My Thoughts on Monster Hunter Stories 2 After 35 Hours (No Spoilers)

- So I’ve been playing Monster Hunter Stories 2 Wings of Ruin over the last week or so, but I haven’t been able to finish it because I refuse to rush through the story, so this is as close as we’re getting to a review for now. I can’t wait to share more of this game with you guys.

The bit about the story sure sounds similar to Stories 1. Stories 1 had an appealing intro as well, but took a while to *really* take off after that. But, this being a monster taming game, I was always engaged by the mechanics of building my party, gathering mats or tracking down new monster eggs. These types of games often rely heavily on you deep-diving into the creature mechanics. Some more than others but Stories definitely is on the "more" side of things, at least for me.
Can't wait to get my copy of the game now. It's gonna be great.

regarding the egg glow that determines their quality, I like to think of it like this:
-No glow=hot garbage
-Golden glow=pretty good
-Rainbow glow=GROSSLY INCANDESCENT!!

later on in high rank i actually prefer gold eggs because the rainbow are almost always just a rainbow gene when i have alot of those already where as the gold are more likely xl genes

Just got 3 notifications for mhst2 reviews at the same exact time from arrekz, switchup, and you. Lol I'm super stoked on the game! Have the CE preordered, loved the 1st game and looks like this one will get a lot of support.
There are a few seconds load time between map and battle screen. The art style is amazing. Gameplay is great. Music is very good. The voice acting is excellent.
This game top MH stories 1 in every aspects.
though there are some things they cut out from the first game that i loved:( like finding poogies :( i loved searching for them
I just want a Great Jaggi egg. I don't know why, but I love that moster and his weird bark.

Edit: also, in the gameplay portion I think the game has a way of letting you know which monster is weak to which weapon before you even attack it by just looking at their design. If it has a ton of scales, a piercing weapon would do more damage, fur would be sword, and shells would be hammers. Just my opinion though
My biggest gripe with the game is that two of our Battle Buddies use Ice element Flying Wyverns

Also, 2 of the buddies use bow, 2 use SnS. Not a single Hammer or GL, my two favorite weapons D:
145 hours of play so far. It's given me the desire to fire up World and / or Rise after this.

Not gonna lie I recently bought mh: stories for my android phone and managed about 20 hours before I gave up.
Pre ordered stories 2 after spending about the same amount of time in the demo. I am absolutely in love with this game. The thrill of finding a new egg pattern and rummaging through a gold den nest while a monster sleeps, praying to rngesus that those rainbow particles show is something else. And gunlance is in it. Thanks for your coverage ruri I'm a father myself and I appreciate you taking your time to keep us entertained.
What's the appeal of RNG? It baffles me. Nobody says the best part of Diablo 2 is grinding for a rune you have less than a 1% chance of finding.
@@O1OO1O1I agree RNG isn't the best system of reward for a players hard work. It's mostly disapointing and frustrating. Unfortunately it's a system that MH as a series has adopted and it seems likely to stay in some shape or form in every title.
As a monster Hunter fan in general I and I'm assuming most players will have a favourite monster from the series, the potential of obtaining that monster when you find a new egg with a pattern you don't recognise is always there. It's still RNG but it just felt a little less disappointing when you've got to jump through the extra hoop of opening the egg with your fingers crossed after finding it. I just liked the game RNG or not, sorry you didn't feel the same Bruce.
Two things I'm wondering :
- How hard is the game?
- Can we control the human NPCs that fight with us, and how often a NPC fights with us? When I played the demo, I didn't like the fact that we couldn't control the NPC and that it was doing a lot of damages and used items. I felt like I had... not enough control over the fight, being only able to choose the actions of only 2 "fighters" of 4 in total
you cant control human npc but i think its safe to say theyll always priortize your health

Come on bro, it's not about which game used cellshading first, it's about telling people that anything cellshaded is not copied from Botw. Which is a dumb thing to say, but you know people are dumb
This was my immediate thought as well. I don't care about who did it 1st. I love the cell shaded art style. This was just an inaccurate thing to say.
@@Rytom the bigger problem here is framing the cell shading as a negative point towards the graphics. The phrasing in the narration of the review is still wrong but the implication that the cell shading is somehow a negative is. Games with cell shading don’t need to have hyper realistic textures because that’s not what the art design is about.

Super Rad is kind of an asshole, I mean his history series of MH was great, my main issue is that he praise THE FUCK out Monster Hunter Gen 3 like Way too much, he only uses the longsword, trash on other weapon styles and so on, he is like a Moron but you don't see it until you watch a lot of his videos.

I really wished that they would have kept the wing design for Ratha cause ((( Spoilors ahead for those who dont like to be spoilort and havent reached to the point in the story after you leave the Snow Area to go to the desserd area ))) after he unlocks his wings he basicly looks like 90% like a normal Rathalos even tho he's supose to be a special Rathalos and the only change he got is that his inner wing pattern is suppose to loock diffrent and the dark blue on his back is now black .... AND THATS IT !
Don't get me wrong i still love our sweet boy Ratha but it really is just disapointing that they dint do any kind of big change in his design . He would have looked 1000000% better , cooler & more special like a one of a kind Rathalos that hes suppose to be if the would have just kept the wings as they where in design .
I really hope that if theyr gonna do a Monster Hunter Stories 3 that they make our Ratha way more noticable from other Rathalos and other Rathas
I loved the Pokémon games and the idea behind them. But never became obsessed like most of my friends. (Loved collecting the cards tho!) but this looks like my Monster collecting game to obsess over. I’m a world rookie but damn monster Hunter swept in and became my top three favorite series in gaming. So I’m HYPED.

Good video, as per the norm. One thing I'd say is Barroth using speed makes sense. He doesn't hit overly hard (power) and he's a wrecking ball (so, not technical) and his choo-choo train/tea charge the he does is very fast!
To be honest, the attack types seem to be more determined by the monster's "body type" than anything else, e.g. Narga, Tigrex and Barrioth are all speed.
@@davidmurray3542 Hmm.. interesting. We may be playing some semantics here, because yes although their body types are similar, I'd argue that their body types are similar because they're all fast. Like, historically, Tigrex and Nargacuga are pretty damn fast!
I absolutely adore the art style, the vibrant colors and stylized cel shaded look are just perfect. The Switch demo genuinely gave me a headache with its unstable framerate so i'll get it on PC for a smoother experience. Can't wait for Friday.

I enjoyed the demo but that performance made me dizzy for the first time ever playing a game, Ruri I have to disagree HARD with you saying that fps doesn't matter just because it is turn based. The animations are great but they look awful because of the terrible performance.
I will be going for the pc version because the switch version is just bad imo
To each their own right? I have absolutely no desire for high graphical fidelity. If there is a list of game needs I have, graphics is towards the bottom. That's why I'm cool with the switch version. Im just glad people are supporting the game, so PC or switch, im just glad its getting the support and reviews it deserves.
are you sure it was the fps that made you dizzy and not the camera movement they have there. I was also getting dizzy and weird but on the options i turned off the camera movement option and i stopped having that problem. FPS drops are also a problem there but the camera was the thing making me sick.

@@strailz4302 I never expected the switch to run 60 fps 1080p. Rise is amazing on the switch and having a blast in it but they should just add a fps cap on the switch.

I saved my bottle caps for the weapon and armor the melynx has I only got the weapon I couldn’t get the armor I fully upgraded my weapon and the pukie pukie armor I was using I used the rest of my bottle caps on attack nutriment

The use of regional accents to represent the different continents (Leftheria is Northern English, Mor Ardain is Scottish, Gormott is Welsh, etc.) was a really smart idea and makes the English dub a lot more interesting than the really average Japanese dub. However, there are some points where stuff doesn't match up in cutscenes because the voice actors weren't directed clearly enough.
On the other hand, Torna the Golden Country has the regional accent detail AND has good cutscene direction.

Monster hunter stories has way more in game content and variety than rise. I know is stories is not like the main games but it's just facts. I'd hope rise was like stories.
I love this game. My only gripes are that our character relies on Navirou to carry the conversations and story (which is sometimes funny, others annoying and downright frustrating). I wish our protagonist had more personality than that, I never got into the empty personality avatar thing. My other gripe is Navirou's appearance... I could put up with his annoyance if he at least looked like the other felynes in the game, which are super cute, why is he the only deformed one?

I wish they would just go full turn based and kick the power, speed & tech attack system..
That's sorta what makes the game unique. If we remove that and implement the generic RPG systems of various different skills to choose from, it'll make your monster randomly picking moves a pain. And if we were to control them all the time instead there's nothing separating the monster from your main character. It won't feel like a living creature, but rather an extension of your tools.

Since it Jrpg game I will do what I did with Scarlet Nexus and skip all the reviews and the videos about it until I finish the game first.
and after I played the game for bit, my first impression about it is as follow:
Story: silence main character = - points automatically
Visual: on switch annoying frame rate drop but the animation is really good
gameplay: this kind of game normally shine from mid to late game so is hard to tell now
My gripes with the stories games is they seem to be lacking in a post game story (ik ik normal monster hunter doesn’t do that but come on you can’t blame me for my preferences) and the lack of interaction between the player, our monsties, and our friends and their monsties
Rurikan sorry to tell you this but ZELDA WIND WAKER DID THE CELLSHADING WAY BEFORE MH STORIES 1, so maybe you should edit that part of the video (I have no idea if Wind weaker was the first to use cellshading I think not but is the 1st game I played with that style)
Cellshading is just a medium that’s been used for decades. It was only brought up so people wouldnt just say its a botw ripoff. Not a point you should be focusing on so much
If you didn't expect barroth to use speed you need to rethink how you interpret monsters cuz that one is a given.
Hey Rurikhan, regarding the NPC's that assist you in the story like Kayna and Avinia, can you choose to go solo? or does it force you to use one of them at all times?
Still playing the game myself but it seems story playthrough forces a partner on you except for some parts
@@SephyClone7 from my experience getting rid of partners comes in the postgame but by then, you kinda want to have a companion with you to speed up the fights!
so by the time we're rid of them, we already want them back lol
Monster Hunter Stories is pokemon's 'cooler daniel'
I'm going through BotW finally now and it has PLENTY of framerate dips. I didn't hear about those years ago when it came out. People gunna hate what they gunna hate.
Personally, I'm STOKED for Stories 2. If you play in handheld like me, then there's virtually no dips at all. Hori controller ftw.
Yeah, Breath of the Wild has a ton of frame drops. It's especially noticeable in Korok Forest, all the foliage and particles really take a toll.
That said, I am not one to complain about framerate. It's not a deal breaker for me, and it's a turn based game so it's not like it will impact gameplay
@@conorb.1901 It's not a deal breaker for me either. I just wanted to point out that one game that is rated 10/10 has framerate dips while people will cite framerate as the #1 reason they won't get Stories 2.
My Hori splitbad is going to get some real use with this one for sure. Didn't play Rise in Handheld too much if I could help it, but this type of game is perfect for it to me. Easily pausable, not a big deal if you get distracted and overall pretty relaxing.

In the first game you could make a Deviljho spit poop by giving it some Congalala genes, so I'm almost certain you can do that here as well. I made a laser show Gravios with all types of elemental lasers and an explosive Arzuros in the first game, just to put into perspective how much is possible.
Roughly how far into the game/story do you think you are? I too like to spend my time when playing rpgs and I love long games so wondering if this game will give me 100+hrs
I'm pretty sure you can get 100 hours no doubt. Stories 1 was like that. Remember monster hunter main thing is being able to spend hours and hours in the game

Im playing in japanese bc of Navirou. He sounds absolutely grating to my ears in english. It makes him enjoyable for me and I hated him in MHST.

I was kinda disappointed in the combat when I played the demo. It had a lot going on, but it always felt like there was one right answer for any given situation. That, combined with the fact that I only control 1.5 out of 4 party members made it feel like something that I have to do rather than something I get to do.
I love the art style, and the trailers always grab me so I'm sure I'd like the story, but this might be one I try again a little later.
Also, Navirou is the ugliest felyne I've ever seen 😅

As long as you are enjoying the product who really gives a single hoot what language you prefer. Some things are better in the native languge while some things are better in English such as anime. Sometimes everyone speaking Japanese makes literally zero sense. Take attack on titan for example the dub is better and suits the world a lot more
The only example I (and I insist on the I) experience just one game who was imo better in english than japanese which is strange enough because the games is in tokyo... It's Persona 5 (royak or not). I find that Japanese voice actor release more of their voice and are more emotional in general. So yeah japanese is better IN MY EYES 95 % of the time, but sometimes another language can be incredible too or even better (I am French so sometime it is better in my language... For example Spiderman ps4 was incredible in french even though it is in new york and all...)

Dude stories didn’t come out long before BOTW. The first footage of BOTW was more than 2 years before stories and released only months after.
Also zelda wind waker came out years before stories so they copied that Zelda and took ideas from the BOTW trailer :-p

This game makes me want Monster Hunter World Stories sooo much! I am not a fan of cartoony graphics. The game looks good. But it looks like every other Switch game.
Personally, I've really enjoyed seeing classic MH monsters with an anime twist - they're true to the originals just with a different art style.

I love the game but your partner ai sucks. Like you can change your personal monsties attacks if you have kinship built up. But the people they team you up with who often call you inexperienced fight like idiots. I'm trying to do trials right now and you have kill a thing in x amount of turns but my teammates absolutely refuse to use any attacks the monster is weak to. Even though we have fought the damn thing like a million times in the wild and in the story im the noob and they are the experienced rider dude.

Can you move genes on a Monstie without the rite of channeling? I'm raising various Monsties in the demo that have Rainbow gene but the gene isn't in the center so I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time raising them.
Not exactly sure what you mean, without rite of channeling you can't move the genes at all. But with rite of channeling, you can move any monster gene to any position you want on another monster.
The reason people HATE Navirou's voice is cuz he is as annoying as Scrappy from the live action Scooby-Doo movie
