It's a great story so far. If anyone actually payed attention they'd realize how interesting and fun it is. Plus they've molded DOOMSLAYER into a really badass character instead of just a lucky space marine AKA doomguy
Really dude, I been playing doom forever and finding out he was the same guy was insane! Ppl say oh he’s a god now oh this story is so boring, Jesus Christ these people don’t have appreciation for anything great, I absolutely love the lore, ppl just want him to be a one sided and honestly pretty lame character? Just annoying to hear
Correction for 21:32. I remember reading an article where it was stated that MachineGames asked if they could make a new Quake game but were offered Wolfenstein instead. I have not been able to find this article and I believe that I have conflated certain details from things I've read over the years. A 2014 Polygon article by Russ Pitts is most likely what I was misremembering. www.polygon.com/features/2014/5/15/5713324/wolfenstein-the-new-order-machine-games
I vaguely remember that being the case as well. If its not from that polygon article perhaps it was an interview when they were doing the Mission Packs for Quake a few years later? I can't seem to find any interviews from Machine Games around the time Quake DOPA released, but I do recall an interview where they gave more details.
What you said about the Accelerator being a lightning gun variant is interesting. I thought it was a careless asset flip when sentinel soldiers were carrying Doom 2016 lightning gun in TAG2 Immora intro
I agree with absolutely everything except for the part about not enjoying the thought of a deeper look into the Doom slayers reasonings for having such hatred for hell, and personally as much as i appreciate the bunny, it never really felt like enough for his anger shown in 2016 and eternal, plus its always been heavily implied that he lost everything including his family along with the removed photo of his wife and child, personally i think showing that amount of loss would fit perfectly with his pure drive to destroy the place and its inhabitants that caused his despare and will to do anything including ascension into demi-godhood in order to take his revenge.
Yeah man crazy how people will sorely look at the combat nothing else, the lore and environment, giant backdrops, how does that not make you love the story, they miss out on a lot than just purely killing things, eternal was godamn beautiful and the lore was badass and deep
It was always logical that Doomguy lost all his friends and family in the invasions, not just his rabbit, the rabbit was just like an easy choice by being so unpredictable, yet an iconic vision of having its head on a stick.
Unfortunately for that portion of the video the timeline of events occurred like this: - My video is published at exactly 3:00 PM EST - Andrew tweets that he is not involved with the game at 5:12 PM EST A hilarious circumstance that I could've avoided had I chosen to publish the video a day later.
Not having Andrew as the composer is a massive mistake Marty is so salty that the soundtrack got so much credit and doesn't want that again even if it's at the games expense. I agree that people completely overrated the soundtrack. In 2016, the gameplay was pretty braindead and kinda boring, but there was way too much electronic garbage in the music, and a few standout tracks. Eternals soundtrack was a million times better but the gameplay was also so much better that the whole "free game with soundtrack" joke also doesn't work at all there either That joke never worked frankly Still absolute career suicide to place as little importance on the soundtrack IN A DOOM GAME as Marty is, just because he's salty that Mick Gordon got too much credit
I think its fair to criticize to lore since Hugo himself said he likes to have a heavy focus on lore. I know people like to throw out the old Carmack quote when shutting discussions for that down but it makes zero sense to hold that same standard today, especially since it was made in an era where story took a back seat in video games and even in the 90s that mindset quickly got phased out. I completely agree with you about TAG2 jumping the shark, I know they wanted TAG 1 and 2 to be bigger but couldn't because of ...the sick... but that doesn't excuse the fact they completely wasted the franchises big bad that fans have wanted to see SINCE THE 90s on a 3 level DLC and a mediocre final boss. This and i also hate how everything became implied Heaven and Hell instead of literal Heaven and Hell from the bible, i wanted to fight biblical demons and angelic horrors not space squid people.
The thing is I feel like even modern games don't necessarily need to have a groundbreaking storyline. Putting effort into innovating and utilizing the interactive nature of a video game through gameplay design is much more engaging for me. That Carmack quote IS a little too exaggerated to be put into practice nowadays, but games 100% could and imo should thrive more with their gameplay. All the story needs to be is cohesive and reasonable. Fighting games, the Ninja Gaiden and DMC series are perfect examples of this. Criticizing is fine, but I feel like we as consumers should expect the gaming medium to not just do what movies and TV shows already do.
I'm really surprised you didn't mention the obvious inspiration by Painkiller. Did you see that spiky rotating weapon in that game that looks pretty similar to Saw-shield, or the Stake gun that looks like this Rail spike thingy? ;)
I think maybe when it comes to "Cinematic origin story" it's more telling of how he became the Doom Guy compared to being some Marine that got fucked on Mars when the UAC fucked around and found out and he had to fight his way through the base, then into Hell and then got stuck there in Doom 64 which is now cannon thanks to Doom Eternal. So perhaps "cinematic origin story" is more leaning towards him becoming this legend in the eyes of all of Argent D'Nurr then him having some wife and kids that die cause his bunny being kill is cannon and maybe, we'll say that. Would be wicked to start the game as Doom Guy, no name or anything, but he's a Marine on Mars and we do a tutorial fighting in pretty standard controls and stuff on Mars as a regular bloke, but after that it sorta skips over some stuff and we find ourselves in the present, sorta like a flashback. I just want more development with the world and all that and if that means Doom Guy talks a little in this I don't care, the story they built is amazing. Yap over
when the 1st riff kicks in at the beginning of the gameplay i absolutely fucking love the direction the sound went. eternal was more like a pig destroyer influence. dark ages sounds more like high on fire (death is this communion to be exact) influence. dark mid evil fantasy matched with mid evil war march metal. fucking send it. those drum fills get me fuckin amped
I can’t believe I never noticed the knight have the green bands, good catch, I’m glad there’s consistency threw eternal, including the unwilling, we are already used to looking for them to stack up so it makes sense
Technically, as part of your concerns, it’s funny how you mention that “I don’t want to see doomguy’s traumatic backstory of losing his wife and kid from the demons” when the story for Doom 2 actually talks about the fact that he did lose his wife and kid, it’s just losing his Pet rabbit Daisy pushed him over of the edge.
That's literally one of the biggest reasons why doomguy was born. but i still don't think they're gonna show that, or atleast show it into the codex entries. That would be interesting too.
Definitely interested to see the new bfg design. I really enjoyed the rage 2 and doom 2016 designs. Considering the game takes place after doom 64 I’m curious to see what/if the unmaker comes back/looks like. That said I wonder if it’ll be the doom 64 design or eternals.
If u could switch like Skyrim it would be a dream come true it's always been my only complaint with doom ever! Players need to be able to scratch that itch too.

Im glad they appear to finding a blend of the best elements from 2016 and eternal. I loved 2016, but only liked eternal. I disliked the aesthetic and floaty nature of eternal, and all the complexities involved with the gameplay. 2016 was metal, and had fun and simple approachable gameplay.
