      this seems like an ongoing exploration. like there is far more you can dig into here, and these 21 minutes is just the beginning!
      I hope the next video discusses this topic in more depth and viewer contributions help expand on this idea.
      Grace Helbig was one of my first favourite youtubers. I started watching her whine she was with My Damn Channel - Daily Grace. In recent years it seems she ended up getting a lot of therapy and has now grown so much more self-aware, and older and wiser that she no longer even sees the point in acting like she used to in videos... or even irl. I think she realizes that her new self just isn't as marketable, but she still makes some content for her core "fans" (like me) who genuinely like her for who she is.
      thanks to grace I also ended up liking Hannah Hart and I got exposed to Mamrie and Tyler and Flula and Jenna and Julian and many other youtubers indirectly.
      I've never liked Emma. The first time I heard of her was when I got into Dolan Twins and she was present in their videos. I found her very off-putting and self-centered and closed-minded... and I had zero interest in seeing any more of her than what I saw from Dolan videos. I'm actually surprised to hear from you that she's still going strong - that's how little I've looked at Emma content.
      anyway...It's interesting that you're delving into the authenticity thing here again (seemingly by accident?), and now your observations are so different from what you discussed in your Jenna Marbles video. It may be human nature to be drawn to authenticity, but so many people are also so compelled to mistrust and attack the very authenticity we want most. The youtube audiences demand authentic humans, but can't believe people are being authentic even when it's as real as it gets with someone like Jenna.
      To me this says a lot about society and culture on a large scale... the first world societies seem to be creeping deeper and deeper into narcissistic thinking patterns, and forgetting what real authenticity even looks like. Narcissists have done some REAL damage socially and created a serious mess that fits their perception of the world perfectly but is NOT authentic and causes mental and emotional harm to everyone who gets exposed to it. I know what it's like to be so disoriented and confused by narcissistic flip-floping and gaslighting and crazy rationalizing. I know what it's like to lose sight of what authenticity looks like, to the point that it's just a distant memory and I can only rely on FAITH that I might run into it again one day and I will hopefully recognize it when I do. The world desperately needs more people talking sense and explaining what to look for - people like yourself!
      The trouble with pure authenticity is... as safe as it is, and as much as it meets many of our deepest needs like trust and connection... a truly authentic society is kinda boring. A cushy, privileged, first-world society has very little excitement as it is. Most of us have practically zero survival challenges. Even the people in poverty have food and shelter provided by charities. In ancient Greece they remedied this lack of excitement with gladiator arena fights. Today there are movies, and comic book heros, and video games... but it's not enough. With the modern lack of real-world excitement there are a lot of people out there who crave stimulation so much that they may never let go of lies and manipulation and harm to cause a stir. ...and sadly there are also a lot of sheltered people who were never taught how to navigate such deception, and easily get sucked into the alternate realities created by the actions of those harmful people. the only way to create some healing in such a world, is to explain and get clear on how mental-emotional harm works.. AND provide clear examples of what a truly healthy outlook really looks like, and how to achieve it. We need to understand BOTH types of thinking - not just one or the other - that's the only way people can start to heal our first-world society again.

    See, the problem is everyone is starting with the idea that a good thing is supposed to last forever. It's not. Especially in the entertainment industry, if you ever manage to be a hit, I think that's a success. Just because Ryan Higa and Smosh aren't RUclips giants anymore, it doesn't take away from their success. We can't be on top or in the spotlight forever. Otherwise, no one else would get a chance. Personally, I get really into something for a while, get tired or satisfied, and move on to the next thing. It has nothing to do with when that thing was at its popularity peak. It's more about my own mood of what I'm looking for in that moment and what's happening in my life.

    With Emma in particular, I can remember one pivotal moment that a loud percentage of her fans 'turned on her' or at least criticised her which was her invitation to Paris Fashion Week for the first time some years ago. She was dressed by a luxury label, staying in a 5 star hotel, living her dream life that is not relatable at all, and like so many of the comments are saying, she lost her relatability. The comments on this were all about how she had sold out, she wasn't the same person etc but in reality she was following the natural trajectory of fame, doing things most of us only dream of. Wether she gained a fortune from fame/youtube or from working a lucrative 9-5, people age and grow, they learn things and their personality ad lives evolve with time. I imagine many people hated this as much as everything else, hoping she would stay the young, carefree, relatable YT'ber she started out as which was never going to happen.

    I wonder if the age of the audience has as anything to do with it. If a lifestyle youtuber is young, and attracts mostly teenagers, then after 4-5 years their original audience might be adults. They might have different interests and not have as much time to watch youtubers anymore.
    I know when I was a teenager, I watched a lot of the lifestyle youtubers (I was a very lonely kid). Now that I'm almost thirty, I rather not waste my time watching a random person talk about their life and I'm more aware that many youtubers are full of shit. That's why I mostly watch educational, and more produced comedy chanels now.
    That being said, I don't know what this would mean about lifestyle youtubers who initially started with an adult audience. Are there a lot of those? That's just my observation. I don't know much about current youtube trends and tbh I'm happy that I don't.

    • @electricpurple4112
      @electricpurple4112 2 года назад +16

      I think it's not a thing and just a common theory. As someone grows, they are growing because they are evolving and building on their viewership (naturally people move to different things regardless of age).
      If they are static they aren't growing, they are forever "up and coming". To relate yourself to the rest of all viewers (" I am now thirty and I've decided consciously I don't like this because... i'm THIRTY!") seems like a self-reflective thing and not really part of the whole picture. People sometimes forget that they are not the rest of the world. Personally I only got into watching vlogs at around 30 -- some people manage to be interesting with their editing, their atmosphere creation, and they can give you new perspectives.

      I have the same experience. As I started to become an adult, I began to question a lot of Influencers. As a kid, I watched a lot of Hauls etc, but as I got older, I started questioning these videos and became quite frustrated. Why do you need 3 Lamborghini, a private jet and a whole room full of makeup, that you won't even use?
      Plus, Covid really showed the true face of a lot of Influencers. I respected Emma in that time, because she openly called out Influencers who went to parties during Lockdown or filmed in crowds.
      My watched content really shifted. Instead of stupid skits and consumerism based hauls, I started to watch content that began question these behaviours. And a lot of plant and art videos lol

      Constantly chasing the RUclips algorithm also keeps them from making content they'd actually want to do in order to get ad revenue/sponsorships. KiraTV did an amazing video about the Silk Road dark web and how it got taken down, it got demonetized and he said he would only be making "safe" content because he wouldn't get paid and he has a staff that works with him. I think it's sad when they chase money so hard they can't make what they'd like to make because they have to pay other people working for them.

    I tend to separate RUclipsrs loosely into two groups by the sources of their contents, existence and interest, both of which are quite explanatory. Existence RUclipsrs are those who mostly do vlogs and lifestyle stuffs, while interest RUclipsrs are those who base their contents on their interests or skills such as medicine, culinary, science, gaming, crafts, music, or commentary. In both cases, personalities play important roles in how to keep the audience members following because they feel like they are watching real people while simultaneously not feel bored to death. Existence RUclipsrs tend to end up as discussed in the video because they connect to their audience purely with personalities rather than some common interests. The problem is that RUclipsrs of this type are teens. Therefore, their personalities are still developing and eventually will steer away from the personalities that bring in the audience in the first place.
    Tom Scott is an interesting example. (I pick him because a) I like his contents, and b) you put him in your video.) His very first videos are quite silly and funny videos of him and his friends doing crazy stuffs like making bacon sandwich with a blowtorch or cooking salmon in a dishwasher. However, his contents shifted to educational stuffs when, I think, he did Language Files. The series did well for many reasons. Tom has a degree in linguistics, was a radio show host at university radio station with his friends, and (if I recall correctly) also has a master's in education. The last two points make him a good presenter and science communicator. He goes on to launch many series including some mock game shows, collaborates with so many RUclipsrs and non-RUclipsrs including the Red Arrows and the British Museum, and launches his second channel based on him exploring things he has little or no experience. Tom is an excellent example for a) RUclipsrs who found their niche interests and garner views and fames from them, and b) RUclipsrs who shifted their contents several times while their audience are still intrigued to watch.

To me Ethan grew to fame with the whole " no one is safe from criticism, if you acting dumb I'm going to call you out" to almost like in your face "you are wrong and I am right" and defensive. With Rooster Teeth I just grew away from the channel not because my interest changed but because the videos didn't "feel" the same as they once did for some reason.

      @ronicave8522 2 года назад +5

      So flaunting it would be relatable? I think either way it's a lose-lose scenario for them in many cases, specially if their main appeal was relatability and have much of the content centered around their lives and personality. If they become successful it would get harder and harder to make their experiences relatable. If they try to hide their money and make people believe they are still run of the mill people then can be seen as fake and inauthentic. If they flaunt their wealth they can seem as lacking humility, it also makes them even less relatable to their original audience. It's a though balance.

    The segment about manufacturing authenticity reminds me so much about documentary filmmaking and the theory behind that.
    The moment you capture something on camera, and just by the process of editing, you’re practicing a level of control, which is just unavoidable and so there has been many debates on the truthfulness of documentaries representing its subjects.
    I think it’s important to understand your place within that control. Whether your intent is genuine (like “this is a funny moment, I’d like the audience to see that”) or whether you intend to give the impression that you’re relatable.

    My only problem is that when youtubers feel "ashamed" of their past selves when their past selves were so relatable and it was what made people follow them. I don't expect people to stay the same, I expect them to change but since you're different person now, don't "attack" the person you were because there were people that like you then. Great example of this is Ethan Klein, that constantly talks shit about his past, which means he is also talking shit about his old mates like Frank and Idubzz. Another example in another industry is the God of War developers, that feel like they're super ashamed of pre-2018 GoW when those games were pretty good and even took more risks, compared to how "safe" GoW is now.

They'd do things like edit in lip flaps to match the voice lines better and recolor scenes which caused episodes to take longer to make. They essentially did the work of an official dub just to not credit themselves for it and just consider themselves merely abridgers. You cannot sell something that cannot be recreated and scaled more than once. I've noticed that RUclipsrs whose fame is based on a skill set or product typically do better for longer, but regardless, nothing lasts forever, and expecting that is immature from both the creator and consumer. Along with that I noticed a tragic deep envy of others that encourages people to follow a lot of these RUclipsrs. Like what's the REAL point of "lifestyle vloggers"? A lot of creators leave this platform and ignore the base that they have created on RUclips. That in and of itself comes back to bite them when they choose to go mainstream. They ignore their RUclips fan base or slack in what they produce on this platform. Usually they come back to this platform when their traditional mainstream presents has been exhausted. By that time their audience here will have moved on. Also at times the ugliness of a particular RUclipsr comes out overtime. At which point I feel they haven’t been genuine the entirety of the span of their channel. At this point I just can’t watch them anymore.

I got fascinated about how other people live their lives, their family dynamics, what their house looks like, what are the food they cook and eat, their relationships, what they items they bought in the supermarket, I get to witness how being a youtuber changed their lives and how they can now afford things they've dreamt in the past. I feel like with vlog channels like this, you feel the pressure to have to put 100% of your personality in this content, as fans over time grow a big connection with you and look forward to seeing you do day-to-day things. They may view you as good friends, or even family even thought its over the internet. I feel like it's easier for someone like MrBeast to make content because it doesn't completely rely on their personality and mental state. It may be the challenges or the money that may back it up, like the personality doesn’t really matter with that type of channel at that point. Like if you're having a bad day, you don't have to worry to make content because again it doesn't rely on your content.example going shopping or catching errands with Emma Chamberlain. I feel like RUclipsrs like MrBeast may not feel that pressure of relying so much on their personality, because they'll always have the money and challenges to back them up. It's like they're sense of humor and personality don't even matter that much with those channels.

    • @Silverswitch1
      @Silverswitch1 2 года назад

      That is only the case for youtubers who are funny. For ones that are good at certain games, they will get boring.

      @@Silverswitch1 well it depends. if they are an expert at the game they will still get a fanbase for that game. the ones who arent experts are the ones who need to be funny. and channels that play different games all the time have the most success bc they attract all different audiences. its no wonder the biggest channels on yt are gaming channels.

    Another banger video.
    Smosh is actually gaining popularity again, just not on the main channel, change came after they wemt independent again and their try not to laugh videos which is basically just improv skits. I started watching again because of the authenticity improving, I wouldnt be surprised if others did too

    I SUBSCRIBE to several YTs who don't publish weekly or even monthly, but their content excels, as well as the editing.
    Also, I had a YT channel briefly, just a short-lived personal project - very niche. I'm forming a second one now based on history, but it too will be very niche, but is not intended to be short term. I assume it will grow slowly. And I intend to publish only monthly to facilitate thorough research and to edit as professionally as I can.

    if i had to pick. . . I would say Rosanna Pansino. I still will watch her channel from time to time and follow her on instagram. I just miss Her Nerdy Nummy Series that indcluded more obscure nerdy things. If that makes since. That being said im happy for her and where she is in life. I just recognize that i'm no longer in her target audience anymore. That's more on me than her.

    I’m not Emma’s average demographic but I love 💕 her. I personally enjoy watching the changes she’s going through as she gets older. I’m okay with her uploads when she feels like it as I always find them interesting. The RUclipsrs I’m totally sick of are Joel and Lia or now Those two Brit’s. They’ve aged but their content is as stale as month old bread. The same thing I felt towards the Dolan twins, James Charles and about every makeup RUclipsr. Emma has a very real personality that comes through her videos. I’m actually proud of her now doing not only interviews and modeling also she’s still unique. Nice video you’ve done. I’d never seen your channel before.

    The viewer wants to be entertained and the creator wants to please the viewer and the all mighty algorithm. Sometimes we dress it up as parasocial relationships so that there's a sense of care and humanity involved in the transaction, but when creators get "too big" it seems like that intimacy usually gets lost.
    Simply Nailogical/Cristine recently posted a video ("I'm Not A RUclipsr Anymore") on her main channel about her road to her current evolution. I followed her other content so it wasn't a surprise to see her address the "rebrand," but it was interesting (and absolutely heart-wrenching) to see the behind the scenes of the mental and emotional turmoil she was putting herself through to try to maintain the space she though people looked for in her content.
    Life happens so nobody should take it personally that someone you like to watch changes in a way that doesn't match their individual expectation. I think we all just need to remember that we're all humans no matter which side of the screen we're on.

    I never subscribed to a channel because the RUclipsr was relatable, I subscribed because they were funny, or they make videos about topics that I like.
    Like you for example 😊

    I think it's sad that almost everything always have to grow out of proportion. Things that people do and people in general feel the need to grow and expand. That's why it's refreshing what pewdiepie is currently doing with the vlogs. It's a step back, we can watch his (super privileged ofc) life and just be in some authentic moments. A far cry from his youtube collaborations (red?) and inauthentic gameplay reactions of bad horror games (after he noticed it worked).
    And yeah I usually dont know much of the youtubers you are talking about on this channel but your takes are always insightful and fun. For me it's a fun look to see what young people vibe with these days.
    Xoxo 🥳

    I like watching RUclips bc I feel like I'm able to search for something specific and can watch and pause when I want to. I'm 33 so I remember the days when you had to turn to the TV guide channel and it would endlessly scroll through the shows that were on at that time (and god forbid you just missed the info you were looking for and had to wait for it to come back around again 😩)

    another person who definitely falls into this category is liza koshy. she was one of the most popular youtubers in the ‘golden age of youtube’ (2014-2018), yet when she began her youtube red show, it began to feel as though youtube wasn’t what she actually wanted to do, which is totally valid, but she kept going for it and the content got boring.

    I feel like a lot of the reasons why RUclipsrs lose a lot of their fame has to do with them forgetting what made them famous and/or how to go about their careers with that in mind.
    A RUclipsr like Emma gets famous because of how relatable they are and how easy it is for their audience to for a parasocial relationship with them. When a majority of your audience is there because they feel like they have a personal connection with you, doing things they can’t relate to or can’t parasocially see themselves doing with you alienates them.
    So a RUclipsr like this really only has two options: Continue making RUclips videos on the same, lower budget at the expense of getting to go to glamorous events and places, or start pandering to a new audience that’ll enjoy that kind of content. There’s no happy middle in this where you get to do all these amazing, expensive, and tantalizing things and still get to keep your relatability with your original audience.

    P. S. I didn't know "old Emma", I've started watching her videos not so long ago, I love them and her style in general. This phase is gold.
    P. P. S. I also miss Joana

    I'd say Conan Gray. He started out with fashion, lifestyle, vlogs and music videos made from his bedroom/home town. He then disappeared off the face of youtube and dropped several albums and singles. I didn't really care for his new stuff, which is music, but was perfectly happy with his old stuff. The same trajectory happened with Tessa Violet and Dodie Clark.

    Weirdly the reverse for Joji/Filthy Frank, where there are people that miss the "old" George/Frank who was just a character, and project those feelings to the new/real arguably more relatable George/Joji.
