Fidias: The Growing Delusion of Main Character Syndrome

  • One month ago, a RUclipsr by the name of Fidias flew to Japan in order to film a video called, “I travelled across Japan For Free”. In the video he breaks several laws just for content like begging for money, stealing food, and sneaking on the train and bus without paying. This incident reveals a more disturbing trend on social media that seems to be growing. Individuals seem to be all catching a case of what pop culture likes to call “main character syndrome”. Many posters with this “disease” seem to create content at the expense of other people, treating everyone in their videos like an NPC or background character.

What‘s the line between stalking and making a really entertaining video to meet [insert name here] celebrity?

I think that kind of content is harmful to everyone. What if that video works and then people try to break into their house/bypass security? No, not even what if. When.
I bet they wouldn’t be like, “oh, that guys is just so quirky!” I bet they would feel unsafe.

Approaching them in any "irregular" ways. Just go the same route all the other fans go.
And if you wanna "make a video to meet the celebrity" that's fine, but take it literally, make a video where you are creative and stand out hoping that your idol will notice and seek contact on their own - nothing wrong with that. However as the video is your way to seek contact that means that the part of you 'meeting' them obviously can't be in it.
If they are then its propably rather "a maybe entertaining video about stalking ... celebrity"

That's kind of the problem: American Society rewards shameless, toxic exploitation and behaviours because of their extreme virility. If any normal person had made "that forest" video Paul made years ago, they'd be lucky to working at a McDonald's in a town of 10,000. We literally watched Andrew Tate try to set women back to the 1920s with his misogyny, yet his content prevailed for months until it eventually started having an negative effect on the general masses. It only became too problematic, when we had regular teachers and people on social media making videos about his toxicity infecting their class.

There's nothing more annoying than having some 30 year old man acting as a clown while you'r just doing your job. The problem is that social media turns adult people into adult teenagers. Teens often do stupid things to impress their friends. I did. You grow up and laugh about it over drinks later on. But when Social media started to reward this behavior, it created adult men acting as spoiled teenagers .

I think these people are indicative of this weird point in our culture. In the US at least our whole culture is obsessed with grinding and hustling to try and become a millionaire. It seems like people don’t have hobbies anymore. Everything is a side-hustle or a project. When I was a little kid, I saw Jurassic Park and wanted to become a paleontologist. This is the media young kids are consuming, so they’re growing up wanting to become an influencer. If being obnoxious, violating social mores, and sometimes laws can help you achieve your dream, they see it as just another hurdle.
We’ve put so much emphasis on money, and we’ve grown so disconnected due to technology, this is what we’re left with.

As someone who works with people in debts, I think it's because this ( American ) culture is based on confirmation bias. 'the winner takes ' all makes us forget losers get nothing. If all we see is people who somehow succeeded making lots of money the easy way : Start a business and become a billionaire, act as a clown and become a tik tok celebrity, scam people and get away with it..etc . They'll never consider the possibility of failure. We never hear about all the start-ups that failed, those who got stuck with a few hundred followers, people in debts for life, etc . Even though those are the majority . 70% of start ups fail, and 99% of content social media goes unnoticed. . However kids don't know that. So this endless vicious circle keeps growing, spewing out more and more bitter and disappointed people who believe they'r failures before they even reach 30, just because they'r not famous and rich as they 'deserve to be' .

American society places high value on individualism, personal accolades and excellence, and uniqueness. The problem is the normality and homogeny of actual reality, is treated like a bad thing. So many people are hardwired trying to prove they're different, quirky, or special and to not be boring and normal is what leads to the borderline narcisisstic society issue we are experiencing. If you're working class(lower middle/poor) people love to treat you like trash. The funny thing is, it's not just limited to just the upper class. I can't tell you how many times my own people "check you" for not making money or having skills like and NBA player or a rapper. Americans love cosplaying like they're famous and important because if you're not, you're considered nothing here. Sad part is, they're kinda right.

It's not the point of the video to teach viewers how to stalk celebrities, if it was then the video would surely be taken down by youtube. Videos like that are made because the youtuber set a challenge for himself to beat and make a video about it, I don't really see why Fidias is getting so much hate. If you look at this guy's story, you'll see why he sets extreme challenges for himself, the guy went into the forest with no food no water for 7 days straight, yeah he might be crazy but it really shows how much he can set a goal and do anything to beat it.

It’s a little ironic when people feature their “main character syndrome” on social media because (in my humble opinion) it’s about freeing yourself from the expectations of society as a whole. You free yourself from expectations, things that would deem you either weird or “normal”, and you’re happier for it because you dress a way or do something in a way that pleases yourself instead of others. By posting it onto the internet for clout it creates a sort of… artificial competition. Who can get away with more. Who can do weirder things. You no longer do things that bring *yourself* happiness, you are performing for an audience… are you the Main Character, or are you the “Court’s Fool”?

I remember listening to the Abroad in Japan podcast (featured at the start of your video) and he talked about the number of creators who want to meet you and then immediately get their camera out to make content and how he always refuses. He says he will only make something with someone he's actually hung out with quite a bit first. I think when you're a big creator, people tend to want to piggyback on your success without offering anything in return. These people are looking for a shortcut, whereas when you look at the successful community of RUclipsrs who appear in each other's videos, they almost always had the same beginnings and grew together by helping each other. The people who stalk Mr Beast are like the people who think the way to become successful in business is to ask Elon Musk for a job, rather than building something themselves.
Anyway, true to his word, when Chris Broad (of Abroad in Japan) got the opportunity to hang out with Pewdiepie, he refused to make a video for months, and when he finally featured him in an Abroad in Japan video, he refused to use his name or picture in the thumbnail and title, and even gave him a pseudonym in the video itself. It was quite refreshing to see someone who could have used someone's name to get an extra 10 million views instead just give the biggest RUclipsr out there a little cameo under a pseudonym.

IMO, filming your own adventures and journeys is a great thing so that you can look back on them some day and have a record of them. It fulfills the purpose that keeping a journal used to back in the day, or taking pictures for a photo album. This, to my mind, is a good use of filming one's own life and events. Perhaps you will even show your kids these videos one day.
What makes it empty and shallow is if you feel that the whole world should see it, when it has little to no relevance to anyone outside of your personal life. That turns a nice documentation of your journey into just another "look at me!!"

Most people are not interesting to most other people, and that's completely fine. Attention seeking like this just feels like the person has nothing else to offer.

Content doesn't need to be of good quality or contain any need for artistic integrity as long as people are engaged. As long as the masses keep clicking, scrolling, and engaging with it, it will continue regardless of how much harm it causes.
Case in point of this phenomenon: Twitter
Twitter was supposed to die after Elon acquired it, and to be fair it's definitely hurting financially. However, the platform still retaines most of it's active userbase, because people are so addicted and drawn to engagement, discourse(which fun fact: rarely pays off), and microcelebrity feeling the platform gives them it won't die.

Yeah, I like it especially in the context of the rest of the day/event (what they were doing before and after the fireworks, for example) because to me it's like seeing their day through their eyes, which I find interesting. Like I'm not trying to watch like 30 seconds of random fireworks, but say like 10, in amidst other clips, I enjoy.

Excellent video, a deep dive into a topic that you'd think would be shallow - pretty open and shut - but instead it kind of becomes a pandora's box of emotional, financial, and parasocial impact, particularly on young men and boys. It's very unfortunate. I didn't think I would be able to sympathise with any of the RUclipsrs you covered here but by the end of the essay I kind of... i just felt quite sad for a lot of these guys (even Logan Paul to a certain extent, as I imagine it would be quite unsettling for someone to be so committed to riding the coattails of your success that they just sort of giddily stalk you?).
Also as I watched till the end; my favourite animals are pythons! ball pythons especially are such a delight :)
also have been getting into birdwatching, and magpies are like tiny little dinosaurs

I have seen elements of this on RUclips in the past…
Casey Nystad used to have a gaggle of mostly young fans hanging outside his office - - which he was extremely public about the address of - - and when possible, he would be gracious to them, but was also often busy
I never saw him broadcast a negative interaction but that would not be in his character to do so or his channel brand - - hopefully both.
But you can also see how Casey’s own method of creating interactions that were not always consented to in advance Could contribute to this trend among his acolytes who sought to do the same sort of thing with their own channels.
Another example that came to mind was a RUclipsr. I won’t name who likes to walk around NYC in various neighborhoods and narrate what he finds - - as someone who briefly lived in NYC I really enjoy seeing places again after many years or ones that I never got to see it all.
But in one of his videos, he is surprised to run into another RUclipsr, and they have a brief conversation both filming each other - it seems clear that the other person is a fan and maybe imitator and has contrived to figure out where he was live streaming from and medium there. Unfortunately - - and to be sure this may be because the person I was watching is potentially autistic or at the very least antisocial in the very way that Casey Nystad is not - - L O L - - and he ended up not being clear on what the intentions of this fan of his was, and the fact that he was now the one being filmed, terrified him, and he ended up Running frantically away and catching a subway train to get away.
With my own experience as a blogger and people reading you that you don’t actually know until they introduce themselves to you, I can sort of see how this works in both directions. It was really fun to meet people that I admired, and Drew inspiration from, and I also enjoyed when people said the same of me - - but if I hadn’t heard of them, sometimes it felt like there was an expectation that I would then start to read their content and perhaps link back to them.
This is with a “viewership quote of maybe a couple of thousand people- - it was 20 years ago before social media.
So even at a smaller scale, the awkwardness exists.
But I will finally come to the one that really sits with me and that is the example of the super fan of John Lennon, Mark, David Chapman, Who spent months or even years, essentially celebrity stocking Lennon for autographs, and perhaps the little tidbit of personal interaction with his hero, and the frustration of this not becoming some deeper relationship, appears to have been the reason that Chapman killed him outside the apartment building that Lennon shared with Yoko Ono, in other words, outside his home.
I certainly hope that none of these RUclips stalking incidents eventually lead to a similar tragedy, but I also cannot leave aside my concern that this is the logical endpoint, and potentially the only thing that will get people to really reconsider How they approach their own idols

I’ve been noticing a lot here lately that I’ve been getting recommended a lot of smaller channels, too. I’ve even subscribed to a number of them for the topics they cover despite having less than 1,000 views (some only having 100 with 3-4 comments). I’m glad that RUclips is adjusting their algorithm to where smaller channels can have a better chance now to be seen compared to only being recommended the videos that trend with a high sub count.

Many of us did stupid, publicly obnoxious things to get a rise out of the friends around us as teenagers or even into our early 20s. The difference is that it was our friends, not strangers on the internet, and there was no potential revenue stream attached to it. It wasn't a career prospect. Unfortunately, social media and democratizing an ad-supported video platform monetized human eyeballs in a way never seen before, and these professional nuisances are only created and sustained by the audiences that watch their videos. These people are awful but they're also apparently doing what their audiences want. I'm afraid their audiences mostly skew toward adolescent, tween, and teen boys, and as a former one, that's not a demographic that's going to reach enlightenment and a grow a sense of social responsibility that makes them spurn this kind of content, at least not here in the western world that served as its cradle and now serves as its epicenter. These nuisance streamers aren't a problem with a simple solution. They're a symptom.
