Welcome to my in-depth look back of Fallout New Vegas, the iconic post-apocalyptic RPG that captured the hearts of gamers worldwide.
With the Fallout series TV show hitting streaming services soon I thought it would be a great idea to venture back to the wasteland and see if Fallout New Vegas was really that good!

Yes. This was the game that Fallout 3 should have been. As far as which games are the best in the series, it's a toss-up between Fallout 2 and Fallout New Vegas.
Alot of Fo2 love going around in the comment section, maybe I should dive into the classics as I have never touched them 💪🏻👔
@Guyinthetie Everything it seems like you loved the most about the writing and the DLC settings and tone was cranked up to 11 in Fallout 2. If you aren't turned off by CRPG mechanics it might end up being your favorite.

You forgot actual gameplay, making 4 easily the best because it plays well and doesn't look like play doh and settlement building is amazing. If all you're judging is writing, read a book. Gameplay and graphics matter when judging games.😊
@sleeperdart Even if we aren't judging by writing 4 is still pretty mid. Its shooter mechanics don't compare well to actual shooters of the era, the graphics were never anything to write home about, and the gameplay loop is just Borderlands-lite. Writing is a pretty important part of a Fallout game, and most choice-based RPGs in general.

Short Answer: Yes.
Long Answer: New Vegas is a perfect synthesis of OG Fallout writing sensibilities and newer Fallout gameplay. It is, in short, the perfect Fallout experience.

You only need the New Vegas Tick Fix and Yui's Unofficial Patch. The game will run like a dream with minimal crashes(it's still a game on a Bethesda engine, after all)
@Guyinthetie Absolutely. Fallout 2 still has the atrocious mechanics that makes the OG games hard for folks who didn't grow up with them to get into.
New Vegas has Fallout 1/2 level writing with much more enjoyable gameplay mechanics

27:10 it actually makes a lot of sense from a lore point for the NCR and Legion to pardon you at that point. Its not like either of the actually want to do that, they are just kinda forced to. The player did like five things previously considered impossible (Enter the Lucky 38, kill a Strip Family leader, escape the grave, ...) and both factions are having some mayor issues that need fixing from an outside source, so they pardon you in the hope you will help them

32:11 that is not the story of the DLC. The owner was in love with Verra, but they never married. Verra was never ment to love him back, Dean (they Ghoul you work with) intended for her to seduce him so he can get to guys money. The casino closes whith all the people inside, but that was intentional, as the bombs fell that day and it was always ment to be like a vault just without the experiments. But the casino malfunctions (Likely because it was built by the guys from Big MT) and kills everyone
Also at the end Verra (who Dean manipulated through her dependency on med-x due to chronic disease) actually does love Sinclair and wants to call off the heist, but Dean won't let her. She's trapped in that room begging Sinclair who has a change of heart but dies trying to override the security on the door. Verra then realises she's trapped and ODs on med-x to end her life. It's incredibly tragic and well-written.
1 thing I adore about the games is the aesthetic. 3 had this grimy washed out greenish pallette, vegas went for grimy gold/yellow whilst 4 went for a nightmarish but colourful fd up style reminiscant of a kids program gone horribly wrong.
The style for fo4 really throws me like it looks good but everything has this clean roundness to it.. it's bizarre but not in a bad way 💪🏻👔
nah man I hate the yellow piss orange look of fallout new vegas. Yes, it is iconic. No, it isn't nice, it's ugly as hell. Reminds me of Ratchet and clank 3's colour palette which was awful, specially coming after Ratchet and Clank 1 and 2 which had so many different visuals for each planet. God what were they thinking when having orange and brown as their main colour.
also reminds me of all thoseovies and shows that put a yellow filter for their mexico scenes, Breaking Bad for example which was funny but stupid

Funny how once you reached adulthood you were able to appreciate the better game.
It’s crazy I got this game in 3rd grade and didn’t fully play it till I turned 21 and it’s been my fav game ever since.
This is why making these videos is so amazing I get to go back and play these titles with more of a analytical mindset and you appreciate far more

Yup, I think a lot of people often forget that some experiences cannot be fully appreciated until you've reached a certain level of maturity.
That's not a slight to the other games, but New Vegas is a game that is designed with mature gamers in mind. It has mature themes, including things that RUclips itself would autodelete from the comment section if I simply called it by it's proper term. It assumes a certain level of critical thinking skills, and also patience from the player. Things that children tend not to have much of yet.
Bethesda level writing and game design is almost insulting to your intelligence by comparison. They design their games for general audiences, more akin to a show made for high schoolers than for matured adults. They lack the depth and complexity of consequence. They aren't bad games, but they're made for a different audience.
Fallout 3 and NV are like frozen chicken nuggets and fried chicken thighs, respectively.
Chicken nuggets are awesome and easy for kids, but as you get older, you appreciate fried chicken thighs as you get older. You might still have a taste for nuggies, but you remember why you stopped eating them when you eat one again
To be fair about the “Get out of jail free card,” most players get that moment much earlier in their play-through, especially on their first time. You had already done a lot of exploring and made contact with groups like the Boomers. Most players will stick predominantly to the main quest until after they’ve confronted Benny, and then begin really exploring. I think the developers figured you’d still have at least two thirds of the game left at that point.

To be fair with the Legion giving you a pass, most players get to that part long before you did. Usually you do the quests for the boomers, kings, brotherhood, etc. AFTER getting the platinum chip.
Ah so I most likely just sequenced broke the story but getting heavily side tracked 😅 still though would be cool if you didn't get the pass at all and it boils down to how you play your courier 💪🏻👔
@@Guyinthetie Honestly it's really hard to sequence break the story in this game. On my current playthrough I found out that there's special dialogue if you never talk to Mr. House before Fortification Hill.

@@GuyinthetieCesar will actually acknowledge all your wrong doings against the legion, if you take the pass. So it is accounted for in those players that do a bunch of things before hand.
One game is a sequel to Fallout 1 and 2, and the other is on the opposite coast and completely disregards the progress humanity has made elsewhere in 200 years to reboot the apocalyptic setting. Which is the spinoff?

@@angrybrony I disagree strongly with the notion that FO3 "saved" the franchise. Unless you consider having new products to buy being that which gives a media property life, then if anything it did the opposite. Yeah sure, there's more FO games out now than ever... but the particular tone and themes established by FO1, and furthered and expanded upon by FO2, were absolutely slaughtered by Bethesda with FO3. FO3 is superficially similar to the first two games but in every way that matters - worldbuilding, tone, themes, game progression, character writing, etc. - it's a completely different beast.

I think New Vegas is a better game than 3 but it simply wouldn’t exist without 3. FO3 crawled so New Vegas could awkwardly limp around in a dated engine with excellent writing and worldbuilding.
The game was so good I'm now 31 still wishing I found a game that gave me the feels new vegas did for years. I never found it. 😢
For me the only game to truly get me immersed in the last few years was elden ring 💪🏻👔
32 and same so I just keep playing it 😂 when the clan gets offline I turn the ps5 off and turn the pc on but I agree with the other reply Elden Ring is pretty immersive especially on pc with Virgil’s move set but everyone knows Bloodborne is the New Vegas of souls games
I personally think the greatness and brilliance of NV (bugs notwithstanding) cannot be fully appreciated from one runthrough of the game. It has such a sheer variety of choice and consequences to those choices compared to any other game of the series, and you get so much extra insight and information through doing each storyline. The weapons too, there's so many fun options for different builds and playstyles, and different resolutions to the companion stories as well. With the DLCs as well for instance, Ulysses can be talked down and reasoned with, and you can speak with him after the end of the DLC and get some more insight from him. My personal favorite DLC is OWB, entirely for its writing and character stuff, with Lonesome Road in 2nd, and a tie between the first two. OWB has many of the best weapons for energy builds (you can also upgrade the K9000 gun into a more powerful .44 machine gun called FIDO) and I love its style and scifi nature. Ulysses is pretty widely regarded along w/ Joshua Graham as the best character in the Fallout franchise or at least one of the best, and I couldn't agree more as I find his character very fascinating, and I always think killing him undercuts a lot of the story and themes. I think mechanically the first DLC can be very frustrating and I had a very hard time with it my first run, but its writing is excellent. I love the environment and new gear in Honest Hearts as well as Graham, but the rest of the DLC is sort of lacking.
New Vegas has a persistent theme, that being "Letting Go." House cannot let go of his old idea of Vegas, the NCR cannot let go of the idea of emulating the United States, and the Legion cannot let go of the old ideals of fascism, conservativism, and the Roman Empire. These ideas are best illustrated by the name of the 3rd DLC, Old World Blues. Each DLC has a bit to go with this too, Elijah cannot let go of the heist and his plans even if they are evil and flawed, and (technically) you're not supposed to be able to take all the Gold Bars so you have to literally "let them go", Joshua Graham needs to let go of his hate and his time in the Legion to move on and become a better person, the Think Tank cannot let go of their experiments and past, and Ulysses must let go of his hatred for the Courier, which you do if you ally with him in the ending where you talk him down and the two of you work together to fight off the Marked Men, Lonesome Road in general is about the Courier letting go of their own past and finishing their arc before the 2nd Battle for Hoover Dam.

I admit that on my six playthroughs of New Vegas I've never played without unofficial patches, because the game is buggy as hell. But then again, I've never played a Bethesda game for long without a unofficial patch. New Vegas is still my favorite though

Its not as buggy as you think, and the unofficial patch fixes a bunch of stuff that arent bugs, and are just things the dev doesnt agree with
Just a heads up for new players, if you change the difficulty from in game it doesn't actually change, it only works from the main menu.
Obsidian needs to make a remake of
New Vegas remake the game from the ground up with Fallout 4 gunplay StarFields graphics and the all RPG perks from the old game and a slightly bigger map that's all I need.

in Dead Money you can lure Father Elijah into the vault and trap him there. then you have a station on your pip boy for the rest of the game where you can hear him slowly losing his mind in there

I mean whole DLC's point was *LETTING GO*. You were supposed to let go those juicy, BIG GOD DAMN GOLD BARS. Elijah was supposed to let go his defeat at Helios One and Dean was supposed to let go of his heist. All three of us failed that, but as the Courier, I got to tell the tale. Thanks the carcass of the Father Elijah, i got all them 37 bars.
When I got the Pimp Boy 3m I got a bug that made the pip boy screen permanently crooked so I had to tilt my head every time I opened it. What a great game !

The pardon is essential because most players reach that point long before you did, and many have killed legionnaires without knowing you can work with them or meet their leader and hear his philosophy and history of the legion.
For example I killed the legion in Nipton out of outrage, which would have prevented me from activating House/YesMan's securitrons which are at the legion Fort. That's why that pardon is there, to stop new players accidentally locking themselves out of half the story.
It’s 100% not a spin-off. In fact if you look at the actual definition of what makes a piece of media a spin-off then fallout 3, 4, and 76 are all spin-offs.

I find it hard to recommend this game in its vanilla state. There are too many bugs and the cut content makes it feel pretty empty. It kinda requires at least Open Strip and a mod to add more NPCs walking around.
Yes no doubt modded is way better but tbh It's not too bad in vanilla least for me (Win 10 /Win 8 compatibility mode) Runs fine. Crashes are rare but can still happen.

Fallout NV was designed as a spinoff, is was changed after to be a main but non number game like resident evil revelations, please keep that in mind because it explains many of the games issues, as it’s larger then initially expected

You can make an easy trek north from Good Springs to the Tribal Village if you utilize dynamite taken from powder gangers from high ground to eliminate the cazitors

I also thought it didn't make much sense how the Legion pardon you, but I think it's because the platinum chip is needed to destroy the securitrons in the bunker. Since you're the only person who has the item needed to accomplish that, they let you off the hook in the hopes that you'll help Caesar out (alongside the fact that Caesar said he liked you because you get results). But I do agree that it's still a bit stupid how you get pardoned regardless of your actions against them. Same goes for the NCR as well. They will even pardon you if you nuked both factions in Lonesome Road before reaching the Strip lol. I think they should have made it where you only get pardoned if you don't reach a "Vilified" reputation with either of them. Also slight correction for Dead Money: Vera wasn't Sinclair's wife, Sinclair just had a massive crush on her. Dean blackmailed her into helping him break into his vault to get his gold.

Regarding the reputation reset, I think it's very in character for the Legion to do. They see a determined soldier who is willing to go trough hell and high water to get revenge on the guy who tried to kill him so they want to recruit him. That is very similar to how Lanius was recruited into the Legion. He killed dozens of Legionaries at least, and that is the reason they let him live and recruited him into the army.
As for the NCR, I agree with you.

Running it on modern hardware just download some community patches for free on the Nexus that fix the crashes, stuttering etc.
You seem to have missed the secondary 'main' plot in Honest Hearts about the survivalist up in the mountain caves, you can even get his armor and unique 12.7mm rifle which are really cool.
You're right that NV is far better than 3 but most people didn't give it a chance at launch (which cost Obsidian their bonus by 2 points on metacritic 😥) so people have green tinted nostalgia goggles for 3 despite none of your choices mattering at all. For me player agency is what makes RPGs like NV great and just blowing everything up with a giant robot at the end was kinda meh. Tbh NV is probably the best game in the whole series for me, as it definitely has the most impactful choices to make.

When i was a kid playing i ran straight to vegas to gamble and get laid. Just played it again basically for the first time and omg this game is so ahead of its time and still tops almost every open world. I always wanted a game where the quests arent just go here shoot these guys and come back. the writing and world building makes it feel like youre actually helping the mojave instead of just getting told what to do for contents sake. im on my second play through and already have done about 4-5 different quests i completely missed on my first run.

Well in my simple case, Old World Blues was my favorite because all the campiness, the attitude of the brains in the think rank being like those B type science fiction movies of the 50's, and Lets not forget the dialogues and personalities of all the apliances.
The dialogues, even if it was too much, i have to be honest, it was one of times were u laughed more in the entire game.
The only downside to that DLC was the dialogue trees going on for a little too long, 30mins in the opening talking to a smart TV is just a bit rough even if the dialogue is funny

People keep sucking off the 18 month thing but let's be realistic here. They had a full engine to which they made practically no changes outside of Dt (and to catastrophic results considering the launch) and with a shitton of assets ready and available to use, along with taking major characters and plot points etc from Van Buren.
Comparatively fallout 2 had apparently only had 9 months of real development compared to Fallout 1's 3+ years.
Basically for all intents and purposes New Vegas is a 8-9 million Dollar Budget Expansion Mod with professional full time devs. 18 Months is short, but not for the purposes of what New Vegas actually is.
Don't get me wrong though New Vegas is still by far and away the best game in the series, with the only real contender being Fallout 1 and that only being on a Narrative level. It's just that people like to paint a dumb shit narrative about the struggling poor poor devs, even though that narrative was disproved by the devs. Only people more annoying than NV Fans in the Fallout community are NMA type people, but those are straight cringe as fuck.
I respect the grind but it will not stop me shedding light on the bugs regardless if they "didn't have time for QA" you can make an amazing game reusing assets just look at the legend of Zelda majora's mask

@@karlkoskie2891 NPC/Companion Approval already existed.
Cooking/Crafting are a subsect of the barter menu/already existing crafting with minor alterations.
Faction system already existed but entirely unutilized.
Skill/Perk/Stat Checks already existed but were barely utilized.
Companion Wheels, Iron Sights, Weapon Modding, Ammo Types, Swapping some skills around and Perks are not an Overhaul to the Engine, they are practically simple additions most of which had already been made by FO3 modders before NV even came out lol.
Big Horner and Spore Carriers are some of the worst examples to pick because they are reskinned Brahmin and Trogs respectively, should've mentioned the Ghost People.
I never made the statement that they never added assets or improved on some mechanics because that is stupid as fuck, i said they made practically no systemic changes to the underlyng mechanics of the game's engine, which is true. Everything you mentioned either already exists but is underutilized in 3/Oblivion or is something that would be easily added by a modder with no to decent budget, let alone proper developers with acces to the source code and a pretty big budget.
My argument is that most of the time spent during game development is to build and refine the setting but more importantly to properly setup the engine to work. Along with Play-testing. Fallout 2 had a quarter of the time to be made than Fallout 1 yet was like 3-4 times as big with a shitton of new assets.
I also said they utilized a shitton of the Fallout 3 assets, which they did, because it would've been stupid not to. But not that they made none,they made a ton, just that they also had a gigantic headstart.
Basically the 18 Months isn't as bad as it's made out to be assuming you have any knowledge about how games are made. People like to pretend they spawned the game out of thin air.
@@karlkoskie2891 The DLCs were made after the initial 18 months. Ironsights were added to FO3 in the space of 1-2 weeks by a single hobbyist modder.
The rest are extremely basic models, and things like perks take 10 minutes to add in *if you're slow*.

While I do think all the fallout games are enjoyable in their own ways. In terms of story, rpg mechanics, and depth. New vegas is easily the best 3D fallout.
The writing and world building is unmatched, fallout 3 has more atmosphere for me and a nostalgia connection which is why it's my fave, FO4 has a very good gameplay loop 💪🏻💪🏻

Funny I played Fallout 1 as a kid and hated it since I couldn't read good then picked up 3 it was okay but not anything special then in 2012 I seen NV for $3.99 in gamestop now I have every platinum besides 76 and shelter but I been working on them for years lol but when you have a modded Fallout New Vegas it's hard to turn off the PC and play console
Fallout NV and Prey are the only two "Bethesda" games I've actually enjoyed playing... And they werent even made by Bethesda.

Honestly no... The game in it's vanilla state is rough and I wasn't joking about the crashes it kicks you out of the game almost every 20-30mins.

Also, im surprised youve had such trouble running the game. Ive put 50+ hours on it, on my Legion Go handheld downloaded from gamepass. Ive had 0 crashes, only minor bugs, and im getting 80+ fps consistently in the open world. Even more in the dungeons
Honestly the most buggy run of a game I have ever played, I know most of my issues could be resolved with mods but wanted the vanilla experience 💪🏻👔

4. Honest Hearts
dead money is definetly the worst imo, but it's more of a case of it being a solid dlc amongst other amazing dlcs

You should try the mod Tale of Two wastelands. It merges 3 and New vegas.
I'd actually recommend against this... 3 is designed around its own perk system, where you get a perk every single level rather than every 2. This makes the game far more annoying to play, since ToTWL uses new vegas' slower leveling system (quests in NV give more exp than 3's do as well).

The get out of jail free card that you mention I didnt mind, because the game lets you choose from 4 main factions being legion, yesman, NCR, mr house, legion and NCR are the only one that give you a blank slate so you dont miss on making a concious choice + is more of a choice than fallout 3 ever had, I love fallou 3 for diferent reasons i love that is more casual, turn my brain off and just play, very few wepon choice, no breaking my head with bullet types, or how this quest will affect another down the road and many other aspects of the game that feel streamlined.
Yeah it seems I went to benny quite late in my play through so for me it felt like a koast minute choice to pick an ending but for others it's like 1/3 into the play through so it could just be a personal gripe 💪🏻👔

Yeah I couldn't do survival in New Vegas or Fallout 4. The only way I was able to do it in Fallout 4 was with mods to basically make it hard mode but with the status effects of eating drinking sleeping

I'm with you on the DLCs, Dead Money is my favorite because its got this spooky horror vibe and its a casino heist and all your heist members are quirky and you can carry back all of the gold if you know what you're doing. Personally my least favorite was Honest Hearts, mostly because there wasn't as much to do in Zion as the other DLCs but its far from bad.
As for Caesar pardoning you, I do think it makes some sense for Caesar's character. He puts a lot of value into strength, so he would be interested in you, and he is the kind of guy who would think he can convince you to change your mind once he explains how the Legion has brought peace to Arizona, albeit peace involving slavery and crucifixion
well i put the buggyness to fact it only had 18 months in development so its whole miracle it even runs as well as it does now and has the quality it does
They did good work and added a lot even with most of it being reused, I respect it just think they should be brought up on all the crashes.
Though that's probably mainly due to bethesdas crappy engine 💪🏻👔

I personally am in the minority. I liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas.
It was the game world for me. Also I got New Vegas at launch and it was buggy AF at the time. I acknowledge that the gameplay mechanics were way better in New Vegas. But the Vegas strip was so tiny and I felt like the map overall was clustered more together than Fallout 3. Felt like the map was huge in 3 and there was more space - granted, shorter development time definitely played into that. I also was glad that there were no metro stations in New Vegas lol.
Writing was fine in both games IMO idk why people hate on the writing in Fallout 3. If they remade Fallout 3 in the Fallout 4 engine I’d be happy… hell if they remade New Vegas in the 4 engine I’d be happy.
Oh and PS… the DLC in New Vegas was the best DLC of any Fallout. Old World Blues FTW.

The game is great it's a love story to the o.g games with bethesda's engine. Now imagine if they actually had time to flesh out all the ideas they had. Easily would have been a top 10 game of all time.

Haven't watched the video but i can say its pretty darn good. I stared playing it for the first time a couple months back. I had never played a fallout game fully nor do i usually like going back to games with old graphics. I started playing this one and got obsessed with the game and lore. Was it buggy at times and made me lose a lot of progress because i didnt save, yeah, but overall i loved the gameplay and story. Tried 3 and its not the same vibe and was getting bored at points. I didnt like the feeling of the map compared to NV. Yet to try any of the others yet
NV is peak it's like the ultimate single player experience haven't played a game even half as amazing that's why I still play it technically never stopped
