If you live or work near tracks, put the emergency number for that railway in your phone. If you see a problem or something suspicious on the tracks, call that number. Calling them directly can save minutes over calling 911 to get approaching trains stopped. You can get the emergency number from the railroad's web site or from signs at any grade crossing. If you're unsure if it warrants calling the emergency center, call the emergency center and let THEM decide if it's an emergency. Get the cell phone video AFTER you make the phone call.

I have not researched this at all yet. I did watch Thomas Renz speak about it on bright eon. Supposedly a movie was created in that same town months ago about a train derailing. People and animals are also supposedly dying in a 100 mile radius and they set the spill on fire. They made it airborne and now more people down wind will be affected.

Shunts only work on a Block System type of authority CTC (Control Train Control) /ABS (Automatic Block Signaling). Shuts do not affect TWS ( Track Warrant System ) authority. There is a lot of nuance on how shunting works and affects train movement.
There is no evidence yet on what caused this accident in Ohio. That said, there was a video of a car axel on fire.
The Ohio accident was likely due to an overheated bearing which could have caused the derailment, or it could have been a lack of proper maintenance on the railroad right away. I can tell you that the train crew will be under the microscope and eventually blamed for something that happened 6 hours before this accident that led to this accident and, at a later time, exonerated. However, precision scheduled railroading (PSR) has played into these derailments as a common theme putting the interest of hedge funds ahead of public safety. With PSR you have deferred maintenance with the Locomotives, rolling stock, and track, along with a reduced workforce, plus an overworked and exhausted crew also plays into the equation. Over the past five years, the railroads have reduced the workforce. For 1000 miles traveled, trains require an inspection per FRA regulations, a Class I inspection. Carman performs these inspections. Presently railroad management allows Carman 30 seconds per car, down from 3:30 from five years ago. Under working conditions, Carman can overlook defects with a railcar to meet the time quota.
It would be best if you were asking why safety has taken a back seat to profits.
Final point, please research the Washington incidents. Those two women involved are naturalized US citizens. These two women were tree huggers targeting Coal trains. They were disrupting all rail traffic in the process.

Great info. What about the two other train derailments (TX and SC)? Why did the FBI terrorism taskforce list shunts as an ongoing issue when Washington happened?

@@TheWyomingProject Shunts themselves are not illegal to possess. Any Ferrous material is a shunt. It is the act which and how the shunts, and by whom are used which makes the action illegal. Interfering with any train movement or equipment is Illegal and is a federal offense. Management and track maintainers use shunts for testing crews and the integrity of the track.
The Texas accident involved an 18-wheeler. It was the cause of the accident. These types of accidents happen more than you think. When an accident does occur, the FRA/STB are the ones who conduct the accident investigation.
