts for Paul Reubens who played The Spleen in the film.

Honestly, I don't think Vampirella is a character that could be adapted into live-action in today's climate without drastic changes that could easily alienate the original fans.
It would make for an amazing adult cartoon or even an anime though.
i could be wrong, but i think the key would be emphasizing her badassery and independence instead of giving off the impression that she's only there to serve as eye candy. i mean it apparently worked for J-Lo when she played a stripper.
different times, a lot of comic books only survived their times due to niche audience with low rest of the public visibility. Now with the last decades 24/7 internet coverage and social zombies, a lot of the stuff that use to be sold in a special section of a brick and mortar and or wrapped in brown paper bag doesn't fly well with direct to screen release like the 80s and 90s had some allowance dwindling. Stipperalla, that was the name of that one season cartoon... Ah the beginning of the 2Ks.
Streaming content is a whole different thing, if there were an equivalent to Cinemax . . .maybe SpikeTV in the day. Oh well, there isn't really a bar against it internationally, all the direct to stream B and C tier still is out there . .

When Daltry is in his rockstar garb, I keep thinking he's Alex Winter in The Lost Boys. It's almost uncanny.

I love this movie as a teenager. This filled my Xena craze back then. Plus, it has Angus Scrim.
Some interesting trivia about the Hammer Vampirella project. As Brandon noted, Caroline Munro was the studio's first choice, but she declined when it would have involved nudity. Hammer asked one or two other Hammer "regulars" but finally convinced former Playboy centerfold model Barbara Leigh to sign on as the title role. Peter Cushing agreed to play Vampi's mentor Pendragon, an actual sorcerer with a drinking problem posing as a simple stage illusionist. He was genuinely interested in the project, going so far as to sketch his character on a copy of the script (maybe an outline). I'm trying to find the bloody site where I saved the 70s photo-scan and the article detailing the ill fated production. As drawn in the comic, Pendragon did resemble Cushing, so it was only natural he was appraoched.
Now, in the original Warren comics there was a semi-regular character named Conrad, the father of Adam van Helsing, a blind and near fanatical vampire hunter who initially distrusted Vampi. He was not part of the original Hammer outline which is a shame because he too was drawn to resemble Peter Cushing. It would have been a real trip for Peter to have played both roles, the kindly father figure and the person fearing she is a monster. I can imagine the 70s styled trailer announcing, "See Peter Cushing as Pendragon, the wizard majestic who takes Vampirella under his wing. And...see Peter Cushing also as Conrad van Helsing, the aged vampire hunter who would drive a stake into Vampirella's heart!"
I'm sure others here have stated that as they developed this production, Hammer Films declared bankruptcy and shut down, thus halting any immediate plans for a movie. Barbara Leigh wore the bikini outfit, quite faithful to the comic design, for a photo shoot and several of those images eventually became covers for the comic.
Now, I've read claims he costume as drawn would not work in live action as an explanation for the unflattering suit we saw in Brandon's review. That is a weak argument. There are bathing suits for general purchase that possess a cut almost identical to the comic design save for the flared and raised collar. (I bet those exist, too.) Plenty of young women have publicly sported them without "wardrobe malfunctions". Plus, I have personally seen a noted cosplayer from the Atlanta area, Leslie Culton, sport her own variant which had straps barely wider than the areolas of her breasts, striding with confidence within the hotels that host Dragon*Con. She posed for photos posing provocatively, going so far as to crawl upon all fours like a feral animal and then rise to her feet again with nary the "nip slip". Even if such were to happen in a movie production, it's not a live performance before an audience. If "something" pops out, they could stop rolling, call for wardrobe crew, fix the issue and continue.
One last thing, though Munro declined the role in 1975, some sort of agreement was eventually reached because a 1/6th scale doll with seamless joints was released a few years ago, a comic accurate Vampirella with Caroline Munro's features! Google "Caroline Munru Vampirella doll" and you'll get plenty of examples of the collectible depicting "what could have been".
Nicely said. I know Hammer's version would not have been great but it would have been better than this hot mess of a film.

When my ex husband and I first started living together he had a full door size poster of classic Vampirella.
I was only 19 so I was still pretty immature, I was so jealous of that poster I made him hang on the closet inside door.
And now approximately 40 yrs later the husband is gone and I would love that posternow.
If there was ever a property screaming for a *Harley Quinn* and/or *Legend of Vox Machina* style adult animated series it's *Vampirella.*
Huh, can't believe I missed this movie back in the day. Talisa Soto was beautiful in Mortal Kombat and Roger Corwin movies were a favorite at the video store, might have to download and watch the whole movie when I get the chance.
This was a fun review to watch. Roger Daltry was pretty fun to look at in this. I'd love to see a proper Vampirella film that has the fun charm and sexiness of the comics. It'd be really good.

As a Vegas native, it’s fun to see that the Drakulon set was the old entrance to Bally’s hotel/casino. The moving walkway with the neon around it went to the front doors.

I remember watching Highlander the Tv series and my favorite episodes was always with the Who singer as Mac's long time friend... didnt even know he was the musician back then but he's such a likable charisma to him.

I think that the only way to make the costume work in real life while looking like the comic book, is to go with a flesh tone bodysuit with the red sewn to it. This was a fair review of the movie.

One of the things was there was no Actress that vaguely looks like the actual character. The outfit change was a design from another Artist.
Who replaced the original.

As an older gentleman who grew up reading Warren publications like Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella, I can't express my disappointment enough. There was plenty of good source material that, in the right hands, could have translated into a pretty interesting story. Julie Strain would have been great to, um, fill the Vampirella outfit. Warren was known for some pretty good writing and was less comic booky and more of a horror short stories platform and some of the artwork was beautiful. Many of the covers were done by Boris, Frazetta, and other well-known fantasy artists. In fact, the cover you show in this video is signed "Frazetta" on the bottom left. Some of those stories have stuck with me to this day. Vampi had a lot of backstory and deserves a good, serious re-telling.
I got to meet Forrest Ackerman! He used to give tours of his Ackermansion. Dude was like the Hugh Hefner of sci-fi. Had had this huge house FILLED with sci-fi memorabilia. He wore a robe like Hefner's and he had all the collage girls living there! The guy was awesome! 😁
Though I heard he had to move out of his place into a much smaller apartment and give up a lot of his stuff. It was really sad.
Being a Vampirella fan, I have to admit I don't understand how I missed this back in the day.

The Modest Gimp was Brian Bloom?! Look him up if you don't know who he is. He and his brother were in The Stuff, and he's been in everything from cult movies to being the voice of BJ Blazco....the protagonist of the newer Wolfenstein games. Lead role and writer for COD: Infinite Warfare. Awesome and underappreciated character actor and writer. Love your show, even if you are from this little known "Canadia" you speak of. And Clutch is my favorite band 🤘

Vampirella had a pretty big role in my adolescence so I was curious about this movie years ago when I heard it came out. And it had Princess Kitana of all people as Vampi. I never got around to watching it though. Guess I'll have to pick it up just as a curiosity. Thanks for this review Brandon!

Yeah if we could have gotten Caroline Munro in the 70s or Julie Strain in the 90s or even Adrienne Barbeau in the 80s, this would have been an instant cult classic. As it is, I didn't even know this movie existed until this video, and I'm old enough to know better.

I’m more of a Lady Death person as opposed to Vampirella, or at least the current iteration of the former, which by the way Lady D also had a movie in the 2000s (albeit animated). By the way I also really want a Lady D action game by way of Devil May Cry.

Talking of Hammer movies, the ending to this film is a direct rip off from 'The Scars of Dracula'. In which Christopher Lee's Dracula, having had a metal stake thrown at him, pulls it out of his chest, goes to throw it back at the protagonist (Dennis Waterman) and 'Zzzzzzzap', is struck and fried and set ablaze by lightning hitting the stake as he does so. Lee's Dracula stumbles around for quite a bit though as he lights up, screaming and groaning for some time before plummeting off the castle parapet. So yes,.straight up rip off..

Actually you're exactly correct: the reason the costume was changed and they never attempted a new movie is indeed because of the costume. Apparently a comic-accurate suit would be so insanely impractical in real life that it'd probably fall off at the slightest move during action scenes. But on the other hand, said costume is so iconic that fans adamantly reject any change, even in the comic itself; and thus Vampirella has been insanely hard to adapt as a result.
Unrelated, but I legit cracked up watching the final fight scene XD it was like the two were bitch-slapping each other.
And why it doesn't falls off? Because it's drawn that way! 😂 Genius.
I've seen plenty of cosplayers that would disagree with you on making an accurate costume that doesn't fall off.
@@zerogrey3798 ah, but staying on while standing around posing or walking the convention center is not the same as staying on while punching a guy, or doing a flip, or something. of course, it seems like they cgi heroes when they are doing *anything* but standing around these days so idk
@@zerogrey3798 I said *during action scenes*. Cosplayers usually only have to walk around during convention and pause for occasional pics. Moving around, punching, picking and generally doing cascades would be an entirely different story.
Rodger Daltrey also cameoed as a Bond type secret agent in the James Bond spoof If Looks Could Kill. Another film you should definitely review. It's a fun campy ride of early 90s fluff. Stars Richard Greico as a high school senior who gets mistaken for an American super spy while on a class trip to France.
