The issue is that in the past when you had strict voter ID laws they would then make it extremely difficult to get the ID. Either by making it expensive. Making it a long drawn out process. Or by making it difficult by only having offices to get the ID in certain neighborhoods while other neighborhoods have to drive and take time off work to get an ID. The ID isn't the problem. A great example is in conservative states where they are trying to ban abortion. They remove almost all the clinics so now if you need one you have to take longer time off work and drive to the nearest one which could be 50 miles or more away. An ID should be needed. But the ability to get that ID should be easy and efficient. Also voting day should be a federal holiday so that nobody has to worry about taking off work to go vote.

No, I don't think it makes the Democrats look weak. It makes it look like they are fighting against simple voting protections because they are benefiting from the current system. Vote harvesting is what I believe to be the biggest threat to voting. Democrats having been pushing to allow unlimited possession of ballots by non-government people. This allows third parties that have a stake in the election to have unsupervised access to ballots and to have the ability to manipulate elections through coercion, intimidation, theft and forgery. Does limiting vote harvesting to members of the voter's family, people that they live with, and sometimes neighbors really impact the voter? I can't see how because they literally can just put it in their mailbox without even needing a stamp. How many times are old people taken advantage of by door to door scammers?
No, I don't think this makes Democrats look weak. More the opposite. Democrats had become frustrated from not getting to implement many of the programs they wanted over the last few decades and seem to have adopted a win at all costs no matter the consequences approach, which is alienating half the country and they may face a big backlash in the midterms. And your argument that "more people are on the left, so more people seem to see it the way I do".
