    Good review Chris as always. I’ve never placed great importance on softer images towards the edges. I suppose the sharper the better in a technical sense, but for most photographical purposes it’s not that big a deal. The reason is, most photographers place so much emphasis on using the edges to draw you towards the middle or one of the thirds which is where the main subject and focal point should be. Adding vignetting and blurring at the edges is quite common, and I would argue that too much sharpness at the edges is distracting for the majority of images (even landscapes). So all in all, a great technical review as always from a pixel peeping point of view (which is how all lens reviews should be based), but my main point is to people who get hung up on this kind of thing, perhaps shouldn’t.

    • @WEHAVETHISDREAM
      @WEHAVETHISDREAM 2 года назад +1

      Very well said!
      Pixel-peepers will never be happy.
      Same with people who constantly seek perfection in imperfect things.
      I also don’t mind vignetting.
      I add vignette in photos / videos.
      Flares or other stuff is also silly to talk about, if you are a videomaker.
      And “bokeh? Blurrier = better?
      Most people don’t study films.
      They don’t blur the hell out of a scene. They use (s)low apertures and MORE lights…
      And when people start talking bout how many blades the aperture has, then it’s over.
      LOOK AT FILMS, yeah even on Netflix.
      Count the blades and sun-stars, while putting out videos that nobody watches 🤦🏻‍♂️

When you say I shouldn't "take the lens off the camera when Image Stabilization system is at work", do you mean I shouldn't take it off even with the camera powered off and the OS switch at "on"? I thought my Tamron 24 to 70 2.8 G1 Amount adapted could handle the A7R2, but I found it a little soft at 2.8. I did get the Zeiss for the Amount adapted to my A7R2, which was a lot sharper than my Tamron, but the Tamron autofocused a lot faster than the Zeiss. That Sony A7Rm2 really punishes a lot of zoom lens previously considered sharp in the DSLR era. Really looking forward to getting the Tamron 28 to 70 2.8 G2 native to the E mount. Seems the next gen lens finally caught up with high resolution cameras.

    I have the Tamron 24-70mm G2 and, while I do love the lens and the images I can get from it, I had to do a bit of autofocus calibration on it out of the box (using the Tamron Tap-In), as at 24mm f/2.8, it would not focus properly through the viewfinder. And when I set it up for calibration, I confirmed it was front-focusing at 24mm. But, strangely, it was back-focusing at 35mm and 50mm. Has anyone noticed anything similar with the Sigma version?

    The performance in the corners is the reason why I got the Tamron G2, because I mostly use it at the wide angle and I needed the best performer at that focal lenght. It gets sharp at 70mm if you stop it down just to 3.2 (I also didn't trust SIgma's focusing accuracy on DSLR, frankly)

I am not sure whether the sigma art or the tamron G2 but from different videos and forums I found out that the Tamron is better. My concern is that if in the nearby future, I will buy the 70-200mm, there might be an issue since the sigma sports is better than the tamron g2 lens (based on videos) and the two brands' lenses rotate differently. Please any suggestion based on experience if buying the Tamron 24-70mm and a Sigma 70-200mm lens will not effect my performance since they rotate differently. Great review Chris. I saw that you reviewed the lens using the mc-11 looking for a better resolution sensor to analyze sharpness. But, be careful for corner sharpness with an adapter. I have a 100-400 for canon adapted to a Sony with the mc-11 and, at same aperture and focal length, in the sony the corners are noticeable softer than the photos taken on the canon dlsr. Maybe it has to be to some kind of light reflection inside the adapter before reaching the sensor.
    In your case you have many equipment you can compare what I'm saying to confirm what I'm thinking.
    Greetings

    • @edwinparker6732
      @edwinparker6732 4 года назад

      I'm not certain, but if you have enabled custom lens focus adjustments for use with the DSLR those same adjustments might cause misalignment with the mirrorless sensor. The original A7 sensor had quite a thick layer of glass on the front of it which also contributed to loss of corner/edge sharpness.

    • @epicyclic
      @epicyclic 4 года назад

      I'm sure discrepancy you have observed is down to what is called stack thickness. The thickness of the optical glass cover over the sensor is not the same between the different manufacturers. This is an optical element that has to be factored into the lens design, specifically for optimum corner sharpness. So this lens is most likely optimised for canon sensors like your 100-400mm is.

    I owned this lens, and while it’s a decent lens. It’s bulky and not the best manual focus for video. I went with the Sigma 24mm and 50mm prime lenses instead

    Thanks for the review of the Sigma 24-70. I want to get a decent lens around this focal range. Obvious choice is the art lens v the Tamron v the Canon EF24-70 f2.8L lens.
    How do all of these compare, setting aside price considerations?
    Thanks again.

    May I make a suggestion for CA testing. I have found a great test is one of those small waterfall fountain rocks for your backyard usually. Where the water cascades down from the top over a dark surface, preferably black. Have a bright direct light source ( sun works fine) and try to photograph it.

    • @christopherfrost

      I don't have the relevant adaptor, and this way, people can compare the image quality with the Tamron equivalent lens, which I also tested on 42mp
