The GDP of Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, and the Czech Republic combined are already $7.2T (2018 IMF estimates for nominal GDP). Add to this the majority of Italy's $2.2T GDP (the South is really poor and unproductive compared to the north), portions of France's $2.9T and Poland's $0.6T, and all of Luxembourg and Slovenia and you will get to RLL's $9.2T. The Roman Empire at its height would include all of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Lybia, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, England and Wales, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, parts of Western Germany, and all of the Balkan states. No. And never say that to an Austrian :) Even worse, never make the same argument about the German speaking Swiss :) I'd even be careful around some Bavarians (many consider themselves Bavarian first, German second...or just citizens of Germany but not Germans).
Even more important: franks: dont call them bavarians, because they see themself frankish first, bavarian second and german last. Same counts for any freestate (saxons and thuringians too). :)
You are right alexandru the Comments are stupid, Austria is a German state the same Way prussia was and the Current 16 States in the german federal republic are. It buffles me how few people realize that germany isnt germany its the german federal republic a countrie Made up by german States. Austria is German, they just arent Part of the countrie formed by the prussians and its later succesor countries. But Austria is a German state the same way bavaria brandenburg Sachsen etc thats just a fact
@ TheCerbari: That's like saying that Belgians (Wallonians) are French. Austrians are (mostly) Germanic but they are not Germans just as Wallonians are not French. In a sense Germany is a federation of different Germanic nations, which does not include all of them. If understood in that way then Austrians are "Germans", where "German" becomes synonymous to "Germanic" in the same sense that "Slavic" or "Baltic" are used. Incidentally, these terms are not binary either. Russia is in many ways a lot more Slavic than the Czech republic and Austria is less German than Germany as both Austrians and Czechs mixed with the other peoples the way that Russians or Germans didn't - at least not to the same extent. As for "German Germans" (citizens of Germany), many of them feel like Germans first and then [name of the state]-ians second nowadays, but Bavarians are a notable exception and there are a few more. Similarly, in the early days after the American independence, the people in the US identified with their states rather than with the federation. They'd be (e.g.) Pennsylvanians first and Americans second. In Germany this sentiment lives on, since the history and identity of many German federal states is much older than the first British colonies in the New world and the unification wasn't exactly voluntary in some cases (conversely, unified Germany is about 100 years younger than the US and changed borders, regimes and even split into two and reunified again since then). For example Bavaria joined more or less only because they had an incompetent king who managed to ruin Bavaria financially (by building things like Neuschwanstein and spending lavish sums on arts) and because Austria was too weak by that point to protect Bavaria against Prussia.
+Trademark okay nice Text and you are pretty much right with Everything you say, yet germany is much older than the german Countrie formed by the prussians. People identified as germans In the holy Roman empire even if they were from bavaria for example. it was the Language that defined a German. And Austria is a German state thats Simply a fact and until the nazis most Austrians also identified as Germans even After the unification of the german Empire. (Eventhough i admit that there were nationalistic movements like Adolf hitlers Father was part of one who was against the Great German Solution and wanted Austria as a seperate countrie.) But people have different opinions and since the Fall of the nazis Austrians dont See themselves as germans anymore. But historically they are a German state. I mean guess Why the brothers war is called brothers war.
More like *The Unholy German Federation* Nah, the Germans are only a mere plurality so it would be better fitting to call it *Kinda-Holy European Union*
It was holy, it was kind of roman and it was an empire. At least in medival times Holy because the kings got their titel of emperor from the pope, large portions of land were ruled by bishops and the church in general was very powerfull. This changed with the reformation and from that time on the kings just called them self emperor and did not care if the pope is actually cool with this. You could say it was roman because the emperors saw themself in the tradition of the roman ones and the papel state including rome was kind of dependent on the empire, but yeah to call it roman is a bit of a stretch and idealistic. And it was an empire because it ruled over three different parts (Italy, Burgundy and the german realms), so it was more an empire then an early form of a nation state. Until the end of the Staufer dynastie the emperors were also powerfull, this changed after the medival times when the state building was succeded on the lower levels and not on the level of the whole state. When Italy was finally lost at the end of the 30 years war it was defenetly not an empire anymore but to say it was never one is false in my mind
mxviii But what he says in this video doesn’t make any sense! The HRE didn’t have a shared economy, each of the hundreds of states had its own military and it wasn’t even a military pact, so even if one of the states would be attacked, the others wouldn’t give a shit, so how can he still go on with describing it as if it was one singular power. Because the EU today is closer to each other than the HRE was when it existed
Gus what’s the point of "adaption"? This is a centuries old empire, founded in a complete different time. You can’t just say "Hey, what if this "state" that has absolutely no resemblance to anything we have today, _just existed today_ ?! GREAT"

Actually, it was Holy, Roman and an Empire - at least at its beginning. The Empire was Holy due to the majority of Emperors being crowned by the Pope, allowing the authority of the Papacy to reign supreme. It was Holy due to its majority Catholic Christian population. The Empire was Roman due to the fact that before the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, the realm was simply referred to as the Roman Empire, the Emperor was known as an Imperator (eg: IMP CARLOS MAGNUS). It was Roman in nature and its polity saw it as such. The Multinational entity was an Empire due to the fact that it was Imperial in nature, and that there was an Emperor in charge. It was indeed a Holy, Imperial and Roman institution.
Super late reply but just because you call yourself Rome doesn't mean you are. Russia and the ottomans both did the same and they absolutely should not be considered a roman empire successor. The only legitimate successor was the eastern Roman empire/Byzantines until 1204 when the crusaders brutally destroyed it
You absolutely cannot make the argument that the HRE ever deserved to be known as Roman when it was: - Ruled by Germans - Primarily based in Germania - The Eastern Roman Empire was still alive and shared far more characteristics with classical Rome than the HRE most likely ever did Calling the HRE Roman is like calling America British: they have a couple similarities, but are ultimately very different and are by no means have any right to call themselves British when the UK exists
@@mrscoldarrow by the early Middle Ages, “Roman” was more than just “in or controlled by Rome”. “Rome” had evolved to be pretty much interchangeable with “empire” or “powerful”. Before the catastrophes of the 1200’s, the HRE was by far THE power of Europe, making it “Roman” in the sense it was Europe’s supreme empire and undeniable authority on the continent.
We could just let each of the members of the EU appoint a prince-elector that is authorized to attend a meeting where they vote on who they will force the pope to coronate as Emperor of Rome, give that person a couple ceremonial powers, and we've got it done.
Rocky Carlton maybe. But still I wouldn’t want to be suppressed by an emperor/Kaiser and neither would I want to live in the conditions of normal people (like me) in the Middle Age and I don’t think you would want that either...
One thing I've been always wondering with "What if... reunited today" is how do you manage to get your data for the parts of countries that are included in the territory in question. It's easy to get that sort of date for entire countries, but the parts must be really tricky.
Vengirni well in this case it's easy. Do to all of them being part of the European Union they already have a capital. Brussels. Most of the important data will be collected there if needed.
It was an Empire. Maby just look at the times before the Habsburgs. You know the times we were more centralised than France. And it had an Capitol. Aachen. While the Emperor was not living there it was the place were he had to be crowned. And it was seen as the historical capitol since Charlemane and Otto the first
Fun fact the Hre was given its name because: Holy: it was a catholic country being made by a former pope of Rome Roman Empire: it was called this because it was an attempt of restoring the western Roman Empire
same. so much. even though i am in my hetalia phase right now because i just discovered it... i will never look at countries the same, this video made me feel very weird.
im still in my hetalia phase too. except there was a point where it just destroyed everything lol we will never look at countries the same way again ever
The real problem with it was that for most of its existence, the title was mostly nominal. The imperial position had lost almost all of its power and was mostly about prestige and some taxation and levy (the amount of which could vary quite a lot depending on the whim of the local Prince). By the time Voltaire made this famous quote the empire was just an empire in name only indeed. Of course it wasn't the same way during the times of Otto I but this is obvious that things radically change in so many centuries. In the end, it's imperial status is indeniable for its first three centuries, but after that it became less and less and tangible with the passing of time
Yes, please! It would be a pretty interesting video, considering how different in terms of power, size and demographics a modern Kalmar Union would be compared to other "What if ... reunited" videos RLL has done in the past.
1/3 of the nations were not even Germanic lol, genetic tests show that even modern Germans east of Magdeburg are German-language speaking Slavs - Hitler would shit himself if nazis had genetic testing back then.
Pushing both France and Britain almost the entire way back to Paris despite standing on its own while defeating the Russians in the East and keeping the Italians, Serbs and Romanians pinned down with their Allies is considered "rekt like fuck" by you? It took three mayor European Powers four years as well as the Assistance of the US, Italy and numerous minor Nations to contain Germany which was only assisted by two dying Empires. Also the UK and France didn't invade Germany because their troops as well as their reserves were also exhausted. If they saw any chance of doing it without the number of Casualties exceeding the number of Reserves brought into the war they would have done it. "Manners and Humanity" didn't matter after 4 years of fighting.
Hell no, they didn't invade due to the treity made by themselves, in 1918 Germany was in bankrupt and we saved the country by lots of trades. The treity of Paris was mentionning to NOT INVADE nor taking any land from Germany because the people weren't responsible of Wilhelm II actions. But 20 years later, some people like Hitler did a coup and wanted to go in war against East Europe, then the Phony War started and you know the rest of the story.
Prussia (the region) was never a part of Holy Roman Empire. The map from Wikipedia you used as the source of your video is an ahistorical fantasy of one guy by the name of Ernio48.
The Empire consisted of princely states and although many had land outside the Empire, they just combined the territories of all princes. Looks better on the thumbnail.
Erikas Valnickis but the Kingdom of Prussia(1701-1918), was actually just Brandenburg that used Prussia as an excuse to call Frederick I, king...Brandenburg ended up with Prussia, then named its whole nation prussia even when most of them were Bradenburgers
During Charles V reign it was the peak of the Holy Roman Empire, because he was also King of Spain, so he had Southern Italy and the Spanish colonies as well under his control !
That's because they were never imperial territories, in a strict sense. Charles V ruled on Spain (and colonies) as King of Spain and on Southern Italy as King of Naples; those were two different political entities with different laws and governing bodies (e.g. Charles was legitimated as king of Spain by the Spanish Cortes, which he had to deal with for spanish affairs, but the Cortes didn't have a say for German matters, just like the German princes for Spanish matters). Another example: George III of the UK was also prince of Hannover, but you wouldn't say Hannover has ever been a part of the UK.
Not really his reign was plauged by wars with France, the Ottomans, Italians, Scandinavians and Dutch (That was more during his son Philip II reign tough). In adittion that would have been the Spanish empire height (conquest of Maya's and Incas), since for the HRE it was the time of the Great Italian wars and 30 years war (real WWI).
The peak of the HRE came from the reign of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, an Italo-German monarch that was King of Sicily, of Jerusalem, of Italy and Germany

The EU gathers very specific data about European regions (you can find them on eurostats), which allows them to better manage EU funds and aid.
For a reference, the combined GDP of Germany, France, and Italy alone is $9.3T, so he certainly didn't add them in.
As has been pointed out before, Eurostat collects and provides all sorts of data by statistical regions (NUTS1/2/3, with NUTS3 being the smallest subdivisions). This makes such estimates easy and reasonably precise.

Aren't austrians germans with a different country name?
(Eventhough i admit that there were nationalistic movements like Adolf hitlers Father was part of one who was against the Great German Solution and wanted Austria as a seperate countrie.)
But people have different opinions and since the Fall of the nazis Austrians dont See themselves as germans anymore. But historically they are a German state. I mean guess Why the brothers war is called brothers war.

It was holy, it was kind of roman and it was an empire. At least in medival times
Holy because the kings got their titel of emperor from the pope, large portions of land were ruled by bishops and the church in general was very powerfull.

Atlas But, by the time Voltaire made his famous comment it would have more accurately be described as the Nominally Christian German Confederation.
Super late reply but just because you call yourself Rome doesn't mean you are. Russia and the ottomans both did the same and they absolutely should not be considered a roman empire successor. The only legitimate successor was the eastern Roman empire/Byzantines until 1204 when the crusaders brutally destroyed it
You absolutely cannot make the argument that the HRE ever deserved to be known as Roman when it was:
- Ruled by Germans
- Primarily based in Germania
- The Eastern Roman Empire was still alive and shared far more characteristics with classical Rome than the HRE most likely ever did
Calling the HRE Roman is like calling America British: they have a couple similarities, but are ultimately very different and are by no means have any right to call themselves British when the UK exists
@@mrscoldarrow by the early Middle Ages, “Roman” was more than just “in or controlled by Rome”. “Rome” had evolved to be pretty much interchangeable with “empire” or “powerful”. It was an Empire. The nature of the Empre could be disacussed; but an Empire none the less.
Why isn't the roman republic an empire?
indeed, they had an elected kaiser
The real problem with it was that for most of its existence, the title was mostly nominal. The imperial position had lost almost all of its power and was mostly about prestige and some taxation and levy (the amount of which could vary quite a lot depending on the whim of the local Prince). By the time Voltaire made this famous quote the empire was just an empire in name only indeed. Of course it wasn't the same way during the times of Otto I but this is obvious that things radically change in so many centuries. In the end, it's imperial status is indeniable for its first three centuries, but after that it became less and less and tangible with the passing of time

GAMERKAZUYA eiether one works
1914 Germany was rekt like fuck, and props to them, the UK and France didn't invade the country because they've some manners and humanity

It's actually Germany, but don't worry about it.
Prussia (the region) was never a part of Holy Roman Empire.
The map from Wikipedia you used as the source of your video is an ahistorical fantasy of one guy by the name of Ernio48.
this is correct as many nations held land outside the empire, but i think its acceptable here as even saying it was a nation is wrong
The Empire consisted of princely states and although many had land outside the Empire, they just combined the territories of all princes. Looks better on the thumbnail.
Ahem. You might be confused with the German Confederation.
It is correct, since Prussia haven't separated yet by that time. The first kind of Prussia state was established in 1525
Erikas Valnickis but the Kingdom of Prussia(1701-1918), was actually just Brandenburg that used Prussia as an excuse to call Frederick I, king...Brandenburg ended up with Prussia, then named its whole nation prussia even when most of them were Bradenburgers
During Charles V reign it was the peak of the Holy Roman Empire, because he was also King of Spain, so he had Southern Italy and the Spanish colonies as well under his control !
Yeah, I don’t quite get why they left Carlos and the Spaniards out of the picture.
Iulius Constant Cornelio Spain, south Italy and the viceroyalties in the Americas weren't part of the hre only the Spanish Netherlands
RealLifeLore I really like your videos regarding the reunion of historical empires! Can you please do the same for the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth?
oh yeah would love to see that. I wish Russia, Poland-Lithuania and HRE would coexist, but this time more peacefully :3
