    The reason why Batman was gonna prioritize Talia and not Gotham was because he's in love with her. Oracle did say "What's with that woman to be the center of your world". Plus, the romantic tension they had when you go meet her. Batman may try to be perfect but he's still human and make mistakes.

      @@GuyinthetieI don't see it that way to be honest.
      Firstly, it was just a moment of weakness, experience or not. There are emotions you can never outgrow, that's how we are. Alfred also said that deep down he knew he was right.
      Secondly, about the Joker part as you said he has been in the job a good few year. The Joker is a much bigger deal in his life than Talia. It was as if he had lost a piece of himself. Well, sure, he loves Talia, but that's The Joker. And we didn't see everything that happened, maybe the assassins took her during the fight, so he didn't even get the chance.

    Asylum is my favorite in the series. Because the game was confined to a specific location it made the experience EXTREMELY personal. There was no distractions, no contrivances, no room for error. Only… the Batman.
    Plus the menu design, legend of Arkham, atmosphere and cast of villains was all just the cherry on top.
    I promise you if Asylum had the combat of the newer games I would NEVER touch the sequels ever again.
    P.s. - the only complaint I have was the undercooked boss fights.

    • @sigiligus
      @sigiligus 7 месяцев назад +2

      Agreed, except for the fact that Asylum does have garbage boss fights. Open world games can be fun and have a shitload of content, but I’m about sick of every game having to be open world. A well thought out game with a focused vision and deliberate pacing often leaves a bigger impact than a sprawling open area to explore.

    In the opening section of the game where you are walking as Bruce Wayne through line A the thug in front of you forms a finger gun at you while saying "Wayne, you're on my list"
    That's Deadshot, who's side mission details how he had a list of political prisoners to assassinate, one of whom was Bruce Wayne
    You can also find Azrael watching you from above as you're to greet Jack Rdyer in the opening section
    Edit: To be fair what makes the Zsasz mission compelling & memorable is the way his backstory was expertly written, directed, & voice acted

    A great word that’s used to describe the difference between Arkham Asylum and City would be the atmosphere. City to me still felt very comic booky, but the atmosphere of the asylum was missing. The third main character beyond Batman and the Joker was the asylum itself

    To me, the main problem with the side quests is that they're mostly random: you randomly find Hush's victims, you randomly find Azrael, you randomly get Oracle tell you about Deadshot. It would have been great if every one of them was like the Mad Hatter one: he appears in a main cutscene, immediately after the quest triggers and you have a reason tied to the main story to go there. I'd also make them mandatory, without side and main objectives (only the very loose ones should be optional, like the political prisoners getting beat, which you find anyway while flying around to your destination and doesn't lead you on a completely different trail for a while, and the Riddler's trophy, that should start his hostages quest only after you found every single one and every riddle [maybe make a little less?]. Also Zsasz could interfere and make all the phone calls in one go, making you fly around the city frantically and immediately get him. You could find Hush and Deadshot's victims right out of main story buildings after you've completed them, and organically solve those quests, and so on).
    I guess the objective was to make you feel the complete anarchy of a city run by criminals by putting stones in your way, but what's the drama about if you can just skip those for later? Think about Batman dying from Joker's blood and finding Hush's trail, deciding that he wants to get him because of how mad the idea he's a killer made him; or, that dialogue about him may be the killer after Ra's al Ghul and Mad Hatter hallucinations.
    P.S.: I disagree on the contradictory behaviour some characters have, I find it really interesting. First, we see that Batman is really nervous from the get go: he opposes Arkham City so much that he put his civil persona on the line and aslo witnessed how Strange is basically omnipotent, putting whoever he wants into the City because he uses a private organization as police; also, going on you find out Strange is funding the criminal warfare to activate Protocol 10; ALSO, you get hallucinated a lot, your blood is poisoned, people are betraying you from every corner. If Batman at the beginning is so pissed off he abuses Harley while she's crying the (fake) Joker's death, at the end he can't take it anymore and just flips. However, we understand he takes a hold of himself again while going through Wonder Tower.
    Also, Batman's monologue about Joker being recidive logically leads to him not saving him this time, and Joker is way too happy to acknowledge he sees the world like him for once. He dies becaues he doesn't believe in people, whereas Batman would have saved him anyway. Also, that "you wanna hear somethin' funny" as Joker is dying is really moving to me.
    Also the plot twist about Strange being Ra's puppet works for me: cleansing the world from the scum with genocide is Ra's mission in general, so we don't have two villains doing the exact same thing because they're not very creative, but working in tandem. This doesn't diminish Strange because he has different reasons to do it: while Ra's want to cleanse the world as fast as he can, because after six hundred years he's starting to lose his mind and Batman won't take his place, so he has to find another successor or just blow up everyone he doesn't like, Strange does it to defeat Batman on his own playground and trying to demonstrate how his methods are ineffective comparated to his. Strange wants the glory and reputation, Ra's wants to fulfill a personal objective.
    Strange motivations and actions feel also similar to The Riddler, but he's different too because he fights Batman on a more abstract intellectual level, and most importantly, he cheats a lot. Strange is actually doing the stuff, Riddler is looking for the short way.
    I understand though that one major problem already Asylum had and this game elevates to maximum power is that contextualization isn't mandatory: you don't understand Penguin and Joker's feud unless you solve the riddles, you don't get the Catwoman-Two Face background in the same way, you also don't get any of Strange confrontations with other villains unless you do side stuff, although those registrations explain a lot of the characters and of Strange himself. Without getting any of it, you just flow from one villain to another; a situation Asylum brilliantly solved making the general atmosphere looking like a long nightmare and emphasizing the villain's symbolic nature (Scarecrow is fear, Croc is rage, Harley is madness, Joker is chaos, Ivy is misanthropy, as all the Asylum is a place where the sins of humanity are hidden from the public).
    Getting that contextualization throughout the game makes the story much more exciting and deep, while making it optional just makes it nearly useless. It seems to me Rocksteady was way too focused to abide to games' standards and create a perfect videogame, instead of a perfect experience (let's not forget they were born over the ashes of another failed game development studio, they definitely found in this saga their redemption).

    This game is probably my favourite game of all time and there's no way I'd rank it below Asylum. Yes it is partially because I played this game first and also got it as a birthday present from my brother, but I also just think it is the better game. Open-world is really fun to explore, especially after you get the grapnel boost upgrade, I prefer the game not looking as cartoony as well. Henchmen with guns are not as weakened as you say, since they introduce stuff like landmines, thermal goggles and disruptors which make things more difficult and force you to re-strategize. Having more gadgets also make encounters more fun as you have more options.
    I think the story's really cool even if it has a few problems, but the Joker twist is done really well. Also I cannot for the life of me agree with your take on the side missions since they are clearly explained to be side missions, you can do them whenever you want and are optional. If they tried to tie all of that stuff into the main story it would be a mess. I can agree that some of the side missions aren't that great (Deadshot's is mostly good it's just the boss that sucks) but they allow for interesting gameplay changes as well as exposure to other characters. Zsasz' is really cool because of the story it tells with him explaining his backstory. It can also easily be done in spurts rather than all the phone calls after one another, making it less repetitive. That's also something I like, the fact that most of the missions can be developed on here and there, once you start one you don't have to complete it right away.
    Also this game introduced the slide, something I use a ton for combat and mobility. I always find it a tad annoying to play Asylum without it.

    • @Guyinthetie
      @Guyinthetie  7 месяцев назад

      The slide is a mainstay for sure! If only to get through vents faster haha, the side missions I get what you mean but they feel hollow to me like they were added last minute for extra content rather than being fleshed out mini stories if that makes sense

    I’ve felt that way about this game compared to Asylum for years, City is great but Asylum is just so much tighter and feels so much more unique and fun than City imo. Asylum just scratches my Batman fan itch more than City, even with its more simple gameplay. I enjoyed City’s twist and turns in its story, but Asylum as a whole made sense and was asatisfying story despite its simplicity. Plus the more stripped down gameplay in Asylum felt more Batman-like in how truly careful you had to be, which kinda goes away in future games I feel.

    So I bought both games second hand last month and played through both consecutively. I played them at a friend’s house when I was younger but I never played the entire game until now. I like the combat system and the random chatter amongst goons in city. The big map does add something but I prefer the map in asylum. The side quests in city fall short but I do like that the riddler actually appears in city and his rooms are really fun to get through (you should’ve mentioned the riddler rooms). But overall I agree that less was more in asylum and the atmosphere was just was better. If asylum had city’s combat system it would be as close to perfection as a game could be.

      Completely agree with you on this! Didn't really mention the rooms for riddler as I'm not a fan of collectibles so I didn't really experience them, I liked asylum cause it was smaller to find the trophy's and you get the puzzles in each room here it's just a collect fest

    I got this game when I was about 10 years old, it was the 3rd game I'd ever gotten for the ps3 from my uncle (and at this point my mum was very anti M rated stuff but she let me play this one as it was a gift), I never played asylum by this point and didn't realise it was a trilogy until Arkham knight came out when I was older (don't judge me my ps3 was the faster computer in that house by this point and only played through the story) but jesus christ this game was great it was my first major introduction to batman and it was great. I've since gone back and played asylum, and played city again, played through knight again not saying the side content is better than asylum or knight. But the story alone is worth it. Asylum definitely has the best story overall, knight has the best gameplay (the tank can get annoying at points but it's still fun and done well enough) but overall batman Arkham city is a great combo of both gameplay and a better story than knight overall. Return to arkham did improve on the gameplay a bit on ps4 so theres that too

Between my first and second play throughs of both, I played Knight about 75 times. Now I like City much more, ironically because of the difficulty of getting 100%. Well put together video and you've earned my subscription, but I have two things I disagree with.
    1. Batman reacting that way to the possibility of Talia's death isn't weird when you realize that he actually loves her in this universe, so his out-of-character reaction is rather a telltale of how deeply he cares for her.
    2. Never saw Ra's-Al-Ghul as the main villain, it's Joker - again. The chaos of Protocol 10 also makes more sense for Ra's and not Hugo Strange. He wasn't okay with Protocol 10 since he was actually trying to stop it the entire game? It was one moment of weakness.

    One thing you didn't mention was what a mess they made of the menus compared to Arkham Asylum. I had 0 complaints about the menus in Asylum and didn't mind spending time browsing through them, but in Arkham City I basically have nothing but complaints.
    - The character profiles are mostly just copied and pasted from Asylum.
    - The character models are in-game 3D models instead of the custom 2D artwork in Asylum.
    - Instead of finding interview tapes in the overworld and listening to them as you unlock them, you have to complete a row of riddler challenges to unlock each one. Not only does this mean that you'll unlock them very late into the game, but you also have to visit the specific tab in the Riddler menu with the completed row in order to unlock the tape, and there is nothing to indicate that you can or should do this. In other words, you'll probably unlock many tapes all at once and have to listen to them all in a row, which isn't as interesting as spacing them out. The tapes are also more about the story of Arkham City specifically, unlike Asylum where they felt more like a showcase of the personalities of the game's villains.
    - Solving riddles in City unlocks backstory about Arkham City instead of character profiles. Each riddle is tied to a specific story, some of which are split into multiple parts across different riddles, making it really difficult to make sense of what you're reading.
    - The upgrade screen is split into multiple tabs, and most of the space is taken up by things you already have unlocked from the start of the game, or stuff that you unlock automatically as you go, which makes it hard to find what you're looking for.
    I always thought Arkham Asylum was the best game in the series. The story was simplicity itself; the Joker is running Arkham Asylum and you have to catch him. The game fills the available space perfectly, giving you nothing more or less than the entire Arkham Asylum to roam around in. It also allows multiple villains to take part with no contrivances required, as you would expect to run into any one of them in the Asylum. Arkham City on the other hand starts with the borderline nonsensical notion of Strange's Arkham City project, and in the City you get to visit such places as... a museum, a courthouse, a chuch and a steel mill? It's not exactly exciting to explore such locations compared to Arkham Asylum, which is a location anybody will recognize and associate with Batman in an instant. And while Asylum might get flak for the execution of the final boss fight with Joker, it is at least conceptually strong, in contrast to the final fight with an out-of-nowhere Clayface, which might be stronger in execution, but a weak concept for a final boss overall (even if the twist is good).
    I also agree that the side missions are mostly annoying and take away from the focus and stakes of the story. Nothing like trying to reach a Riddler trophy while being simultaneously taunted by a nearby goon and being stalked by a Tyger helicopter, while the game is giving you instructions on how to use the grapnel boost and Zsasz's phone rings in the distance. Talk about distracting. It's not a bad game; they made improvements to the gameplay and the Mr. Freeze fight was cool. But overall I found it disappointing compared to Arkham Asylum, which I never get tired of playing.

    • @octodaddy877
      @octodaddy877 7 месяцев назад

      I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I loved the setting of Arkham City's highly militarized urban gang warfare. Sure, I guess the locations you visit aren't inherently unique and distinctive, but I thought it was pretty cool to go through them and see how they've been taken over by the gangs; Penguin's exhibits in his museum, Two-Face's show trial at the courthouse, and Joker's Funland in the steel mill.

    Only complaint about city and the rest of the Arkham games after asylum, is that they ditched the comic book style ui and visuals

    • @Guyinthetie
      @Guyinthetie  7 месяцев назад

      Yes!! Something as simple as the combo counter in asylum looked straight out of a comic book and City goes for generic hightech UI instead

    joker is sick because he is a hardtime addict of mystery chemicals and the titan reacted with his blood which is making him like the guy that was blasted with radiation and kept alive for 2 months

      Never thought of the titan mixing with the chemicals in him from the plant tbh

    Still a missed opportunity to make a game entirely from the perspective of Harley.

    tone-wise the series lost a lof of grit that was present in Asylum but City has the best gameplay and challenge maps, Origins is a close second because of mostly being the same, in some aspects they did learn from what people liked about City

      I agree gameplay wise the series just gets better, story-wise I feel they start to fall short

    I loved city so much more than any of the other 3 games but recently it hasn’t been as good and my thoughts have changed drastically about each since. But I still think that I prefer city>asylum. I can’t wait for origins and then knight review.

      I always thought city was the peak but the same as you my opinion has changed over the years and I rate asylum more now, Origins will be interesting

    I did like all the Arkham games a lot but Arkham knight was 100% my favourite

      Haven't heard many people put knight at the top of the list that's super interesting 🤔

      @@Guyinthetie I just love the side missions and exploration of the map ( I also love the Arkham knight (character) and knights version of scarecrow)

    I’m currently working on the 100% for this game and the campaigns are about to make me implode. Also, Asylum>City.
