Big thanks to Brandon for doing my request for Dungeonmaster. As a kid I would play dnd in the basement and spend the night down there every saturday night. After everyone went to bed I would sneak upstairs and sit in the hallway outside the living room watching the local channel's saturday night movie since my mom would always fall asleep with the tv on. Those were the first times I saw Fist of the North Star, Highway to Hell, Beastmaster, Cherry 3000 and Dungeonmaster (among other things) and it really shaped a lot of my interest in cult movies, so I've been looking forward to it being on the show.
Thanks for suggesting it. I'm not a patreon supporter, but I did mention this movie a month or so back in the comments of the Deathstalker 2 vid, remarking how surprised I was that he hadn't yet covered it. Nice one!

Hey Brandon, any chance you'll one day review one of my favorite 80s movies, The Wraith? It has an amazing cast, incredible car chases, amazing music, and is just one of the most 80sist movies ever.
Given that D&D back in that time period was usually a series of somewhat unconnected set pieces in the same location, that often made limited logical sense, I was rather hoping this movie would have been that. It's the right idea, ruined by some strange fascination with primitive Apple products.
That would be great, even if it was cheap and cheesy. You could have characters sharing back-stories (in a tavern, of course) before teaming up for a longer segment. Four 15 minute flash-backs then a 30 minute finale. Fun times.
Richard Moll is cool in my book. I was too young for night court. But I always think of him as the bad guy from the Highlander the series pilot and the gym teacher from sidekicks.

I gotta think the opener was a combo of things. On the one hand, both of his dreams are kind of portents to what's coming his way with Mestema. Both have somewhat mystical elements and both have the women of his life in them. That brings me to the second point; the lady in the opener is sort of his mental image of CAL. She's weirded out by CAL and alludes to it being like an affair, particularly given CAL has a feminine voice and the like. In Paul's subconscious, it translates to that.
I agree. Furthering the idea, Paul relies on the computer to do almost everything for him until the last two challenges, where he first claims "I don't even need my computer for this", then challenges Mestema to hand to hand combat. I suppose it's supposed to imply that people shouldn't rely on computers so much. Though, it sort of falls short after the computer has to create the pole for him to grab onto, saving him from the hole. Wait... Pole grab? No diving into the hole? Maybe the whole thing was just a visualization of a wet dream, after all...
Fun Fact "real life" black magician and self proclaimed beast of the book of revelation Aleister Crowley liked to tell the story that as a curious young boy to find out if cats really did have nine lives took a cat and "killed" it nine different ways to see if it would come back. Hearing Malevolous' or whatever his name is, story about tortouring a cat as a lad makes me want to believe that this movie is canonically the further adventures of Aleister Crowley after all he needed to find another worthy opponent after his wizard battle for control of the sacred artifacts of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn against fellow master of the mystic arts Irish poet W.B.Yeats. (Yes this actually happened)
Wait, after he kills that cat once, doesn't he have to wait for it to come back to life before killing it again? If he killed nine different cats then what was he expecting, for all of them or one of them to come back to life? I don't think he thought this one through.
@@garrick3727 It might have something to do with him trying to expand his consciousness by experimenting with every psychoactive substance. His autobiography was called "The Diary of a Drug Fiend"

My friend dragged me to this movie on it's opening day in the theaters. And considering that was the only time I saw it I remember a surprising amount of details. I still thinking of that "changing the streetlight" trick very often; usually when I'm walking up to a street corner(I know, weird, right?). I also remembered that before he was sent to the Wasp concert he had started playing some goofy MIDI music from his wristband thingy to taunt Richard Moll, who then said something like, "If you like that music so much then have your FILL of it!" and then transported him to the Troubadour(apparently). I thought that was weird because Wasp didn't sound at all like an electronica '80's band at all. And, yeah, I remember how the computer saved his life by projecting that energy beam to grab onto. I knew it wasn't great but any definition of the word but I remember at least being entertained. So that's gotta say something about the quality of the movie...right? Oh, and I also was confused as to why he got put into that silly outfit and the computer got turned into a wrist thing.
I mean, I have to admit, besides the other awesome pure 80s goodness of this movie the true defining characteristic is that catchphrase. To think this little known movie is the film that gave us the immortal “ I reject your reality and substitute my own” is it a true point of pride.
_The Dungeonmaster_ teached all of us a very important lesson: magic and demonic powers are no match for some good ol' freaking lazers! *Hell yeah SCIENCE!*
I believe there puppet that guy shoots up in the cave was also used in sword and the Sorcerer horror movie previously worked on by Bueuclet . I heard about it on some behind-the-scenes video I stumbled across I will while ago.
I had forgotten WASP was in this movie! Saw them live a few times in the '80s, they put on a hell of a show. I remember renting this movie from the local VHS/Beta movie rental store and enjoying it a lot as a teen.
So here's my theory. Paul is a genius and invented a technology with godlike abilities. Understanding the destruction it would cause in the wrong hands (let's face it you don't want Elon Musk with that kind of power), Paul instead keeps it to himself and uses it to make his life just ever so mildly convenient. He takes money as he needs it, gets himself a modest place, and overall keeps a low profile and enjoys life. However this catches the attention of an eldritch being that either is or pretends to be Satan who toys with Paul for reasons beyond mortal comprehension.
I think this movie is short just for budget reasons think about it SFX are pretty good for a relatively low budget movie so I think it is a case Quality over Quantity, I also wonder how much each segment was discussed between directors, if they where fairly independent and if all they were told is the wrist band shoots lasers and stuff that could be why they so many ended with him using a laser.
My favourite is the stop motion. In UK it was called RAGEWAR with the nudity part shown in the trailers which just pushed it the direction of nasty to get more rentals here!

Oh, and I also was confused as to why he got put into that silly outfit and the computer got turned into a wrist thing.
I dunno, maybe Mestema originally wanted to zap him into the middle of a Depeche Mode concert?
"I reject your realty and substitute my own."
Fun fact:
Blackie Lawless was supposed to speak at the congretional hearings with the PMRC but declined.
I mean, I have to admit, besides the other awesome pure 80s goodness of this movie the true defining characteristic is that catchphrase. To think this little known movie is the film that gave us the immortal “ I reject your reality and substitute my own” is it a true point of pride.
Chekhov's Run: When a main character runs in the first act, that same character needs to run again before the end of the movie.
I've been watching Night Court, so when you said Richard Moll I just started laughing because I just see him as Bull.
_The Dungeonmaster_ teached all of us a very important lesson: magic and demonic powers are no match for some good ol' freaking lazers! *Hell yeah SCIENCE!*
Computer nerds for the win!
Doom, anyone?
Dr. Midnight meets Tron meets Sword and the Sorcerer
HEY, I've actually seen this one! Wow, that does make it hit different. Love this movie, thank you!
Thor showing up never, ever gets old.
I believe there puppet that guy shoots up in the cave was also used in sword and the Sorcerer horror movie previously worked on by Bueuclet . I heard about it on some behind-the-scenes video I stumbled across I will while ago.
Another reason to love the 80's. I'm a fan of WASP as well.
I had forgotten WASP was in this movie! Saw them live a few times in the '80s, they put on a hell of a show. I remember renting this movie from the local VHS/Beta movie rental store and enjoying it a lot as a teen.
Learning the line "I reject reality and substitute my own!" originally came from this movie was _weird_ ....
Adam Savage said it better imho.
I thought it came from some philosophical literature. Indeed nuts that it was a rental B-Movie.
So less Bill Gates and more Dr. Serizawa?
I think this movie is short just for budget reasons think about it SFX are pretty good for a relatively low budget movie so I think it is a case Quality over Quantity, I also wonder how much each segment was discussed between directors, if they where fairly independent and if all they were told is the wrist band shoots lasers and stuff that could be why they so many ended with him using a laser.
My favourite is the stop motion. In UK it was called RAGEWAR with the nudity part shown in the trailers which just pushed it the direction of nasty to get more rentals here!
"direction of nasty" don't you mean "direction of video nasty"?
@@TheBrandonTenold exactly what I meant
When will you do Beastmaster?
Still hope Brandon does the 80s Blob remake someday
How about he does the 50s Blob instead?
@@Nestalgba92023 Both
@@ericb9252 Both is good
one of the few great remakes.
I remember this from when I was young, but never saw it start to finish. Always just in bits and pieces while channel surfing late at night.
Slow-Motion Bitch-Slap was the name of my band in college.
This movie was released as Time Warrior in my country
Hey Brandon, just gotta say I received my copy of In Search of Darkness III a few days back, so good to see you in there. I've watched it over the last couple of evening and really enjoyed it and will happily say it's my favourite of the In Search of documentaries it was a long wait but worth it and for anyone reading this I highly recommend it.
Can't wait to also back the in search of horror 90s , coming up in the future
How did you not include Friday the 13th Part 7 in John Carl Buechler's credits?
