Reason I love natural hair: no more expensive hair products/treatments, with long lasting damaging results, I can enjoy swimming without worrying if gets wet, I have freedom to exercise and not worrying about sweating out a relaxer. Natural hair is unique and versatile, grows faster and healthier. You control your hair, your hair does not control you. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder, never allow anyone to tell you what is beautiful.

yknight this awakening has really been eye opening and freeing for me! It may be hard to see but it’s true. Real love, real self love doesn’t berate. We’re all entitled to our own opinions and feelings but a lot of what I see is not preference it’s hate! Hate disguised as self love or “confidence”
If you’re picking at anyone or anything I say check your hate. If it’s just something you don’t like ok but if it’s more it’s pointing something back at you. Something inside reflecting a “truth” you see about yourself and you’re not projecting making this world less safe and pleasure able for all 😈

    • @rachybaby72
      @rachybaby72 4 года назад +26

I don't know if this falls into the category of 'easy for me to say', but if you _really_ like your hair, who cares what people think about it.
I've had people in my life say that my hair would _really_ look great if I did a braid/twist/bantu knot out, all the Outs. My brother even said to me recently, after I took my twists out for good _(I had twists for a few years to hide/grow out damage...though, I retwisted every 1.5 - 2 months),_ that "Once you get your hair done..." -- I told him it was 'done' and kept it moving, while he looked embarrassed... I don't know what my brother saw on my head that made him think my hair wasn't ready for prime time, but I do know that the people who want me to rock an 'Out' style prefer manipulated curls to the real thing. I could care less, all I have to please is me and I love my curly fro. After deep conditioning, leave-in conditioners are all I put in my hair.
*Side Note:* It's a funny exchange when people say my hair would look good if I did X. I just repeat with a smile on my face _'No, I like the way it is'._ Some think I just don't understand what they're "really" getting at, as if manipulated styles are the prized possession, so they repeat it...after I repeat myself a few times they start to get the point. 😊

I relate to this so much! When I first when natural ( in 5th grade), I was made fun of for my TWA. I was told I looked like a man and my favorite teacher told me he liked my hair better when it was permed. It was painful, it made me feel very insecure. Getting to love my 4c natural hair was a journey and I can now confidently say that I love my afro and I'm NEVER going back to perms ❤❤

I don't like a sad Joy-el. And so I'm gonna work on a list of reasons why I am obsesesed with this channel, to be included in this comment.
    1: Type 4 hair is f*cking beautiful.
2: Joy-el inspires me with my weak @$$ type 2/3 hair and those w/ type 4.
3: She should never feel sad about her looks. Joy-el is serving us all modelling looks 24/7.
4: An inspiration to biracial/mixed race people with type 4 hair
5: Type 4 is indeed versatile and can go through a LOT.
I'm sure I'll have more. But again: JOY-EL IS QUEEN.
6: She films everything she does w/ her hair for her viewers.
7: Proudly showcases black owned businesses and promotes them in her videos.
8: Is a prime example of biracial women not all looking like Zendaya or the same as each other.
9: If I had type 4a-4c hair, Joy-el would teach how to make me feel like a king because she's that confidence inspiring.
Ok I'm done for now. Joy-el we love your channel! :D

I cut off my relaxed hair about 3 weeks ago and for the first week, it was hard because I spent so much time trying to make my type 4 hair look like type 3. I thought that’s what I was suppose to do to be accepted as a natural because You rarely see type 4 girls rocking their Afros online and in public. Also I would spend hours finger coiling my hair just to realize that it wasn’t worth it. I recently ran across your videos and since then, I’ve been wearing my Afro out. You have inspired me so much, so thank you! It’s not easy rocking your fro in public but I hope (like what you did for me and thousands of others) I can inspire at least one little girl with hair like ours, to wear it out and know that it’s beautiful.

Your are stunningly beautiful. I can't believe you ever questioned that. I did the big chop a month ago. I've been growing it out for 10 months under box braids. The first time I saw my true raw natural self I stared and cried for a couple of hours. At the age of 44 I finally got to see who I really am and I love it. I wish a relaxer had never touched my roots. My hair isn't easy to manage, but I'm enjoying learning and nurturing my crown. I can't wait to see where it will be in another 10 months.

I am SO PROUD of you! Your parents did an amazing job. I know it’s your life and I realize it’s your journey, but sharing it with us is so clear to me that your parents allowed you to be you and discouraged how the world would try to define you. Look at how awesome you are and how healthy your acceptance of yourself is! When I was about seven I always wished I could wear my curly hair out but was tricked into believing that I shouldn’t, so I didn’t. Until I moved to Germany where it rained everyday and then I turned 30. That’s when I stopped blow drying my hair and never looked back. I have never chemically altered my hair texture, I never dyed it either. Guess what? I’m going gray now AND I’m allowing my hair to grow long. I’m going to rock my long, curly, gray hair because I have embraced all of who I am. Thanks to you there are more beautiful, brown people with all curl patterns accepting themselves and discovering just how amazing they are. It is empowering and freeing. Thanks for your videos, you are a treasure.

I love how much you love your afro! I'm over the obsession with koil/curl definition. I'd like everyone to truly embrace their natural hair.
Growing my hair was long and natural, so I've always had love for my hair. I tried out a relaxer for a few years in college but afterwards went back natural.

almost choked on icecream on the ducks with ant butts comment! but yes I love my 4c natural hai! it does whatever it wants! I find the texture very interesting! ALSO, this is very random! but sometimes I love to pretend I have locs when I'm wearing my old twists! I feel super cool when my twists get frizzy making the twists appear fuller and loc like! not many embrace the look of old twists. maybe in the far future, I'll get locs! but for now, I like the versatility to mimic different looks.

I have curly hair but I have always found type 4 hair truly the most versatile and beautiful hair! When I saw my friends braid their hair, wear it in twists, low puffs, etc. I was in awe at how much they can do and my curls would just be frizzy lol. In the 70s my dad rocked an Afro and he always said one day it will come back and I'm happy to see the natural hair movement/ afros return.

I have it in twists because I just finished doing it. Thank you for being you 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

"It symbolizes freedom", yesss I have a type 3 hair I guess, some parts are curly and some parts are wavy. I chopped all my hair off in my March exactly, and I felt free of all the oppression I was put on by society to hold the sweet straight-haired pretty face every one wanted me to be, now that I look in the mirror my hair doesn't look ashy, it grew out to have a black with a slight of brown color in it and I NEVER KNEW that my hair had that color, it was new to me, because it was grey before I chopped it off, I never want to straighten my hair again, it was agony, I used to stay hours every week burning my hair and making my hands red with all the heat. I couldn't swim, I couldn't have fun, I was always worrying that if ppl saw the "real" me would freak out, but now that it's growing back I am embracing it, it feels good to disappoint everyone and make yourself happy.

Years ago, I had a deep conversation with my hair about accepting and loving her just the way she is. This conversation was successful, and now we are united. Our hair textures are identical, and we must handle it with care and tenderness. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous ♥️.

Your Afro is beautiful at all its lengths. It takes me back to my high school and college in the 70's. When things get back to 'normal' you should come to the hair shows in Atlanta and NYC. You'll see plenty of ladies and gents sporting their natural hair and Fros...❤❤
I have worn my hair in many ways over the years. I have been wearing my hair natural over 15+ years and don't have any plans to put the creamy cracked in my hair ever again. 😅

We are on the opposite end of the hair spectrum so we are able to do pretty much every style imaginable. Our twists and braidouts look bomb. We can straighten our hair. We can curl it. We can do all kinds of styles with it. We can even do nothing to it and nobody would be able to tell 😂. I can’t tell you the number of times I have pulled my hair into a bun without combing it and no one could tell. No other hair type can rock Afros like us unless they do special stuff to their hair. All we have to do is wake up and go. I am so envious of people who lived in the 70s because that was when our hair type was “in” and people wore it proudly. It would be so nice to go back to that but I guess in a way we have with the natural hair movement. Only this time everyone is chasing the perfect curl.

Let me say that I love your fro. It frames your face beautifully and enhances your features. That is my favorite hairstyle of all your hairstyles. It is thick, lush and beautiful. I admit that at times I feel envious because my hair is low to medium density 4A/3C which does not stay up so my attempts at an afro is a big fail since I passed my twa phase. I love my Type 4 afro hair though and I wear it out 100% of the time since I big-chopped one year and three months ago. You are one of the influencers who inspired me to embark on my natural hair journey. I watched your growth since your big chop and I have enjoyed your journey and mine. Love you Sharmaine and much blessings as you continue to grow.

DUCKS WITH ANT BUTTS😂😂🤣😹 I need a drawing of the two together 🤣😹😂 I love this video, the message, your growth and positive reinforcement. The woman that I know that have bald, brush waves to twa’s exude the most femininity in their being instead of hair being the feminine “tool”. The times I have blown out my hair heads turn so it definitely is a statement, then can rock it curly the next day playing on the versatility. I love our hair and I too, see Mother Nature as a black woman.

Afros are beautiful and no matter what anyone says people with curls should embrace them and not be so obsessed with hair straighteners
Hair straighteners just lead to heat damage in my opinion

You understand the pain that have being laid on women with afro hair, but you come out on the other side wearing it with comfort and confidence, and writing your own narrative of beauty while setting examples.
