I enjoyed this one more than eternal, unpopular opinion but yes i think this game felt more complete and the multiplayer was fun. Doom 2016 was also something new and fresh while eternal built on that, but i already felt burned out after my first playthrough of eternal. Doom 2016 also had snapmap, while lacking compared to classic doom and the modding scene around them , was still a fun experience. I prefer the classics, but playing the final mission and hearing rip and tear was an unforgettable moment.
After starting my eternal play through after this I can already see myself having the same opinion, it adds a lot but I feel it loses some of that classic feel that 2016 had but we will see 💪🏻👔
@@Guyinthetie Eternal is a good game and have some good moments, but it was almost like playing Doom 2 after Ultimate Doom. Some grew to like Eternal better and i respect that. I'm happy that doom managed to maintain a fanbase and grow so much, but at the same time i believe i might be getting ''old'' for the new take on Doom. Slightly noticed in doom 2016 but more on Eternal, it's more chaotic non stop action with arenas while the classic relied more on level exploration and traps that lowered down walls etc. It's more within my preference.
I see what you mean but I still prefer eternal, 2016 just feels too slow for me(I have adhd if you couldn’t tell) 2016 also tends to drag on near the end while every level of eternal makes me feel like I’m on crack although 2016 has much better atmosphere feels like doom 3 but with classic shooter feel
Couldn't agree less. Eternal only had a better singleplayer, nothing more. MP and Horde sucked. 2016 had an SP that's inferior to Eternal, sure, but the game as a whole is much more superior to Eternal. You had an MP with more variety, while it wasn't that great, it was at least much more approachable and less buggy to Eternal. Not to mention, 2016 had the phenomenal snapmap that empowered a lot of replayability. To this day I still create maps whenever I feel like it, as well as visit other ones for nostalgia. Eternal may have done things better in many aspects, visuals, OST, story, gameplay, but you could only ever experience these in it's singleplayer which lacks a lot of replayability; you're technically playing the same thing over and over again with little to no additions or whatsoever. I do like their added feature of slayer skins and podiums, those, in some way, made Eternal interesting and unique. They're also not paid microtransactions, so the game gets a W for that :)
They each have their own charm, but anything is better than 12 years of Spooky Dooky 3.

I love that standard cover is so generic "Main Protagonist" that noone likes it and then there is an absolutely beautiful artwork that's used on Steam front of the game with Doom Guy fighting hordes on demons.

I know this is a 2016 review but if you haven’t played eternal you have to try it out, truly the best FPS when you play it how it’s meant to be played (weapon swapping etc)

@@Guyinthetie In my opinion the game gets better as you play it more and figure out all the mechanics and when to use them. Significantly harder than 2016 at the start but once you figure that stuff out everything starts to flow together so well and it becomes a rhythm
@Guyinthetie The time to kill is much faster in eternal, and the enemy are much faster too, but so are you. Once you figure out the tts for each of the demons the game becomes much easier. The hellknights, dreadknights, and whiplash can die immediately to Lock on rockets, all fodder demons can die immediately to sticky bombs and since there's multiple sticky bombs in one shot they become much easier to take out, the mancubus can die to a quick lock on rockets and super shotgun right after, or throw a bomb to faulter him, throw in a blood punch then super shotgun and boom he's dead. That's the other thing, the *Faulter system* is a big thing in eternal that helps out immensely as bombs, heat blast, blood punch, remote detonater and destroying weak points can faulter the enemy allowing you to set up combos.
The difference between eternal and 2016 is that it is needed in eternal to interact with its systems like managing your ammo and resources, switching weapons more often to preserve ammo and using better weapons for the right job.
where doom 2016 allows you to use any weapon, but even then, an assault rifle isn't even near as effective as using the rocket lauchers, super shotgun and gauss cannon to take out the big enemy so they're both very similar in that they incentivize you to use the superior weapon for this specific instance.

I liked the multiplayer in doom 2016. The snap map custom games were cool too. Plus the character customization was INSANE. 343 industries could learn a thing or two from doom 2016 I think.
Honestly gutted I missed so much of this games online lifespan.. curse overwatch and honestly halo could learn so much from just this game alone! 💪🏻👔

This was one of the first games in a long time where when I beat it, I immediately wanted to replay it.
It had been on my radar as I've always been a fan of the franchise but at the time it came out I was getting pretty busy at work and didn't have a lot of time to play games. So I didn't pick this up until about 2017 or so and I nabbed it for 20 bucks. Needless to say I more than got my money's worth
I absolutely dug the atmosphere, it's still managed to feel kind of creepy and oppressive like Doom 3, but it brought back far more balls to the wall gameplay and reminded me of serious Sam more than anything that doom actually ever did before. But it certainly still felt like it belonged in the franchise.
But this was a game where I felt enticed to actually explore and find secrets rather than feeling like it was something more aggravating than it was worth. I enjoyed replaying it on higher difficulties, I especially enjoyed the arcade mode
I never got into the multiplayer, however this had one of the most well thought out in game level editors that I've ever seen. It reminded me of the old time splitters games. It might not be as good as being able to properly mod the game, but for a lot of console players this offered a tremendous amount of additional content and some people got incredibly creative with what they made
I think that's something that should be talked about a bit more often than it is. But this game in general got me hyped to replay basically the entire series. And it made sure that I did not wait around for a year before playing the sequel. That one seems to be everybody's favorite but honestly I wasn't really a fan of all the platforming or trying to make the game more about cinematic storytelling. It's still awesome but I overall prefer this one and I don't even have to think twice about it

Doom 2016 just like almost everygame before 2017-18 felt smoother and more complete. I also mainly like it because of the style and the graphics. Its so much more brutal and goreier than eternal and the demon deseigns are horrific in a good way

Doom 2016 has a darker more serious tone and the levels feel less cosmic/comical. It also has snap map.
Doom eternal has more of everything with its own spin on multiplayer.
I prefer doom 2016 from an artistic and tone perspective but both have their merits and shortcomings.
Yeah I agree with this, doom 2016 does what it set out to do recreate the original doom experience with modern tech! So far I have personally preferred the dark and gritty style to the more fantastical enternal 💪🏻👔

@@Guyinthetie Thank you I bought both games on pc 100% both of their single player and I thought it was funny to 100% the switch ports too. Doom 4 on Ultra-Violence (I finished it on nightmare too but it really sucked) then Doom Eternal on Nightmare (which gets easy if you practice a lot) I thank @Maka91Productions's videos to help me memorize where the secrets are, I thank @ABritishPotato 's Doom videos for showing me the many ways to take down a marauder (I only care for his Doom videos his recent one about agreeing with the news anchor who trashed on Tetris Kid sucks), I thank @underthemayo's videos for showing me Doom design (again, he's the only youtuber I watch that for only Doom because he is critical to games that are not like doom). I really want to be good as @ABritishPotato and @underthemayo since they really good and beat Doom Eternal on Ultra-Nightmare (or at least British potato did).
I am a decent player and is pretty good but I am no Ultra-Nightmare player. I really want to get the cool skins but I keep dying in the second level by messing around trying to get quick scopes. I realize I need to be more serious and switch more weapons. I have a goal to be at least good as British Potato and Under the Mayo. Will I eventually beat Ultra-Nightmare? Maybe, but I just got to practice. I know this comment is huge but thank you for reading my comment! I love both Doom games if you don't put each on a high pedestal unlike Fallout New Vegas fans are doing with New Vegas, you get to appreciate both Doom games and the original ones! Doom has been my child hood ever since my parents let me play the Doom games on Switch and play Doom on the DS even though I got a switch!

hot take from someone who prefers the original Doom. i dont like the overwatch-like art style, i dont like being forced to listen to exposition in a DOOM game especially when it means im locked in a room, i dont think an upgrade system was necessary, glory keels disrupt the flow constantly and are necessary to finish off enemies or they will sit there and glow like a christmas tree, the game adheres to serious sam design philosophy more than it does doom in that the levels are mainly arenas that throw increasing numbers of enemies at you at the same time. In old doom every level fealt like an experament in level design to challenge you in different ways despite a limmited roster of enemies, this just felt like serious sam with speed boost to me. i love serious sam but this didnt feel like Doom despite everyone telling me that it is. I also loathe the marvel-like heaven vs hell story. i think this game is fine and has really cool stuff, like the music obviously, but this doesn't do Doom for me.

@@Guyinthetieyeah it's kinda a thing, I like to try things up and the curry lasagna is elite man. Use all the same ingredients but use a jar curry sauce instead of a red (maybe 2 jars depending on size) and just add some extra spices to the sauce as jarred sauces are usually pretty bland. Honestly mate it's next level.

DooM has just enough story to make this a game and not a collection of levels and mechanics. That's the way a shooter should be.

I admit DOOM 2016 and ETERNAL are great but for me DOOM is that its rampage but simple. Personally I hate having upgrades on guns. I love that in the first ones you get the guns and you find your way with them like it or not. No need to upgrade suit, weapons. You get gun, you see demon, shoot em up. I understand modern gaming requires more stuff but simple is better when its done right.

Doom 3 was peak for me. I'm not a huge Doom guy and only ever played Doom II and III and they scared me lmao. I never finished Doom 3 I was too scared, but everything about that game was amazing from the graphics to the tone to the enemies to the UI and weapons. Blew my mind at the time and I would put Doom 3 in my top 50 games for sure.
I came in expecting someone taking a more critical look at Doom 1993. Maybe update the title to prevent more confusion like this?

Honestly if doom didn't exist wasd for movement would probably have not existed. For those who don't know some gamer who was playing in a doom tornament desided to use wasd for movement and well won easily due to having alot better control over camera movement and player movement.

I played an old game on the macintosh plus called dark castle. It was a platformer, but the mouse aimed the guys arm for throwing rocks and default movement was WASD - because the mac keyboards did not have arrows/numpad/etc. In addition older games that were multiplayer had WASD for movement for the second player on more than on occasion.
The real travesty is we are still using WASD instead of ESDF or something else, limiting binds somewhat.
It was popularized during quake actually (not invented), by a player named thresh. During a tournament in which John Carmack gave away a Ferrari.

Both are good games, and worth experiencing in their own right. Eternal has more Arcade action and is more replayable, 2016 has a great atmosphere and a fun campaign experience. One important thing to note is doom 2016 will likely run better on a low spec computer.

@@Guyinthetie u just gotta keep moving, be aware of that area and use ur movements, dont bump into demons while sprinting and also be fast after glory killing, like demons usually stand/hover behind u to damage u as soon as u finish glory killing one demon, and most importantly keep weapon swapping like crazy keep shooting till it dies

It changed my life. Easily top 2. I was... disappointed to say the least when I played Eternal. It goes too hard on the warhammer style story; makes the combat gimmicky with the weak points and turns the game survival horror with the resource management and makes you NOT feel like a mythical legendary demon hunter but someone barely surviving it. The bossfights don't hold a candle to the ones in 2016, the music doesn't slap as hard, and the visuals became cartoony. 2016 takes itself very seriously. The horror visuals are breathtaking and the story even though simple has something to say with the characters. Samuel Hayden isn't just some "Seraphim" he is a pragmatic genius with good intentions that does what has to be done. Anyway; looking forward to your Eternal video

The funny thing is that Hugo doesn't even play like that. If you watch his gameplay, he actually sucks at Doom Eternal. Plays on Medium difficulty and still struggles.
Maybe me but I did not feel satisfied with this game. Maybe I am nostalgic but games like Unreal, Quake and a few others seemed more my style and choice in games. I do not fully understand why ppl want to engage demonic games like this. When you peer into the abyss the abyss peers back. Well to each their own I suppose.

Eternal was good but the combat was a bit messier and frantic with all the verticality and ledges to grab in the middle of too many enemies ( in numbers and variety ) spawning. I'm playing again on the games hard mode and the combat just doesn't flow that well when i personally compare it to 2016. It's not that the game is harder than 2016 I mean it's just that it never feels smooth or satisfying for me. I don't die too much in hard but I finish a fight and it doesn't feel like in 2016 where I could possibly finish a large fight without taking damage and feel cool. It just feels like you're alternating things to constantly maintain your stats and meters and stay afloat and I don't wanna go to lower difficulties for that feeling of being a bada$$ like he should feel regardless. 2016 I could see people getting no hit runs but this seems next to impossible to do in eternal. I just feel like with the grenade types, the chainsaw, the flamethrower, weapon mods, glory kills, and bloodpunch its a bit much. Each has a meter or resource it uses and potentially another resource it helps replenish whether it be health, ammo, armor, or using glorykills for health AND to fill bloodpunch. I like the game but it just feels like alot of thinking and things to track in a game where the point is to just Rip and Tear. If there was an option to where enemies just dropped armor, health, and armor in equal measure no matter how you killed them and the extra gadgets and abilities were just for fun or extra damage over time then I may have enjoyed it a lot more. 😂 I can't be the only one to kill an enemy on instinct and then realize I was low on armor or ammo and shoulda belched him and chainsawed him instead.

Mindless gameplay w/o a very good engrossing story = mindless gameplay. There's no real purpose because THE STORY DOESN'T DRAW THE GAMER IN.
I'm a fan of the slower paced Doom 3.
These new games HAVE NO SOUL, so, there's no REAL REPLAY VALUE for me, it's play once , and that's it.
I'm a single player STORY DRIVEN gamer, For me, STORY/CHARACTER/LORE/World Building+ gameplay is key.
My favorite game genre is 1st person shooter SINGLE PLAYER STORY DRIVEN [ !!!!!! ] games. The industry is not producing these games that much at all anymore.
I'm not interested AT ALL in any online functionality, online social multi-player gaming genre, none.
I like serious stories, not comedy, I hate comedy, or cute Disney Nintendo like character style games.

doom 2016 is one of the worst doom games in my opinion

@@Guyinthetie the whole game is the same. all levels are red. everything is made up of arenas. it's more like call of duty: doom warfare. This is not an arcade game.
