    Don't let extreme pixel peeping like this dissuade you from buying this lens, it is absolutely fantastic and is probably one of the best value lenses you could ever buy. The fact that it rivals Canon and Nikon name brand lenses in day to day use sharpness and at half the price should be more than enough reason to buy it. If you have the money to shell out, by all means get the name brand if you want, because they are better in their own rights, but those benefits will be situational at best. For the average photographer, working or enthusiast, this lens is a solid buy that you will never regret.

    From my vantage point, the bokeh quality on Tamron lenses stand toe-to-toe with the best of the best from Canon and Sony's full-frame line up. Soooo buttery smooth.

    A few weeks back my 24-105 Sigma lens fell to the ground so it needed to be repaired. And so, I went on looking for a new lens, which the 24-70 came to be a good option. I first thought to buy the Canon version, because, it's Canon. But, after I went to the local camera shop, I bought this one instead. The retailer told me that it was (with the cashback action) about 500 euro cheaper and the focussing was better then that of Canon, so yeah I was sold then. I immediatly used it, because I had an event to shoot. Still didn't really use it in the dark though. But now I got a 2.8 12mm, 2.8 24-70 mm and a 2.8 70-200 mm lens, so I am obsessed clearly. I have shot quite a lot of shots already and a few things are notisable. The colours are quite good. The sharpness can be a bit better. The bokeh is very nice. It's fucking silent, it's a nice lens to touch. It's quite huge to. But oh well, I am happy with it, the 24-105 is still in the shop, but probally will be in my bag after that forever, because this is going to be my all around lens now. Only changing when I need more wide angle or zoom. Though still, because I have experience now, I do wonder what your opinion was, so I gonna watch this video now :)

  • @setaside2
    @setaside2 Год назад +1

    It won more awards in its category than Canon, Nikon, and Sigma combined... Even the vaunted Lucie Tech award. For the money it's still the best 24-70 you can purchase. Everything else will be double the price with at most a 10% benefit. The fact that you can use the Tap-In Console to reprogram the VC unit to be better for video purposes is a little known benefit. Ditto being able to change the manual focus attenuation.

    If I stop down my 24-70 G2 at 70mm just 1/3 of stop = F3.2 it is very sharp in the center on my 6D. But honestly I never had to complain about the G2 even at F2.8. I like this nice lens. Thanks for the review.

    • @rainermenes5921
      @rainermenes5921 6 лет назад +2

      First of all I am using it on a EOS 6D and I never had a real fatal focus miss even in bad light or good light at any focal length. Of cause no lens gives you 100% hit rate. I have used it at night, in churches and other occasions which are similar to weddings. From my point of view this lens is good for that. How this lens performs on other cameras or even other systems like Nikon I can't comment. I can only say compared to my experience with Sigma lenses on Canon cameras this Tamron lens is as good as my other Canon lenses in the AF department. I have used a Sigma 18-35 F1.8 on a 7D MKII and the lens is sharp but it sometimes misses the focus especially on faces. Sadly some great shoots were unusable because of missed focus. The Tamron 24-70 G2 doesn't show this issue.

    • @Exsomos
      @Exsomos 6 лет назад

      I have the 6d2 and the tamron g2. I love it. What you will need if you get the G2, unfortunately is Tamrons Tap-in consul to do some micro adjustments. It makes a huge difference with the G2. If you dont have it, try using the 6d2's DPAF and that way your guaranteed to get perfect focus. Youll see the difference if you try it. The VC and sharpness at f3.2-f3.5 and above is great, and it really isnt that bad real world at f2.8. And if it is that important for someone's shot to be razor sharp at f2.8, then they should be using primes anyways.

  • @patdaveydrums
    @patdaveydrums 6 лет назад

    I put this on my 6d a year ago and haven't taken it off since. I haven't felt the need to put a prime on except for a few portraits where I use the 85f1.8. It's not light by any means. Like Chris says. Wide open it lacks sharpness at the long end but even f3. 2 shows huge improvements at the long end. Stella at 24mm. IS is fantastic and very useful for stills and video. Build quality is very professional. Overall. For the price it's very good value.

    • @nordfresse
      @nordfresse 6 лет назад

      Hi there, I am considering this lens mostly for video. The vc/is seems very effectiv when it comes to locked off shots, but how does it behave when paning or tilting? Marc says it can be jerky, can you confirm that? Unfortunately the test sequence in the video is a bit short. I think canon lenses are kind of the benchmark when it comes to IS in video...

    • @patdaveydrums
      @patdaveydrums 6 лет назад

      @@nordfresse I've only ever used this lens on a tripod for videoing my band e.g. ruclips.net/video/BY5Croga1rU/видео.html .now I have noticed a jerkiness with the IS when it is first engaged and in portrait orientation but then as long as the shutter is half depressed it doesn't repeat. I'll have a play and let you know. I've never hand held so it's about time I tried.

    You said the most demanding professional will want a little more sharpness, but you didn't offer any ways to get that. I have compared this lens to it's Canon L series equivalent and to the Sigma Art series and based on numerous reviews the differences between this and the much pricier L series are negligible. The Tamron out-performs the Canon in some areas and seems to generally outperform the Sigma. So, being in the market for a professional 24 - 70 mm f2.8 I remain slightly unsure, however I am strongly leaning toward the Tamron.

    • @vincentnavea6999
      @vincentnavea6999 2 года назад

      I'd rather have internal zoom even though it is large as I think the barrel is prone to being offset/off center when extended than when guided by a long outside barrel like the 70-200s. so i hope someone can make one for canon ef mounts.

  • @rgaik11
    @rgaik11 6 лет назад

    I have this lens for more than 6 months and use it with 5D mark IV. it's solid lens but have some issues. I can only agree with all Christopher's findings. It could be sharper. Also distortion is not on pair with original Canon 24-70. Lately auto focus became noisier in my unit and makes high pitch sound in some situations but works fine though. Will have to sent it for inspection and maybe repair. Also it's quite picky when it comes to screw filters. With most filters vignetting is amplified to such a extend that it's unusable combination.

    • @rgaik11
      @rgaik11 6 лет назад

      I have never dropped this lens. I think it has started four maybe five months after I bought it. It's noticeable only when focusing from close to far object or infinity. As long as I focus within close distance I can't hear it. This is not a big problem for me since I don't use it for video. If you can afford go for native lens but if money is an issue this Tamron will do the job.

      Focus is going to vary depending on a lot of things but I've not had any problems in fairly low (concert) lighting. According to several channels that went into in-depth comparisons between this lens and the Canon, this is really, really close in sharpness. Reasonably the same. Since I don't have the Canon, I have not compared them personally. But it seems close enough to want a couple hundred extra bucks in my pocket. I love the contrast and color of the Tamron lenses. Even their cheaper lenses look really nice. But that's just my opinion.
      I don't recall... does the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 have IS? This does. The zoom and focus rings are reversed, as Tamron does, but I'm used to that now.

    Hi Chris, I just wanted to let you know that out of all the RUclips Tutorials and reviews I find yours to be the most informative and easiest to follow and because of this I bought the 6D Camera and then made sure ( by watching your reviews and tutorials ) that I wouldn`t be wasting my money on lenses that wouldn`t work as well and that i didn`t spend lots of money on lenses I didn`t need so now i have the perfect kit with my Canon 550D and my newly acquired Canon 6D. I am feeling 100% confident in using them all and very comfortable in using them, (unlike when I purchased the Canon 7D which I never did quite master and lost interest in almost immediately, which resulted in my leaving it in the bag and it never saw the light of day - Luckily I bought it second hand for $400 Australian so I never lost too much money). I now have the 85mm f1.8 ( which I bought before i bought the 6D) as I work in low light and concert environments a lot so I quickly learned I needed a Camera that would knock the results out of the ball park. So now the combination of 550D and 6D accompanied with the 105 f4 lens, my trusty 50mm 1.8 ( will be purchasing a 50mm 1.2 when I can afford to) 85mm f1.8 and my Tamron 200mm F2.8 (which all work on the 550D equally as well ) I know I am now in sync with my needs .. I cannot thankyou enough you saved me time and money and I continually watch your videos when I need to refresh my memory on advice you have given .. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU

    Thank you for this review!
    I have this lens and have been thinking if i did right to bought it and after watching this video i can agree every bit of the information in it.
    I deeply regret of buying my Tamron 24-70mm G2 lens as it has failed me in quite a few occasions, and let's not forget that you are pretty much unable to use filters in front of it because the corners get black just after you but normal circular polarizer filter on.
    You can use polarizer, but only by itself, no protection or nd filters at the same time.
    But anyways, your lens review are the best! I just should have waited until you have made this review before buying the lens 😂

      (camera i use is Canon 5d mk4)
      Focusing at low light has sometimes given me that what is happening feeling, and i was little too optimistic about the lens's images quality when i bought it.
      But i am sure that most of the cases this lens will give you good photos.
      If the Canon ef 24-70mm L mk2 had a IS i would go for that for sure, even if it is pricey as he*l
      What i like about this lens is the image stabilizer, even if it doesn't can do miracles while you take videos.
      As i am not that rich that i could use Lee filters, i mostly use screw on filters that doesn't work so well with it because of the design of the lens.
      I like to have 24-70mm lens that i could use wide open and not to drop it down around f4 or f5.6.
      Because you sometimes need all the light you can get, as i usually don't use flash.
      And this lens haven't given me the 'feeling' in photos that would take me over the issues that i have with the lens.
      (Sigma 50mm Art can do that, even when the auto focus sucks)
      I am not pleased at this Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 g2 lens, but as i said, i am pretty sure that it will deliver good enough photos if you are not that picky about things like I am :).
      I hope this will help you at least a little. Have a great weekend!

      is there any other 24mm lens, that would not have black corners?
      Use ultrathin polarizer and no uv filter.
      Also, 82mm filters are pretty rare...

      +Darc 1027 Anything really wide with low distortion. The Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC either the original or G2 version should be pretty great for that. If you need to also do exteriors of taller buildings, maybe consider picking up a tilt shift lens. The Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D lens is a nice option, downsides are that it has no AF and no stabilization, also is less flexible than the Tamron zoom. Upsides are.... it is WIDE, and still has low distortion. 12mm is a lot wider than 15mm than most people realize.
