    Since this video keeps getting caught in the algorithm, I feel like at long last I have to make some things clear:
    This is the very first thing I've ever created, so while I'm proud of what it is, the production quality is kinda garbage. If that's something that put you off, feel free to check out the other history videos I made, because they're much more refined.
    Also as a lot of you rightfully pointed out some things stated in this video are not correct, such as:
    -There being two Emperors of Austria-Hungary, which is wrong: The Emperor of Austria also held the title "King of Hungary", so that's one person.
    -Austria apprearing first in 1156. While that is true for the Douchy of Austria, the name that closely resembles "Austria"/"Österreich" was mentioned as early as 996.
    -Napoleon being short, which he wasn't. I'm not apologizing, I just find it hilarious that people are getting triggered by that, so I'll stick to that joke, nerds.
    So why am I writing this instead of redoing the video?
    Because I think I would have to redo the entire thing to be happy with it, and I don't think that's neccesary, since most of this video still holds up contentwise.
    Also, as I mentioned, this is in fact the very first video I ever produced and I am proud for what it is. It's the reason why I still make videos every now and then. Watching it reminds me of how far I have come in terms of production quality and that I can always improve and become better at what I do. Also, I can't let it sit down that my worst video is also my most viewed one and I will not rest until I put out something that'll overtake this video some day.
    Until then, thanks for reading this, and have a nice day! :)

  • @andraslibal
    @andraslibal 6 лет назад +67

    You forgot to mention how Austria almost lost Hungary in 1848 except for the help of the Russian Tsar, and you also forgot the most fateful year when Austria really screwed up: 1853, when it broke its alliance with Russia and remained alone - to be kicked by the Italians in 1861 and then by Prussia in 1866 - which is why the Hungarians could get cocky because Austria badly needed at least one ally. And then WW1 - no country was so viciously destroyed as Austria-Hungary. Not even Germany. Ok, they tried with Turkey they almost took away all of the seashore but Ataturk said come and take it and after 3 more years everybody got really tired of fighting ... The loss of Austria as a major power and unifying force is really sad because all nations of Eastern Europe lost about 100-150 years of development and culture with this loss. Well, maybe more. It's an ongoing loss. Yes you are reading this on a device built on FET transistors invented in Austria powered by electricity that was used for the first time to provide light to a city in Europe ... also in Austria.

    • @MultiGamerg
      @MultiGamerg 7 лет назад +57

      At times, however by default we had both an emperor and a king, and we hungarians kinda got upset whenever we didn't have a king so we casualy occupied a third of the imperial army and made austria really not want to go to any wars due to fear of yet another rebellion. (Fun fact in the 1848 rebelion we basicaly trashed their army, and the russians had to save their arse.)

    As of right now, I'm working on new videos but I want to take my time with it. I'm not quite content with the overall quality of this one and I know that I can do better. However, due to my proper work this is going to be a side project and painting all those frames, as simplistic as they are, takes a fuckton of work and patience.

This is the actual reason why we have "eternal neutrality" in our constitution, although this is celebrated as a big achievement by our politicians.

  • @luitpoldwalterstorffer2446

    To say that Hitler was German and Beethoven Austrian is not even that wrong.
    Hitler was born just 2km away from the german border, moved to Germany before WW1, when he was a young man and he even gave back Austrian citizenship. (He hated Austria anyways!)
    Beethoven moved to Austria when he was a teenager and "Germany" as a state did not even exist back then!
    People love to point out that Mozart was born in the Archbishopric of Salzburg being independent back then and not in Austria. So why would Beethoven be a German then? He was born in the Electorate of Cologne being independent back then as well!

    • @Siegbert85
      @Siegbert85 6 лет назад

      In Beethoven's time "Germany" was virtually identical to the Holy Roman Empire. It's been called that in official documents almost exclusively by that time. So, technically every subject to the Holy Roman Emperor would have been German in a political sense (which didn't exist at the time.. that's true for the empire at large and the constituting fiefdoms as well. There was no citizenship of Austria either)
      German was an ethnicity. When you were born into a German-speaking culture and German was your mothertongue, you were German. That's still basically true for German speaking minorities in Eastern Europe today who traditionally called themselves German.
      About Hitler: well, he was Austrian by nationality. The fact that he chose to dump that later on doesn't change that. He needed to aquire German citizenship in order to run for office later on.
      Apart from that, I have no problem saying that he was ethnically German as most Austrians had understood themselves back in his time. It was only after 1945 that they started to reject such a notion.

    • @luitpoldwalterstorffer2446
      @luitpoldwalterstorffer2446 6 лет назад +1

      Well, I don´t think the people in Northern Italy could be called "Germans" in any time. And Czechs in Bohemia and Moravia neither. So living under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor cannot be a valid argument for being called "German", I think.
      You say it right: Citizenship did not exist back then! And in the medieval times even languages did not have the same meaning as today. The ruling class did not mind the language of their subjects and it was not an issue at all.
      The idea of nation is very young and so is the idea to identify as "German" or whatever. People began to identify as Germans because it was the language they spoke and. But in few cases it was also seen as being part of a nation as a political and cultural construct. German nationalists have always been a small minority in Austria. And it is impossible to name a certain event being the birth of an Austrian nation. Austria has been named as a different entity than "inbetween Italy and Germany" 200 years ago in a famous theater play.
      Most Austrians rejected the notion to be Germans before 1945 also - in the western parts not as much as in the east.
      Many Austrians have been kind of pissed off after being pushed out in 1866. "If we cannot be the capital of all germans, so we gonna do our thing on our own and screw you!" but this has been a slow process of course.
      Hitler did not identify as Austrian. He identified as German in a political way when a political Germany already existed which was not the case in Mozart´s days where you could only refer to being German because of your language but not in a political way. German nationalist´s fantasies arrived way later...
      I don´t think Hitler can be considered as Austrian he decided to identify as German for himself.

    • @Siegbert85
      @Siegbert85 6 лет назад +1

      "Well, I don´t think the people in Northern Italy could be called "Germans" in any time. And Czechs in Bohemia and Moravia neither. So living under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor cannot be a valid argument for being called "German", I think. "
      Sure, I said the "political sense" of being German didn't exist at the time if we're talking citizenship. However, the HRE was called Germany by contemporaries and Italy wasn't counted as being part of it in the late 18th century.
      You can make a case for Bohemia arguably being part of a wider notion of Germany since it had stronger political ties to the empire, the Habsburgs ruled there and bigger cities were often majority German speaking anyway.
      After the war with Napoleon there was no discussion whether it would be part of the German Confederation whose goal it was to reinstall a German empire again.
      "You say it right: Citizenship did not exist back then! And in the medieval times even languages did not have the same meaning as today. The ruling class did not mind the language of their subjects and it was not an issue at all."
      It was to an extent. Some medieval chroniclers and singers took pride into the idea that it was the Germans who held the power to the Roman Empire and argumented why this was the case, like the Annolied from the 11th century that argumented that it was the Germans who helped Julius Cesar seize power and establish the empire making them the next in line to rule.
      The Sachsenspiegel for instanced argumented that since the king of Bohemia was not a German he should have no say in who is to become the next king in Germany and future emperor.
      A similar argumentation was used prior to the election of Charles V who mainly ruled from Spain. The princes didn't want to be governed by a foreign power and thus made him swear to only install Germans for higher imperial offices.
      He also needed to prove that he was able to speak German.
      "The idea of nation is very young and so is the idea to identify as "German" or whatever."
      Depends. If you want to talk about the citizen's nation that's a concept birthed by the French Revolution basically whereas before you had monarchs and subjects.
      The idea of an ethnic nation defined by cultural and political markers existed for quite a while. In Germany, at least since the late middle ages. The likes of Martin Luther or Ulrich von Hutten argumented in a nationalistic fashion to make political points.
      "Hitler did not identify as Austrian. He identified as German in a political way when a political Germany already existed"
      He thought that all Austrians were ethnic Germans and wanted both countries to join, if that's what you mean. I don't know how you can identify yourself in a different nationality than your own. It's a status granted by the state not something you can make up for yourself.
      "which was not the case in Mozart´s days where you could only refer to being German because of your language but not in a political way."
      Mozart used to write letters to his sister declaring Germany to be his "beloved fatherland which he was proud of". Make of that what you will.

    When Dollfuß was murdered by the nsdap one guy from my village was his guardian, but he was also a nazi and let the murderers pas so they could kill dollfuß.
    the guy from my village was sentenced to death.
    he was supposed to be hung at 7 am, so the guy was in his cell waiting for his death.
    but at 5 am nazis came in and freed him because austia was now part of the german reich.
    years later my grandpa bougt a gun from his widow and apperently that was the gun he carried when he was supposed to protect dollfuß,
    me grandfather used it for hunting.
    so...yeah i apparently have a old nazi relic in my gun save.(I am not proud about it)

    I'm from Austria and I'm really into history and especially european history. I really enjoyed this video! I laughed many times during it, starting at the "Austria. 'What's that?' Well, glad you asked!"
    I mean you could have mixed more about mistaking us for Australia or even blaming us for WWII into it but in all honesty as an austrian history-nerd myself I confirm all the content applies to the facts :D Keep up the awesome work! :D

    That’s a halfway decent summary of our history. You did point out some of your mistakes already, but I have to comment on some other things that I’m only familiar with because I study law. Austria went through a multitude of different constitutions, some quite liberal, bordering on democratic, some very authoritarian. The first was implemented in 1848 if I remember that correctly. We had some great minds who worked on our first republic too, not just the Germans...
    It’s been a few years, so if someone knows differently, please correct me. :)
    Also, Austria is important on the international stage when it comes to treaties and international organisations. Many have are created and have their seat in Vienna. Austria also acts as a buffer Zone between western and Eastern Europe.

    As I long time reader of Austrian history and culture, I enjoyed this video. The ending, however, slights Austria and ignores its contribution to Western culture and the arts.
