When I found your channel I just big chopped. You are 6 months “ahead” of me in your natural hair journey. I’m so proud of us! This is the longest I’ve been natural and I plan to grow my hair as long as humanly possible!
This is awesome! I am mixed and for 20 yrs used to relax my hair and do blonde highlights, 8 yrs ago in Nursing school a classmate relentlessly urged me to stop relaxing as she said her cousin had the same texture hair as me and hardly has any hair left due to relaxing , I couldn't imagine how I would tame my thick curly hair but I finally decided to try it, I am so happy I listened to that woman! I am 8 yrs relaxer free! Now I have decided to ditch the bleach and highlights and at 54 I am also growing my hair down my back , I am also free from the belief that you had to have short hair especially after 50, lol, so happy I understand now that we can make our own rules for style and fashion as long as it is kept classy , I'm all in!! 🎉🎉🎉
I adore your minimalist approach to your hair. My hair is literally in twists or braids (with my nautral hair) almost ALL the time. I relate to this so much.
I just came here to say this is what I thought my hair would look like at 5 years natural and it’s just NOT the case. So now I’ve been doing/trying styles that reflect what I want opposed to just wishing my hair was a certain way.
Thanks so much, Joy! Your transparency is such an inspiration. You’ve never been ashamed of your Afro and celebrate your hair texture. You’ve not compromised or modified your hair texture just to placate someone’s discomfort with what is acceptable. Thank you! Keep Shining! 🙌🏽🏆
Queen your Crown is lovely & thanks for sharing your journey I've been with you since the start. I did my big chop 1 year after. I still have not added heat. out of fear of damage . I wanted to say you Rock.
I big chopped around the same time as you and I feel like we’ve been going through our hair journey together by watching every single one of your videos ❤️❤️
Joy-el, your content is amazing! Your hair is amazing! YOU are AMAZING!!!! I have been watching your videos for about four years and wow! The length and thickness of your hair is enviable! I love how you emphasize the value of consistency with a good foundational routine over products and implements! I also appreciate the fact that you consistently support Black products and businesses! Congratulations on your five years! I look forward to seeing what you do in the next five!!!!! Best regards! --from a fellow 4Cer who didn’t know her hair could do this!!!! ☺️
If you look up "Cut it Kinky Alumni Stylist Directory" you can search up natural hair salons near you! I've personally stopped using oils and butters on my 4c hair but no matter your routine I've found a good stylist through them for a regular trim!
I went 10 years. Had tons of setbacks but I went back to my perm IF MY HAIR REACHED GOALS, maybe I would have stayed natural but my kinda hair, would not thrive. I swear I tried everything in that 10 years tho. I am now on a healthy, relaxed hair journey..deep conditioner is good for relaxed AND natural so ill stick with that
Those... those have got to be the most beautiful braids I've ever seen!!! Totally agree with the simplistic routines! It's not about fancy products, the magic is in the method!
My 5 year natural hair anniversary was last week too 😊 I’ve been following you since the beginning & our hair is the pretty much the same length & texture. We’ve come a long way! I’m looking forward to your new content 💜
I’ve loved watching your natural hair journey! Your hair is gorge and has grown so much. I agree with you about Sulfur 8 lol. My mom used it on my scalp as a child and it’s the truth for itching/flaking. I still use it as an adult. The brand even has a new lighter formula in a blue container that is the same but doesn’t have such a powerful scent as the original one in the yellow container. Great vid!♥️🫶🏾
Congratulations!👏💜 Your hair is lovely it has grown very nicely in these five years. It's great that you remained consistent and had patience. Simplicity with hair care works very well.
Wow, this is really length goals! I’d love for my hair to get to the length that yours looked like when wearing braids and twists. I love how those protective styles look with no added hair. Right now, I feel like I’m struggling a lot to retain length. For the past four months, I have been keeping my hair in medium-size twists, and just wearing scarves and wigs, but I found that I am still not retaining length and it’s soo frustrating.
Make sure you're thoroughly cleansing your hair every time, but be careful not to rub shampoo into the ends! That will dry them out. Baby them with conditioner (deep/rinse-out/leave-in) before, during, and after washing and styling.
@@BionAvastar3000 yes I ensure my scalp is very clean because i get itchy scalp too. I also apply extra product to the ends and try to snip single strand knots everytime I see them.
I have used Sulfur 8, wild growth Oil, Black Caster Oil, and 2 drops of JoJo Oil mixture for 3 years and my have is growing like weeds and it is very healthy. Very little shedding when I take down protective styles and shampoo. I always pre Poo with JoJo oil before hand. This is the system that works for me❤.
Your hair is glorious!! I have been subscribed to your channel since I did my big chop nearly a year ago. To my surprise, my hair has really grown (from nearly 6” to 11” in less than a year). I find that I am using A LOT MORE PRODUCT AND TAKING A LOT MORE TIME than I used to when my hair was shorter. As a result, I am attempting to simplify my wash day routine while still keeping my hair moisturized. Have you found that the extensive length of your hair has played a role in your decision to modify your wash day from weekly to much less often??
@@SharmaineJoyelYES!! Same here…..My arms just can’t take it!! I go thru products each wash day like you wouldn’t believe!! And it takes me 5-6 hrs with all the steps (Prepoo, shampoo, protein treatment, conditioner, deep conditioning masque, aloe vera, leave-in and then styling product….Whew!). Crazy making!! And expensive!!! 🤣 But, I love my natural hair and it’s so good to know that you have scaled down the wash day frequency. Thank you for this video!!!!!
Thank you for this video! I remember when I first followed you a few years back and I fell off from watching videos but it was nice to come back & watch you and see how you're doing hair-wise and life wise
Wow!! Consistency is sooo key😍❤️🔥! Beautiful! I was wondering, if you’ve ever tried a low “slick” ponytail on your stretched hair or a half up, half down hairstyle?
🎉😅Girl, do what works for your pockets! Don’t let these black hair salons rob you Sis!!! I’ll definitely be using that nizoral AD. 💆🏽♀️Already been using the ❤sulfur 8❤. My hair grows like weeds with that grease. 😂
I have similar hair as you: long type 4, high density and a lot of hair too, and I don't know how do you have the patience to deal with it 😅 I recently cut it because i couldn't deal with so much hair + spend 5 hours just washing and blowdrying my hair each week. I've never felt so free in my life lol
Happy 5 years to us 🥂 I big chopped February 2018. I wash my hair every 4-6 weeks because it’s too much lol. I also take a simple approach with my hair. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! So proud of your growth.
I’m going to try the hair soufflé you showed. I like butters for my hair too. And if I owned a hair supply store, I would LOVE for you to come and give my store publicity.
So good to see your face again! Your hair is magnificent. I’m not sure if this is the supply store you found, but I’ve visited a little bitty one called Get Sassy Beauty Supply in Chandler. They seem to be a big supplier of wigs and extensions which I don’t use, but they seem to carry a few black owned hair care lines in there and the staff was definitely very nice. I’ll bet they’d let you film there if you wanted.
Loved this video! Your hair looks awesome! I just purchased the RevAir which is so exciting. Would you be able to make a tutorial of your full RevAir braid out routine? 😊❤
I love your videos and energy ❤ also, Joy-el seems like it would make a great hair product brand name if you ever were to create your own 🙂 keep blooming 😎
The hair is insane! After your wash day, how often throughout the week do you have to remoisturize it and do you repeat the LCO method when you do that? The half up half down updo looks gorgeous on you when you pulled it up! You could do a different video per hairstyle, I've been looking for new ideas on how to just wear my own hair without extensions.
@@quinnalameCurious to hear her answer. One “hack” I used to do is pick the most undefined sections and only braid those (dampen slightly first). So I’d end up with about 4-6 braids. That way, it refreshes the style without having to braid your whole head.
I shaved my hair completely on June 2nd and its already growing I had alot of dandruff I bought a black owned oil and I use hibiscus to wash I don't put anything in my hair and its ten times healthier , I will definitely get a leave in a butter and sulfut8
Thank you for stating that you don't have to put your hair away aka "protective style" to grow your natural hair. A lot of women don't want to hear this or are ready to have this very important conversation. I truly feel "protective styling" as a natural hair "must do" is a scam. I don't think it's a healthy thing to do constantly, but that's my personal opinion. I'm not against braids, I LOVE THEM! But the salon experience is expensive and a headache. If you can DIY - great! But also, let your hair breathe. Show it, work with it, love on it. That's it.
Does your hair stay stretched when you are wearing it out or does it shrink back? I miss the big afro but this is beautiful too ☺️ My hair is not even half your length and washing it was already complicated, until I recently found a good detangling shampoo. So I totally understand why you don't want to spend hours washing weekly with your current length and density!!! Now, after over 10 years of being natural and struggling with wash day, I highly recommend using a detangling shampoo. I live in France and I'm using a shampoo from a French brand called Activilong Actiforce, but I think in the US market Design Essentials and Mielle Organics are good choices for detangling shampoos.
I also wanted to say that I really appreciate the important messages you share on your channel: keeping things specific to your own needs, simple, affordable and easy to maintain on a regular basis 😊
