Its always been suggested to me that the best idea is to get the lens and teleconverter from the same manufacturer. However before you go out and get one, I'd try and confirm if the lens will still autofocus with the teleconverter attached - as some won't.
Maybe you could just import all of the shots with the tamron in lightroom with a preset that has a positive value for the highlight tone priority to offset the amount of vignetting?
Great video! I'm seriously thinking about upgrading my sigma 24-70mm 2.8 to the Nikon version, and this video helped steer me in the right direction! I've heard it'll be much better quality and will be a great addition to my Nikon family, so it was really nice to see it in action. Thanks!!
You might want to put in annotations on the flare tests to say the mark 2 24-70L is much better with flare, and that's where a lot of the added costs come from.
I can't decide which one to go for. I thought the Sigma is quite good to upgrade from the kit lens but this video has changed my mind.. and I'm actually on budget but can afford to buy the Tamron. Which one is better deal for me? considering both image quality and affordability. oh and yes, Im using a canon 650D just to mention.
I know they don't make the 70-200, I was just wondering how Nikon's VRII is for video compared to Tamron's VC. Say set them both at 70mm for an equal comparison, and I watched the 70-200 but don't remember as much concentration on hand held video, I'll watch it again to be sure.
I'm curious if the Nikon 24-70 is worth purchasing over the Tamron 24-70. The price difference is only $350 ($1600 versus $1250). The comparison is great, but it seems like such a difficult toss-up. There's a size difference which also comes into play I think?
Essentially as Matt said, lose the vignetting and softness at the edges. Because you and I use sensors that are cropped in.....the best part of the glass is right in the middle, so we are only using the best part. So expect just as good performance(except maybe AF because that also depends on camera).
Excellent series Matt, but I'm puzzled about centre sharpness. On the 'Sharpness' video and the shots of the Nikon camera and lens, the Tamron was the clear winner - and yet here, in summary, you say the Nikon and Canon are sharpest. What did I miss? I guess they're all, as you say, good enough, but for weddings I'm drawn to the Tamron's VC - even though I'm a Nikon brand snob. Plus the saving vs. the Nikon gets me a prime lens like the 28mm 1.8G for my personal use.
Hi Matt, because of this video I'm perfectly convinced that I will buy the Tamron 24-70mm for my D800 because of the VC, optical quality and value for money. I hope very soon you can give us your hands on video with new Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 VC, I'm referring to the production unit not the prototype : )
Great series, I'm not a pro photographer, just like playing around with my camera, I prefer the Nikon lens but I've taken a shine to the tamron lenses lately for price reasons. This series has helped a lot. Thanks heaps!
If Sigma doesn't announce a 24-70 f/2.8 Art lens soon, I might just pick up the Tamron. It's a good deal sharper than the Nikon and has better contrast when not shooting into the sun. Now that Nikon has announced the new VR lens with the crazy price tag, that just solidifies my decision.
I thought a lot about either the Nikon or the Tamron. One fact Matt i think is important the Nikon is 77mm filter, add on the price of all those filters and extras is the Tamron chearper over all
I am wondering how the 70-200 2.8 Nikon VRII stacks up against this Tamron, (VC vs VRII.) Is the Nikon up to snuff for video, or does the focal length exclude it from regularly great hand held video? Keep up the great work!
After seeing your video, my all doubts have been clarified and I bought Tamron 24-70 instead of Canon. I have CANON 5D Mark III. I yet to receive my Tamron lens and update you later. Thanks and Keep it up
Matt, been watching your videos for over year as I've gotten more into my photography. Your videos have helped me make informed decisions on my purchases. I own all Nikon Lenses but this Tamron 24-70 is clearly a winner. I can no longer wait for Nikon to bring out a VR model in the 24-70 range. I will be purchasing this Tamron! Keep up the great work! Your videos are excellent!
Stumbled across this as found a D750 for sale with the Tamron for under £600 and wanted to know how it compared to the Nikkor, which was ideally my first choice. But I am just an amateur and getting back into photography after a few years, so I think the Tamron will do nicely. And I can always upgrade down the line.
The Tamron is really impressive. If they and other third party manufactures keep stepping up the quality maybe they can drive the price of some of the Canon and Nikon lenses down to a slightly more reasonable level.
One item I would like added to lens reviews: compatibility with teleconverters. I recently discovered that my Tamron lenses are not compatible with Canon teleconverters. Fortunately, I don't have one, but a teleconverter is on my want-list.
Hey Matt! just wondering, can you do a 17-55 f2.8 canon, 17-55 f2.8 nikon , tamron 17-50 vc f2.8 and sigma 17-50 os f2.8. As you know, many of us also shoot with a crop sensor body camera. It would really be awesome if you do a video about it =)
Adding the VR on the 24-70 got me thinking.....why doesn't Nikon (or anybody else for that matter) add VR to prime lenses? A lot of times when I want maximum sharpness I'm not shooting at 1.4 or 1.8 so would appreciate the benefit of VR.
i currently own canon 600d but will be updating the camera to 70d....want to buy the 24-70 but dont know which would be better would have bought the canon version but money is an issue at the moment......my type of wrks is weddings and also portraits....pls can u help me as i am still new and i would love to improve and become a pro...thanks
I've just watched all the videos of this comparison and would like to thank you very much. My plan was to buy the Sigma late this year but after watching it, I've just dropped this option, and and it gets worse considering they are charging 500 bucks more for this lens today. Well, thank you so much for this effort.
Great series review Matt thanks all the hard work,it must take many hours to put it all together. Like i said before this channel just keeps getting better. cheers now
Thanks for a detailed test. Good amount of test and explanation and your open mindedness to other brands. As a Canon owner the flare test was a tad concerning but otherwise happy to see how it fared in total as I'm seriously considering it. I have the classic Canon L 70-200mm 2.8 II for sports, but I need something smaller for standard pics. Of course now I'm confused about the Tamron vs Canon as you seem happy with it. Either are better than I am I'm sure, I guess I'll cross that bridge soon.
@1:22 "And the Nikon: killing it" I don't agree, even though I am a D810 shooter with Nikon glass. The Nikon shot has a significant general all over loss of contrast across the whole frame, as well as several blobs of flare in the lower middle. The Nikon flare test image looks like looking through a dirty window. The Tamron image in the flare test is far more desirable for me: even with the flare, you can still see into the scene very clearly and pick out lots of crisp contrasty detail.
Hi Matt: I just want to say thank you for those great and helpful videos. I could not decide which lenses to buy without your videos, I never thought of having Tamron, but you change my mind to get one. Thanks mate
One small thing... A lot of us have a smaller sensor, my camera is a 60D. I'd like to see how they would perform on _my_ camera. Those lenses give me a different view, and I wonder how many other things change?
I just purchased a nikon D7100 and I am seriously considering buying the nikon 24-70mm 2.8 lens to shoot my first wedding. Is it worth the purchase? Will I be able to shoot sharp images in low light with this combo?
Thanks Matt for all your hard work and honest opinions on this shootout. We need these informative head to head tests to make a firm decision on what we spend our hard earned money on, be it one or the other, without the spin and dribble from marketing, or people who dont know any better. Nice work!
Nice series Matt! I'm in a similiar situation where I'm looking to buy a professional midrange zoom, but it's also for video purposes and I can't justify buying two so I'm interested in the Tamron for its image stabilization. Now I could also get the Nikon 24-120mm f4 VR which is as cheap as the Tamron, but I'm not sure how they compare. I usually notice in these tests that these 3rd party lenses render distracting bokeh and I just bought a 135mm DC which says something about my love for bokeh.
Nice job!!! Tnx for d info. It would be nice if later on you could do a crash comparison of the same lenses (especially d Tamron & Nikon) on the same camera. Cheers from Montreal , Canada
Tokina is really good as well. My comparison is between the Tammy and the Tokina. Sigma is well below par when compared to these two. Canon and Nikon ones are more expensive. Performance wise both the Tammy and the Tokina are neck and neck. Except the AF in the Tammy is better and it handles a little easier than the Tokina, which is really heavy. Sharpness is good. Vignetting is under control. Colors are good. Contrast is good. Tammy overall will get more points because of better handling and a slightly better AF. But you cannot go wrong with the tank, aka Tokina.
great job with the series! my main work involves handheld video on a 60d, and even after watching the series, I'm still a little unsure whether I should go for the tamron due to the vignetting. i need the IS so my other option is the canon 24-105mm. any suggestions would be great! thanks.

Any idea choosing between sigma 24-70 f/2.8 vs older sigma 28-70 f/2.8 ??
I was going to get a 50mm prime lens. However, I have made my decision to get the 24-70mm Tamron. Yours and +Tony & Chelsea Northrup was the final "snapshot" I needed to complete my "series" as I have been researching like mad to figure out my next lens. Being that I am going into the portrait realm of photography, this lens seems like the best bang for buck in comparison to everything else I have looked at for my D5300. I know realize it is a cropped sensor but it's also a pro lens, and I need that for the next level for when I do get a full frame body. We can't all buy $1.5k lenses. So this will be a stellar investment being I'm buying used and looking forward to the long haul. Thanks again for a thorough review of this lens, and I will continue watching viewing your channel for future additions.
Great series of review about a series of lens which are very often used by many of the photographers and so who are of high interest ! Personnaly i really liked the comparativ of the 4 pictures puted together to compare directly (thought I would have puted them two up and two down, with the 2 nikon body directly together and the 2 canon body pictures together). Think all of the aspects have been seen deeply (exept maybe distorsion and CAs). Thanks for your great job. And keep going !!!
While I did follow along with this series of videos as they were up to your usual standards, I was disappointed that you were not able to test the lenses on the same camera(s). I can appreciate the difficulties in getting the combinations needed for the tests, but the results are like comparing apples to oranges. In this case it doesn't seem that you can reliably compare the Tamron to the Sigma as the two different cameras will have major influences on the results. to be continued jmk-nbsc
Hey mat thanks for your videos! I own a d7000 along with the 18-200vr2. 50mm 1.8. Sb600 and i am really considering to buy the nikkor 24-70 2.8 but i would like to know if the lack of VR could make a difference when shooting in low light? thanks
I have budget issues and in my country the Sigma is a lot cheaper than the Tamron. So should I consider taking Sigma or wait for months then buy the Tamron. And also how good is the Sigma in terms of video?
So I am a little confused did you say that the tamoran 24-70 f2.8 would be better for low light and sports? because I need a lens good for low light, sports and video specifically for Nikon D750.
Hey there nikon guy just lookin to see differences with the newer 24 70 from nikon....it has vr but other than that i cant tell which one is the one to break my bank for
I am very interested in buying the Tameron lens but I have heard that the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 DI VC is not fully compatible with the Canon 60D, some people have told me that it won't use all 19 focus points. Can anyone let me know if you have come across any problems using it with the Canon 60D? Many thanks.
Excellent series really professional Im for sure subscribing to this channel!!! I shoot canon and really appreciate the time you put comparing the canon with the Tamron also interesting to see the nikon and sigma.
Love these vids, and I came upon them by accident last week. Will definitely be subscribing to your channels in the near future. Like I did with the 70-200 lenses, I went out and looked at retail prices. Nikon: $2399 Sigma: $1449 Tamron: $1549 Once again, I don't believe I could justify the extra expense of the Nikon. Of the other 2, I would probably choose the Tamron-$100 seems like a not unreasonable premium to pay for VC.
Hi brother, ,let me ask you how do find The Tamron 24-70 2.8?I want to buy to use for my weddings,i wish could buy the Canon 24-70 2.8II but i can't afford it at the moment.Should i buy it for stills? Thanks man
Hi Does the Reviewed Sigma have the same quality as the Sigma 24-70mm Aspherical? Please help as I'm about to buy it but I'm skeptical about the image quality.
I hesitate to move to the full frame with this optical! I have the 700D canon with two lens : the sigma art 18-35mm f1.8 and 50-100mm. But I realize that for almost the same price I can have the 6D canon with two lens: Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD and tamron 70-200mm sp 2.8 di vc usd . For me what is important is the image quality, I want to have the best rendered. Do you think that the final tamron would be better on a full frame than the sigma on an APSC?
Please i need help, whenever i take a picture with my 24-70mm lens a darkening with black colour appears at the under or i say corner, how can i get it off?
+Idowu Victor I think you need an external flash. The lens hood is blocking the flash to the subject. Try that and see or take a photo without a flash and observe.
Hi Matt, in terms of sharpness and AF which one's better the tamron 28-75 2.8 or sigma 24-70 2.8? Coz both has no VC and theres a lot of mint condition lenses available here in my area. Cheers!
no one has tested the mark two - certainly I haven't anyway - hope to test it then.
Nice review. I already have the Nikkor 24-70mm 2,8 but might consider the Tamron for video work.
Great video! I'm seriously thinking about upgrading my sigma 24-70mm 2.8 to the Nikon version, and this video helped steer me in the right direction! I've heard it'll be much better quality and will be a great addition to my Nikon family, so it was really nice to see it in action. Thanks!!
You might want to put in annotations on the flare tests to say the mark 2 24-70L is much better with flare, and that's where a lot of the added costs come from.
thank you
I can honestly say I have never seen a more useful comparison video in my life. Thank you so much
what problems you have?
I can't decide which one to go for. I thought the Sigma is quite good to upgrade from the kit lens but this video has changed my mind.. and I'm actually on budget but can afford to buy the Tamron. Matt, I'm still choosing which one toe get between nikon and tamron, thanks for this video and it helps Me a lot.
thanks buddy!
I was hoping that you would have done a low light focus test with all four of these lenses.
hope it is fixed!
Would have been nice to see how the nikon 35-70mm f/2.8d af holds up against these four lenses.
Anyhow thanks for a great review series.
cheers
I'm curious if the Nikon 24-70 is worth purchasing over the Tamron 24-70. The price difference is only $350 ($1600 versus $1250). The comparison is great, but it seems like such a difficult toss-up. There's a size difference which also comes into play I think?

Matt, have you used the Nikkor 16-85mm? It's a slower lens than the ones mentioned here but the IQ is excellent throughout and it's very versatile.

Keep up the great work!
Top job Matt. Tamron it is for me. Going to be shooting the Formula1 in Singapore in 5 weeks. The Tamron 2.8 should suit me just fine :)
After seeing your video, my all doubts have been clarified and I bought Tamron 24-70 instead of Canon. I have CANON 5D Mark III. I yet to receive my Tamron lens and update you later.
Thanks and Keep it up
canon did put IS on their new 24mm and 28mm primes, but theyre both at 2.8
Great video series Matt! When will you be getting the Tamron on Nikon mount and will you be doing a review for that as well?
Matt, been watching your videos for over year as I've gotten more into my photography. Your videos have helped me make informed decisions on my purchases. I own all Nikon Lenses but this Tamron 24-70 is clearly a winner. I can no longer wait for Nikon to bring out a VR model in the 24-70 range. I will be purchasing this Tamron! Keep up the great work! Your videos are excellent!
Thanks Matt, this pretty much answers all my questions on the lenses and which one to go for if I buy a new D610. Leaning towards the Tamron.
Now that the Nikon 24-70 VR II is out it would be cool to see a comparison to the Tamron again.
+turkishexpress Since the new Nikkor 24-70 is worse than old Nikkor it's pointless :/
From the test shots I've seen, the sharpness is all but identical. You're paying $400-$600 more, depending on the retailer, for VR NOT WORTH IT!!!!
Hey Matt, big fan of your work. Is there any chance you make new 24-70 showdown since there is so many new stuff out there?
Stumbled across this as found a D750 for sale with the Tamron for under £600 and wanted to know how it compared to the Nikkor, which was ideally my first choice. But I am just an amateur and getting back into photography after a few years, so I think the Tamron will do nicely. And I can always upgrade down the line.
Great! Enjoy
Fortunately, I don't have one, but a teleconverter is on my want-list.
hey Matt when did you beginn to get payed for your shoots and which kind of shoot was it?
Hey Matt! just wondering, can you do a 17-55 f2.8 canon, 17-55 f2.8 nikon , tamron 17-50 vc f2.8 and sigma 17-50 os f2.8. As you know, many of us also shoot with a crop sensor body camera. It would really be awesome if you do a video about it =)

Did you notice any barrel distortion on the canon at 24mm?
I've just watched all the videos of this comparison and would like to thank you very much. My plan was to buy the Sigma late this year but after watching it, I've just dropped this option, and and it gets worse considering they are charging 500 bucks more for this lens today.
Well, thank you so much for this effort.
Great series review Matt thanks all the hard work,it must take many hours to put it all together.
Like i said before this channel just keeps getting better.
cheers now
Thanks for a detailed test. Good amount of test and explanation and your open mindedness to other brands. cheers mate - tamron dont make a 70-200 with VC. See my 70-200 series here: playlist?list=PLA0AFD86082E11BA2&feature=view_all
Thanks Matt for all your hard work and honest opinions on this shootout. Tamorn 24-70 vs Tokina AT-X 24-70 PRO ? I can't find any good reviews regarding the tokina. Can you test it and compare it vs tamron?
Also I like to see a comparison between Tamron and Tokina

whats your opinion if your shooting sports, fast sports, aperture 2.8-4, im shooting still images, do you think the tamron will be good?
As i mentioned above the category i like to photograph, do you think the tamron 24-70mm is way better than the sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4?
Very useful, I believe I will consider Tamron. Thanks!
What this lens is for portraits?
Great series of review about a series of lens which are very often used by many of the photographers and so who are of high interest !

If it was between a used at b&h Nikon 24-70 or a new Tamron 24-70 for my new d810?
Awesome run down!
Sigma looking the goods for my new 7D!
So on crop sensor there will not be any Vignetting ???
but the colors simply look different / better on using the canon vs tamron. take a look when doing video even.
hi ! another question about your style; where did you buy your jacket ?
so if you had to choose, tamron or nikon?
I know you don't like canon but I am seriously considering Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 which one would it be good for and why? 7DM2 or 5DM3
is this good for filming for outdoor sports? 24-70mm f4
I have budget issues and in my country the Sigma is a lot cheaper than the Tamron. So should I consider taking Sigma or wait for months then buy the Tamron. And also how good is the Sigma in terms of video?
great series of videos, many thanks
which is best optical the Nikon 16-36mm f4 vr2 or tokina 16-36mm 2.8 or the tamron 2.8 vr can you help me thanks any way sorrey for my bad inglish
You did an awesome job Matt! I enjoy your videos more and more. Can we see a 70-200mm 2.8 showdown next? =D
Thanks, I will choosing TAMRON
Excellent series really professional Im for sure subscribing to this channel!!! I shoot canon and really appreciate the time you put comparing the canon with the Tamron also interesting to see the nikon and sigma.
Love these vids, and I came upon them by accident last week. Will definitely be subscribing to your channels in the near future. Like I did with the 70-200 lenses, I went out and looked at retail prices.
Nikon: $2399
Sigma: $1449
Tamron: $1549
Once again, I don't believe I could justify the extra expense of the Nikon. Of the other 2, I would probably choose the Tamron-$100 seems like a not unreasonable premium to pay for VC.
Is the Sigma AF 24-70mm as good as the Sigma 24-70mm IF HSM
Hi brother, ,let me ask you how do find The Tamron 24-70 2.8?I want to buy to use for my weddings,i wish could buy the Canon 24-70 2.8II but i can't afford it at the moment.Should i buy it for stills?
Thanks man
Hi
Does the Reviewed Sigma have the same quality as the Sigma 24-70mm Aspherical?
Please help as I'm about to buy it but I'm skeptical about the image quality.
Hello would you recommend 24-70mm on nikon d7100?
I hesitate to move to the full frame with this optical! I have the 700D canon with two lens : the sigma art 18-35mm f1.8 and 50-100mm. But I realize that for almost the same price I can have the 6D canon with two lens: Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD and tamron 70-200mm sp 2.8 di vc usd .
For me what is important is the image quality, I want to have the best rendered. Do you think that the final tamron would be better on a full frame than the sigma on an APSC?
i have 600d and 6d, and that tamron 24-70 f2.8, this lens is perfect for the price, just don`t buy 6d save money for 5d...
and the winner for me is the Tamron as soon as I have the money. Great series. Thanks Matt
Please i need help, whenever i take a picture with my 24-70mm lens a darkening with black colour appears at the under or i say corner, how can i get it off?
Idowu Victor Vignetting? Just use Adobe Camera Raw or light room. There is a vignette slider.
+Idowu Victor I think you need an external flash. The lens hood is blocking the flash to the subject. Try that and see or take a photo without a flash and observe.
Amazingly detailed comparison man. Thanks for that. I got the Tamron all because of this. Cheers
sir plz tld how much zoon can be done with it
great cheers
Sony E-Mount 16-70mm f/4 OSS Zeiss or Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM for my A7S?
What about older Tokina 24-70 2.6-2.8 ?
Hi Matt, in terms of sharpness and AF which one's better the tamron 28-75 2.8 or sigma 24-70 2.8? Coz both has no VC and theres a lot of mint condition lenses available here in my area. Cheers!
loose most of the vignetting and softness at edges
