Really nice to see the items, being reviewed, in action. It's one thing to say one is more this than that one, but seeing it is another universe. Thanks.
thanks for the tip mate - when mid photoshoot I give this feedback - when she is patiently standing around so I can do focus tests - she can stand however she likes :)
thanks for your comment Rick, i have a Yongnuo YN-560 sped light that works really well, the problem i'm having is in good lighting as well, the more i think about it i think its me rushing the shot..
On most new lens designs, yes. On Nikkors with an ultasonic drive motor, the switch is labelled (expanding the abbreviations) "manual" and "autofocus/manual". USM Canon lenses are also full-time manual override in AF.
Thanks for that. I've never tried one of those Gorillapod's before and was a little concerned it may not be durable enough to handle the weight of a larger camera, even my relatively light Sony a57. Thanks.
Really really nice test. Focus performance is so much about how it "feels" and if you miss a situation or not. Great example of where a video review works better than text and photos.
I'd love to check the continuous focus tracking. Use the center focus point and try to have someone run towards the camera while snapping at the full speed of the camera to see if the motor is fast enough to track. Great test of the single shot ability though
It appears that the Tamron rotates at a slower speed than the Canon. It also seemed that it stopped precisely where it needed for correct focus. I doubt there would be any noticeable difference in speed when shooting at focusing differences of less than 5 meters.
Thank you for your effort,,, Will you do a review about Sigma 24-105 mm f\4 soon ? I am actually a little bit hesitate between the Sigma 24-105mm f\4 ,, Tamron 24-70mm f\2.8 and Canon 17-55mm f\2.8 !!! Can i have your advice which one to buy as a walk around lens for my canon 70D .
I was just about to say something along those lines but this is perhaps the best review of all the "big players" where 24-70/2.8 lenses are concerned that I've seen so far. It'd be very interesting to have a Tamron 24-70/2.8 pitted against the older 28-75/2.8 Tamron lens though. Just a thought.
autofocus wwwwhat? Hello Marie! Good Stuff Matt. I love these show downs, because it isn't until they are compared side by side that we see the differences. For me the Sigma seems significantly slower at focus. I'm a Canon user so for auto focus, so far, the extra $1000 gets me noticeably faster focus. Correction this is not the 24-70mm 2.8L USM II. If the Mark I is that much faster than the New Tamron, I wonder how much faster the new Mark II will be.
What model of Gorillapod is that? There's at least 2 that's recommended for use for dSLR/SLR's due to the heavier load capacity they have. Very interesting video, I've been curious about the new Tamron 24-70 F2.8 for a while and its nice to hear that its well thought of.
@thatnikonguy why would someone mention the Nikon have a better focusing setup, when you specifically talk about that in the video. Great job, keep it up!
Can you do a test on the Tamron 24-70 continuous focus mode? Will there be a lot of focus hunting on the Tamron or is it affected by the camera instead?
Hey Matt, is the 24-70 nikon the most up to date lens available?( for nikon) I ask this question, for i was wondering how good the new canon 24-70 will be in comparison. Once again , great work !!
@Craggles: you seemed suprised that he would used the D700. Nikon has not replaced this camera yet and it is still a top performer. FYI, the D800 IS NOT the replacement model.
I pretty much agree, but I understand that 24mm vs. 28mm is quite a diffrence in every aspect, from the angle of view, to the difficulty in building such a wide seeing lens, so the comparison wouldn't really be accurate in many ways...
Hi Matt, love your stuff mate..I'm looking for advice.. i just bought a 2nd hand Tamron 28-75mm 2.8f SP Aspherical XR Di lens.. A lot of my images appear to be a little soft and not as sharp as i'd like, someone told me that it could be calibrated to my D7000 what are your thoughts? Is the lens shit or can i calibrate it? or better still do i still have a lot to learn? Aron
Do you have any problem with the autofocus? It's hard to nail the focus when the background is having more contrast than the subject even if i put the focus point at her or his face. Any recommendations? I'm using d7000 with 24-70 nikon
Hi brother, ,let me ask you how do find The Tamron 24-70 2.8?I want to buy to use for my weddings,i wish could buy the Canon 24-70 2.8II but i can't afford it at the moment.Should i buy it for stills? Thanks man
Hey Nikon people Nikon d600 FX body rumor....hey matt I'm planning get d nikkor 70-200vrii this week and I'm cant decide if will go with this 24-70 nikor plz need ure opinion
I know it wouldn't be "accurate" but a lot of people buy the 28-75mm instead of a 24-70mm because of it's incredible price point but quite great quality! I really want to get me a 28-75mm.... once i have the money :D (being only 16 and in New Zealand it's quite hard lol)
I have never seen you do a review where nikon does not come out on top?? In Tony Northrups review the Tamron beat the nikon in most areas with the exception of lens flare. Who is right?? You or Tony??
i would be too - she was patiently standing around whilst I ran focus tests and talked to the camera! haha not he most fun. Rest of the shoot was great fun though.
We bought three lenses and I've been photographing with the Sigma 24-70 for Canon for two weeks on both 1DmkIII and 7D. The result was horrible. At first I thought it was malfunction with on the camera, but after testing two lenses on two different cameras both lenses I tried out was back focusing. Contacting the supplier he told me that 2 out of 10 lenses was calibrated this way and that I needed to send back all three lenses to recalibrate them. Thumbs down for Sigma.
***** i think thats how it should be. its good that the focal length doesnt move so easily. Gotta say, though..theres something about the Canon 24-70. Video footage just feels better and more cinematic. the lens flare is amazing compared to the other 3rd party versions. Very sad but true..gotta spend all this money for a Canon :\
Really nice to see the items, being reviewed, in action. It's one thing to say one is more this than that one, but seeing it is another universe. Thanks.

I love these tests! Even though he's clearly a Nikon fan and user, he's not biased in the testing of each of these products. Fantastic job thus far.

@craggles1234567 really? d700 is 4.5 years old, a year older than canon... vs a brands new mark 3?
Thanks for that. I've never tried one of those Gorillapod's before and was a little concerned it may not be durable enough to handle the weight of a larger camera, even my relatively light Sony a57.
Thanks.

it is fantastic. I got another one for canon!

Brilliant! Fantastic work, as usual, btw, Matt! :)
Good (honest) testing putting the performance in perspective with the pricing.
Thank you for your effort,,,
Will you do a review about Sigma 24-105 mm f\4 soon ?

Hey Matt,
I shoot with 2 pentax one full frame and one APSC. The only option I have is the Sigma. Will it work well on both cameras.
Thanks.

thank you! With my name and ties to Nikon - I am often written off as being biased, even when being 100% honest... cheers

Sigma or Tamron?
never had a tamron lens but this one looks tempting
Thanks for your reply.. i assume the fine tune feature is in my menu??
i'll have a play and see if this helps..thanks again
I wonder, though. How well would the 3rd party lenses hold up in extreme conditions?
Matt I need to see the photos of her to compare clarity ;-)
Hi Johnathon thanks for the reply will give it a go
I really wish the tamron 28-75mm was included in these tests so we could see the performance of the cheap but great end vs the more expensive ones.
............. hence grouping them by body, and... oh why bother. Yes, great point.
oh, going to check it out. Thank You! keep up the great work
Just for fun, do you have an old Nikon 35-70 AF f/2.8 to test with? I know it's an old dog but it was the pro lens of it's time.
I pretty much agree, but I understand that 24mm vs. 28mm is quite a diffrence in every aspect, from the angle of view, to the difficulty in building such a wide seeing lens, so the comparison wouldn't really be accurate in many ways...

With the Tamron 24-70 lens on Does anyone’s Camera make the focusing noise while on video ? And if so how do you fix it
@dumkopf build quality video coming in part 5
im thinking to buy the 24-70mm 2.8 from sigma for concerts.. wouldit be good for concerts ( how good is it in low light and moving subjects?
Do you have any problem with the autofocus? It's hard to nail the focus when the background is having more contrast than the subject even if i put the focus point at her or his face. Any recommendations? I'm using d7000 with 24-70 nikon

Hey Nikon people Nikon d600 FX body rumor....hey matt I'm planning get d nikkor 70-200vrii this week and I'm cant decide if will go with this 24-70 nikor plz need ure opinion
So the Sigma quality is comparable to the Canon L series lens ?
Mmm neat always nice to hear cheaper options.
what do you think, a second hand nikon 24-70 or a new tamron 24-70?
I know it wouldn't be "accurate" but a lot of people buy the 28-75mm instead of a 24-70mm because of it's incredible price point but quite great quality! I really want to get me a 28-75mm.... once i have the money :D (being only 16 and in New Zealand it's quite hard lol)
Thanks brother.i'll get my one soon:) and i'll let you know what i think.
Thanks again
Great review. I would be happy to buy you a beer. I own a Tamron 18-270 mm lens. Great pictures. Sharp as a knife.
Hi Matt, Is it worth buying this lens Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC USD with 7D Mark2 or 5D Mark 3 still better
***** what was the question
the canon has a micro mode on the 24-70?
YES buddy, I already ahve - please check my playlists.
People complain about Canon 5D Mark II AF system on low light situations. Otherwise, in bright, light they are all good.
will the Tamron focus in d5100? please answeeerr
Rest of the shoot was great fun though.
can you make this with the 70-200 mm?
hard to tell
I would be happy for my camera to focus on that model with any lens.

may I know the location?
Does it get f2.8 at 70 mm range????
thank you, great job!
UR A NIKON GUY BUT U WAS HONEST 1 I LOVED THAT
thats why I compare them to themselves
Re: Tamron on Canon. They should change the gold ring to red. Ala Sigma : But why are all sigma red now? Red sigma doesnt look right on a Nikon.
News update!!!Nikon el-EN15 battery recalling due to overheatting ....check yours....
till now im confusing, where to go,forget the L lense
What happened to Marie, she was in like 3 videos and we've never seen her since. Matt should do a 4years later video on her. Maybe she quit modeling.
huh?
I found my sigma for $300 used. It was a total steal.
it is a mark 2 :)
0:33 - 0:35 Standard Operating Procedures ;)
You can't compare focus on a 5d mk2 and a d700!!
I have one too with a d7000 as well. Its soft as shit. Really unhappy with it.
Matt, Matt Matt, where is the Sony Zeiss 24-70????????? there is another sheriff in town
old son.
dude that models rib cage almost made me loose my dinner.

Why is she almost naked and you wearing a coat lol😂. This is a lens test 😂
gorillapod FOCUS
lemme tell you about my "FOCUS".... my entire FOCUS was on the girl.
nice cam btw.
@thatnikonguy hahaha deflowered lol
Proud Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L USM owner here :)
Good job..she is wearing platforms and leaning over uncomfortably...but its a lens video not fore portraits...great job again.
0:32 trying to fly :D
Not the best test since the Nikon has a much better autofocus than the Canon.
"she's crazy" lmfao~~
Nikon definitely has a slower focus than the Canon.
Great overview and info. Very helpful. Say hi to Marie for me. :)
The Modell. What the hell?
This is better :-)
Is it always winter in Sydney when you shoot videos? Hahaha never looks like its an Australian day, or you never dress like its one...
Nice review. Get the model a sandwich, stat!
WHAT ABOUT MANUAL FOCUS for US Video Guys?
.....People complain about SIGMA for having STIFF Focus Ring. Is that True?!
+eladbari focus ring if fine, the focal length one is very stiff
***** i think thats how it should be. its good that the focal length doesnt move so easily. Gotta say, though..theres something about the Canon 24-70. Video footage just feels better and more cinematic. the lens flare is amazing compared to the other 3rd party versions. Very sad but true..gotta spend all this money for a Canon :\
dude why are your legs for like a 340 pound guy and ur head is for a 145 pound guy
lol i ususally dont write comments but this is good one ahahhaahahahahaha
phuck i always thought this guy was thin but lol lmao!!!!
Hahahahaha! I am also thinking about that...!!! :D
Honestly, I'm looking more at Marie than Matt. But hey, whatever works for you.
i think it's the camera lens distortion more than anything lol. Maybe he's using a wide angle for video and he's on the outer edge.
BUY A SPEED LIGHT.
NIKON SB- 800 900 600 700
Oh my god! I though she was kinda hot in the first clip, but when it switched to the bikini I changed my mind. Holy protruding ribs, batman!
you should make these videos unlisted.
holy crap her ribs
LOL
Matt stop picking up street girls. She's so high! crazy as fuck.
