The secrets are literally original DOOM secrets I don't see the problem.
Crazy how old is warhammer 40k and not even in the 90s, nor the 2000s and the 2010s we got an doom like shooter for warhammer until this year, specially "this month".
Crazy times we're living, thank god we get this game fr.

It's honestly rather bewildering that it too *THIS* long for someone else to make a 40k FPS game, but hey, better late than never and it looks like Boltgun most certainly delivers on the quality. Great video, Poncha, I was hoping you'd come out with a review for it.

@@PonchaYT not just Warhammer 40k air fantasy video games also indie games from other companies that are not Warhammer games like hollow knight, Anna mutationem, hyper light breaker chivilary 2, risk of rain 2 and vampire survivor but yeah I agree with you this is a golden age of Warhammer games 👍
I loved that each level picked Nurgle or Tzeench alternatively, dedicating chapters to factions would have made each chapter boring - Also, I feel like it is great as an introduction to 40k!! - great and fun review anyway
Tbf with the secrets og doom had more or less the same thing where it was just items or a weapon or smth. Most of the reward was the satisfaction of finding an obscure part of the map or smth.
Also same thing for doom with how sprites were made, except it wasn't a 3d model it was a clay model they took pictures of them cleaned up.
another banging Poncha vid. I played this on release as well and loved it so much. like you said, its nice to get a 40k game that is actually finished.
As someone who is on a Game Art uni course, and one of my modules being pixel art, i loved the execution of the art style. it was very very well done. 10/10 40k game. it will be remembered as one of the greates.

Given how the main menu layout when starting the game shows off your character with his abilities it seems like the devs might have plans for something down the line for this game. Maybe a new character to play or new enemies like the Bloodletter which was teased at the end.

I was meant to get out if bed but instead watched this. A fine decision was made. I do think though you may have been expecting more than what is needed of Boltgun. It really doesn't need a deeper story or different mission objectives. I do love your bit on UI. You don't see many people focus that much on UI and you're right the game does a stellar job of it
I probably do expect too much from boltgun. I guess I’m so use to TRIPPLE A games that require the latest technology and creative story writing that it’s nice to have something that goes back to keeping it simple.
@@PonchaYT I just think a game like Boltgun doesn't require anything strong in the writing department. Rouge Trader will live or die by it's story and Space Marine 2 has enormous shoes to fill
My headcanon is that malum caedo is also a veteran of the tyrannic wars which would explain why he's such a one-man-army even by space marine standards
Love the extra skits and jokes in these, really gives these videos a charm to them.

The whole secrets spread around levels is a feature taken from the original doom games their won't be a higher reward since it's more of a nod to boomer shooters than as a feature for the game.
boltgun is simply perfect! just the orc enemies are missing. but maby we get them in boltgun 2! that would be awesome!

AI Titus and Leandros are things I didn't know I needed in my life
I got 6 major bug yet 1: clipping through a barricade doing a sword attack and could not get out. 2:the chosen get stuck mid resurrection and just stand hand raise doing a austrian painter salute. 3: enemy spawning in each other. 4:getting stuck in in caving in chapter 1 lvl 3 unable to jump out cause the character is stuck in place doing the fall animation. 5:enemy getting cliping in elevator and making in unable to keep down. And 6:chainsword keep buzzing if you die in a slowmotion sword cancel charge using the gravitity gun you need to reload the lvl
Nobody talks about the 4 other dead sternguard in the first mission...
I saw them and thought they had landed before us.

For a short in time, it was overwhelmingly positive. Now it is just very positive. It still holds glory but the glory it deserves was taken away from them.

Thanks for the feed back mate. I want to move away from reviews for a bit and go back to some other content like deep dives which will be next. I think the intro on this was a bit long and I could have moved the irl bit to somewhere else in the video but I feel I’m getting better.
@@PonchaYT Deep Dives are always welcome! You get to have a bit more fun in terms of not worrying about how long the vid is and cover as much or as little of a sub-topic as you want. Your 'The Fall of Eternal Crusade' Deep Dive is still one of my favourites in it's genre. :)
@@4STR4STALeatherBelt yeah I miss doing them. Warhammer games seem to come out frequently these days which I want to cover. Next video 100% is a deep dive. You’re right. I feel a bit more relaxed in them not in a time constraint or just being able to finish it when I like.

As always, as a fan of Slaanesh, I felt a bit disppointed by the absence of She Who Thirsts. But it's a minor complain. Something I genuinely enjoyed, that you mentioned, was the feeling of weight when you move. Like Titus in the first game, you can feel that your guy is heavy.

Honestly, it's better off without Slaanesh and Khorne. It feels 'missing' but Boltgun does not do melee enemies very well at all. It's already struggling with the few that do exist, and all of those 2 types of daemons are melee - it would not go well, at all.
well it's kinda hard to make a 40k game with slaneesh as the main villain without making the game PEGI18

I'm glad that they didn't include that terrible humor from the trailers into the game.
But yeah, the game looks great and seems to be rather lore accurate as well. Though I feel like Terminators should have been boss encounters and not regular goons.

Im not the only one who know to this game will have tons of crazy and heretical mods in the future.
Good point on the enemies. I always dislike it when they just get kind of intermixed in most levels and unfortunately Boltgun does exactly that. Weakens the identity of the different levels and is part of what made the game kind of blur together for me. There are basically no memorable enemy setups or encounters anywhere.
While I do agree we shouldve gotten something from finding all secrets, the secret itself are there literally to make exterminatus difficulty easier. Knowing at least where all vortex grenades are will make your runs easier.
also if this game gets modding support or dlc, I will be so happy 😂
I have some tinfoil on. The starting screen where you pick your difficulty shows both your model and Caedo's abilities. It's a perfect screen for dlc to add a new character like a Blood Angel or Salamander and list what they do differently.
How did I get all the way through the game without realising the charge did damage.
Everything has to have some fancy ass name, nowadays. We used to call games like this: FPS.

I wish they hadn’t gone for the Boomer graphics, even if I literally AM a Boomer, I’ve seen to much of this when I was young and spry playing DOOM, Raise of the Triads, Blood, Hexen, Descent and Duke Nukem 3D. So I’m giving this a pass for now.

Got this one, Mechanicus and Gladius to start my 40K Month and to be honest I am pretty stoke. Shoting heretics and daemon in the face is one thing, but when the game gives you a freaking Melta gun, you know it want you to purge the unclean more than your parents expecting you to clean your room.
Also, will you be talking about the Ork car battle game, I heard it is very Orky and weird.
Tempting to talk about the ork game even though it’s not out. Would you like that? Just me giving thoughts and such?
@@PonchaYT I mean a first impression video maybe? As I saw others tried and their opinion so far are pretty positive with a few flaws. So I think it is worth a try. Just like when you talked about Darktide.

@Poncha Nah man, I was just joking. I think it makes it better cause those were some of your own old minies, which mirrors the game trailer better. I just hate em as a faction, but personal grudges aside, the intro was hilarious and another great example of the insane amount of effort that goes into your videos.

As much as I enjoy this guy's videos he clearly has no knowledge of how Boomer shooters work if he's complaining about the secrets just being power-ups and items or The mission always being find the keys and get out, That's how All Boomer shooters work if they change that then it wouldn't be a boomer shooter. Also I remember booting it up the first time of being excited because I instantly recognized the D-Rok music
It’s a fair point. I know the original doom had figures you could collect but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with expanding upon that with some little warhammer figures you could collect or just a simple skin for collecting them all. I do mention that keeping it simple probably was for the best. Maybe doing anything like that would have not kept it within theme of a retro shooter but I guess where’s the line of innovating from the past and staying true to it. I’m not saying it makes the game bad by any means. Perhaps my opinion is wrong.
@@PonchaYT there were never any figures in the original Doom. You must be thinking of Doom 2016 or Doom eternal, they had collectible figures and skins but the original Doom from 1993 which is what this game is trying to emulate didn't have anything like that none of those games for the '90s did. The only thing I wish this game included was some sort of multiplayer like a deathmatch mode Because that's also a staple of '90s FPS games. Looking back at my original comment it is written a bit more aggressively that I meant to, I'm not calling you out on anything and I still think it was a fantastic video

@@PonchaYT I'd say it doesn't even have to do with age I'm not even 18 yet believe it or not and yeah I'll gladly play the original Doom or quake over Fortnite and COD any day and I wasn't even raised on these games.

I do feel like doom guy is the only one who could claim astreties outside the WH40k lore. Manes did kill everything in hell over his bunny. So its defiently got that over the top style we know and love.

Poncha, as much as I do agree with more stuff needed. It's a $20 doomer shooter. It's perfect for what it does. This game has more variants in enemies than any other Warhammer single player game

@@PonchaYT the only thing i didnt like about the game is how repetitive some boss encounters feel, the urge to kill the bell guys to stop the hordes gets old very fast, aside of that the game is awsome

The biggest flaws in design is that the story the way it's told is quite lame, and the only way you get your character to talk is to hit the taunt button. The lack of any decent story exposition and the lack of voice for your main character is the issue. And finally gameplay wise it should have more enemy variety, get some Slaanesh and Khorne enemies into the game.
I like the look and gunplay but found navigation confusing. I've played all dooms and Duke Nukems so dont tell me its old school design, its just bad.
Without a map, this becomes a slog after awhile.
Ooof. I can tell you haven't played Brutal Doom. The animations here should have been *better* than brutal doom considering the price, but as it stands it doesn't hold a candle to it. It's not even in the same league, or on the same planet in terms of quality. I was really down for the concept but this is super sloppy in comparison. That's why this is a super budget only buy for me. Devs need to read the room, Brutal doom has been the gold standard for these types of games for years, and that's a free mod.
