- The requirement to show identification in order to vote has become a topic of heated debate in recent years. Proponents argue that voter ID laws protect our elections from fraud, while opponents say these laws disenfranchise some eligible voters. Professor Derek Muller of Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law and Professor Daniel P. Tokaji of The Ohio State University’s Michael E. Moritz College of Law present differing views on the pros and cons of voter ID laws.

My biggest argument... If you dont have photo ID... Not being able to vote is the least of your concerns
Well people in inner city’s that don’t need a car and have everything very accessible to them may not need a license which is a lot of Americans for some Americans a car is a luxury a license is the most common identification card some people have a harder time traveling to a dmv especially if they have a job and going to the dmv would require taking leave from work most people can’t leave work because a day missed may mean not food on the the table for a week after bills there’s a lot of consider i know a lot of people think it’s simple and don’t forget about the poor people who loose a security card and or moved around so much they don’t have birth certificates and aren’t felons there’s a lot of factors u don’t consider when u have. Everything u need already , if they want voter id they need to make it very simple and Easy to get one

@@HardWorkpaysofff do they have bank account? credit card? going to school? having a valid job? rent? insurance? last time i got my real ID I paid $36 for it. I just needed to submit 3 different documents online to prove I am who I am (bank statement, health insurance letter, and my current ID at the time). because I already submitted documents online I just had to wait 15 mins on appointment line at DMV, while my friend waited 3 hours.
That's kinda suck for someone who fits your description as above. But anyone who has some sense of responsibility will find a way to get the documents needed. If anyone else who doesn't even have the responsibility to go out there, get the simplest universal form (ID) for themselves, they should not be voting, I ain't gonna trust their vote.
Just like what OP said, you vote ONCE every two years. How the hell do you live within those 2 years? Of course there are people having difficulties (elderly, people in nursing home, disable people, homeless people, people who have hard time commuting), but where is the concern that people can't do none of that shit above because they having no ID? @@alanaplatt but you can get an ID card. I don't have a drivers license but I got my ID card registered to me in less than 15 minute at the DMV. *I'm latino, live in a predominately republican county and never had an issue with voting.

Over here in The Netherlands, we need to present our passport or driver's license, and a voter pass in order to vote at a polling station. If you lose the latter, you'll just be sent back home without having voted. Simple as that.
Why should the U.S be any different?
(Edit: I should probably clarify that the 'voter pass' is not a piece of paper that allows you to vote in every election. If you are a Dutch citizen, you get one for each election by mail. It basically summons you to the polling station, although you're not legally obligated to vote. It's just an extra measure to prevent someone with a forged passport from voting.)
How hard is it to get ID there though? Here in the US, if your birth certificate and your social security card gets lost (for example, maybe a house fire), it's a hard process to get them back and they're required for an ID. You have to take time off work to go down to the SOS for pretty much a whole day and hope they give you another one. Not to mention for those in poverty, some states charge a lot for an ID or Drivers License.
Voter ID isn't the problem, the lack of access to it is. If we removed all of these barriers to get a voter ID card, they wouldn't be remotely problematic. The problem is, the politicians fighting for Voter ID here already know this, which is why they aren't also fighting to remove these barriers.
I got my ID at 18, it took 2 months just to get all the things I needed together for it, and I was lucky enough at the time to have the time to go do all this stuff. Not everybody does.

@@TheOfficialSlimber any responsible person has their social security, birth certificate and passport stored in a safe place. If there is an incident like a house fire and all that stuff is destroyed there are steps (which can be difficult) to take to get new copies of those documents. That is not stopping people from getting IDs there aren’t enough ppl losing these papers like that to not require an ID to vote. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, it is very accessible to get an ID. You can’t say “oh well people lose these documents in things like house fires so we shouldn’t require an ID to vote”. Furthermore people say you don’t have time to take off work to get an ID but I have never worked a full time job in my life that did not require me to provide my social security and ID in the first place. If you want to vote, have some responsibility, go get your ID if you for some strange reason don’t have one already and go vote. The only people who would be affected by requiring an ID is non US citizens trying to vote or people who endured some unfortunate event like having their house burned down and losing all the legal documents required to get an ID coincidentally before an election which I guarantee does not happen enough to affect a certain demographic of voters.
You need an ID to buy alcohol, you need an ID to buy cigarettes, you need an ID to buy certain over the counter medicines, you need an ID to buy and watch R rated films, and you need an ID to drive a vehicle. There are plenty of instances in the world where you need an ID to prove who you are. It’s silly and downright comical to suggest that you need an ID for those things. But when it comes to one of the most important fabrics of American society in terms of voting you don’t need ID at all. Every other developed country in the world requires it’s citizens to show some ID to prove they are in fact citizens of said nation.

Don’t forget, you need an ID to purchase a gun, and that is a right outlined in the Constitution.
You need an ID to open a bank account, cash a check, obtain a credit card, accept a parcel, get a phone contract, have services like the internet, get a job. Pretty much anything associated with your name requires some sort of ID for verification. If someone does not have an ID, they are screwed and should be obtaining one ASAP!

You would need to be introduced to folks with disabilities, very poor, elderly and some rural folks. Just because you haven't met them in life, doesn't mean they do not exist.

I've had an ID since I was 15 even before I got a permit or license. The only reason I could guess for someone not having an ID would be if they weren't supposed to be voting in the first place.
I have a friend who's family is on welfare who might be able to give you some insight. A photo ID is 55 dollars in Washington state (not cheap), and it can take up to three weeks of going in waiting to get served if the offices are packed non stop (pretty inconvenient when you're working 80 hours a week). Some states have dmv's that are only open as few as five days a month.
The US grossly underfunds public services like the DMV, which adds an incredible amount of inconvenience for poorer Americans. Heck, I'm solidly middle class and I waited months to get my new license after I moved because it was such a pain.
Passing ID requirements without greatly expanding access to ID's makes it crystal clear what these laws are about, filtering out a certain class of voter.
🗳According to the new poll, which was published Wednesday, an overwhelming majority of voters-74 percent-support voter ID requirements. Importantly, minority voters, the ones Democrats claim are most affected by the laws, are strongly supportive.
You cannot get welfare, without an ID. (They are provided for free to welfare recipients)..

- rented a place to live
- had an electric bill
- had a bank account
- cashed or written a check,
- bought alcohol legally, (or cigarettes, for that matter)
- boarded a plane,
- bought a cell phone plan,
- been married,
- owned a legal gun,

- rented a car,
- rented an apartment,
- gotten a pay check,
- received food stamps,
- done their military service,
- travelled abroad,
- donated blood,
- gone to high school, college or university,
- receives a pension,
- receives social security, including disability of ANY kind,

Funny how that works. Supposedly it’s just a way to keep poor people from voting….but to get government assistance you need ID. I deal with homeless people and 90% of them have an ID. Can’t tell me it’s impossible to get an ID. I do get there are probably some unusual circumstances, but for 99% of the population it isn’t difficult.
The majority of these things reek of white privilege--not the cohort that's affected by voter ID laws. Some of these items, like applying for SNAP and getting COVID-19 vaccines, actually do not require ID. And requiring ID for things like buying firearms and boarding planes is about safety. Requiring ID for things like cashing lottery tickets or getting credit cards is about fraud. Requiring ID for voting is about nothing but voter suppression, and lawmakers are supposed to maintain and expand our rights. That's their job. They're not supposed to encourage sales of firearms or furniture rentals. That's unrelated, so ID requirements for things like that is not a conflict. You have to consider the reason for the ID policy.

You cite safety as the reason for requiring ID for buying firearms and boarding planes, but couldn't you argue the same for elections? Wouldn't unfair elections be a threat to our safety? And you cite fraud as the reason for lottery tickets and gambling. Well, whether you like it or not, there have been cases of fraud in nearly every election since the beginning of time. As a matter of fact, there is more evidence of voter fraud (no matter how small-scale) than there is evidence that requiring ID to vote = "voter suppression." There are many studies that show there is only an infinitesimal amount of voter fraud. (I'm also pretty sure no one voted on anything in the "beginning of time.") You also seem to be projecting your own racism by the implication that someone would think Black people are "stupid" because they're disadvantaged by systemic racism. Recognizing the outsize negative impact on a certain group does not imply a judgment on their cognitive abilities. It's a comment on their oppression and an encouragement to be an upstander. If you collect welfare or food stamps, stimulus checks, have a bank account, fly on a plane, rent an apartment you have some type of identification. And if you still insist having an ID to vote is a burden, then make voting without an ID to be in person only, where you can swear to your identity. Voter ID is voting protection.
Protecting us from something that we were already protected from, at the poles. You used to have to sign your name in a box that had your actual signature right next to it, for comparison. So even if someone was able to convincingly forge your signature, as soon as you showed up to vote and saw that someone forged your name, the attempted fraud would have been thwarted. I dont need to be protected from something that I was already protected from, right?

The people who make this argument never explain why, although their implication is that black and brown people don't have the time, the money, or the intelligence to acquire a picture ID for themselves. We act like people exist in a fixed state, like if they don’t have a card one day they will never obtain one another day and then be able to vote just fine. There are many ways to access ID and the average person, even in a low-income household, has access to them. Nowadays, there are so many movements surrounding voting that most citizens in this country have some form of ID.
I had to have my ID scanned to be able to drop money off for commissary to a friend thats in jail. Then on the way home i stopped at a store to get a beer. They demanded ID or wouldn't let me purchase any beer. When I last voted and pulled my ID out the lady said we're not allowed to ask for ID. Go figure

I work at a grocery store and it's the law that no matter how old they look if they're under 35 we have to check their ID. In most if not all cases, they're 21 and over but we still check because that's the law so why is it any different to vote with your ID.

You need to have an ID so you can prevent voter fraud! This already happened in New Jersey. If a person values being able to vote they will take the time to do so which would include getting an ID if they don't have one. Also if you are not a US citizen you don't have the right to vote. The difference between a person that comes into this country and becomes a citizen and one that doesn't is skin in the game.

During those same years 142,403,507 Background checks for firearm sale were conducted. Interestingly the percentage equals the percentage of those charged with voter fraud that you mentioned. Do you believe an ID should be required to acquire a firearm since it is possibly a burden to those that do not have an ID?

If you own a car, if you go to a doctor, need to cash a check, direct deposit, use a credit card, file your taxes, banks and lenders, food stamps, school, military any kind of government assistance you have an ID. The tax reform of 1986 required that every dependent age five or older listed on your tax return have their Social Security number. Registering for a Social Security for a newborn is necessary if you want to claim your child as a dependent on your income tax return, open a bank account or buy saving bonds in their name, obtain medical coverage, or apply for government services for your child. The last 3 years before retiring I drove transporting people to hospitals, doctors, and things having to do with Medicaid or medicare. Because they had caught someone using their information to receive medical care for a friend we required them to prove who they were. The majority would say I don't have an ID. I would always reply real nice if you are on Medicaid or Medicare you need to have an ID to apply yet along receive assistance. They would still insist they had no ID until I finally would say then you will have to get out because I can't transport you if I don't know that you are the person on my paperwork. Then they would say something like let me check. And they always had an ID. The only people that don't have IDs are people who are not here legally. I am not going to debate why, but common sense and 74 years on this earth tell me why.

My question is this how many American Citizens do not have some fo9rm of ID? Not people in America that is not relevant. What is is what is the estimated % of American Citizens that have no Official ID. I know that every Shelter and a huge Majority of American Churches have some kind of ID Program. To buy a Gray-hound Bus Ticket you need to show ID. To get a library Card you have to show ID. To enter any Federal building you have to show ID. If you are stopped by the Police you have to show ID or they can hold you for 24 hours to run a W&W Check, Can anyone tell me just how having to show you are permitted to vote IE are an American Citizen is in any way suppresses American Citizens from Voting ???

There is absolutely zero reason ID shouldn’t be used.
You require ID to vote in Canada and it is not controversial at all. I can't recall it ever being discussed by a politician in any party.

A photo ID is 55 dollars in Washington state (not cheap), and it can take up to three weeks of going in waiting to get served if the offices are packed non stop (pretty inconvenient when you're working 80 hours a week). Some states have dmv's that are only open as few as five days a month.

Most arguments against Voter ID laws I've heard are based on the racism of low expectations.
Most reasonably important activities in life require an ID: work, financial transactions, school, etc. It may sound harsh but I don't think I want people who have not taken the time to do that to decide who runs my country. And no, being poor is not an obstacle to that, stop thinking poor people are inferior.

I think mail in votes should abandon 'signature validation' as a way of validating mail in votes. It just seems inefficient that we need a handwriting expert to validate every mail-in vote when simply requiring them to put on some kind of numeric information about themselves like SS number, street address, Voter ID number, etc, etc would be easier to validate than having to find a handwriting expert to examine each signature. It would also eliminate false positives as well as false negatives from the voting system.

Having an ID is required to: drive a car, buy alcohol, open a bank account, fly, obtain a job, apply for welfare, get married, get a cell phone plan, buy certain over the counter medication and much more... Not having an ID is a bigger problem than just not being able to vote. If you truly want to help people, then help them get IDs. If you want to undermine the integrity of our elections, then don't require people to verify their identities prior to voting...

In my country, the Netherlands, you need passport, identification card or driver's license to vote, combined with a voterpass that is send by postal service. Before you can vote, officials check your voterpass and ID, and they compare your ID with your face, to establish that you are, who you say you are. This way we make sure people can't vote twice or that people vote on behalf of someone else without proper authorization. If you want someone to vote on behalf of you, we have a proper procedure for that. The voting process is arranged like this in most European democracies. It prevents fraud and I wouldn't want to have it any other way. Voter fraud destroys democracy from the inside and here in Europe, we think democracy is too important to let that happen. To me as a European, it is hard to imagine why this would be a debate at all in the USA.

It's funny how they say all those things, being an Indian Citizen which is THE largest democracy in the world, may have a growing economy but the still compared to USA the literacy rate is down by a whooping 25% (74% India | 99% USA), the difference in the average quality of life is significantly huge (the people you call underprivileged in US are more well off that 50% of the Indian population easily which is not a small number by any means). And even then with a population of over 1.35 Billion even the poorest of the poor are required to show a PHOTO ID when voting, having a Voter ID just makes the process a lot faster as it basically skips the verification process which as you can see in a population this large is very much needed.
Also a PHOTO ID even in USA is required for almost everything, to get a phone, to open a bank account, to get a job, to get a house, to get a Gun (which i must say is also one of the RIGHTS afforded to the citizens), to get alcohol basically anything to a functioning member of the society and if you are not that maybe you shouldn't be allowed to vote, just like felons are stripped of their right to vote ( I might not be entirely accurate here ) even when they are legal citizen of the Country.
Also to "All Americans have should be allowed to VOTE" - how do you tell if a person is american or not, on that account i personally know people in the states who have voted while being a tourist there and some who have been voting even while being a foreign exchange student, there goes the statistics of not much voter fraud argument down the drain, if you don't know who's voting how can you give any valid/well supported statistics on it.
Let's take an example, you have a bank account, one day you decide to withdraw some money so you go to the bank and ask them for your money, they would ask you for some identification so that no bank fraud occurs, now if suddenly some person starts to demand it saying he doesn't have the ID or he lost it, should the bank just trust him and give him the money because they have had no such frauds (identified) in the recent years or ever. I'll let you answer that.

Looking at the heated dbates from a distance ( Austria) I fail to grasp hwy having an ID to prove ones identity is such a politicial issue. In Vienna ahead of the elections I can either choose to vote by mail ballet or in person. Ballets sent to me have a individual identification signature in it, so it cannot be replicated or misused otherwise. In person voting takes not more then 5 minutes - including possible waiting - and it is always on a sunday , people rather spend a few minutes of their free time on a sunday then to take unpaid leave on a work day, taking part in an essential democratic process should not cost me! In person voting needs an ID, otherwise you cannot place your vote. Mail ballots are only sent to registred individuals, meaning regsistered in the national data base under the control of the ministry of interior - which is non political ecxept for the lead secretary. The right to vote has requirements that have to be met. These is a minimum age to vote. You must be a US resident to vote. Your address has to be within a certain district to vote for members of the House of Reps. and other county and municipal elections.
The process with voting IDs are simple. I should first off point out that you are basically required as a citizen to have an ID. They are cheap to get printed. All the polling worker wants to do is verify that you are who you say you are with the picture, and enter your first and last name to verify that you are registered to vote(which is free). They can then click a button with your info selected to print your ballot.
The problem here is that people are claiming that it somehow is oppressive when in actuality it isn't. If you can't present your valid identification, chances are that you aren't even registered to vote. Alternatively, you can submit a provisional ballot which will be processed manually. Chances are that it won't be counted unless EVERYTHING else is in order.
Top-ranking countries on the democracy index like Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, etc. require photo identification. How come if it is anti-democratic?
The fact that an ID is required to get a gun completely debunks the argument against Voter ID. Being able to purchase and own a firearm is a right just like voting, so why is it okay for purchasing guns but not securing and ensuring your vote counts?

I've had to do it, so have my parents and my great-grandmother as she got older. If you go online you can see all the information you need to have to get an absentee ballot!
Let's see...you need ID to buy alcohol, nicotine, weed and guns. You also need an ID to buy a car, a house, insurance, fishing tags, hunting tags and last but not least, you need ID to prove that you're eligible to work in this country. I think for anything important like this/driving/tobacco/alcohol/firearm it should be required. Hell even some online bitcoin websites require an ID and various verification methods to use it. Paypal requires verification. So many things require some form of ID to use and all of a sudden this one is just unfair?
I live in Indiana, the reddest state in the Midwest, and here all you need to get a license is a birth certificate (there are a lot of alternatives to this, obviously), proof of SSN, and two proofs of address. And that is only if you’re getting a license for the first time or moving in from another state. If you had a license before, you just need to keep your address current. Also IDs are free for those over 18 and BMV branches open at extended hours both on and before Election Day, with credential transactions being the only transactions allowed. We also have early in-person voting and they’re open on Saturdays. If you still can’t vote you just don’t want to.

This whole conversation baffles me i live in Germany and here you need to carry a ID with you if you are over 18 only expeption is your own house/property. If police asks you for your ID and you can't prove that you are who you state you are they will take you to the police station and try to figure out who you are and won't let you go until you or they can prove it.

Voting is a right. Paying for ID, taking time from work to get it etc is a barrier. If the government wants ID they need to set up free and easy access to get one. You don’t have to pay for rights.

@EJ None AZ ID lasts from 2-8 years. It's about $30 for a replacement. CA ID lasts for 2-4 and replacement is about $30 as well. If you let your ID lapse, it is personal choice as its not expensive. Some states give regular ID cards for free so examples, please?
