Road to Germany #01 - The Holy Roman Empire

- The start to a series that explores how a nation gets created. In this episode: migration of germanic tribes, foundation of the HRE, as well as a brief explanation of feudalism.
Obviously, I had to simplify a few details here and there, so here are a couple of things I couldn't point out else the video would have become quite a drag:
- the imperial succession law was not a concept invented by Otto I. like one might take from this video and rather something that had established itself amongst eastern frankian nobles in the years prior.
- the ones deciding over who became emperor in the early days of the HRE weren't clearly defined. Usually that would depend on wealth and power. The Prince Electors seen in this video gained their position somewhere between 1200 and 1300 after a war between two big noble families had left the electorial landscape devastated.
- yes, I am well aware that liberalism is not a german invention, but since France and the UK also had feudal structures in place, that point still stands
- as pointed out by some of you by now, the Netherlands never got fully conquered by Rome. I messed up that part of the map, I'm sorry.
Music used in the intro/outro:
The Premier - United States Marine Band and Arthur S.Witcomb
Music piece is taken from the RUclips Audio Library and is free to use.

HRE is just the zone with Germans
*One Does NOT Simply Mess With The Empire*
> Napoleon dismantles it anyway.
Good meme
But tbh... Napoleon was quite an outlier. Too fucking good at warfare.
And the HRE was already non-existent at this point in History, so most states were kinda meh about it.
What a great Christmas surprise!
Your back teaching history.
I feel your pain. Tourists sometimes are very... annoying. The other day an american asked me where he could find the Kölner Dom. Problem is, he was in Dresden. So I told him how to get to Köln and that he needs to figure things out from there. Btw, on point explanation of the feudal system. Dont know why schoolteachers need hours upon hours for it.
I believe they thought that teaching the basic concept of giving land to people in exchange of food / money is to complex for children
If only if taught they taught more history in Canadian schools. They start in early 16th century onward.

btw at 8:29 the Hungarian half of Austria-Hungary is saying (something along the lines of): "let God fuck the sky onto you".

I just love the slideshow at the end with everybody’s reaction to Germany forming.
Great video! I'm looking forward to the episode featuring Bismarck and the German unification, one of the most interesting events of the 19th century. It never ceases to sound odd to me that Germany is 'younger' than Canada as a country.
Only in its modern form. Many countries we take for granted were actually just formed within the last 100-200 years. Doesn't mean there wasn't a precursor to it.
@@Siegbert85 That's what I meant. A Germany as state entity is younger than Canada. Before 'Germany' it was a loose league of 39 sovereign states.
@@HoH Depends on the time. Germany used to be a comparatively well working feudal kingdom during the high middle ages. The "loose league" description would be fitting during the early modern period, especially after 1648.
@@Siegbert85 We're talking 1815-1866 (the precursor of the unified German state).
@@HoH Sure, there was no German state during that time.
However contemporaries were viewing the founding of a German nation-state as a re-establishment of the "German Empire", if only in rhetoric.
William I of Prussia was quoted that he would be the one to finally wear the crown of Germany again which had rested for 60 years.
And then he never posted again
I guess there was no need for the road to germany #02
And the holy roman empire lived happily ever after as a stable nation that kept europe together the end.
Germany? Nah never happened. It was always roman.
Its fun to see what my studies has done to me. By the definition of Roberts, a state is a supreme authority, with the power to execute said authority, that is recognised both internally and externally and rules over a defined territory.
Point is: whenever someone says "state" to anything pre-1800 usually my brain automatically jumps to alarm mode. I have been traumatised. Thanks uni.

0:38 There was actually a Germany. The first real Holy Roman Emperor(Otto I) was the King of Germany before formation of the empire. Also all of the Holy Roman Emperors are Kings of Germany.
4:21 He was not the King of East Francia.
4:46 We don't know who elected the emperors before 1356. This electors was from the Golden Bull of 1356.

At this rate it'd take 3 years... 4 max.
This is honestly the most concise summary of the HRE that I have ever seen
You’re so underrated. 10000% better than the extra credits
explain?
@@maxmcdonald7798 Another channel named Extra Credits also does this kind of stuff, but Guy Bloke does it better.
@@friedrichkarle9757 I want to know why he is better and not "he does it better than them"
Max Mcdonald because the extra credits try to dumb it down to the point that a child could understand and then they shoehorn comedy into their videos and 99% of the time it fails to be funny
But Extra Credits is meant for a younger audience, theyre trying to appeal to those folks.
Finally, I've been waiting forever for you to upload another video! I'm glad I waited
So...the HRE was basically a federal republic like germany with a not-democratic ellectoral college like the USA?
Karl Der Nervige yes the HRE was originally a unitary state but became a federation in time. However the only voting was done by nobles.
A federal monarchy if you will
A federal monarchy is probably more accurate, and over time, the Imperial States grew more and more autonomous. And after the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which declared the Imperial States sovereign, the Empire was pretty much defunct.
@@TheLocalLt It was never unitary. Even in the 10th century the dukes of the stem duchies had more direct control over their territories than the king had over any of them. The kings had direct control over royal domains and the church, hence the Ottonians were so keen on expanding bishoprics all over the empire.
But unlike in France of the same time, the dukes actually respected the authority of the king.
MacX85 it’s not about control it’s about sovereignty. Remember that the stem duchies recognized their leader as “King of Germany” before they changed it to “Holy Roman Emperor”. The emperor/King was always spiritually above the nobles and always had to be recognized as such. Even by the 1700s, the only HRE domains that I would consider *not* being under Austrian control were HRE domains under control of other powers (Prussia for Brandenburg, England for Hanover, etc)
An upload the day before Christmas? A miracle, I tell you!

Ay mate, when is the next part of this heresy comming?
That "And Jesus" is comedy gold.
Worth waiting a while for the next part.
So..... the holy roman empire is Basically the imperium of man?
No, it's the last empire of god. Up to the investitur chenanigans the emperor was above the pope and considered the leader of christianity (well, at least in the west). In fact the church dogma said that the hre was gods last empire on earth (hence "holy") and its end would mark the beginning of the apocalypse. So it was in a way the christian equivalent of the muslim caliphate.
