I love your videos! It was really useful to try and pin down my style to three words and came up with: classic, comfortable, quality. I'm 80 next birthday but still love clothes and aim to look my best - much helped by your penetrating eye! I choose simple (classic) , well-made (quality) pieces that fit perfectly (comfort). You don't get tired of good stuff like you do of trash - some of my pieces are 30 + years old. I also like to add one stand out item to avoid looking boring - a beautiful scarf, a dramatic piece of jewellery, a lovely bag or pair of shoes.

@@jacquelinea8224 I love Jean Muir - her business closed years ago after her death but her style was timeless; Jaeger - very well-made clothes; Max Mara - beautiful fabrics; TSE cashmere for ultra luxe sweaters. But you can find quality in lesser known brands too - and in thrift shops! There's an excellent book by Christa Weil called 'Second hand Chic' which tells you everything about quality and finish in good clothes. You can get a (second hand!) copy on abe books for a few pounds (or dollars).

@@jacquelinea8224 thanks for asking Jacqueline. I was a big fan of neutrals ie navy, stone and grey with accents of plum, burgundy and green. I would accessorise with pops of colour in handbags. I decided to turn this around and make the colour my basics and the neutrals the accessory and I decided to try new colours like orange and to step outside my comfort prints of stripes and try eg an asymmetrical floral print. I work with children and young families so my clothes are comfortable and I wear flat shoes. I go for a youthful but not clownish appearance and I want to maintain a casual elegance. I'm in my 60's, looking to refreshing my wardrobe at this time. The advice on this vlog post is very much on point, especially for younger women. When you're starting to build a look, remember to add pieces over time. A signature style will change but it should never be extreme, as classic's are always in fashion, trend will return but never in the same way it was previously presented.

Thank you for sharing this note Elfriede. In Alyssa’s ‘3 Words’ videos she talked about dressing for your favourite part of the day. For me, that’s as simple as treating myself to warm, buttery banana bread & a coffee at home. In terms of "getting ready" for this time, I think about doing things like wearing my favourite, comfy loungewear (it’s really cold in Melbourne) and/or wearing my favourite lip oil that makes me feel lovely. Mine just happens to be Clarins. You don’t have to be retired. You don’t have to be going anywhere. You can still do simple, beautiful things with your day. All the best to you.

"Having your own sense of style" is a sentence I like. As the matter of fact, Ted Kennedy said at the eulogy for Jackie Kennedy: " no one, that we knew of, had a better sense of style than her". Now, I will never be like a Jackie Kennedy, even if tried ( never did) The closest I came is that as a little child I thought Jackie looks like my mom (not the other way around). I am a person always a little on the search of my style and that way, through the years, adapted just this style. Knowing I like a easy system, a little classic and comfortable.

I am somebody who adores clothes and the art of putting pieces together. It's so fun for me! I know my style, and yet I struggle to put words to it. I hear so many people use words like "chic", "classic", "minimal" etc. and honestly, I don't know the difference. If I were to describe my style without set terms, I would say that I love earth toned colors. I very much lean towards white, creams and different shades of brown, but also wear black often. I don't always add color to my wardrobe, but when I do, it's a settle or muted/earthy yellow, blue, green, red. My top two favorite materials to purchase my clothing in are 100% cotton and linen! I do have a few structured and/or fitted pieces that I enjoy and get good wear from, but I always like to have some sort of flow in the outfit, whether it's the whole outfit or just one element of it! I don't always wear jewelry, but maybe 2-3 times a week will pair a gold set of studs or mini hoop earings or a simple gold necklace with my outfits!

Every time I watch one of these videos, I want to purge my closet and only keep a capsule of things that are classic, polished, and carefree. But then I look at how I actually shop and dress and I’d say it’s more contemporary, casual, undone. Plus I predominantly shop vintage so my wardrobe is just full of “pieces.” So it’s a constant battle of what I think I want vs. What I actually do.

  • @nancer63

Thank you for this, Alyssa. When you suggested starting small and shared some specific ideas of what small steps might look like, I realized I already have a few signature elements. The same perfume for over 35 years, because when you get so many compliments on it in your 20s and then across the years, you keep wearing it. And the same rings on my finger that mean something to me, but are also simple and classic. All that to say, I am finding it helpful to name those small things and know I’ve already been defining my signature style. Now I can keep going. My current pursuit is growing out my gray and finding the wash and wear, super easy but super stylish haircut that I’m going to wear for the rest of my life. 😘

The Three Words guide is fantastic!! I used it recently when looking for a top. It helped me narrow down to 1 easy win! I just LOVE this top and my daughter lit up when she saw my choice. It's my version of a button down. I've tried the white button down and it just doesn't work for me, too crisp. So I found an 'artsy' one that is perfect, with 3/4 length sleeves! I'll have you know I tried on a LOT that day and things just didn't look right plus I was on my own. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then I reminded myself to think of my three words and bingo! Thank you for keeping things simple. It makes it easier when styling or getting to shop occasionally. I am 60 and I've decided I have a 'shape shifter' for a body, so finding my style has been challenging. I have figured out A line dresses and tunics with leggings works great for me. Now that my hair is totally gray I find bold colors & prints work best as well. Interestingly when I found my button down and walked it around the store to see how it felt, another customer remarked how good it looked. Confirmed how I felt. Thanks!

So I’ve been trialing my three words (sensual gravitas eclectic) BUT have had to tweak them based on my daily outfit formulas to actually reflect what I actually am drawn to. Now I’m playing with flowy (comfortable/sensual), elegant (gravitas) and…..? I’m thinking a nod to vintage rather than eclectic might be more accurate and fitting. It’s interesting how terms overlap yet do carry different connotations (your example of relaxed vs undone). Appreciate the welcoming words for those of us (back to ) grappling with style (post pandemic and major life and body changes). Love your philosophy on style, Alyssa. Most of my clothes are over 20 yrs old and many are older than that!! I gladly wear my dear belated mom's (great quality) blazers, sweaters, etc. I've only recently updated a few items, mostly shoes,/boots and have been gifted some great hand me downs. I have found your advice so helpful on how to style items to make them look more current and I seem to always get compliments on my clothes. People don't realize how old they are! Good classic items are hard to wear out and if you take care of your clothes, they seem to last forever. Just update them with a few 'styling tweeks' and voila! Sustainability at it's best. Thank you for all your videos! Bless you!

Thank you for another video! I've binged these for the past year and they're always delightful and insightful! I've tried the three-word-method before, but it never seemed to fit until you talked about the words as something to describe myself, not just my style. I've always thought my style is comfy, flowy and classic, but something seemed to be missing, because I like to mix things up quite often. Besides, the words can be conflicting too, as you said. So in the end I've settled on unpredictable, smart and comfy as my three words and I think I'm a step closer to my personal style. Thank you for helping me realise this!
Another thing, I really love your "make new out of old"-series, it really encourages me to look at my wardrobe in new ways. Thank you!

Excellent, excellent advice as usual🥰 Your "uniform different occassions" point really blew my mind, because it is SO true for me! I love dark colours and over the last few years I've been adding more colour to my wardrobe - red and pink, light blue instead of navy, etc. After giving it a lot of thought, my three words are: comfortable, disco, classic. I don't know how else to describe my vibe other than 70s, but there you go.
As a short, busty woman with child-bearing hips, it's always been a nightmare to shop, but I'm embracing my body type and have found that wrap dresses and boots are definitely a huge part of my signature style. Also, you'll pry my high-waisted skinny jeans out of my cold, dead hands, LOL!

What a friend and mentor you have become to me!! I now see the value in what I already have and by just styling them differently I can get so many new looks! I have discovered that I have a classic style that I like to add a surprise element (like red shoes) and structured pieces. So classic, bold, and polished!

Thank you for your style advice and videos. The words that I chose to describe my style don’t match my actual purchases. I like relaxed, refined and classic clothes. But sometimes I choose a floral dress or shirt with puffy sleeves. I love both types of purchases but I struggle with incorporating the contrasting styles.

I wonder if I’ve compartmentalized multiple signature styles for much of my life: things I wore to work were dictated by dress codes and other people’s standards, versus things worn in my downtime when I can experiment more, highlight other aspects of myself that get less focus during the work week.

I feel like you have a very healthy work/life balance and that you seem to prioritise certain things like taking a trip to italy each summer, etc. Could you do a video on how you manage all of this? It seems as though you have a really good 'rich life' if you know that term? How did you get to this place? It's very inspiring! P.S: and love this structured shirt/jeans style uniform in this video

Solids are my comfort zone as I feel messy in prints. The little things make the outfit…..rolling up sleeves or tucking the front of the blouse and keeping the back loose. I’ve always been a slow fashion kind of girl, buying quality pieces in natural fibers that breathe. Love the videos and love Sibenik as your backdrop - the Croatian coast line is magical.

If I'm in a hurry, or I just want to feel good in something without giving it much thought, I reach for black and white in my closet. Sometimes the white is on top; sometimes on the bottom, especially in summer when I love to wear white pants, but black and white is my "go-to."

I am transitioning from business casual to very casual. Ready want to find my signature look. I’m glad sneakers are on trend because I can wear them again. I’m also hoping to bring leggings back to my wardrobe an I have a faux leather pair now need to add a winter and spring pair. I am also looking to add color back to my wardrobe. I am bored with Black, white, blue, beige light pink. It does nothing for my complexion.
    My three words,
    Classic, colorful, comfortable.
Classic style: button downs, blouses straight/skinny jeans, cigarette pants, dresses, blazers, and flats/heels/wedges. My signature jeweler: studs, anniversary band, heart diamond necklace. I have hoops but with wearing a mask I haven’t wore them in a long time.
Comfortable: leggings, knit joggers, sweaters and cotton short/long sleeve shirts, sandals and sneakers.
    Colorful: NEED to FILL.
My most important staple piece are my glasses. Cat eye style bold frame.
    I love your classic style.

Wow that was a great great video! Love it and will rewatch several times. I'm currently in the process of finding my own style and what suits me. It's not as easy as I thought it would be especially I lack patience but it is so much fun and I'm "working" on it every day.
My three words are "Sensual + simple + effortless", still figuring out my personal uniform but in summer definitely jumpsuits and my "start small" signature pieces are my straightened beach blonde hair and my three small, golden hoops on each ear. I didn't recognise these where already pieces of my signature style till you mentioned it. So happy that I'm further in my style journey than I thought I would be!

I loved this video and your channel AND reading all the comments (fabulous to see the age range of your viewers) I am going thru a style change along with a life change having recently found the love of my life in my late 50’s. Turns out I have an hourglass figure that I have always tried to put into long lean outfits. My husband loves when I dress in more form fitting clothes and I finally have embraced my figure as well. I am also an ARTIST. After watching this and reading through the comments (super helpful to borrow others words that seem to resonate) My words are “sensual, timeless and undone” ❤️ It is so wonderful to have put this all together because it is exactly how my art looks as well. Magic!

Hi Alyssa - I love your videos! I had been struggling with evolving my personal style and feeling like myself since moving to a new climate, and your recommendation of focusing on three words has helped me shop my own closet and feel like me again. My three words/categories are timelessly feminine, ethereal/otherworldly, and effortless. If an outfit feels too fussy, I feel uncomfortable and not like me. Swapping out my stilettos for flats and changing out my structured jackets for flowing fits have been a game changer for me. Thank you so much for all of your practical advice!

I’m 64 on Thursday, have lost 25 kg’s in the last year and I’m finding it hard to find “my look”. Buying new clothes that are the right size for me now is a challenge! I love the way you dress and one of the things I love is a good quality blouse, but the white shirt is a huge problem for me. If the material is too stiff, I feel uncomfortable, or it ends up pulling back. Maybe I just need to keep looking for the perfect one!

Thank you for this. Lots to consider. I have come yo the conclusion that my three words are classic, minimalist and ethnic. In that, I always seem to enjoy a little ethnic something, be it a scarf ot earrings, occasionally a skirt or top, nothing too overpowering though. Still assessing my colours though, which are definitely evolving towards more subtle tones. It feels good to have a focus. A life long journey though, I suspect.

This was such an insightful video; it's really got me thinking about the styles I gravitate towards and how I want to present myself to the world. I only have a small portion of time in the week to style myself, I work in the Operating Room and as such, wear my work uniform of surgical blues, and scrub cap (we also can't wear any jewelry or nail polish).
I HAVE noticed my signature though, and that is bold, colourful, sparkly, eye makeup. I have hundreds of eyeshadows and don't go any where without a full look, and I never wear neutrals on my eyes! Ironically, I own only clear lip balm.
I can't be certain of my 3 words yet, but "bold and edgy, and playful" come to mind. I love pairing contrasts; like platform Doc Marten boots with a short dramatic puff dress! Or a long sparkly pleated skirt with neon pink loafers. I love to play with my look, so I'm sure that as my personal style evolves, so will my words :)
Thank you for the lovely video! Definite food for thought!
