      Well, half right. It *is* a country song and was a huge hit on the country charts when first released by Porter Wagner, I think. But you are right, that this not a “church” song. He wakes up to the 4 gray walls that (now) surround him and realizes his memories were a dream. "For there's a guard, and a sad old heartbreak. On and on I'll walk at daybreak. . ." Is about a convicted man knowing he'll die at daybreak because of that sad old heartbreak. He remembers home and how it was, but he's not going to actually see it, only be sent back home to be buried under that old oak tree at his funeral. A lot of reactors miss that too.

      @@Rick-m4w I think we've all missed stuff in songs on first listens, and most of us don't do our listening on-camera with tens of thousands of people watching us with bated breath, waiting for us to react satisfactorily to a favorite bit. Heck, there are songs I listened to for years before I realized what they were actually singing about. It happens. Given how much J&A do get in songs -- especially given that 2-ish years ago, they couldn't have told you who any of these people were and hadn't heard most of these genres let alone songs -- I think people in the comments here could chill and cut them a little slack.
      Also, it's worth remembering that these folks have full-time jobs, are parents to three young children (including a toddler), have actual, normal lives around all that, and still make time to record and upload three videos a day that we get to watch for free. The fact that they've kept up this schedule for nearly 3 years is actually pretty impressive. If they very occasionally miss a song or pick the wrong video, is it really that big a deal?

    Curly Putman wrote this song. Another well known song of his that you guys have reacted to is "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Here's more about the meaning of this song that may have been missed:
    "The song is about a man who returns home after a long time and is welcomed by his family and friends. However, the final verse reveals that the man is actually in prison on death row and daydreaming about his homecoming. The song's final line, “Yes, they'll all come to see me, In the shade of that old oak tree, As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home” refers to the man's burial in his hometown after his execution."

    Sir Tom Jones (among another couple of giants with one being the great Irma Thomas, who'd unfortunately pared a few years ago.) was featured in a special that was with Hugh Laurie (Dr. House) on Hugh's trip to New Orleans for the first time on a music journey. (Quite literally) It was a public television fund-raising event. DEFINITELY check it out. It's about an hour long, and you're left wanting more when it ends. (I've probably watched it 5 times in it's completion, and countless clip views.)

    This WAS a country hit first made popular by Porter Wagoner but covered by a lot of singers. Back in the 60s a lot of pop singers would take a country hit and cover it as pop music such as "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" which was a country hit for Mel Tillis, spoofed by the Geezinslaws in "Chubby, Please Take Your Love to Town, and then made into a pop hit by Kenny Rogers.

    I believe Porter Wagner had a hit with this song. This song is oft-covered, but Tom Jones’ version is my favorite. Tom Jones has dabbled quite a bit in country, and he really does embody the songs.
    Just in case the plot was missed, we slowly find out that the narrator is reminiscing because he is in prison, on death row, and soon to be buried in that “green, green grass of home” where people can visit him.

    • @cliffwheeler7357

      The song was written by Curly Putnam Jnr. Porter Wagoner (not Wagner) had a number 4 hit with it, but he definitely did not write it.

    Written by Nashville songwriter Curly Putman, the words to Green, Green, Grass of Home tell the tale of a condemned prisoner who is longing to escape to the green, green grass of home. At the end of the song, it was revealed that the man is facing execution, and he will be coming home only to be buried.

    This song has been covered by a lot of people since the mid 60's. It was primarily a Country song and I think I heard it first by Merle Haggard. Tom Jones probably sold it the most over a couple of different genres and charts. I think you guys missed that he awoke to Four Gray Walls that surround me, and realizes he was only dreaming. There's a Guard and a sad old Padre', and they'll walk at Daybreak. Sometimes you have to listen to the song and the tone of the lyrics to understand, he is in prison and facing his execution. Then..... as they lay me beneath the green, green grass of home.

    I think his Welch accent fooled you in the soliloquy before the last verse. The lines are "awake and look around me, at 4 gray walls that surround me, and I realize I was only dreaming. There's a guard, and a sad old padre" who will walk him to his execution, then he will be laid beneath the green green grass of home.

  • @johnplaysgames3120
    @johnplaysgames3120 4 месяца назад +3

    To be fair to J&A, Tom's accent in the spoken word section makes it almost sound like he's saying "There's a god and a sad, old padre" instead of "there's a guard and a sad, old padre," so I can understand how people might miss the twist on a first listen and not realize that he's in prison and soon to be executed. If you miss the "guard" context -- especially if you heard "god" instead -- I can see how it would be easy to misinterpret the rest as simply being about a man who's dreaming of home, nostalgic for home, and planning to be buried under his favorite tree from childhood when he (eventually, possibly many years from now) passes away. I mean, the language used in the lyrics *insinuates* what's going on with context clues but doesn't necessarily say it straight-out enough to correct mishearing the beginning. And it probably didn't help the interpretation that they were already hearing it as church-ish music, which would just reinforce the idea that he said "god" and is talking about something sweet, spiritual, and nostalgic.
    And you know what? It happens. Heck, there are songs that I listened to for years before I realized what was actually being sung about. It happens to us all. The difference is that most of us aren't listening to songs for the first time on-camera, in front of tens of thousands of people all waiting with bated breath for us to react satisfactorily to their favorite bit.
    So, while I get the disappointment at not getting a reaction to the twist in the song -- and, let's be real, that's the part we were all waiting for with this one -- I think some of the people in these comments could maybe chill a little and cut these folks some slack.
